I was ready to cringe, but his art actually improved, especially the clarity of what used to look like scribbles with a bunch of photoshop filters applied. It's still substandard, but this issue is actually serviceable It only took several years of being paid for drawing Transformers.
The story is same old, same old. All feels like a protracted setup for something big, but it just doesn't work because the book has been all over the place ever since Autobots' return to earth and this doesn't work when your cast is bloated as fuck and you keep adding new characters for some reason.

Still waiting for Optimus to go the reverse IDW Megatron route.

Plus, with a name like Mindwipe, he'd make perfect sense as an ex-mnemosurgeon of the Institute. Especially since his usual armament is a gun which shoots a liquid which paralyses the cortical circuitry of other Cybertronians. Which fits with shit like the nudge gun.

Twisted? In Star Saber's case, sure, but I'd argue twisting "noble perfect heroic bold selfless noble samurai-sama" into the western equivalent, a knight, and then further into a knight templar, is more interesting. Star Saber's JP personality is just Optimus Prime but with a sword, and since Optimus Prime isn't dead in IDW... and if you say "IDW Optimus isn't noble, perfect, noble, heroic, selfless and NOBLE enough!", then there's Thunderclash to fit that archetype. Having three Autobot leaders fitting the legendary-unstoppable-warrior-of-justice archetype at once would be a bit redundant. It's the same reason Rodimus isn't allowed to be a competent leader like he was in G1 s3, but you don't read fans of him bitching about it as much.

As for "destroyed"? I don't think so either. IDW Star Saber's defining character trait isn't that he's simply a "crazy town banana pants" killer - if he were, a whole different set of people would be pissed off about him. He's a religious zealot, he genuinely thinks he's a warrior for justice, and so I could see him going through a Saul/Paul transformation, and then you have questions of forgiveness and redemption.

As for Hellbat and Deathsaurus... Hellbat was, aside from McCarthy's problems with distinct character dialogue, pretty close to his original portrayal, i.e. a Starscream. I know, I know, it's not the same without him and Leozak and DS triple-crossing each other, but he's stil an ambitious schemer. As for Deathsaurus himself, I REALLY don't understand why you'd complain about his characterization. I had a feeling that because Star Saber was portrayed as a more morally complex character, DS would draw on his manga portrayal, who DID genuinely care about his Destrons, and yep, they totally did
