>Wakanda acting like a primitive country that suffers from primitive problems
>>
>>81495926
> Despite the difference in style and practice of storytelling, my approach to comic books ultimately differs little from my approach to journalism. In both forms, I am trying to answer a question. In my work forThe AtlanticI have, for some time, been asking a particular question: Can a society part with, and triumph over, the very plunder that made it possible? InBlack Pantherthere is a simpler question: Can a good man be a king, and would an advanced society tolerate a monarch? Research is crucial in both cases. The Black Panther I offer pulls from the archives of Marvel and the character’s own long history. But it also pulls from the very real history of society—from the pre-colonial era of Africa, the peasant rebellions that wracked Europe toward the end of the Middle Ages, the American Civil War, the Arab Spring, and the rise ofisis.

> in part, made possible by a cold-eyed approach to sentence-craft.

And this, too, is the fulfillment of the 9-year-old in me. ReadingThe Amazing Spider-Mancomic books as a kid, I didn’t just take in the hero’s latest amazing feat; I wrestled seriously with his celebrated tagline—“With great power comes great responsibility.” Chris Claremont’sThe Uncanny X‑Menwasn’t just about an ultracool band of rebels. That series sought to grapple with the role of minorities in society—both the inner power and the outward persecution that come with that status. And so it is (I hope) withBlack Panther. The questions are what motivate the action. The questions, ultimately, are more necessary than the answers.

Why don't they just make an army of Black Panther warriors?

It's just training, schooling, and gadgets.

>>
>>81497578
he is a highly respected non-fiction writer. his work is studied in universities.

he's also black and a huge comics nerd.

/pol/ tourists and insecure shitposters will refer to him as a "racebaiter" because he has written about racism before.
>>
>>81495743
>>81495792
This looks pretty good. As someone who is developing a historical comic with real world issues I'm going to be really interested to see how he can balance something that, typically, is not a strong suit for the medium.

Ta-Nehisi Coates(/ˌtɑːnəˈhɑːsiˈkoʊts/tah-nə-hah-seekohts;[1]born September 30, 1975)[2]is an American writer, journalist, and educator. In 2008 he published a memoir,The Beautiful Struggle: A Father, Two Sons, and an Unlikely Road to Manhood. His second book,Between the World and Me, was released in July 2015. How so?

Poltical crises marry deep drama with intense large scale violence.

Perfect for comics.

The 100, Game of Thrones, Claremont,Weisman and Shakespeare understood this.
Have as much ultra action as you want as long as people talk about how the ultra action makea them feem
>>
>>81497879
>Won the MacArthur Genius grant

fuck man, that's insane. you get like 600,000 dollars over five years. guess he can take lower paying comic gigs with that cash
>>
>>81497936
I see a common failing in comics where political drama is a 3 page affair at most, build up for battle (and interpersonal conflicts) is 10 pages, and action scenes are another 10. It's not a bad thing by any stretch, it's the nature of what people want from comics. It's just that the substance behind the strife is usually a superficial element because we want to see soap operas and battles in our funny books. It's just staging for drama and action, rather than telling a story that feels like a real piece of history unfolding.

>>
>>81496003
fuck yes this is what I've always wanted to be addressed. Black Panther, Aquaman, Black Bolt, Namor, all of these guys are fucking absolute monarchs and I've always wondered why no one in universe has ever discussed with them the pitfalls and negatives of monarchy. It always seemed weird that comics were glorifying an institution that the west decided was horrible a long time ago
>>
>>81500468
that's because they're in the other thread
>>
>>81496301
Because it's not just that.
There's a kind of herb they eat that increases their senses and physical abilities to being just about on par with Captain America, but the herb only works on the royal bloodline. Everyone else just gets poisoned and dies.
Also, the kind of training you'd need to do is INTENSE, and most people can't even physically hack special forces training, which by necessity is several leagues BELOW what you'd have to be capable of to be a superhero.
>>
>>81500010
Because Dial H was actually good and China Cuckville didn't insert his terrible political beliefs into the comic, at least not in a way that was obvious and ham-fisted as fuck. Not to mention DC didn't parade China around like a show pony, unlike what Marvel is doing with this guy.
>>
>>81505903
How do you know Black Panther isn't good? how do you know Coates inserted his political beliefs into the comic?

and anon, you can seriously just say it's because Mieville is white and Coates is black, we all know that's the reason
>>
>>81505953
Nice try, faggot. These white SJW writers are worse than a black SJW writer because they're far more prevalent. And /co/ loves Priest's Black Panther, so fuck off. And I didn't claim this asshole's Black Panther is good or not, but don't be surprised if it turns out to be a hunk of shit. Especially considering that's why he was brought on to write it anyways and the other creative members of the team making this book. It's meant to be more trash that Marvel can point out and scream, "LOOK HOW PROGRESSIVE WE STILL ARE!". But hey this guy could actually do a 360 and tell Marvel to fuck off and actually write a good Black Panther comic that isn't ass full of left-wing shit politics. But I ain't holding my breath.

>>
I'm drawn in right off the bat because it's raising an interesting question: Wakanda is a fairly advanced society, so why do the people accept still having an absolute monarchy? I think we can all agree that T'Chala isn't a BAD guy, but is there really such a thing as a good supreme ruler?
>>
>>81506082
>But hey this guy could actually do a 360 and tell Marvel to fuck off and actually write a good Black Panther comic that isn't ass full of left-wing shit politics. But I ain't holding my breath.
>Well boss issit okay iffun I write the comic as long as I do it just like you white folks like it boss? I promise to make the white folks look goodun smart and not make waves yessir
>>
>>81507005
I almost thought you were doing a parody of a SJW, but then I realized this is /co/ and you're being completely serious.
>>
>>81506312
Because you're ignorant and they don't always do that in Africa.
"Africa is all the Democratic Republic of Congo" is wrong and basically straight up racism mixed with ignorance.
I loathe SJW's as much as the next guy, but I hate dumb asses even more because half of the time they make an active choice to be fucking retarded, and thus like SJW's contribute nothing to anything in their environments and lives and should probably be removed as a waste of human resources.

Also, from a practical standpoint, 20 people is a small 'army".
And a lot still wouldn't complete the training because that's at least half mental as it is physical.
>>
>>81506082
so is writing about how a highly advanced civilization might react to an absolute monarch "ass full of left-wing shit politics"?
>>
>>81507175
Oh? You've read all the issues already?
>>
>>81506992
Yes, actually.
There is no such thing as an inherently bad system of government; systems of government are basically just ideas mind you, and ideas aren't good or bad in most cases because they don't physically hurt anything unless acted upon.
There's at least two recent monarchs in human history who are VERY excellent monarchs and hugely improved their countries for the better in real life.

The issue with a hereditary absolutist monarchy is that by it's very nature requires exceptional human beings to NOT abuse the power the position grants you, and I mean not just physically exceptional but mentally and with sound and logical moral reasoning level of exceptional.
The reason exceptional people are exceptional is because by definition the vast majority of rest of us are NOT exceptional, and thus there's really no guarantee that the child of an amazing monarch will be equally competent and decent at heart with sound judgement, and in fact there's hundreds and hundreds of historical examples that say the exact opposite and that "genes" do not transmit automatic competency at rulership.

So yes; T'Challa is an excellent monarch and monarchies can be good, but in the real world when he died if his son was even just average instead of an amazing human being everything he worked for would be completely undone.
>>
>>81507225
I mean, we have previews showing basically that and he's said in pretty much every interview that's what he's doing
>>
>>81507237
Yeah, that's a good point. I imagine that's probably the reason the people may be troubled in this run, because even if T'Chala's a good guy, his kid could totally be shit, and the people still don't have any power (as far as we know) to decide for themselves how they want their country to be run even if T'Chala does a good job at it.

I mean, if I were in a monarchy, and I saw countries that were LESS advanced than mine giving the common person a role in government, I think I'd be wondering why I can't.
>>
>>81506312
The same reason superman doesnt have 20 kids to make more supermen to save the world. Cos then it'd be a fucking boring story with no problems because there are twenty superman flying around making the other heroes redundant and each single character less than unique
>>
>>81507237
>There is no such thing as an inherently bad system of government
Except Communism and Socialism.
>>
>>81506312
Are big families something exclusive to Africa? I'm an African living in Africa and I don't see families with lots of children as common and I assumed the same was true all over except where there are cultural incentives to have huge families.
>>
>>81507308
America was pretty socialist until Nixon

hell, the post-war country that everyone idealizes was pretty much built on a socialist bill
>>
>>81507299
I also don't think we really know what freedoms the Wakandan people have. Is there freedom of speech and press? Do they even have press at all? I don't think these are really things we've seen in BP stories and I hope those are things that are explored.
>>
>>81507314
it's just people thinking Africa is a country and much smaller than it is and think they can make generalizations because of this
>>
Man that guy is so black even his text boxes are black. Literally the niggerest
>>
>>81507299
Back during Priest's run (when BP was actually good), it actually showed that T'Challa is probably a better man then his father was by a fairly wide margin.
T'Chaka was a beloved ruler, but was more or less a very traditionalist Wakandan ruler and thus kind of didn't want the country to help fix it's internal problems and vaguely encouraged Wakandan's heavily xenophobic behavior by not discouraging it.

T'Challa (who was educated abroad) constantly tried to help his countryman overcome their xenophobic failings and tribal rivalries while still struggling to be a good king and protect national interests. His goal was basically to drag Wakanda kicking and screaming into being a global player that played nice with others even though most Wakandan's would very much rather shoot anyone that crossed the border.

Priest said he based it off of the very real tribal problems that lots of Africa had; certain nations, especially ones in North and West Africa aren't doing too bad and have swiftly growing economies (one is so fucking wealthy that they could afford to build an entire small CITY for their national sports interests), but the wealth is often divided up amongst old tribal loyalties and division between urban and rural areas that are deeply troubled. A lot of really basic social conflicts in some parts of central and Southern Africa are tribal in nature as well, and it's REALLY hard resolving those while also trying to repair your national economy and direct it's growth to areas that need more of it.
>>
>>81507308
>Except Communism and Socialism.
Incorrect. In fact you could say they are the "fairest" systems of government.
The real problem is they require a lot of management to work right and that management often lends itself to taking advantage of the system that's supposed to be fair.
So basically it CAN work, but it requires either selfless human beings or a complex mixture with other governing ideas like in the Nordic countries, both of which require rare and outlying circumstances.

So the problem is that we're a species of horrible fuckheads at heart I guess.
>>81507314
He's being a idiot, basically.
Unfortunate the US has crappy knowledge of other countries, which is partially because the nation is so big their neighbors are almost always likely to be Americans like themselves.

>>81507358
They have both freedom of press AND freedom of speech. They have numerous civil and tribal liberties as well.
They just don't have freedom of government.

why not is marvel being sued for this shit, the title and the character are racist as shit. call the new hulk yellow hulk, and morales mixspiderman. because when you find a red or blue panther, call me. Its just "Panther" panthers are black, seriously...
I know, better yet "Black panthigger"
>>
>>81507693
Black panthers aren't actually a species, they're leopards or jaguars, and just panther is a general term for leopards, jaguars, and mountain lions (which are sometimes called panthers and have a subspecies called the Florida panther), and there can actually be white panthers, although they're not as common as the black variant, since those were selectively bred

This is the only thing that irks me. People are talking about this guy writing Black Panther as if it's the second coming of Christ and he's going to bring sophistication to an immature medium, which is just bad for comics in general. Meanwhile Dial H ran heavily under the radar and was amazingly good.
