Laurel represents a lot of things tumblr likes - she's a capable, independent woman with her own character arc and struggles with mental illness. The only things that could make her more their wheelhouse would be if she wasn't white or she was some manner of LGBT. Even their Olicity fans generally liked Laurel because of things like that. They also have an aversion to killing women, especially for the sake of male characters' pain (and, let's face it, Laurel is far from the first woman to die to make Oliver feel bad - in fact, there are only two left in his life that would have any meaning, and both of them have come within a hairsbreadth of death).

Merlyn fucks off to form a New League of Assassins with interesting and unique weirdos like Richard Dragon and Cheshire, maybe with help from the Sensei (Katana's father?). Season 5 has awesome flashbacks in Russia with seely Russian acksents and vodka and an explanation for that thing Oliver says before he drinks. Maybe Merlyn tries to ruin his daughter's life to bring her back to him and sends Cheshire after Roy to do it. Fill an episode with the first arc from New 52 Green Arrow, the one where a bunch of D-list supervillains try to livestream their killing of the Green Arrow.

I don't know what the overarching plot of Season 5 is (though it ends with someone trying to destroy Star City), but here's my idea for Season 6. It's the plot of volume 6 of New 52 Green Arrow. A new crime boss in town is uniting the gangs in a way similar to what Brick did in season 3, and as it goes on they learn he's a former League of Assassins member, Richard Dragon. The flashbacks for at least the first half of this season involve the time Oliver left Starling City between seasons 1 and 2, wherein Diggle tried to fight crime wearing the Arrow costume, especially drug dealing crime boss Ricardio Diaz. The mid-season involves finally revealing Richard Dragon at the same time the flashbacks show Diggle killing Diaz in front of his teenage/young adult son, Ricardio Diaz Jr. At least one flashback in the second half of the season involves Diaz training under the League for his vengeance, maybe alongside Maseo and Sara. Fuck it, do a whole slew of League training flashbacks, it'd be awesome. Ollie has to gather up a bunch of heroes to beat Richard Dragon's crime army and once again save Star City from being destroyed.

Is it too much to hope that because of Laurel's last words, Oliver will realize he wasn't in love with Felicity and is sick of her shit and will stay away from her to work on himself?

This isn't a "misstep" or anything like that. Laurel's awfully-written death is just the latest in Arrow's bad decisions.

I think people will finally give this a vote of no confidence. This isn't like a show having one or two bad episodes, or even one or two bad seasons. In both cases, the central conceit of the show is still preserved, and it's just done badly.

Arrow, on the other hand, is a completely different show than it was before, and it's also 100% a worse show in that regard. It is nearly impossible for a show to maintain its viewership when it "changes" to a worse show. This usually happens on mystery shows, when a huge seasons-long mystery is finally solved (Twin Peaks is the most famous one; Pretty Little Liars 6A to 6B is a more recent example).

Still, the same can happen (and seems to be happening) for a non-mystery show. And, as far as I can tell, this will definitely happen to Arrow.

What will kill this show (just as it killed PLL) won't be the hate, but rather will be viewers suddenly realizing how apathetic they are about Arrow. Sure, there are a couple of loose-ends, but PLL had loose-ends as well, and people didn't give a singular crap about them, either (6B's finale had the lowest ratings the show EVER had, which is doubly surprising for a PLL season finale).

And I know I'm mentioning PLL a lot, but I have no doubt that there's a large bit of overlap. And given that the PLL fanbase ACTUALLY dropped the show, I wouldn't be surprised if Arrow started on an actual, genuine decline in ratings.
