He and Judy are working in a sister city of Zootopia for most of the film. They bust a crime ring and during the movie Nick realizes that a kid of someone he screwed over during his hustling days has fallen into that crowd and decides he wants to make things right. The kid knows what Nick did, and at the climatic last moment where Nick's trying to talk him down because the kids run off the crucial evidence needed to put the real criminals behind bars, but is so fucked in the head that he decides to jump off the building with the evidence because he thinks he's truly at a dead end and he can't trust Nick. Nick jumps after him and basically cushions his fall. Nick dies, kid lives but is still pretty fucked from the fall.

HTTYD2 is a weird one for me. I walked out of it the first time thinking it was ok but didn't live up to the original. But on a second viewing it felt so much better, and damn the writing is bold for an animated film.

I still really hate the other kid characters besides Hiccup/Astrid. They are the worst kind of comic relief. Having the silly baby dragons flying scene sandwiched between Stoic's Funeral and the final confrontation was a really bad idea, they should have just 'shooed out the clowns' until the end

I thought it was really great the first time I watched it, I watched it a few months after it came out just at home on my computer and cried twice.

It's not quite as overall a "perfect" package as HTTYD1 but it takes risk, and has way more emotional punch, it really hits you in the feel cortex in a way the first one couldn't and isn't afraid to show kids a little darkness.

If I were to nitpick, I'd probably complain about the same thing as you, or possibly that hiccup doesn't show any resentment toward his mum for disappearing.
