I mean, it's not like it's an absolute, but yeah, a decent amount of Japanese people like American comics/cartoons, some being really really into them.
Not to speak as if I'm an expert, but, yeah, they have sub-communities and everything, either for specific shows or just western animation, in general.

It depends. Some are really into it, but for the most part, they are into it in the most casual way possible. Most folks just know the Marvel and DC movies and there's their frame of reference. Like, if there's a depiction of Batman, it's often "Bat-armor" like TDK or Arkham.
I would even say that the images and logos of the characters are more significant here than the actual books and characters themselves. I see t-shirts, logos and bags everywhere and if you ask em if they like it they'll say "yeah" but if you ask them if they've seen/read anything, there's a good chance they'll say "no."

So Dr. Manhattan perceives the nature of their universe, and convinces everyone of the urgency of keeping Haruhi amused. They stage an elaborate crime wave, and stop it themselves very publicly in order to do so. Then Haruhi decides she wants to fight crime too, so suddenly there is a new super hero with super powers just to mentor her. They genuinely get to the bottom of the crime wave, and end up having to fight the Watchmen. In the end, a terrified and beaten Dr. Manhattan starts spilling secrets to try to reason with Haruhi. Things she can't accept. The next morning, Watchmen was never a thing.

The great thing about the vague powers is it makes "who would win" and powerlevel discussions useless. Last time I checked, /jp/ hates touhou powerlevel threads because it's all speculation.

Plus in Gensokyo the rules of bullet hell battles are made so a weak character can stand a chance against a powerful one.

It feels like x-men or avenger academy done right in many ways. Like the world is way more believable because it feels adjusted to the idea of there being a lot of super human people. Of course there would be some kind of register and multiple schools, there is no way stuff could work without such a thing plus there is just so much money to be made

It also just does simple cliches so well that they feel entertaining again

>Do Japanese people like American comics/cartoons?

Well they fucking love anything Disney. Notably Stitch is way more popular there than here.

I remember reading articles about how superheroes, meanwhile, are notably far, far less popular in Japan. With various theories about why that might be.

Not that no one there loves superheroes but if you asked, "Does Japan like American Disney cartoons," probably most people there do, while if you ask, "Does Japan like American superhero comics," that's a tiny, tiny niche group.
>>
>>82319900
I like to picture Japanese Internet discussions as a sort of bizarro 4chan. Someone is discussing a Japanese version of an American show when someone bursts in to complain that the voices are atrocious and someone with REAL taste watches it in the original Glorious English, where the REAL good voice actors are. And a tiny, niche group posts smug super hero reaction images, which annoys the rest.

They used to consume a lot, since their production values were way lower. The whole Magical Girl genre was actually spawned by animated/comic knockoffs cashing in on the popularity of Bewitched.

Haruhi is a series that breaks with expectations. They subvert tropes. When you start thinking you are understanding what is going on it turns out that it is not exactly what you were thinking.
So it is just another school life anime? Not exactly. Is this just a normal universe? Not exactly. Now this is an alternate reality where the universe is normal? Not exactly.

Haruhi is a series that superficially looks like a generic school life anime and probably will look like that if you watch a random scene out of context but the main plot have nothing with a slice of life anime going more to philosophic sci-fi.

Howdy /co/, my name is Kenichi Smith.

I'm a 27 year old Japanese Toonaholic (Cartoon fan for you foreigners). I draw cartoons and comics on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior American games. (Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty)

I train with my 1911 every day, this superior weapon can shoot straight through steel because it kicks ass, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my gun license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak English fluently, both the Midwestern and the East Coast accents, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about American history and their Constitution, which I follow 100%

When I get my American visa, I am moving to New York to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Nickelodeon or a game designer!

I own several cowboy outfits, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to America, so I can fit in easier. I keep cool to my elders and seniors and speak English as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in America!

The common trope for time travelers from the future is that they know a lot of things that will happen and use it to their advantage or is always warning the protagonist of future problems. How many cartoons/movies/animes do you know where a time traveller is just a peon so either was never told about the events and the events that it does know is not allowed to tell? And this is just one example of many. I can only remember a board game with a similar concept and it is a game focussed only in time travel while in Haruhi it is just a piece of the puzzle.

But don't come to Nashville, we hate you god damn tourists you who don't realize you're the only idiots wearing this shit.
>>

Sometimes I see old men dressed like cowboys here in SoCal.
Not often, but I always tell my friends and go "Look, I've spotted a cowboy!"
They're fun to spot out.
>>
>>82374580
Not the same at all. The time traveller is the mc, he doesn't have contact with the agency that sent him there also not being tied to what he can or can't do like in Haruhi where the character can't even speak about certain stuff without having the words changed to "classified". Also it focus only on time travel.
>>
>>82374872
Probably they start expecting Dragonball but them realize that it is Yotsuba Looney Tunes.

Only 90s kids amirite?
>>

Oh, and make sure you get a t shirt that says, "I wasn't born here, but I got here as soon as I could!"
>>

Isn't 12 monkeys more like "is this guy crazy or is this the real deal" like K-pax

Nobuhiro Watsuki, the mangaka of Rurouni Kenshin, is a fan of X-men and other western comics.
>>
>>82375198
No, he isn't crazy.
>>
>>82364393
Anon, if you're going to talk about Imaishi being into weird western shit, why stop at Venture Bros?
>>
>>82375258
You have to remember that you get an unreliable narrator.
>>
>>82375342
No, the movie is not about him being crazy. It's a time travel story.

I mean, is this really a time machine in an underground complex or is this a CT scan in a hospital from the point of view of a crazy man?

I don't know if he outgrew it (it was over a decade ago) but the Trigun used to be into western toys.

He isn't?

He hear voices, lack social skills and ability to remember minute details.

Is in similar situation in both timelines; in the future he is trapped in an underground jail and in the present he is locked in a mental clinic

In the future scenes there are 5 scientists behind a table trying to decide if Cole is the proper man for the mission. In the present day there are also 5 scientists behind a table to figure out if Cole is sane or not.

Maybe he just twists reality and evidence for the opposite are created by his mind trying to convince himself.
>>
>>82375707
>I'm always just pretending to be a failing human that draws manga.
somehow reminds me of most webcomic artist and self-deprecation.
>>
>>82375757
If they were going for a movie where the theme is that Cole could be a time traveler or could be just insane, the movie would have been done differently. Another character also sees photographic evidence of him being a time traveler.

Another character assuring that it is all real is not final evidence.
>>
>>82375981
Why are you doing this? Do you do this with all movies? Are you bored and looking to argue about whatever?

12 Monkeys is about time travel. Fuck off.
>>
>>82375757
In 12 Monkeys they play with the audience a bit by making you wonder if he's crazy or not, but by the end they confirm that it is real, unlike K-Pax where they play both sides of that equally and give no definitive answer.

As a side note I fucking hated K-Pax for that because they wanted to toe that line so much but they ended up giving so much evidence to both sides that in the end neither explanation makes any fucking sense.
>>
>>82374612
Ehh, the whole manga got officially translated like a decade ago, so that's still pretty decent.
>>
>>82376046
What if the end was his final delusion?

What if you need to stop being a contrarian just because you're bored?

Cole keeps dreaming of a shootout at an airport, the movie ends with him trying to shoot someone and then seeing his younger self. Then the guy with the virus jets off, and that scene isn't from Cole's perspective. None of this has anything to do with theme of whether he's crazy or not.
>>
>>82376101
Then he'd somehow have to be a crazy guy with the power to see the future for him to know anything about the 12 Monkeys, the virus, etc.
>>
>>82338125
Lost it.
>>
>>82376159
Not being from his perspective doesn't means it isn't him who is imagining the events. I could imagine what is happening in my neighbor house even if I'm not there.

Are you perhaps one of those idiots who think that literally every possibility a human can imagine is a valid explanation or interpretation in a movie unless the movie has explicitly ruled it out completely?

Yeah, and Lord of the Rings was actually a dramatization of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. You can't prove me wrong.
>>
>>82377391
Unlike the 12 monkeys one it was never hinted your implication. But feel free to look for hints.
>>
>>82377466
It was never denied, so it's therefore a totally valid possibility and I'm just going to assume it's true because I find Occam's Razor literally triggering.

Ha! I remember when Moot embedded that song in the site, so it played in the background while you were browsing. Can't remember if it was all of 4chan or just /b/ though. June 2006 was it?

I still have the swf I extracted from the site back then. Heh.
>>
>>82377605
It was hinted multiple times in the 12 monkeys and even the protagonist is not certain about his status. In the Lord of the Rings you don't get mentions to skills, experience points, levels, speaking out of character, etc.

>>82377850

It's funny how the series' main gimmick is its inspiration from American superheroes but the plot structure is the most stereotypical shounen shit ever.
