That's like saying Karkat having to overcome his own blood insecurities doesn't require anything aside from existing. After all, he's almost never been actively discriminated against on screen, it's all internalized.

Anything towards which a character has an emotional reaction and attachment to can be a challenge, it does not need to involve a specific act or action, sometimes being able to emotionally cope and survive an ordeal is all a character needs to do.

People can argue that Cinderella had all the gifts and solutions handed to her on a silver platter and while that is the case that she only got by the kindness of others, by saying that, you miss out on the story of someone who had to survive and stay pure through a shitton of bullshit.

There's lots of different kinds of characters, conflicts and stories, you can't just decide one doesn't count because you already chose to dislike the character.

Is Gamzee going to have one moment, just one, to be redeemed? Vriska and Eridan were redeemed. I think Andrew showed us that moment of Gamzee crying in the fridge to remind us that he's not a monster, he's a fool. He's being manipulated by people smarter than he is. He saw Lil' Cal as the best friend he'd ever had. Probably because everyone else on the meteor hated his clownish antics. Ever since he left on his own he's been surrounded by people like Kurloz and Meulin who tell him he's doing the right thing. Gamzee believes that he's doing whats best. So he puts up with constant abuse to do what he believes he has to do. I think he may have started realizing here that he may have made the wrong choice. But, since he was locked away, this Gamzee hasn't had time to be fully brainwashed. So there could be redemption.

Okay, full disclosure, here. I haven't played Undertal and know almost nothing about it. When I saw it, I had no idea it was a node at Undertal and it felt perfectly fitting. I was thinking "Oh, they are referencing Earthbound, nice use of the interface to represent the fight, there".

A reference is out of place if it feel out of place for the one who don't know the reference. It wasn't the case.

So there you have it, no problem with the inclusion, it's just you who is turned off by Undertal for some reason.

Karkat took the time to realize this because it's an actual part of his story so he ends up developing a relationship that is- even if it's presented in a shitty and sudden way- in the story, it is developed naturally over time without him forcing it on the other party.

Jade's story has never been especially focused on romance, her crush on Dave is little more than character flavoring. It's not that big of a deal, she's more broken up about having been completely alone for three years rather than being isolated from any one person in particular.
