Zootopia is a masterpiece, I have every faith in Disney animators and producers to deliver and admittedly they got better at it.
Granted, this I don't think it is likely they will top emotional impact and depth of the first part, but they might as well explore other avenue of emotional engagement as it were.
Notwithstanding the above, I'll just be glad to see more Zootopia.

Well, this one took five years, didn't it? Because they scrapped one concept that had gotten pretty far, had to do a lot of research, and--unless I'm mistaken--invented new fur simulation tech, which took something like 8 months. Unless they wait a while to start I don't think it'd take five years.

I hope nothing we can guess - which will make it fresh and exiting.

also, I've read a comic posted here where Nick and Judy talk over the phone as Nick is away for a couple of months for his training. Is it official thing and how it's called because I want to order it?
>>
>>81585193
Expect a lot of merch to start coming out around September/October.
>>
>>81585193
Disney never has any merch when a movie first comes out.

As long as you don't act like a little kid about it you can have a few pieces of merchandise. Disney's an exception for a lot of Serious Adults anywayl.

Meh, I've just never been into it.

I'll give you the first one for being "revolutionary" and being a piece of nostalgia. It's not a bad film, just one I never really felt as obsessed over as most people.

Toy Story 2 was decent too. I will not, however, take back my comments regarding Toy Story 3. That is by far the most overrated animated film of all time, and in no way deserves the praise people give it. That it is at a 99% and higher than films like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke is absolutely disgusting.

Sorry for being so late but i just saw the movie. The flowers were contrived as fuck it's like they wrote them in at the end just to have a resolution. Also, Nick was too quick to fully opening up about his deepest problems and it made the relationship feel underdeveloped. I've just never been a fan of scenes where characters seem to be completely aware of what their subconscious drives are. Still overall good though. Clawhauser is life.

Yeah I'll agree with this, it wasn't the flowers as much as the really convenient way she found out about them being the cause. They just happen to have a conversation where they just happen to come up. Ok then.
>Nick was too quick to fully opening up about his deepest problems and it made the relationship feel underdeveloped. I've just never been a fan of scenes where characters seem to be completely aware of what their subconscious drives are.
I may have agreed on my first viewing but I've seen the film twice now and feel that she did save him and he obviously is very against other people being treated like he was. I don't think it was too quick at all, it seemed very relevant to their current situation so he confided in her, she'd proved to him that she was different so he decided to take a chance and open up to her, he was also quick to move away from the topic.
>I've just never been a fan of scenes where characters seem to be completely aware of what their subconscious drives are.
I actually really liked this, lot's of people know exactly why they do the things they do even if they don't necessarily think they are doing the right things in their lives. Nick knows that he could be more but feels the situation is too helpless to even bother trying.

You know... I love how the film turned out and honestly think that maybe the right decision was made.

That said -- I despise how often Disney film seem to have last-minute changes to make them more 'family friendly' according to the executives (mostly ex-Pixar people it seems). It's like they don't want American animation to take any steps forward and out of the 'kiddie' ghetto.

Well like I said, in this case it worked out fine. But then you have something like Frozen where they make it so Elsa is the villain... and then after hearing "Let it Go" suddenly she can't be the villain anymore because the song is 'too emotional' so they shoe-horn Hans in.

Executive meddling also, if I'm not mistaken, is really hurting Pixar too (if Brave and Good Dinosaur are any indication). Sometimes it works, but too much of it can neuter your final product to the point where it just feels so watered down.

I don't know. I mean... Disney is making so much $$ now they could probably afford to take a risk here and there.

Also let's not forget Disney has made some pretty dark stuff in the past (*cough*Lion King*cough*) and sure there's always some executive imput but it just seems like as long as Disney will have a monopoly on the film industry the least they could do is try to take some risks so their films don't all come across as the same.

Don't get me wrong I loved Zootopia, but it is still sad to see how much influence executives have over directors and their creative visions.

>Don't get me wrong I loved Zootopia, but it is still sad to see how much influence executives have over directors and their creative visions.

In Zootopia's case it really was the right idea, I think. Besides, it wasn't purely exec meddling, it came about after audience tests, which revealed that audiences were reacting in a completely different way than they wanted, so something clearly wasn't working. The question is why didn't they test their concept to an audience earlier.

Yeah they always seem to do overhauls at the last minute, and that really hampers the projects.

Zootopia just got lucky that Byron and Rich both are so talented that they were able to circumvent that and still produce a coherent, strong script that included a lot of plot-points yet did not seem overtly rushed.

In that case I give more credit to the directors than the executives.

Or they could have said 'fuck redemption' and actually have had Nick and Judy leave together.

I mean, fine I guess that would be strange for a Disney film (and like I said before -- I'm absolutely fine with how Zootopia came out -- I'm just not entirely on board with the principal it sets, along with the cases of Frozen, Bolt, etc) but it could still work.

Not every animated film needs to be a comedy, just like not every superhero film does. Just because BvS turned out to be shit doesn't mean DC should suddenly start going for the 'le quippy' tone of Marvel films.

There will be a company that will finally take these risks, and imho it will either be Laika (like an anon said) or DreamWorks (if Katzenberg is fired and replaced with someone who pushes for more HTTYD-like films).

I feel like the best possible ending they could have managed is one where they solve the crime, uncover the collar conspiracy, and set the city to healing on a better path--but still say "but fuck this place I'm tired of living here."

I'll never say I don't find the original premise fascinating, because I do and I would still watch a movie about it in a heartbeat, but there are very obvious issues with tone especially considering it was a Disney movie. From what we've seen it would've been more soul-crushing than Lilo & Stitch, very possibly without an emotional payoff of equal proportions and that honestly just doesn't sound like a Disney movie to me. I get why they changed it.

People bitched about HTTYD2 and 'that scene' as well being 'too dark'.

Of course people praise Disney when they go even a little dark, but if anyone else does they go apeshit.

Plus it doesn't help that HTTYD2 under-performed while shit like Home did better than expected. Now they seem scared to take risks and are focusing on kiddie bullshit.

It sucks because they have so much potential and talent there, and I'm sick of everyone sucking Pixar/Disney's dick. I want them to succeed, but they need to get some new CEO's first.

Nobody said there can't be dark films, but there has some sort of reason or meaning behind it. Judy and Nick would basically be casted out of conventional society, hunted and the ultimate message would be 'society is broken, you can't fix it no matter what. Fuck you'.

That's not only a message Disney would avoid, but it drown everything it represents.

I agree, there needs to variety. I would kill for genuine animated horror or historical drama. But there are ways to it correctly and incorrectly

>The flowers were contrived as fuck
The "convenient reveal" about the night howlers was convenient, but not as coincidental as you might think. It looks like Judy had been working on the farm for a few weeks, so there was plenty of time for the subject to come up.

Also, remember it was Gideon who unknowingly had the missing piece of the puzzle, and you have to figure that the Hopps had been avoiding him ever since Judy was a little bunny. It wasn't until Stu overcame his own bigotry that Gideon could make amends and (accidentally) help Judy solve the crime.

>I've just never been a fan of scenes where characters seem to be completely aware of what their subconscious drives are.
Nick's had a lot of time to mull over why the world seems stacked against him. He's the type who would understand his own motives.

Also, the biggest plot point in the entire movie was that Judy WASN'T aware of her subconscious drives. She was completely blind to her own bigotry against predators until Nick called her out on it

Nick had ambition since his early days and was eager to change as soon as someone believed in him, becoming jaded out of necessity. Judy was merely a catalyst which brought what was already in him all this time.

Would you be able to stand up to Bogo when he was yelling at Judy to release the badge or quiver in fear like a beta if you were in Nick's shoes?

I want to believe that, but really, it's still questionable. Byron being gay doesn't change the fact that straight guys can be bakers with the gayest design scheme if they don't really know or care how to market their pie business or that the design team thinks rural pie baking companies are going the way of the urban cupcake shop and think it's funny to make the former bully look girly.
Maybe in the sense that he understands that self-doubt manifests in more complex ways for gay people growing up, but it could just be his doubts regarding his dream, talents, and level of ability as a predator minority in a place with bunnies rule.

Dawn Bellwether had been grooming Judy to be the "face of the new ZPD" from the time she graduated policy academy:
>convinced Mayor Lionhart to hire her as part of the "mammal inclusion initiative".
>Pulled strings to get Judy assigned to the high-profile Downtown district.
>Maneuvered Judy onto the missing mammals case over Chief Bogo's objections.

Yeah, really is some MGS shit when you consider how far back and how deep her game goes. Even consider how perfect it is that she's a bunny for the more racist boonies. She was too perfect for Dawn to at least not make Lionheart think it's his own great idea to assign not just the first bunny, but to put her with those working on the missing predator's case. She probably counted on Manchas to kill Judy she didn't even have to bust Lionheart for that alone to divide the city.

The rabbits sins were forgiven, and the predators no longer hunted them down. They need only remember that differences should be celebrated, amd not boasted.

Otjer species had there own faith. Bellwether and her cohorts were actually religious extremists, not truly prepared for a world of peace between lions and lambs.

Rabbits are generally silent.
Except, when they are dying.
Then, they scream.
I know, because I have heard a rabbit scream, as my father clubbed it's head in with the butt of a pellet gun.
Judy's scream, in that moment, perfectly mirrored the scream of a dying Rabbit.
And, despite knowing this was a Disney movie. Despite knowing this was a happy ending right ahead, despite everything- in that moment, I, very quietly, lost my shit.

It's a survival trait. Not for that individual Rabbit, mind you, but the species as a whole. If one gets critically injured, it screams as loudly as it's tiny Rabbit body can, to warn every other rabbit of the danger. Judy's scream is that of a dying Rabbit. I'd be surprised if it wasn't a direct audio sample, but God knows how they got it.

So I get that in the movie they're just friends. It had a lot going on and shoehorning in a romance sub plot would have been too much and felt forced. Which is a good thing I think since now they can potentially become a couple in a more natural fashion.

I just hope if there's a sequel they let them be together, and do it well. I'm no writer, and I'm only one person. I don't know how Disney with their professionals could brainstorm and polish a story until it just feels right to make them getting together feel natural, but I'm sure they could do it just fine. I just really really fucking hope they do. Possibly on a level that is unhealthy. Help.

I create OCs for just about every single thing that piques my interest. Not officially, necessarily; if I have my way, less than a fraction will ever see the light of day in any way, shape, or form. But it's basically just an autistic character building exercise that I simply cannot keep myself from doing. It keeps me occupied during the slow hours and gives me some decent material for stuff now and then.

The really, really good ones I tend to edit for use in a tabletop game or something.

Actually, if any character is an unsung hero in the movie, it's Judy's dad Stu:
>Starts out as a bigoted redneck.
>Hates foxes to the point that he carries a taser to use on them if they get out of line.
>Encourages his daughter to carry fox-repellent spray when she goes away to the big city.
>Learns that her daughter has made friends with a fox.
>Does NOT go off the deep end, instead, re-thinks his attitude toward foxes.
>Makes amends with the fox that had bullied his daughter as a child.

Seriously, that is a major Heel-Face turn.

He has a soft spot for girly pop music, bonds with the girly guy, and has his own prejudices not just help define the political climate that causes the problems of the movie, but overcomes his prejudices. my gf follwed its tracks and I found it hiding under a stomp at first. and he screamed bc id imagine he freaked out and thought he was gona die or something like that."

Video description, the dude doesn't seem to give a fuck about hunting from his other videos so he just caught a random rabbit with his barehands.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Didn't think it'd be that easy.

It's not that much of a stereotype. Being the Chief of Police in a major metropolis is going to make you a hard-ass eventually, especially in a city as rife with bigotry as Zootopia. Bogo would be out of place if he wasn't busting everyone's chops.

It was more than that. He didn't even give her a chance to prove herself; he put her in the most pointless job he could as soon as he could, and then he tried to set her up to fail so he could force her to resign. He was taking advantage of her obvious sense of duty to make her do it.

To his credit (and to the credit of the people who wrote him), when Nick called him out about how bad he was treating Judy, he DID realize he wasn't acting like a police chief should. He looked ashamed of himself, and then went and tried to crack the missing mammal cases himself.

It seems like every major character in this movie has serious nuance. I can think of "adult" dramas that can't say that.

>Nick and Judy watch the movie
>they both found it entertaining, but the premise creeped them out
>to cope, they joke about how crazy it would be if that happened to one of them
>to make himself feel even better, Nick muses that if it was one of them, Judy would be the "Bolt"
>a young, eager police officer fresh out of the academy who overcomes the incredulity of her superiors, helps a jaded (but handsome) con artist turn to the side of righteousness, and saves the city from being eaten alive by fear and prejudice. A sure crowd pleaser of a yarn ripe with further story potential
>Judy tries to laugh it off, but is disturbed by how those events were framed
>She tries to turn the tables on Nick, citing how his more dramatic life would make him a compelling anti-hero hardened by childhood trauma and general suspicion towards his species.
>getting blackmailed, he Night Howlers, and becoming a cop were all part of an elaborate season finale to shake up the formula and take his show on an entirely different direction.
>Judy was introduced to act as a catalyst for the paradigm shift and to help phase out and ultimately supplant Finnick as Nick's co-star as the dynamic Nick shared with the smaller fox just wasn't pulling in the numbers anymore.
>Nick: Well if you're right, then that would make you the Mane-ic Pixie Dream Gal. You okay with that?
>Judy: Depends. Would you be okay with being the charismatic scoundrel with a heart of gold if you turn out to be right.
>they laugh
>and laugh
>but it's not the kind of mirth that reaches their eyes
>they spend the rest of the drive suspicious of one another and looking for flaws and inconsistencies with the "extras" and "sets."

>>81590473
For one thing, there has to be a level of convenience because a movie can only be so long. They had just shared not only a life-and-death experience where she saved him, then he sees that same discrimination and her literal dreams being crushed and steps in and saves her career like she saved his life. If that's not a key to open up for a little bit to tell a story to say "Hey, I know what you feel like" and give her some advice.

I mean, what would you have wanted? What's the master stroke of endearing a character to the audience in a short period of time? I mean, it obviously worked, even if your criticism is right (but it isn't).

>>81590569
His past behavior is the way it is because he tries hard to not let people close knowing he's liable to be hurt again. At first he's annoyed and coerced by her but that go-get-'em attitude of hers and the similar vein that they share softens his outer shell and then the circumstances leading up to that scene he allows her to see in some.

If you're going to complain about that, look more to the rushed ending sequence though even that is attached to this line.
>>
>>81590569
Vulnerable? He literally said nothing gets to him anymore, and even if he did he doesn't show anyone that it does.
Nick sees a bit of himself in Judy, especially by that time in the film and he starts to actually help her instead of trying to get the evidence back. He seemed to have completely forgotten about the recorder pen by the time Judy gives it back.

Tell a different story, or tell the same story but don't make it clear that it's of him.

"You know, Carrots, I know a guy where..."

Later on, Judy realizes that the "guy" was him. He gets to comfort her but remains aloof. Show that he cares but he wants to keep his distance, too. And it shows how Judy comes to understand him because she can see past his lies and see what he really means.

Lol. Dude. They write better than you, you have no right to complain.

For you, yes. However, the N/J relationship isn't as special to the average viewer, who is likely to say "OK I get it, they like each other. Show me new content." The development of N/J will still definitely be a part, though secondary. For the IP to stay relevant, it needs to explore entirely foreign places and issues, which will likely come with a new character.
So, assuming the 'duo' to 'trio' transition is a certainty (it might not be), what would you like to see as a new character?

Let me tell you a story anon.

Once upon a time there was an animated film called Toy Story 3. Near the end of the film Pixar decided to throw all of the emotionally manipulative bullshit they could at the screen to get people to cry when the toys are in the incinerator.

All seems lost, until they are saved by the aliens who were separated from them earlier, just happened to know exactly where they were (how can they see into the incinerator), and knew how to operate a human crane that just HAPPENED to have the keys in the ignition.

Now this film is often considered by snobs to be the pinnacle of animation. Tell me, if Toy Story 3 can get away with such a contrived ending and still be called a classic, why can't Zootopia have a little convenience here and there?

Just start with manipulating the rig to a certain pose and set up some lights and camera. Take a image render and see how long it takes. That should give you an idea of what it takes. That animation is 96 frames and my pc can render at around 8 minutes per frame for that scene. This is using just a 3570k (gpu/opencl is AIDS) the start learning about keys frames and have fun.

Parents can try to make their children happy, but there's nothing they can do to guarantee it. They can help them with it and be there for them, but it's up to them and their dumb luck to make it happen. That's what made Koslov and Morris' story so heart wrenching; Morris is a pure and happy child brought into the world to suffer and probably would be unable to escape the mob life.

Serum is used with blood, the Nighthowlers in the film seemed to activate on contact and is absorbed through the skin.
Bellweather "framing" Lionheart is odd, seeing as how she did next to nothing to cause those events in motion. If she had constantly led Judy in the direciton of Lionheart, then yes that would be framing but she only let her see cameras, which she didn't even get to follow up on.
>>
>>81591398
Awesome. This should be a subplot in the sequel.
>>
>>81591476
>Serum is used with blood
Oh, so a small technicality. Big deal.

>she did next to nothing to cause those events in motion.

As far as we were told/shown.
>>
>>81591476
It's easier to say "framed" than "I manipulated a series of events to coincide with his arrest to shape a narrative that puts me in power"
>>
>>81591362
>>81591403
Serum is made from blood. Extract is what Doug was using.

To frame someone is to make it seem like someone did something they didn't do. Lionheart didn't get the blame for making animals go savage, he was SET UP to look like he was covering up the nature of his kind.

And those weren't darts, they were pellets. She could have said that she's hit every predatory in Zootopia to have her way and it'd be fine.
>>
>>81591474
Because kids are mostly assholes
>>
>>81591511
Anon. It's inconsistent and seems to click more with the original script in terminology. Again not a movie breaking moment but it is most certainly rushed.
>Oh, so a small technicality. Big deal.
Personally id i wanted to ensure quality in a film i'd be as consistent as possible. so yes, BIG deal.
>>81591525
Dissecting the word isn't the problem, she's taking credit for something we didn't see her do at all.

Yes, but in...slang? Not sure how to put it, "Serum" has just kind of become a term for a chemical mixture, just like how "Hacking" has become a term for "doing illicit things involving computers".

Same thing with the word medicine. Ignorant people from all walks of life refer to just about every chemical used in pest control as "medicine."

But no, serum is hardly used outside of fiction because it's a fancy word that people who are smart enough to know it are smart enough not to use it and find alternatives like "liquid." Beauty products use the word serum to rebrand the same old product. "Now with serums!"

I can't stop thinking, what if the missing mammal case never happened? Judy would still be sent out on parking duty, and still confront Nick, but after that, would she run into him again?

Would she try to tail him to catch him doing something she could arrest him for out of some sense of pride? Theyd get to know each other sure, but would they become close? Probably not.
