I loved DoFP but if anything, the stakes were as goofy as in AoU. I mean that ending was bizarre as hell. I get what Magneto was trying to do but the way he did it was so bizarre and contrived.

The stakes don't literally have to be high for it to work. DofP and AoU showed that when facing extinction, there's still a good chance for the plot to appear goofy. Civil War is dealing with a much more specific problem and so far from the look of the trailers, the stakes already feel like they're higher.

I personally don't have a problem with high stakes as long as they're being pulled off well. While DoFP is one of my favourite capefilms, nothing I've seen of Apocalypse is convincing me that this isn't going to be the usual X-men cheeseball cranked up a little too far.

If anything the new X-men films are sort of like the reverse BvS. They have arguably the least valuable characters (after FF), the most limited marketing, poor costume design and a weak supporting cast, but the main cast and director are able to make up for it.

I really hope Iron Fist surprises people. I honestly think after all this aggro it will get lauded for having the best Asian representation in the MCU. (Fuck maybe even Hollywood). The first season may be rocky, but if they introduce The Immortal Weapons in prominent roles, that will change.
