Be honest, /co/. Has any animation you've seen done as much worldbuilding in as short a time as Zootopia did during the train scene?

Finally got around to seeing this today, and it was a lot better than I thought it would be.

It's kind of bizarre to say this, but I actually liked this about as much as (maybe even a little more than) Kung Fu Panda 3. I know the Disney movie usually wins Best Animated Feature by default, but I'd actually be okay with it this year. That is, if Finding Dory doesn't do better (which I somehow doubt).
>>
>>81957848
We're about to hit $860 Million gross, and the Japanese don't get it until Saturday. I doubt Finding Dory is going to be able to top that unless it pulls some Minions-tier bullshit.

do you reckon that whole sequence was nearly done with just nick and when the plot changed it was actually really easy to rejigger?

the movie did have stupid detail for something that apparently got put together at the last minute.
>>
>>81957848
>Kung Fu Panda 3
That movie sucked. No way it can be on the same tier with furrytopia.
>>
>>81958029
Nah, unlikely. Nick was always a Zootopia native. No reason for him to get the grand tour of the city when he had always been able to see the bright lights from his slum.
>>
>>81957819
He didn't say he is a furry because he likes Hopps. He said he is now a furry and incidentally likes Hopps.

Then again, depending on exactly how much you like Hopps, that may well make you a furry on it's own.

Its not worldbuilding, but the closest thing I can compare it to is the Test Drive sequence from HTTYD in terms of sheer spectacle and grandeur

The HTTYD sequence had way better music, I wish they had done orchestral music over the train sequence

I know it made sense given his backstory, but I really wish they didn't make Nick a police officer at the end.

Not saying he should be a con man for the rest of his life or anything, but now the sequel will need a new "sleezy member of the criminal world that has information Judy and Nick need" character. Eh, I guess it will probably be the weasel or bat.

Ignoring Shakira, I was really impressed to see how much the writers could establish in the 1:50~ of runtime it had.

Okay, this has been mentioned like 5 times now. Nothing is stopping me from talking about the movie, but I'm talking to a wall essentially. But we've seen the outside world. Bunnyburrow is over 200 miles outside Zootopia. We also heard of Podunk in Deerbrooke County. Zootopia is basically a kind of New York City and is huge enough to have its own flags and agencies and such, but the whole state/country/world isn't Zootopia.
>>
>>81959150
One thing I will add. I don't see judy and Nick getting together.
>>
>>81958920
I dunno.

As an elseworld with no established connection to our own besides not!NYC megacity, they could push the whole "social issues" concept in some creative directions.

Like-----this world clearly has a history, presumably a time when predators and prey were in perpetual conflict, with the formers trying to hunt and eat the latter. Maybe the next movie could address a sudden resurgence in that practice, since in the setting it's basically cannibalism, and the general question of what it means to be civilized.

Or what lead to the establishment of this semi-peaceful coexistence between so many species in the planet? Is specism a bigger issue elsewhere? Will the stigmas against predators carry over into the next movie, despite the original conspirator being arrested? Stuff like that would be interesting to focus on..

By Cressida Cowell. In the books, everybody had a dragon, like it was a coming-of-age ritual for a kid to venture into the untamed Dragon caves and come out with one. Hiccup was the chief's son and was entitled to a fucking awesome dragon but being the wimp he was he just grabbed something and ran, and it turned out to be a shitty little asshole dragon with no teeth, hence the name. Instead of everybody hating dragons like in the movie, they just saw them as tools or pets, and the special thing about Hiccup was that he was the only one that bothered to learn and speak their language.
>>
>>81958920
I want more backstory on nick. We literally know nothing about him besides his dream of joining boy scouts, and concept from proto-zootopia that most likely wont be canon.
>>
>>81959290
It's not really a "huge enough" thing. I thought all cities had their own flags; you just don't see those flags outside of city hall.

Have you looked at the HTTYD artbook where they have some art from when the movie was gonna follow closely to the books? Soooooooo comfy
>>
>>81959288
Nah, I'm from California. They just happened to be in the bookstore and I was crazy into dragons at the time. I read them since the second book, but stopped getting them long before the movie was a thing.
>>
>>81959345
Well, until directly contradicted by a sequel, it was just Nick and his mom. No dad, no siblings.

Read the wiki article on the production, even Chris Sanders thought the concept was too juvenile for a movie
>>

We can sorta guess that he never really had any friends because he closed off his emotions to people so that they couldn't hurt him
Finnick could've been his friend but Rich just had to ruin it on twitter
>>

Well yeah I agree with that, but that doesn't mean they aren't comfy books.

>>
>>81959353
Shit, that sounds awesome. I'll dig around. God, I loved those books back then.

>>81959368
I'm sure the series would have been awful if directly adapted to screen, but in some ways to me they went too far. They removed almost all complex character traits from Toothless (who started as a whiny little shit who very incredibly slowly started to understand and listen to his master) and by extension took a lot of character from the world by taking away the dragons' speech ability.

Seems I'll have to rewatch it though, back when httyd came out I was in a total "animated things are only for babies" mentality.

The writers have never said they are not getting together, they also didn't say they are. Unless Rich posted a new tweet lately that confirms it?

Last I heard they openly said that they are "deciding where it should go" No one knows where Nick and Judy will go from here, they're friends at the moment is the only thing confirmed, which kinda sucks but it's what it is

One mayor and one assistant mayor.

Why Bellwether didn't just run for mayor herself and get elected on the sheep vote, instead of giving it to Lionheart by being on his ticket? Assuming that animals tend to vote their own species and they use the usual first past the post voting system, a lion would normally be at a massive disadvantage against a sheep in a race.

It's funny. When Disney couples get together, everyone go "Ugh, so cliché".

This one time they avoid ALL openly romantic stuff that happens between a boy and a girl and instead focus on chemistry between protagonists and their character development, which means what could happen next is left to individual iterpretation (this includes the "you know you love me" line)... And EVERYONE wants the main characters to get together.

Yeah, and guess why, because said boy and girl worked SO well in the film together and built such a wonderful chemistry that we WANT them to advance to the next step now. It wasn't forced, it didn't feel pushed, the romance step wasn't there, but now that it's shown they would be so wonderful together, people want them together. In the Japanese dub they erase so much of the racism subtext. It's basically gone. Judy and Nick have their fight because in the press conference she takes all the credit and doesn't mention that Nick helps her; the entire bit about her saying predators might be reverting to "their savage nature" is cut out.

We hate people based on their behavior regardless of their ethnicity.

Over here we're a similar mix. Spanish, Chinese, Malay-stock islander. Very very racist country. We hate niggers, make fun of Indians (they'll buy your baby), think Japs are weird, treat Chinks how the West treats Jews (money-grubbing), make fun of Koreans (they're invading out country) and deify anyone who looks vaguely European/Caucasian.

We still make bomb jokes whenever we see arabs/anyone in muslim garb. We're still civilized people after all.

physically showing the world to you =/= "worldbuilding"
More of this was accomplished during the opening play and the police academy scene.

Unrelated note, I finally got around to seeing this and I honestly have to say I was underwhelmed. For a movie that seems to get endless praise for its worldbuilding, it really is very poorly explored. We get the vague notion that at some point in the past, things were different, and now a ton of animals live together in harmony in a city with different climates to support their needs. I feel like a 12-year-old could have come up with that, and considering they never really went any deeper than the surface of the concept, I wasn't impressed.

It might be the grumpy cynic in me, or just the fact that I'm getting older, but the movie just felt like a kid's movie, which is something I thought we were getting away from with animated features. Things moved slowly and were painfully telegraphed so that the audience wouldn't be left behind. Compare this to something like, say, the Lego movie which moves along at a better pace, offers more compelling ideas, and integrates all of its character moments into the plot a lot more seamlessly.

It doesn't quite hit the level of magic that HTTYD hits at its peak, but at the same time it's a very good movie. It's just more focused on the mystery and the characters and the humour, while HTTYD went prety wild on the "whoa" factor.
>>
>>81961893
Not that person, but though every country has an element of racism in its society, America has racism written into its very history and as a result the topic is a major part of its culture.

And though other cultures and countries almost certainly has racism, it may not be the most pressing issue the its people face. It may be discrimination of religion, gender, class, etc.

The people who made this movie almost certainly had race in mind, but I really like the fact the story didn't have to be about race in particular, but rather discrimination in general.

The thing is Japan is so much more homogenous than for example NYC that racial differences aren't really something the average Japanese person deals with every day, people of other ethnicities are a distant nothing to be laughed at on talk shows or romanticized in fiction. Or demonized, in the case of Chinese and Koreans, but most of all most Japanese don't have to live with them.

Why do you say 'drop like hot rock'? Cold rock can drop as fast as hot rock can. Temperatures (at least in normal-sized physics) does not effect subject's velocity. If you say hot temperature increases one's voulme and air resistance slows them more, you would be technically right, but its difference would be so small that you can ignore.

They only showed what they had to. The world is very complex and the story flowed organically through it; things like the diets of predators and the logic behind the wall between desert and arctic biomes and even melting ice making the rain of the Rainforest District are never explained in the film, just like we'd hardly ever talk about what purpose a bus terminal serves or why Indian food tastes the way it does. The concept is simple at it's core and but it's more well thought out than it had to be and tells a story where the source of conflict isn't just internal for the characters, it's real in all of us.

How did things seem painfully telegraphed to you?

the sole purpose of this movie is to addressed the social issue in the real world, like diversity and prejudice but in the form of cute animal movie. Worldbuilding itself just played as the background role. But knowing how much effort they took when creating this world was fucking amazing, I want to see more of it.

Inside Out was better when handling the worldbuilding

>but now the sequel will need a new "sleezy member of the criminal world that has information Judy and Nick need" character.
What's wrong with Nick?

It's not like Nick and Judy will arrest every single criminal they see.

A cop is only as good as their informants, they will surely let things slide in exchange for continued information.

I mean, look at the fact that Judy and Nick were at the wedding. She's not going to party at the crime boss' house for tea and drinks every day but she will probably hit him up for info from time to time. Like the purse thief, Judy could probably just demand information or threaten to lock animals up too anyway depending on the criminal. Nick still has his contacts and I'm sure he'll know how to stay in contact with the criminal underworld too. It's not really a close and shut deal.

Like with Flash at the end, they're not going to drag him into lockup, they'll probably give him a warning or write him a ticket and if he begs not to, they'll probably work something out as long as he stops stomping on the pedal like a maniac.

Eh, the concept of Zootropolis being split into a variety of different artificial areas was established earlier. It's not really world-building if you're showing something we already know about.

I suppose the train sequence did show us how they maintain the different zones (heat pump walls, sprinklers, etc) but that was more of a token effort than anything. The technologies they use aren't really practical, they're just a sort of slight of hand to obscure how impossible the whole thing is.

Yeah, I know the feeling. I am in the same boat with a project of mine.

However....

Maybe it is because I am old (mid 30's), but over time I have learned not to worry about this.

Broad strokes, and even details end up similar between things all the time.

Literally just keep going with your project. Both art and entertainment are evolutionary industries wherein everything builds off of everything that came before it.

To be quite honest, that is how storytelling itself has been since the dawn of time.

It would be like saying "Zootopia ripped off of Lackadaisy, and Poppy O'Possum, and Zoophobia (among many others)" just because it has some visual stylistic elements, world building elements, and a title that are similar to those.

So never fear. The "similarities game" is a two way street, and History is kind to projects and people who stick with it and follow though.

It's theoretically possible in a technological wonderland that has infinite energy and resources, but Zootropolis isn't exactly Star Trek. If they have the energy to power heat pumps large enough to create a miniature Arctic right next to a miniature Sahara, they wouldn't need carrot farms.

There's a reason Qatar produces the most carbon dioxide per person, and countries like Australia and the US aren't far behind. Cooling and water processing takes loads and load of energy.

The film was rendered at 2K resolution, so the Blu-Ray will be almost as detailed as the theatrical version. If they decide to re-render it at 4K and release it as a 4K Blu-Ray, then it will be even better than the theatrical run, which will be confusing and awesome.

My local AMC has discount tickets on Tuesday.

I called to find out theatre times for Zootopia on a Tuesday. Waited 20 minutes for a bus, then 30 minutes on the bus, and then got to the theatre 15 minutes before the time they gave me.

They swapped it out for some bullshit early preview for some movie I don't remember.

Made me so fucking mad.

The manager was there to try and talk me down when I got mad so I just threw my membership card at them and walked out.

Went to a Red Robin for dinner, spent an hour getting home, then spent the rest of the night sick with food poisoning.

It's small on the scale of the atmosphere.

They would need to have at least one area totally enclosed within an insulated greenhouse type thing. With that wall as it in the film the hot area would immediately lose its heat to the atmosphere, the cold area would almost immediately lose its heat to the atmosphere and the jungle area would probably lose its moisture to the atmosphere.

Aw that sucks. I live in a suburbia, so there are a dozen theaters within a 10 mile radius. Heck, I was thinking of going solo to a 3D showing sometime this week.

I've seen the film in 2D three times now, and there are plenty of scenes where the characters look 'flat' although they are 3D models. I want to see this world with simulated depth.

Any other stoners chilling around? I smoked myself a joint before the movie for 2 of my viewings. Zootopia is a great film for the ganja, promotes peace and unity, looks absolutely stunning, and it's got Tommy Chong. A great high movie.

What is Zootopia's equivalent to our animal testing?

I mean they kind of need some sort of disposable nonsapient easy to breed mammal to test drugs and shit on before graduating to sapient mammals if they want to get development of any kind done.

For example, they have a space program. The Soviet Union sent up Laika well before they sent up Gagarin. Who did Soviet Zootopia send?

Sending bugs into space just won't give you the kind of data you need to send up a mammal.
