Dirk doesn't really have any real combat experience. He grew up by himself far from any brothers to asskick/get asskicked by, and the game certainly didn't provide any worthwhile enemies for him to fight.

It's really interesting how good Hivebent looks in retrospect compared to Act 6. They have the same problems of introducing a new cast, shipping bloat, and pacing, but Hivebent was finished in less than a fifth of the time it took for Act 6 to limp to the finish line. It also helps that 5.2 and Cascade were a fantastic conclusion to the story so far.

I think the work the animator put into 7 makes it better than 6. Where 6 was a drawn-out mess that had fun ideas usually executed horribly, 7's animation was so visually impressive to me that I didn't care about the awful story.
