The point was to generate hype and outrage. People were hyped to see who was the dad as she hasn't been with a guy in years, the last guy was Hawkeye so people were guessing him. Others were angry or found the whole situation stupid that a superhero 8 months pregnant would go out and fight bad guys. Even if she fights some D-list villian from the 70s, a good hit in the giant surface area of her stomach will cause damage.

Instead we got a random sperm doctor. Then we got her dropping the baby off with some other superhero and she goes off on adventures.

The book is not about the baby as it does not even have a name. In a year or 2, the writers will forget she even had a baby. Just like how the writers of Thor forgot that Jane Foster has a kid.
