What's wrong with torturing bad guys?

It's counter-production. People under physical, mentor or psychological duress will just tell you what you want to hear to make the pain stop.

You'd be hard-pressed to get actually useful information out of torture, especially street-level torture.

While you might be able to get actionable intelligence using torture (what is euphemistically called "enhanced interrogation techniques" in certain government quarters), its veracity and reliability will be questionable. Torture someone bad enough and they'll admit to doing anything.

The best intelligence is that which is volunteered by the subject, either because he thinks doing so will benefit him or because he's actually crossed over to the other side (which is why "turning" the enemy and winning "hearts and minds" is so important).

pretty much, unless you have some specific piece of information that allows you to discard the fake answers, or some kind of mostly reliable lie detector like Daredevil you never can trust what they tell you.

what if you had the bad guy captured and threatened to hurt him more if he gave false information? I'm on the fence about whether torture works or not, but on a gut level it just seems wrong.

Because we're idiots who refuse to accept it doesn't work. That or we're lying to ourselves and are doing it because hurting the bad people makes us feel better, not because it's actually getting us any information of use.

Hell, for most of human history torture was used to force people to confess to pre-written confessions. IT was so you could blame someone and put the matter to rest. You just hurt someone (sometimes the most likely suspect, sometimes not) until they admitted to what you wanted them to, then you punished them publically so people would accept that the issue was closed.
