Because cartoons rarely have interesting/likeable male characters, and all that female characters need to do to be interesting to a male audience is be attractive. When you have female characters that are both attractive and genuinely interesting, you get explosive fandoms like SU and GF.

Honestly, the only male character I've really cared about in the last several years is Grunkle Stan.
