It would actually be kind of a cool plot point that military ideas be programmed with 'respect for life' in order to keep them from going full skynet as a result of political policy that failed to understand that the biggest part of making a human into a soldier is making them okay with taking life. An actual warbot could very well be a mounted auto-turret that couldn't move. There are a lot of things that are in your memory that you aren't accounting for.
