Talk about when you were first introduced to AS, favorite memories you have of AS, favorite shows, thoughts on current AS, all that jazz....

>>
>>81800773
I used to tape as in its early days.. lost them tho. All those old commercials... i remember them playing some gorillaz videos and a claymation thing called more i think?
>>
>>81800773
man that brings me back
>>
>>81800773
I watched the first AS, caught most of the SGCTC that preceded it. AS was amazing until it became the FOX rerun dumping ground. my favorites were stuff like Sealab, Birdman, Brak. later stuff like Moral Orel and Squidbillies was ok, but when they got into tim & eric and live action shit, that was the beginning of the end coupled with endless FG and other crap. not popular here, but AS Action was also a favorite of mine with stuff like Bebop, Gundam, Kikaider, Inuyasha, and Lupin.
>>
>>81801209
Cowboy bebop is what drew me to adult swim at first but then i really got into thier other stuff more. Home movies mostly.
>>

>>
I have to say, as much as I loved AS through out the 2000s, there really was something special about it before stuff like Futurama and Family Guy joined the block (the "two Fs" as we called them) and pretty much started dominating in the ratings.

Hell, Home Movies in Seasons 1-3 was one of Adult Swim's highest rating shows, but by the time Season 4 came around, Home Movies ratings paled in comparison to the dominant FOX reruns and frankly by that point AS had gained a bit of a new audience from the "two Fs" that always seemed to tune out when stuff like Home Movies and Space Ghost or The Brak Show was on. That's partially why all those shows got the axe in '04 (well that, and Lazzo hated Home Movies and had wanted their budget to be re-distributed to the then-upcoming Squidbillies and Tom Goes to the Mayor).
>>
>>81800975
How'd you lose them
>>
I hated Adult Swim when it first started because I was convinced it was like Nick at Night, not cartoons and just shit.
>>
I'm pretty sure I tuned into the very first appearance of adult swim. Back when Home Movies and Aqua Teen Hunger Force were there best shows
>>
I can remember my older brother yelling at me for watching Family Guy because it wasn't a kids show.
My first episode of Bebop that I saw was Toys in the Attic one late night.
>>
>>81801720
Lots of moves, crazy early 20s.. really regret losing them. It was 6 or 7 tapes of just straight 2003 era adult swim.

>remember 10 years ago when any show that wasn't Family Guy got shit on by people who only tuned into [as] for the FOX shows
>now the schedule is 90% FOX reruns

we could have prevented this

I used to stay up late all the time as a kid for all the weird late night goodies on different television networks. Space Ghost weirded me out. I loved it.
My parents were also partiers and one of them an alcoholic so they often left me and my little sister home alone all day and night. We'd stay up late, make a blanket fort around the TV, make snacks, and then watch Cowboy Bebop and Home Movies together. I used to feel very satisfied after seeing this on the screen every night. It always gave me something positive to look forward to.
>>
I remember that distorted robot voice that read out loud the "viewer discretion is advised" message
>>
>>81802134
I love the idea of the marathon streams, but all they ever seem to show is like Robot Chicken, The Boondocks, Metalocalypse, Mr. Pickles, Rick and Morty, Loiter Squad, Tim and Eric, and shitty live action stuff.

They used to have schedule where you could at least see if they were playing anything good/different from usual.
>>
>>81801209
I caught it the very first night too. Watched it regularly until the rerun rejects from other networks took over the joint.

at least Home Movies was fun for the first few seasons.
>>
Honestly, I haven't watched AS in over 5 years now, but they were still doing some cool stuff in the late 2000s iirc even if ASA was kind of shitty. There was a lot of live action stuff being produced that was alright, but I remember you had the Brit block and KoTH and The PJs had been added in the early hours to accompany Family Guy and American Dad. Plus, stuff like Harvey Birdman, Stroker and Hoop, Mission Hill, Sealab, Brak, The Boondocks, and Xavier were all still a regular part of the lineup along with the usual suspects like Robot Chicken and Aqua Teen.

I also remember getting up early before school to watch Home Movies and Inuyasha, too.

Is it still as good nowadays?

Is it good? Meh... king of the hill and bobs burgers are always good, and they have venture bros... once every 3 years.... i lost interest in rick and morty and honestly gave thier live action stuff a try but i just cant get into them.. the only good live action thing they had was the mighty boosh, which they edited alot out of. Mike tyson mysteries is suprising good. I almost forgot about that.
>>
>>81800773
The first airings before the old people gimmicks. If I remember right it was just a disclaimer about content for mature/adult audiences and then shows. We are talking a long time ago.

I used to watch late night Cartoon Network for the Space Ghost c2c prior to Adult Swim. I would stay up late and my oldest sister would come up from her Cracker Barrel job and bring me a snack. It was bitchen.

I was really young when i started watching Adult Swin.

It had a bunch of shows that i barely understood the humor but somehow couldnt stop watching. Now i've been re-watching many of those shows again and they are even funnier that i remebered now that i get the jokes and references.

Feels good.

Too bad they banned the show in brazil. It came back some years ago but it doesnt get new shows or episodes apperently, besides i get everything online so who cares.

Favorite shows are Venture Bros, Black Dynamite, Aqua Teen and Robot Chicken.

They banned adult swim or just a particular show?
>>
So 2001? I think that was 7th grade.

I came for the Space Ghost and stayed for the original content.

When they added Futurama I loved that, same with King of the Hill. There was some point in High School I'd watch this programming block till I die. It's 2016 and I don't even have cable and haven't really sat down to watch the block since 2011 maybe.
>>
>>81803195
>Inuyasha
I feel like that was THE stereotypical Adult Swim anime. Thought it was just weird and there was swearing so I never watched it.

They banned the entire block.
In fact some of the things i loved when i was a kid are banned ehre, like adult swin and Bully from Rockstar
>>

Had sleepovers with some friends in middle school and that's when I saw it for the first time. Space Ghost. Some Brak Show. Yu Yu Hakusho stands out a lot.

After that we'd try to get scrambled porn on the TV while my friends parents were sleeping.
>>
>>81800773
These commercials are my earliest memories of Adult Swim, my earliest Adult Swim TV show memory was probably The Brak Show. I remember my mom not letting me watch it because it was called ADULT Swim, but I thought that was only a name and it was like Nick at Nite or something.
>>

>I remember my mom not letting me watch it because it was called ADULT Swim
The struggle is real. Had to deal with the same shit. We only had one TV in the house though, so I couldn't even sneak watching it for a long time.
>>
>>81803376
I've spent years without knowing the se shows still aired or that adukt swin even had new shows.

When i find out that aqua teen had around 9 to 10 season(now 11) i went nuts.

here is a wikipedia citation about it

>Latin America

>In Latin America, an Adult Swim block aired during the overnight hours on Cartoon Network.[when?] It was originally carried on the regional version of the channel, when it was pulled off and picked up by I.Sat, another Turner Broadcasting System Latin America/Time Warner-owned network, due to the fact that it was received with negative reviews from parents.[vague][citation needed]

>On October 29, 2010, I.Sat revealed they were cutting Adult Swim programming due to low ratings, adding: "No matter if we add new shows, it would not work".[72] Adult Swim once had a SAP audio in early 2007.

>In 2014, it was announced that Adult Swim would return to Latin America that same year.[73] Adult Swim premiered on the Brazilian feed of TBS on November 3, 2014.[74] Adult Swim was relaunched in Latin America on April 3, 2015 on I.Sat, premiering Rick and Morty for the first time on the region.

>If only he would have gotten into the plane.
All jokes aside the shitty Fox shows give that network money which they use on their the shows, which is good. Family Guy sucks donkey smegma, but American Dad and Bob's Burgers is alright. That being said Mcfarlane should pay a visit to the AS headquarters each Sunday get down on his knees and kiss Lazzo's stinky hillbilly ass. He owes a lot to that network, his superstar reputation would not have existed without FG reruns on Adult Swim
>>81801782
Nick ant Night has gotten better they play nothing but comfy sitcoms, not shit sitcoms like the one with the guy who cant shut the fuck about the country of Zimbabwe!
>>81801694
That era of the early Bush years was the last hurrah for subversive and experimental animation. MTV was still doing animation and actual funny reality shows about idiots getting tortured by their friends. But soon enough AS carried the torch, giving Anime of the most subversive kind a home, anybody remember Super Milk Chan, as well as surreal animations like ATHF and Squidbillies. Around that time everybody was doing shows in the light of the Simpsons, you know, safe adult sitcoms, in fact Matt and Trey were once told by a Fox executive that their show would never be on Fox because they were looking for more safe family sitcoms. AS sort of broke that with with shows like Venture Bros and Morel Orel. Soon every network was copying them and their late night format, G4 had the Midnight Spank, and Fox had Animation Domination.

I remember when I was kid and they were airing YYH uncut. I didn't want my folks to know I was watching it and about fucked up when that hourly message popped up and said in a robotic voice THIS IS A MATURE PROGRAM etc. Dad was in the next room on the computer but thankfully wasn't paying attention though it's my mom that would've given me shit.

I'm 25 now. What year was that even? I remember it was just after they all became a team. They were fighting a demon that could take apart its body and was made of rocks.

I need to rewatch it some time.

>I remember my mom not letting me watch it because it was called ADULT Swim
Man does this bring back memories. My lil' bro had shitty early 90s model TV in his room and we'd watch E, E, n' E late night. Then mom told us to shut it off and get our asses to bed, but before we did we used to get a sneak peak at the block. See thats the thing people forget about Adult Swim, whether it was intentional or not, it used reverse psychology on you on other forms of mind tricks. They would air shit like the powerpuff girls before the block started, and then came the scary black screen with the big letters or >>81802175 and unlike CN bumpers, this one had no noise, it reminded me of those FBI Warnings that came with each VHS movie which used to give me the creeps as a kid. You were curious so you stuck around for a bit. Its a classic move, air the good shit before the other shit, the Super Bowl does it all the time. Then came the reverse psychology. At the time explicit and profane gangsta rap as well as edgy emo and nu-metal music was all the rage, and they all came with this label in pic related. It was big and threatening and told us, "This isn't for you." So we become obsessed with that symbol, I used to thing music without it was shit. Its like that episode of Foster's when Bloo is told not to open a forbidden and he opens it anyway. AS had a similar thing with its black and and red scheme and warning bump, which simply told us, "You NEED to watch this." Also the way they advertised their shows made them seem larger than life.
>>81803195

I mean they have some good programming, but the problem is AS itself is absolutely unwatchable nowadays. At least in the Tim and Eric era they still would air at fairly large variety of shows, both old and new. Now anything that's not a FOX reruns is literally just like Aqua Teen, Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros., Mr. Pickles, and Children's Hospital.

No adult swim on TV over there.

i remember being particularly excited to watch the first night of [adult swim]. i honestly didn't even know what it was supposed to be, but i was an obsessive viewer of cartoon network and i just had to watch their latest programming block. my mom let me watch its first night, before she knew what it was either, but banned it thereafter because she felt it was too 'adult' for an 8 year old. i used to sneak viewings whenever i could, though, and often had sleepovers with relatives with less vigilant parents so we could watch [as] all night.

i was in middle school when they launched the [adult swim] fix. i used to fucking devour entire seasons of harvey birdman, sealab, brak show and all the other classic [as] shows i never got to watch regularly when they were premiering in single sittings.

I remember watching it when it first started because I heard someone at school hyping it up. Aqua Teen and the Brak Show and Home Movies. Loved the Brak show. I also bought season 1 of ATHF on DVD and watched it like a dozen times over.

For some reason one memory that stuck with me was watching AS all night until morning with my little bro and eating our entire supply of Italian ices. Late in the night they started showing Case Closed some other bizarre anime about like a fighting robot that came out of a kid's head. We had no idea what we were watching!

I can still taste that sweet, lemony Italian ice.

Man, I remember sitting in the basement watching Space Ghost and the late-night anime they used to show on the Sci-Fi Channel. Wow, I just had a full blown nostalgia trip.

So can someone tell me about the Home Movies fan theory about it having to do with a snuff film? I always see people mention it, but I can't find a detailed explanation anywhere. Weird shit like that interests me, but google is failing me.

I think I was about 6 in 2001 so I was kinda confused by why CN got weird late at night, that being said I did enjoy it because the shows were weird or action-y. Favorite show has to be either the Brak Show or ATHF, though the anime was GOAT too,

I remember when they still had old people in pools for their ads.

I was only 8 but that scene still makes me uncomfortable.

I caught SGC2C when it was first airing. Maybe 96. The zeitgeist was palpable. You really knew something in the air changing the playing field. It was something new, something different.

I caught adult swim on its third week during the Thursday rerun. Cowboy Bebop, man. Now, we knew what anime was. Dragon Ball Z was airing, the Pokemon pandemic was high, Toonami brought us Outlaw Star and Gundam Wing. It had a steadily-growing audience and we were discovering that other kids liked it too and it wasn't so embarrassing to talk about in public. But we hadn't seen anything like Cowboy Bebop.

So you got these two great cataclysms happening at once. You have these irreverent, unstructured, rebellious little pieces of no budget, just very raw- very novel. And you have the untapped potential of an entire culture of animated output being discovered by a Western audience that Nintendo and Sega had primed a generation of children to romanticize. Tied together with charming little bumpers that told you "ok enough with the traditional stuff, it's time to get Bohemian."

Adult Swim changed the game, plain and simple. Almost as much as The Simpsons did.

I know it's cool to hate popular things anon, but Rick and Morty is better than anything that hack has shit out.

Adult Swim got Family Guy revived. Initially they only syndicated the 3 pre-cancellation seasons and even showed an unaired episode. Family Guy had just as much right to be on Adult Swim as Mission Hill and Oblongs.

The downfall of Adult Swim was their refusal to cancel Aqua Teen. Fans of that show were stubborn and unwilling to give the newer shows a chance, and actively shit on every knew show (including ones that would go on to be classics like Metalocalypse) on internet forums across the web.

Don't act older than you are, Youngbloods.

AS got it revived, but there's no doubt that once FOX shows started airing on AS, they started getting crazy high ratings in comparison to most of the originals.

I was first introduced in 4th grade, so 2001 when it started.
Favorite memories are having a bad day at school and rushing home to see what was on the DVR
Favorite shows, FMA, Rick and Morty, FLCL, Venture Bros, Cowboy Bebop.
Thoughts on current AS: All the good stuff except R&M and TVB is either on Netflix or Toonami.

Damn son, fancy living there. I don't think I got a DVR until 2009.

I meant when DVRs started to become commonplace in 2004 or so.

Seeing one episode of FLCL and staying up late for the next month to see the rest was amazing.

I miss the older bump style, a lot of the newer stuff is cool but some of it is a little overdone.

I was using VHS tapes up until '07 and I know people who used them until the end of the decade

I didn't even have Cartoon Network when [as] started, so I actually turned to the scrambled channel where I could make out some of what was going on and hear most of the dialogue. And they said "damn" during Cowboy Bebop and my little middle school mind was blown.

I also miss those old original bumps with the actual pool.

In North America?

Yup

Adult Swim was amazing back in the early days. SGCTC still one of my favorite shows. I remember one day I tuned in and Yu Yu Hakusho was on, and it was the final saint beast battle. It got me hooked and I still get nostalgia thinking about how I would get excited waiting up late to watch it. Of course it eventually moved to toonami so I would watch it after class.

Also the bumps were the best, the anime was the best, and the comedies were the best. Too bad now all we get is Family Guy, and as much as i enjoy American Dad and Bob's Burgers they do not belong on Adult Swim.

>Adult Swim is going to show the Cowboy Funk episode of Cowboy Bebop
>9/11 happens

When I saw the episode later it was pretty tame and probably would have went by without outrage if they hadn't waited to air it.
>>
>>81826480
Yup. I remember that. Initially we had thought that Bebop was pulled for good in the wake of the attacks, but they ended up just putting it back on the air a few weeks after and skipping like 4 episodes that might be "offensive".
>>
>>81803823
Oh wow you didn't even get past the 3rd arc. It's pretty good
>>
>>81826638
It's honestly weird to think that AS pre-dated 9/11.

Actually no, Atlanta. Though I came from a lower-middle class background that wasn't great with keeping up to date with technology.

Hell, we still have a 20 year old tube tv in our living room.

Anybody remember when Adult Swim started airing TV-MA shows for the first time? I wanna say it was either Venture Bros or The Boondocks
