Will Zootopia go down as the most successful movie of 2016? If Civil War follows the same Path as BvS, and Finding Dory performs like the majority of Pixar sequels, it's a very real possibility, especially with golden week coming up.
>>
>>82168635
If it reaches 1 billion and if Finding Dory is banking on nostalgia instead of an actually well made movie, then yes
>>
>>82168635

Why wouldn't it? They're getting similar marketing treatment, the only difference is, on Civil War, there's no Hack Snyder to be panned by critics. But that would require the Marvel/DC Drones to actually read reviews, and I don't think that happens all that often.

Hack Snyder is probably the whole reason BvS did so poorly. Regardless of whether people see reviews, a lot of folks are always on the fence about seeing a big blockbuster like this. Then they look to reviews and word of mouth to determine if they go or not. Civil War is getting much better reviews than BvS, so that's gonna convince folks who otherwise wouldn't bother. Not everyone who goes to see a superhero film is a Marvel or DC drone.

Interest is at an all time high baby. It's not like these movies are coming out weeks apart. We get maybe 4-6 hours of marvel movies a year. /frz/ died out artificially, when the mods had enough. They saw it as a lost cause, because the threads devolved into nothing but fanfiction and circlejerk over irrelevant trash. Zootopia threads have always had their share of trash, but it's been that way since the start. On top of that, although they go overboard, the mods do keep a lid on retarded stuff that doesn't belong. so in exchange for the excessive hotpocketing and powertrippers, we get relatively clean threads for /co/. The NO GENERAL rule, for the most part, keeps them on topic, until 400+ posts. On top of that, without trying to sound like an elitist faggot, the community here is just better, and likely won't be getting shoved off to /trash/ anytime soon, regardless of what >>82168665

No, those were both actually the opposite of Zootopia's community. First off, not only are they vidya, which isolates a large audience, but they were both PC exclusive, and Indie, which made them obscure as fuck from the get-go. They didn't leak into the mainstream until they had gone big, and even then the average person doesn't know too much about them. Zootopia started off with a major corporation behind it, riding on the Disney name, was marketed to ALL demographics, and has an enormous normie following, along with us. Zootopia fandom is like an upside-down Triangle, with the majority of interest being at the top, appealing to the lowest common denominator, while still maintaining a presence on here and reddit. FNAF and UT have large followings of people on little corners of the internet, but will never truly hit it big.

They probably get the majority of their money selling to other vendors. My family doesn't subsist on selling sweet corn, we sell a certain grade of corn to Cargill who eventually sells it to Frito-Lay or what the Hell ever.

The Hopps are known to contribute to bakeries like Gideon and maybe other local restaurants as well as national vendors. They're probably keeping the stand open for locals and to keep their name circulating.

/co/ always overreacts when something gets popular. Recent examples are Zootopia, Frozen and SU. I guess I understand if some of you get PTSD.

Nothing will come close to what happened to MLP. While /tv/ does their meme magic to tore the fabric of reality, /co/ on the other hand is always at the eye of the storm, and these storms are no ordinary ones--they're freaks of nature. Nothing will top MLP yet, especially since it'll probably get a new reboot/version soon. Frozen was such a freak accident and won't happen anytime soon too.

SU, Zootopia, Homostuck, etc are ordinary stormy nights in comparison.

An interesting question to ask is how culture developed in Zootopia Earth from all these various species?

When did the change from "my next meal" to "my neighbor" occur?

How did it occur? What myths and history occurred during this time? Have there been societies that have had social dogma that preached a more regressive view and treated certain species as under evolved? How does a Shrew develop enough political clout to be the king of the Underworld?

Disney thought it was gonna be a B-movie, and were banking on Moana. Then Zootopia's rampant success caught them flat footed, and gave them a good kick in the chest. In a panic, realizing the following it had gathered, they started airing hastily made ads and trying to commission better merch, notice how all the merch is either fucking trash or it's sold out.
>>
>>82169882
That would be an interesting way to bring Jack Savage into Zootopia- he's a famous TV character, maybe kind of bumbling in both the movies and IRL (after all, it's not like anyone would take a badass bunny seriously, right?). So maybe the producers of the movie series want to do an actual 'serious' treatment of Jack Savage (think of it as moving from Roger Moore's 007 to Daniel Craig's), and they send their star to learn from the only badass bunny they do know of. We don't need a love triangle or whatever, just some tensions as a pampered actor interacts with our leads.

Only thing is, this kind of plotline's been done many times before, and I'm not sure how to make it truly unique.
>>
>>82169937
Not that anon, but no toy tie-up, not a lot of ads, no food tie-up, marketing team reaching out to legit furries, shit merch, low number of art books, etc. It's like they expected it to not work with normie families so they just went to the niche group hoping the movie will earn some dosh that way.

It only got cardboard stands and trailers playing, but that's about it. Compare it to Minions and KFP3 which were every where and both had at least toy tie-ups.

I think they only started marketing it hard in Japan and China after the sudden success of the movie. But even after its success, it still didn't get a lot marketing in the US and other countries that got it already. I still think they messed up by not riding on Easter.

Nah, both movies had a lot of rewrites and changes near the release. It's surprising how Zootopia still wrapped everything up neatly, where in Frozen you can pinpoint the exact moment the movie goes to shit. Also trolls.

Because of that, Zootopia is a bit higher than kinda good and Frozen.

Also, Zootopia never got blown out of proportion and never will be. It'll be that movie that was good but it won't have continuous discussion years after.

My thoughts, too. I think that a multi-species animal civilization would come about in a similar way to human civilization: as species evolved and developed greater intelligence, they would learn to move from hunter-gatherer societies towards settled agricultural societies. As society becomes more settled, it makes more sense for groups of people to cooperate and specialize their skills rather than constantly be at odds with each other. Basically the animals would have realized that they would have a better quality of life by working together rather than hunting each other.

Byron's original concept for Zootopia was about a secret agent rabbit called Jack Savage. They eventually decided that the whole spy aspect of the idea was not great, but they continued to develop the idea of an animal city.

Nah in all seriousness, anon, I think you just don't like this movie, and I have no problem with that.

But you don't have to delude yourself. Disney wasn't really banking on Zootopia at all. Shit marketing, shit merch, no toy tie-up, and just got Shakira (I thought she was retired until I heard she'll be singing for this movie). Remember, the marketing team even reached out to legit furry groups, possibly because they thought the movie won't do well with normies/families. In comparison, KFP3 had a mcdonald's toy tie-up, had food tie-ups, etc. Minions was fucking every where. WiR had the Japanese promo thing with AKB48, and even had the buzz that it will have Mario and Sonic.

But Zootopia? Fucking Shakira and animal puns, but that's about it. I even think Zootopia was just their tech showcase. Something they can show off their new lighting and fur technology.

Later this year, they have Moana, and I'm pretty sure they're banking on that instead. I'm just wondering why there's no promo yet. Maybe they're waiting until CW and Dory are done? Brown princess, musical, November release: it's like they're brewing the perfect storm.

Do you think if I bug Byron enough he'll make it canon in the sequel?
>>
>>82172106
I know you're joking, but this was part of the Disney press tour. He's used that imprint on other work in the past, including this fanart:

Those were made when they went to Japan to promote the movie. I don't think he'll be making one in India or somewhere if they're not going there. And I thought the yoga elephant in the movie was already a Hindi reference or something.

>But seriously, you think Bellwether would fit right in with UMNO?

Eh, not really. Malays and Chinese already have a bad enough rap already. Bellweather's a token minority whom Lionheart took on just to appeal to a small but vital swing vote, so she'd be the MIC candidate.

But the point of Bellwether's motivation is that she represents a 90% majority, most of whom are underappreciated and undervalued in favor of the 10%.
>>
>>82172332
She doesn't represent the prey, she really only represents rabbits alone. There were plenty of prey animals on the ZPD.
>>
>>82172332
It's a pet theory, but the number of Sheep she has in her scheme makes me think there are speciest or separatist elements in the Sheep community she was able to mobilize for the Night Howler conspiracy.

It means Lionheart was even willing to forward a running mate to placate a possibly speciest population.
>>
>>82172238
The creators of the movie took great pride in the amount of work they put to create this world, with all the details about how a society like this would work.
These questions are something they would in fact love to tackle.

Big prey animals that can fuck your shit up like elephants and rhinos are inevitably a minority within the overall prey grouping, because smaller animals like rabbits and mice and sheep breed faster and are thus far more populous.

That's based on real life. Sheep are literally the definition of herd mentality. Just like Animal Farm, all it takes is one person to implement an idea in their heads, and they'll take it and run withbit, no matter what the idea is.

For a tentpole blockbuster like BvS to perform SO poorly both critically and commercially even if it pulls a profit, the studio will see it as a failure. Underperformace is equal to a bomb to movie studios. WB is going to trudge ahead with it's cinematic universe for DC at this point, but I think if the JL movie bombs or underperforms they'll have to go back to the drawing board and just make a new set of Batman movies.

Lassetter only kicked the worst performers when I took over, then fired the "executive staff" that kept pitting them against one another. They were fighting tooth and nail, project-versus-project, for years while the execs sat back and beat off to "On The Range."

Byron has some great contributions in the concept phase, and his environmental design is great. I don't see him getting put to the curb any time soon.

It's also true this movie had so many issues despite direct involvement from a large Story Trust for nearly five years. Under the current system it's very difficult to blame one particular director for fucking up the works.

When will we know the Japanese box office earnings for the first weekend? I loved the fuck out of this movie and would really like to see it break one billion. Sucks that everyone I tell to go see it because of how good it is scoffs at the idea. Even if I tell them it's actually about prejudice and racism and such. >>
>>82174576
Why is it a bad thing that the movie took so long? I mean don't get me wrong, I get that a company wants results in a timely manner, but look at Zootopia. It took five years, some of that was technology development, some designing, story writing, revisions, etc. Instead of just shitting out a project it was made and crafted and ironed out until we got a really great fucking movie. I mean look at the box office earnings. 907 million because they took their time to make it feel right. Since the tech, city, and overall idea of what the city and world is now is complete, a sequel could be made in a much shorter time. Three years maybe?

Still I think the constant ironing out paid off big time. Put more effort and care into the characters and world you're crafting and it'll show. I want a sequel to feel like just as much care and love went into it as this one did. Brain storm, kick ideas off of coworkers, don't let it just be one guy calling all the shots with a bunch of yes men. That shit ruins so many things. Just look at the gaming industry. Yes men everywhere. Shit everywhere.

I'm not making any comment on the movie process. Everyone worked very hard to bring this to completion. So many people contributed to this, there's no scapegoat or particular hero of the day.

It worked out fantastically.

Zootopias creative process seems like it's a nice group project. Sure there are bosses, head guys, directors, producers, but from what little I saw in the making of things it looked like a lot of workers got together to kick ideas around. I wouldn't be surprised if interns or janitors gave honest criticism haha.

Whatever the case I want the sequel to be made the same way. Just as long as things aren't changed for stupid reasons. What I mean is in Zootopia there were hurtful things that happened. These were meant to happen. Nicks muzzle, stereotyping, prejudices. It all had to happen to make not only the city feel like an actual normal city, but also to help drive the story. If some social justice warrior had infected the creative process, it may have ruined the whole thing. Sometimes people need to be offended, or confronted with a subject that's uncomfortable. Things won't get better otherwise.

For that matter, why did the predators stay in zootopia? At some point, they would have said enough is enough and just rioted en mass or all fled the city. I don't think you have to worry about a nu-wave SJW getting in the mix. Disney can afford asking people what Apartheid was really like, or precisely how much segregation is encountered in a city full of disparate boroughs like New York or London, which the city was based off of.

They researched all this very carefully and come up with a movie that's refreshingly 'real' about what sort of prejudice people can encounter, and even a moment where a friend really trampled deeply felt feelings about Predator treatment.

No one came out smelling like a rose, but the city was beautiful. Stupid. Messy. Sometimes a little speciest. But fucking amazing compared to the monotone "COLLARS BAD" we may have been served in the original premise.
>>
>>82175436
It'd be pretty shitty but what if Zootopia in the Zistopia version WAS their best place to live? Maybe it was worse everywhere else. We perceive the shock collars as bad, but if there's a bunch of predators living in that city then maybe everywhere else is worse. That or every place in the world is like that which is in of itself also depressing.

I did like that even Judy still had prejudices. Even after the whole pred/prey living together in Zootopia thing she held so dearly. Even if it was from her parents, her surroundings, or just what she herself felt somewhere deep down. She wasn't perfect.

That's why I loved Bogos line when Judy felt bad about ruining everything. The city was broken and always will be, and they need good cops like her because of it. It didn't try to deny the city was imperfect, or paint it as an actual Utopia. They flat out said "No, this place can be shit, and we need good people and cops to help keep it together."

Could you imagine the muzzle scene being removed because it'd trigger someone? It's a fantastic scene and MEANT to make you upset. It's the whole point. The only thing that made the scene feel poor was young Nicks VA. I don't hate them but it just didn't sound like a younger Nick. I don't really care for that VA, either. Just don't think I've ever heard them in a role that I liked.

They'd be accountable if any of the predators went crazy and actually killed somebody. Like that polar bear who attacked a yak or something after Judy had went back home who was in critical condition. If they died I highly doubt the polar bear would be held responsible.

I wouldn't want to be the polar bear either if the animal he attacked died. To just go unconscious and then days or weeks later "wake up" and find out you killed someone after being drugged. Kinda heavy to think about.

Yeah, I know the feeling. They were great as Cubert on Futurama, but it's really one-note.

I enjoyed the scene for as long as it lasted. I heard a podcast (I think it was FurCast? Maybe KnotCast?) complaining that the "feels" scenes just didn't last long enough.

I thought they were just as rough as they needed to be, and just as long. I got a little tired of "what if feelings had feelings."

I hope there's a sequel that tells more about the world of Zootopia; really wanna see what it's like for the avians, reptiles, amphibians, etc of the planet, since none of them are shown minus the birds on the going-to-Zootopia scene. The plot could revolve around someone else trying to make it like "the good ol' days" or muh colonization and some such.
