Can we all just stop to admire Caliborn here?
Like, he is possibly the most dangerous villain I have ever seen. This guy has the determination that surpasses those of heroes, never wavers, walks his path proudly taking on everything the universe sends at him and, above all else, due to his speech of Lord of Time (time being in his favor) and the fact the alpha timeline must always be followed, it isnt wrong to say he has protagonism and plot armor on his side.
Like, this guys puts most protagonists to shame if they were in his place and surpasses most villains the world ever knew. If he wasn't a funny jerk, most of his accomplishments would be examples of what must be done to win

Hiveswap is looking fantastic.
What determines a player's land? There seems to be a lot of theories on classpects but not a whole lot for lands. I feel like some of it has to do with fear, but it doesn't seem to be the case with all of them.
>>82328691
Well all space players have frogs (but knowing sburb, there will be exceptions). A lot of them have to do with aspect though. The betas all have something pretty directly linked with their aspect which is sort of disappointing. The trolls are the same.

wind and shade
light and rain
wind and zephyr
heat and clockwork
frost and frogs
maps and treasure
caves and silence
tents and mirth
eventually that fell away. Kind if like how when we first saw the planets they were all going to have something weird with them. John's covered in oil, Dave's stuck in amber, Jade's potentially irradiated, and Rose's toxic. He mentioned it in the book commentary and said he dropped it early on.

The Beta Kids' planets are inverted mirrors of their personalities:
John is generally a pretty positive guy, but his planet is all dark and dim.
Rose has likes her goth aesthetic but her planet is bright and shiny.
Dave plays it cool, but his land is mostly made up of boiling hot lava.
Jade is cheerful and emotional, but her land is covered in cold snow.
Troll lands are somewhat related to the aspects:
Quartz = Time (Quartz is used in clocks, e.g. watches)
Zephyr = Breath (Zephyr is a type of wind)
Fire (Brains?) = Doom (???)
Tea = Heart (???)
Pulse = Blood (Obvious)
Frogs = Space (Super Obvious x2 Combo)
Thought = Mind (x3 COMBO!!!)
Treasure = Light (Fortune)
Silence = Void (Makes sense)
Mirth = Rage (There might be a connection...)
Angels = Hope (Canon)
Dew = Life (Hm.. ?)
Alpha Kids' lands are associated with sepulchers (Crypts, Mounds, Pyramids, Tombs), symbolizing the void session, and noble gases (Helium, Xenon, Neon, Krypton), which cannot form bonds (perhaps symbolic of the alpha kids' relationships).
And then there's Caliborn's Earth, presumably Land of Colors and Mayhem, because of glowy pool ball eyes and time shenanigans. That's all I've got.

Clockwork and Fear from the HSGRP thingy
As the HEIR of TIME, you are surrounded by clock towers and an urban mechanical construct based in an industrial setting, smog, consorts steeped in a terribly inefficient bureaucracy, and a rather dreary planet poisoned with DREAD at every turn. The slightest misstep can lead to your doom, every pathway and travel must be transversed with care in order for one to get through safety. As a Heir of Time, one must learn to manage and understand the complicated bureaucratic time management and take control of this planets complicated infrastructure. Infernal problems such as the pollution and smog, hazardous accidents and industrial hazards will only subside once the player Masters this and fully realizes their planets full potential, turning the fear and Clockwork into a Gristmaking, productivity machine. The planet is designed to induce existential dread and Claustrophobia by it's nature.

I think overseer would be distinctly improved by some kind of 'gm' functionality.
One 'player' who's job it is to create the lands and items, assign classpects and put together the results of prototyping sprites all in realtime.
You could maybe tangle it up in the setting by having that player be a guardian or exile with their own quest to do on the side.

The gameplay mostly involves grinding, and that takes the form of clicking buttons over and over again, then waiting until your action counter refreshes.
Now, I don't mind this in, say, Fallen London, which has tailor-made descriptions or illustrations. But The Overseer Project does not, since it aims to be so vague it could apply to any session.
Want to alchemize stuff? OK, does you want special powers on your item? Then you better have a popular weapon and be prepared for a wiki walk, and then gathering a bunch of grist that might even not drop in your session. Are you alright with non-consumable, non-wearable items with no special effects? Alright, you can make your own.
Even with special powers, combat is kinda clunky and boring.
Inventory management is horrible, and the UI is generally awfum and unclear UI. (Of all the options available, you'll use half a dozen most, and you'll need to remember the menus ny heart).
Griefing is easy, fuckups are hard to fix.
No internal messaging system, meaning you need to play with friends and use a third party chat client.
So nah, don't waste your time on it. It's got potential, but it's not fun. And it probably won't be for a long while.
Honestly the way worlds balance seems kinda sucky. You could have a nice comfy world like land of pacifism and trees, or something completely hellish and retarded like land of seizures and screaming
>>82330441
>>82330555
>>82330505
The big problem is the inventory imo, if you get that in a good visual drag/drop window, images or not it would make it a hell of a lot easier for everyone. then more people would get into it and flesh out the alchemized items list, so you don't have to make one yourself everytime you have an idea.

It's like a weird reflection of who they are combined with a setting of what they need to accomplish to complete their quest.
Either way, I guess it's not really about "balance" as much as it is the game trying to bring back the best in that person or have them fail.
Sburb as a game kinda sucks for balance.

Yeah, I think trying to put a comprehensive framework to their assignment is a fools task, given how loosely other parts of sburb were outlined. I personally like to think they have some connection to the player inhabiting them, however loose. Some may be generated in a way to help the player get an understanding of their powers, such as the traversing of gears in Dave's world with the constant thread of a fall into lava. It fits with his Time aspect, given it's heavily weighted in the management of interconnected activities with the constant, looming threat of dead Daves through the slightest misstep. Then you get other lands like Nepeta's Land of Little Cubes and Tea which don't seem to have much of a link to her aspect or class without digging deep for some connection like >>82329419 suggested.

>>82332310

I kind of like that everything in homestuck has at least several terms
>>82332158
You'd need procedural world generation that equals, or perhaps even exceeds that of Dwarf Fortress. That's the big hurdle you've got to jump to make anything like a Sburb game.
For the core gameplay, anything simple and vaguely RPG could work. Terraria is an example, as is Minecraft. You could also do something like Zelda, or perhaps one of the GBA Dragonball Z games. You don't really need a lot of complexity there.
>>82332301
>its a "flat landscape with some of the things from the title on it" land
Oh, neat. I love Land stuff. To be honest half the reason I did RDV was just because I wanted to have fun imagining new Land variants. I should have asked for more art of it while I was writing it.

remidner that there is no completing the game, either it decides your timeline is allowed to, or isn't
makes me wonder if you could win a session in a doomed line and still survive if you can make it through the final door
I kinda like the idea of the final door being some sort of grand pass that erases all doom and gives you back a life if you're dead or whatever
>>82332889

Characters have speculated that they're meant to challenge you but if that was the case vriska would not be a Thief of Light
>>82332883
I love the gear sun
>>82332889
They're random. Some of them are meant to be challenging, but some of them are also well suited to their player. Literally speaking, you don't need a Time player, that's just a fail-safe. But since you can't start a legitimate session with one player, it doesn't mean much. However, as Sburb will frequently glitch and weird things happen in most sessions, it's possible to just not have either. In which case your best bet is to look for hints and either wait for more players (a la Alpha) or fuck off through the Ring looking for something useful to do (a la Beta/Trolls).
>>82332889
Remember that every player was born within the session. Among those babies is always a space player and time player.
>>82332995
Alright, here's the land creation method I have in mind for my fangame. I'm planning to use a limited, handcrafted amount of land titles because it lets you make levels meant to be played, instead of Perlin noise you stick a bunch of stuff on and test a hundred times for unwinnable scenarios.
Step 1: Make premade rooms. Nothing but featureless solid blocks, slopes, enemy/treasure spawn points and similar gameplay elements. Tailored them to be interesting.
Step 2: Create land types. Each land type has a tileset crafted specifically for it because this is a 2D game for fuck's sake, I'm not insane.
Some specific rooms can be restricted to one or more land types (e.g. a conveyor belt challenge is only for the Factory/Industrial theme).
Similarly, specific tile patterns can be associated with a particular room and theme. (A lone floating platform in a Forest theme might end up styled like a giant mushroom).
Step 3: Glue the premade rooms together, then auto-tile the result except when a specific tile pattern is needed. Switch tilesets occasionally, so the Factory rooms blend into the Forest rooms.
Step 4: Generate underlings, consorts, encounters and treasure in the rooms that include spawn points for them.
Sure, it's extremely limited, but it would still be fun to play through, IMO. Think Spelunky with more variety, or Vagante, but less cramped.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqyg_gwGMTg
(Here's a random vid of recent Vagante gameplay, mute it and skip around to see the level generation I'm talking about. Forest level especially.)
>>82333053
>>82333098
I always imagined spelunky is a great base for a SBURB game. Especially with workshop support.
>>82332949
Honestly, doomed timelines are kind of a strange thing. You could conceivably spend your entire life in a doomed timeline without realizing it. There doesn't seem to be anything inherently bad about them.

I guess if I did it, I'd have one part of the Land be the active focus, and the other just cosmetics that shell over or palette swap the first modifier.
So say, since it isn't being used for anything, Light and Rain. Rain seems like the important part; oceans, lakes, focus on the dead sea, rain clouds, play the rain, so on.
Light is the cosmetic shell. It just modifiers how the Rain part looks and adds color and style.
That way you only ever actually generate one half of the Lands in terms of levels to make based on the title, while the other half just throws on some modifiers.

Sounds like the forest/desert from Neverending Story (the novel). When the sun sets, all the grains of sand in the desert become seeds which grow into plants and trees. They grow continuously all night, becoming like skyscrapers and single flower blooms as large as a room. Then when the sun rises and the first rays hit, everything is immediately petrified and crumbles back into grains of multicoloured sands, and goes showering down to form new deserts and dunes in all the colours of the rainbow.

Caliborn is a CHILD.
So I had an idle thought about the Void aspect. It represents Sburb and the Furthest Ring, that is to say, you could read it as something representing existence rather than functions or mechanisms enabling life or personhood. So then a passive Void class like Rogue would be someone who defines the world around them (by redistributing it, perhaps) and an Active class like Thief would be more inclined to define the world through themselves, if that makes any sense? I'm not the most coherent person, and this shit gets pretty silly and hard to pin down.

Well, if we're talking about Land generation, let me weigh in.
What I would do, is start by creating a whole bunch of tiles. Different types of rock, crystals, grasses, trees and other plants, lava, fire, ice, water, oils or other strange liquids, glass or concrete or other building materials, strange stuff like flesh walls, whatever, everything you can think of. Give them all simple properties, noting that a lot of them will mostly be cosmetically different.
Then create a bunch of Words, like Light or Heat or whatever. For each word, give it a list of tiles, each with a different weight. The two Words combine their tile lists together, and the weights decide how prevalent each tile is in the Land.
Then you give each tile varying behaviors based on weight. For example, Water at a low weight would generate puddles here and there, but a higher weight would generate rivers, and a very high weight would lead to oceans.
Fiddle with that enough and you should be able to get a system that procedurally generates interesting, playable Lands. You would then need to create a subsystem that generates towns and dungeons, but those are comparatively easy once you've got the Land system working.

I can't believe that Spades Slick had to die for a subplot that shouldn't even exist.
>>82334733
Yes I also can't believe Hussie killed off a fan favorite character with hundreds and hundreds of pages of development for basically no reason and gave all his spoils to a completely different person who killed trillions
Wait no what am I saying this is Andrew Hussie of course I believe that
>>82334591
Vriska would be my guess. We're talking about the same troll who knocked out Jane before she could revive their Roxy and then everybody forgot that THERES ANOTHER RECOVERABLE ROXY.

What is the name of this unholy beast?
Also wow Hussie was so fucking proud of himself designing that shitty motif there's three separate meanings to it. (literally the sun in act1, the sign for Light, and yaldaboner's face)

None because none of homestuck's "characters" have minds of their own and all of them are the mindless game constructs of sburb, except for caluborn, the only real character, and he has no friends

I wouldn't blame him for wanting to annihilate the entirety of Paradox Space. Karkat's fate is laughably enviable next to his.

There's too much we don't know about Sburb to really tell. I mean, the trolls made it through, and they only had 1 god tier. But they also had crazy super powers just from being trolls. But they ALSO had some crazy powerful enemies to fight.
The kids had fairly weak enemies at first, then really strong ones near the end. But during Cascade we see John taking out hordes of powerful monsters, and he was just a kid with a strong weapon+god tier powers.
Hell, strong weapon+god tier powers was half of what we saw in Collide, which was presumably tougher than any Sburb endgame would usually be. SO I guess if you had a good group that managed some good alchemy and got a few god tiers, and didn't prototype anything game breaking, it would probably be pretty easy?
