No. It was best to read it in 2011-2013. Reading it without someone to discuss it with would be boring. Pesterchum, roleplaying blogs, and the dumb animations on youtube was part of the fun. The worst thing really is that the fucking finale of homestuck was just outsourced fan art. It had none of the impact of Problem Sleuth's ending just because of that. Hussie might as well have had nothing to do with it. It's like those guest pages your webcomic puts up during hiatuses, that make you go "well, that's not very good, but it's a nice homage I guess" and you're always relieved when the actual artist steps in again, but it was the FUCKING FINALE.

Pretty much right at the beginning. Hussie established very early on that the beta kid's dynamic was far different from the "snarky cooperation" that we knew and love from the alphas.

For whatever reason, he seemed to think that we wanted to see drama from characters who more or less hadn't been established at all. Like, the reason people tolerated/enjoyed a lot of the drama in Act 5 was because we had grown to love these characters, while in Act 6 the drama WAS the characters, they were inseparable, every character development was just another deliberate route to more drama.

OK so here's what happened.

Homestuck is a sprawling run-away narrative. A tangled webs of callbacks and convolutions, weird time travel shit, and bootstrap paradoxes. It was never the kind of thing that was going to have all of its threads resolved and never was going to be an ending that satisfied the explosive exposition. In number of unstructured words whose count rivals entire popular authors' collective works, someone's always going to find a new foreshadowing moment that never came to fruition or a plot whole that has to be hand waved away.

But that wasn't the problem.

The problem is that 2 years into the project, Hussie said "this is kind of blowing out of control and I really want to start moving towards an ending." But instead things got more out of control. Then 3 years in, "OK I really don't want to be doing this for much longer so I'm going to story board an ending and try to work to it." But things got more out of control. So 3.5 years into the project Hussie said "OK I'm going to stop all updates so I can plan out all the steps to the end and prepare it all so I can release it in pretty quick succession. Oh and I'm also going to start a kickstarter for a Homestuck themed base that HOLY FUCK 2.5 MILLION DOLLARS." So about six months pass, everything all hush hush. Fans are expecting Hussie to be hard at work tying up Homestuck but in reality he's getting his money stolen by the people he hired to make the game, giving the elaborate ending animation that was destined to take 3.5 years to finish the go-ahead, and other shit.

The rest kind of writes itself and I really don't remember all that happened in those 3.5 years that were mostly pauses and stuff that didn't matter because the ending was already set in stone. But in those 3.5 years, the Homestuck fandom deflated and when the ending finally came, those who stayed were disappointed in how disconnected the ending felt from everything that had happened up until it.

It would be a massive middle finger on the scale of the Statue of Liberty erected on your front lawn (almost sounds like a B2 Dave stunt) but it would signal the return of old Hussie in the most old Hussie way possible.

This.... the newspost makes it sound like he really put his all into it, he's thanking everybody from the bottom of his heart, talking about what a relief it is to finally finish such a monumental project... The sincerity... the gratitude... no sarcasm, superiority or gloating... it makes me lose hope. Because it means this really is all he had to offer. A buildup, then immediate cut to a vapid happy ever after, with no actual climax. It's not that he's an egotistical ass, or that he had this 7 year freight train suckerpunch planned all along; this is just all there ever was. This was it. Hiding behind the curtain was... nothing.
