Is it just me or are exotic animals disproportionately represented?
Now sure, they make up most of the population but the /pol/ part of me can't help but see it as representing a vision of multiculturalism where most of the boring animals we're used to in our local area are supplanted by exotic ones from the less developed parts of the world.

they're represented there because they're exotic, like you said. Colourful, nice to look at, ring back to those nice Discovery / Animal Planet programmes.
I wouldn't enjoy a city entirely populated by sheep, mustangs or some other common fauna.
Also, I strongly disapprove of assigning any races to characters. For me, they are fennecks, foxes, bunnies and water fucking buffalos. It is more eye-opening to assign them per human qualitieis - a conman, a hardass with a heart of gold, a vengeful bureaucrat, a lazy slob of a person.
But of course most lack mental capacity to see anything but jews, turks, spics or what have you.
>>82204530
I was playing in a Broadway musical (I'm a musician) the other day called Ragtime, which features a load of Eastern European immigrants arriving in 1900's New York, and I really liked the idea of transplanting that to Zootopia. Sort of a history/fiction crossover. Mammals from more impoverished places arrive in Zootopia and have to come to terms with the prejudice brought against them.
>Elephants, hippos, rhinos are considered "prey" animals.
>>82206075
Seriously though there isn't a single hint of Nick showing attraction to anything, so y'know. It's all fair game.

Well, there are four characters that I could see as being sorta intended as being gay: the neighbors, Clawhauser and Bogo.
The neighbors because come on, hyphenated last name but different species?
Clawhauser because he's pretty much the gay cliché in every way but being obese, and Bogo pretty much just for the Gazelle scene.
I mean, being obsessed with a pop star is one of the typical gay clichés, and definitely helps build the "ambiguously gay" aspect of Clawhauser, so to have Bogo also be a fan of Gazelle? Not to mention Clawhauser being all excited to find out & Bogo's embarassement.
I don't know, I felt like there was somewhat of a gay joke there, in a strange roundabout way.

Pretty much. I'm just saying there's little/no evidence to Nick being into men, while he's definitely into women (there's that one short of him staring at Gazelles ass). I suppose it wouldn't be super ou of character for him to like men though, he does sorta strike me as the experimental type (plus he's pretty comftorable around other baked males at the nudist club).

Honestly, I didn't get any gay vibes out of Bogo enjoying Gazelle's music. What, now you have to be gay to have a guilty pleasure in musical taste? I don't think so.
Clawhauser more, because of his voice and his very camp way of acting. But I think reading Bogo as gay is trying to read too much into it.
But I mean hey, this is the 21st century. You don't need gay tropes to be gay; I'm gay and I don't have pink hair or a camp voice. So really any one of these characters could be gay, unless they say otherwise.
>>82206735

I'm pretty sure what we have so far on their Provincial/State codes are:
>Zootopia is a presumably the largest city in Mammalia, however, it is located within a much larger territory which it shares a name with. Like New York State and New York City. (Evidenced by the DMV receipt having "Zootopia" listed in the state and city section.)
>Tundra Town, Sahara Square, and the like are all seen as one entity of a city, but are actually individual boroughs. (Undeclared commerce across borough lines)
>There is some form of a county system in place, as Judy mentions a town named Podunk in Deerbrooke County.
>The Tri-Boroughs is likely a nickname for a group of 3 states, as the population is too big to be a single county. (The population of Bunnyburrow alone is 81,435,817, which is absolutely fucking nuts, That's two Californias.)
Anyone got anything else?
>>82206838
>autism
>being anywhere good as zootopia
>>82206838
>>82206838
It's not mlp. So don't waste time over those comparisons.
I know mlp has a broad age appeal - but Zootopia is much more grown-up in general, more mature in its pitching, infinitely more detailed in its animation.
I mean I'm speaking as an ex-brony who DID enjoy mlp. But Zootopia isn't a guilty pleasure, where it's silly childish stuff you kind of enjoy - it's a damn good movie that's damn good for everyone, while having characters who are simultaneously very compelling and also outrageously cute.
It's ... I don't know what to say, man, other than that it's not mlp. It's just aimed totally differently. And it's way better.
>>82206673
Yeah, they've got their share of ZTP reaction images.
>>82206928
I think he did that to lighten the mood as we've learned Nick is not very comfortable with emotional situations like these, so he did something silly to 1) stop Judy's crying 2) move away from awkwardly close emotional bonding moment, not unlike the gondola scene
at least that's my interpretation
>>82206798
Yeah, I know. That's just how I personally interpreted the scene when I first saw it and I do realize that it's a stretch - but you know, if I had to use a metaphor to imply a character might be gay without being able to outright say 'he likes men'?
I mean, the overall scene is about a very manly character being caught enjoying something stereotypically thought of as unmanly, being ashamed of it, and eventually not being so ashamed of it and seen being happy with it with that fellow dude-who-enjoys-said-unmanly-thing.
I don't feel it's that off-the-wall of an interpretation, is it? It's like the "I like rainbows" joke in Rocky's Modern World. It's not meant to mean that he's actually gay, but... the joke is there.
Not sure what point I'm even making anymore.

On top of that, the Bunnyburrow line is the only line that actually LEAVES Zootopia. This pic doesn't look like Zootopia at all, maybe it just looks a lot smaller from the sky. For most of the movie, it looked like it was a lot more sprawling, Idk.

It's not about looking at little things, it's about applying your brain to said things. A population of over 81 million humans would be an utterly ridiculous clusterfuck of unbelievable proportions, them being rabbits doesn't really change much. It's not a hard fact that needs to be scrutinized, this is not a fine novel where everything is potentially important, it's a children's film, with jokes in it. That was one of the jokes.

Neither would I, it just feels like "normal" animals are pretty uncommon. Maybe I'm just looking for cats and dogs subconsciously [yes, i know, they're domesticated and their existence is hard to justify in light of that], or maybe it's a size-thing.
>Also, I strongly disapprove of assigning any races to characters
Likewise. (The reference to "multiculturalism" was an evidentially cack-handed attempt at referencing the silly visions of a "multicultural" society that are monocutural, but change the dominant culture, not an attempt to directly say exotic animals = WHITE GENOCIDE!!!11), if Zootopia mapped directly to real world prejudice one way or the other it would fuck the film up.
>>82207643
Way to miss the fucking point. Two seconds reading the very first reply chain would have shown you that wasn't the thing I was getting at.
Let's just pretend it is that the number of small cats is lacking, just for example purposes. The question is "Why are there so few small cats yet so many Giraffes?", not "There should only be cats and dogs, non domesticated animals should only work in the lowest tier jobs and animals you can't find in Western Europe in our world should be portrayed only via news as the terrorist Islamic State in Zootopia."

>>82206150
I'm just going to say it.
I felt this scene was really bad. I know people go on about m..muh feels, but I really don't see it. I don't get why Judy was crying (it felt very forced) the drama between them was so poorly handled starting with the press scene and up to this. Why was Nick so pissed, why did he get so pissed, why did Judy say dumb shit at the press hearing and why didn't they just talk things out right there and clear things up. Judy obviously didn't hate preds nor did she hate Nick but they had to shoehorn in a way to split them apart.
Idk, it kinda brings the movie down for me a lot with these two scenes, I wish I could understand other people's views on it and maybe I could enjoy it, but it was really poor, imo
>>82208509
I get the feeling you're autistic and don't pick up on cues or something. Because, honestly it was a very natural scene.

>>82208509
I'm gonna catch hell for this.
For two reasons.
One: I love the movie with all my heart. I adore it, I think it's a cute story and that most of it is well written with a clear message. And once I give the second reason, people are going to question the truth in my words.
Two: I completely agree. The enmity that suddenly forms between the two of them feels very forced and phoned-in, and even more so the enmity between predator and prey throughout the city.
I was genuinely confused as to why to that got to Nick when NOT FUCKING MINUTES EARLIER... "never let them see that they get to you."
I. Provide. My. Point.
>>82207785

There's nothing to counter. You're wrong, and you very honestly may have something wrong with you. There's no argument to be had, just something you should get checked.
>>82208786
Nah, I'm right. That's why you can't argue against it, no one can justify the way they acted from the press scene after because it was poorly handled and they know it, but they just won't admit it
>>82208509
>why was Judy crying
Because she has been in emotional distress from isolating her friend, the only one she had in the city, as well as sparking tensions and essentially starting a race war. I wonder why a women would get worked up about that.
>why was Nick angry
Because Judy essentially called him a caveman, he hadn't slept in roughly two days, he was emotionally distressed at both betrayal and images of muzzles, so I wonder why.
>why was Judy being stupid
She hadn't slept in two days and she had never held a conference, so she just repeated what the scientist told her
>Judy didn't hate preds
She clearly does at that pint, it's fairly deepr rooted and subtle and she gets over it at some point, but it was certainly there

You very well may be autistic. And not even meme autism, literal "Socially Fucked" autism. I'm not even disagreeing with you, I personally, didn't cry during the scene, although I saw the sentimentality in it, and I thought it was very touching, just not emotionally moving. You also seem very convinced by your own arguments, you think everyone else is wrong, not even bothering to look at yourself. That's a biiiiig indicator of autism man, go get checked out, it's actually treatable/borderline curable, in minor cases.

Its theme is fucking God-tier, but only because it's so balanced. Unlike the other trash that gets put out, Zootopia comes out and says simply "Don't Stereotype." It doesn't say "Don't stereotype blacks.", "Don't Stereotype Women." or, "Don't stereotype whites." It also acknowledges that the victims of prejudice are often the biggest perpetuators of said prejudice. It's got the best motif of any movie to come out in the 21st century, easily.

Well you could argue that many species we consider to be "mundane" like sheep and cattle owe their populousness to human domestication and breeding, while many we consider "exotic" like tigers and elephants owe their low populations to human poaching and destruction of habitat. So it's not strange that they're under/overrepresented compared to real life.

I've watch this film a few times now, and I think I understand the tolerance for predators... but fuck the foxes in this movie. Each and every time one was on screen I began seething, flexing my hands repeatedly, and breathing in out down my chest somewhat more too loudly in effort to stray calm but I still got looks.
The foxes in this movie are abhorrent, I would drift in and out of conscientiousness in my seat imagining myself in this world, and being confronted by FOXES! So imagine you're a mammal and slave money to go to a restaurant and its nice and your seated and everything is good the waiter comes out and its A FOX!
I hope in the sequal Nick dies in his sleep (im not mean, nothing painfull) and is replaced by a raccoon or something, idk.

That's because it happened right after Nick had finally started opening up to someone after years of repressing his emotions. possibly the one thing i didn't like about this movie was gideon's scene where he scratched judy drawing blood.
it was treated like 'he's a predator, that's what they do' instead of an 'oh shit, a predator attacked a prey!".
>>82212615
is this the first disney movie to have actual blood in it???
iirc in the museum judy ended up bleeding and it wasn't her time of the month
>>82212615
That line of thinking is what gave Judy her prejudice towards predators and why she said what she said during that press conference. It's a perfect scene to lead up to what came.
>>82212615
Well, they're country hicks who are crazy speciest against foxes, that's probably exactly what they thought.
>>82212668
No. Remember the scene in Tangled where Flynn gets stabbed?
I'm sure there was something before that, too. But I can't quite place anything.
>>82206838
Apples to oranges. Also fuck off with your b8
>>82211807
No, they were trunks
>>82212668
I'm fairly certain many Disney movies have had blood in them.
>>82212706
I've never seen tangled.
I don't think I'm missing out, I don't really like the Princess ones.
Ok so i just saw the movie for the first time, and i cannot understand why so many people like Gideon. He's just a fox with a southern accent. I get he's nice now but seriously he has less than 2 minutes of screentime as an adult.
>>82212756
I just like Disney, mate.
Real good movie, ain't shit like Frozen. You should bother to try it if you ever feel like it.

i've been drawing for a bit and meaning to make some life improvements but during the semester i just can't manage to balance making those new habits and keeping up a 4.0 so this summer it's time. the cintiq is my reward at the end. i'm psyched.
always glad to hear people figure out their stuff even if it's just a good movie that triggers it.
sorry for the blogpostish

I just realized, there's a pretty good chance Judy killed that motherfucker. He goes flying spine-first into a huge lever, off of a train going around 70 MPH. RIP Woolter. (Or was that Jesse?)
