Yes, the pendulum must swing though. We have to put up with ugly artstyles that are cheap and easy to animate for a few more years and then a new batch of animators will come along with some sort of detailed action toon and everyone will go crazy for it.

we're in an era where EVERYTHING is too expensive. nobody wants to work, everyone wants everything for free. in the first place animation was always too expensive, so they had to have just shitty wages and ludicrous hours to make it work, outside of shitty flash paper cutout or hanna barbera shit
but now we've had a ton of streamlining to the process of quality animation (to think people used to have to actually lay a cel down on a photography board, in order, making sure there's no dust, making sure nothing moves even slightly.. now you just add the frame into the timeline and there it is. also nobody has to hand paint anything, it's all digital) yet the quality goes down and the affordability remains astronomically impossible without toyline support
meanwhile toys have no particular advantages over the past aside from CAD, plastic costs are still high, and anyone with skill gets driven out of the shitty industry because they're starving on what it pays... so toyline support can't happen either.
we're pretty much fucked. we cant even afford, collectively, to keep ourselves alive.. because insurance companies have decided every dollar spent on health means 10 dollars paid to them, either by the patient or the doctor in the form of malpractice insurance.

Legend of Korra was great, but it seems like it just didn't have the ratings to justify such an expensive project. Not to mention the shit show with the season 3 leaks and becoming online only, then having the next season air a month later. Seems like bad business.

Changing the air schedule in Season 2 and air day(from 11am Saturdays to 7/8/8:30 Fridays), cutting down on advertising as the series went on(Season 3 got rushed out because of the leaks and therefore didn't even get advertised, it had its air date announced 1week before in the first trailer) contributed to massive drops in viewership.

There are probably a few reasons but I think in ATLA and LOK's cases they weren't conventionally marketable, or at least Nick didn't think they were. We're just now starting to get a decent merchandise line because Nick finally woke up and realized that people will buy Avatar shit that isn't lunchboxes, dog bowls or shot glasses.

I'd actually disagree here. Avatar has some of the funniest jokes I've seen in an animated production. If anything, it should be more highly regarded for its comedy (which Nickelodeon are good at) than for its plot.
