Only thing I like from the first is finnick having more of a role. Otherwise I'm glad it's gone. Besides being a lot more depressing it just feels much more blunt and heavy handed.

And I wanna hug lil nick and tell him he's a cool cat and not just a predator. And not do anything lewd to him because childhood innocence is precious.

Don't worry everyone!

Just because Zootopia 1 had to drop all the dystopian elements, doesn't mean Zootopia 2 can't bring them all back.

Since Zootopia is meant to be the actual utopia, I'm sure there are plenty of other cities where discrimination and preds having to wear shock collars is alive and well.

Just think, Nick and Judy could be sent on a case to one of those cities and Nick could be forced to wear a shock collar just to enter!

Surely the bleak nightmare of despair can still be born!

Was anyone else a bit bothered by this scene in the actual film? The documentary even said they had to go on and on trying to perfect it, but...fuck idk.

Why did Judy say all that shit? she was nervous? and why didn't Nick let her explain herself? idk that whole scene just irked me, it felt like a sort of rushed/forced way to cause a breakup between them for plot's sake, unless I'm just not seeing it

It's not that he was confused by what she said. That's not the point. Like they said, it's a question of her trust for him. What she said showed him that at some level she really didn't.
>>
>>81463665

No, you're right: it wasn't handled very well. Something more than just that flashback was needed to establish Nick's emotional response to Judy's Q&A.

Impressed.
>>
>>81463635

Judy was nervous and she was basically repeating what she heard from the doctor/scientist that was talking to the mayor in that facility.

Nick was triggered from all of the photos of muzzled animals and called Judy out on still being uneasy enough to still carry around fox repellant.

What level? Judy had all trust in Nick, didn't she? Judy didn't hate predators like bellweather, the things she said was not out of racist shit but wasn't it just nerves? Nick should have let her explain herself instead of going instantly frumpy. I really didn't get it
>>
>>81463635
Earlier in the movie it was established that Judy was automatically distrustful of foxes, despite all her speeches about tolerance and stuff.

During the press conference she repeated the doctor's tentative suggestion because she herself totally bought into it. Nick already knew she distrusted his kind on some level thanks to the fox repellent. She confirmed how deep that went in her heart and saw zero issue with it.

I do think it could have used work.
>>
>>81463635
She didn't even know she was going to be speaking right? Have you ever had to give a speech in front of hundreds, even dozens of people? It is easy to freeze up and say the wrong things, even when you've rehearsed. Considering she hadn't rehearsed at all, it makes sense that she would panic and start saying the wrong things.
>>
>>81463635
I'd say there isn't a single problem with the movie up until that scene.
>>
>>81463777
Deep down, she thought Nick might go savage. You don't really trust someone if you think they might stab you in the back
>>

>>
>>81463232
It was basically their first draft that they spent most of their time revising, and kept convincing themselves it would all work out in the end because they were pouring so much effort into the project.
And then Pixar showed up and told them to cut that shit out, and they realized that they were really just fooling themselves into hoping the final product would be "more fun" as long as they kept altering it bit by bit.

It bothered me at first, but after giving it some thought it works.

Nobody was really in the right or the wrong this scene, it was emotion overriding everything resulting in the media blowing the top. Judy wasn't wrong by portraying the facts of the case, but she wasn't right either because there were better and more responsible ways to do it. Nick wasn't wrong for being pissed, after all people already didn't like him this would only make it worse not to mention all the bad memories, but he wasn't right either because he was blaming Judy despite it really not being her fault and knowing she isn't that kind of person.
>>
>>81463635
It's a scene to force the duo to hate split apart at the end of the second act to lead back into getting together and confronting the villain in the third act that has been such a shitty trope for buddy duo films and feels especially forced here
Judy is going by the same explanation the doctor researching the savage predators said, and she says it because the doctor has spent the most time studying them and no one else could give a better explanation. What really makes it feel forced is that one scene has her showing off her extended knowledge of plant life due to growing up on the farm but she has to go back to the farm to learn that night howlers make the animals go savage

That scene and then everything afterwards kinda lacked, the plot was then way too rushed. like, right after the breakup gideon conviently gives away the entire plot then judy and nick are best friends again then the case is solved. the pacing was bad. although after watching the doc they were likely on a major time crunch which is why it probably happened

I'm glad you fucks are actually discussing this scene, the first time I saw the film I had no issues, but the second time...yeah I honestly felt it was REALLY fucking poorly done just for the sake of "we need drama quick"

Nick should have let her speak instead of getting all offended instantly, ask her "why did you say all that shit?"

Though Judy also said that she was "just stating the facts of the case" which was a really weird fucking line to me, almost out of character..I honestly expected "Oh no, that all came out wrong, didn't, it?" and Nick being upset but talking to her about what she said.

Shit man idk

While I dislike the comparison to race, here it might illuminate it.

Say the doctor theorized that blacks were criminal and violent because of their biology. Then you go up and say the exact same thing to the press. How would your token sidekick take it? What, you believe that stranger over your friend?

The "stating the facts of the case" bit was just because she trusted what she heard from that scientist. Nick was irritated quickly because Judy was probably the first person he ever told that story of what happened to him at the cub scouts, and despite having heard that story and knowing how deeply it affected him, she still told the press that predators may have a tendency to revert back to being savages.

I know there aren't supposed to be any racial metaphors in the movie, but to me the line about it probably having to do with their biology is kind of like saying "a person committed a crime, likely due to their racial heritage."

Its' a hugely backhanded comment to Nick, and then she sort of defends herself by saying "it's not like (my race) could ever do that"

Storming out before she can reiterate is understandable, it just took them a while to talk it out again

I mean it's obvious what happened, but it felt so fucking rushed and out of character. It'd be nice to know how Rich would explain what went on in Judy and Nick's head during that scene, why she said what she said ( was it just nerves or is she legit thinking that preds are all becoming savage again) and why Nick didn't give her the time to explain herself.

I actually remember exactly where it starts going downhill; the reporters ask what's causing it, and she says they don't know. The reporters get all disappointed and some start turning to leave, and she panics, and I think that's when she mentions that it might be biological. She can't stand letting anyone down, so she absolutely has to have an answer and throws out the only theory she's heard so far; the one from the doctor earlier in the movie. A lot of people complain about the scene but I think it's fine, honestly.

Well, do all sheep look like Doug, or does Doug look like all other sheep?
>>
>>81464227

Early in the movie it's established that she internally holds some bias towards predators despite the fact that she actively tries to not be biased. She's reluctant to take the fox spray from her parents, but then she double takes and grabs it anyway because deep down she stereotypes predators to be more violent than prey.

Is the break up scene kind of forced? Yeah, but I don't think anything Judy said was out of character.

I really wish we could have the darker, edgier zootopia with all the collars.

I understand the themes wouldn't end up being subtle but I think seeing Nick as a neurotic amusement park owner having the everliving shit beat out of him through the course of the story make for a really good movie with tons of feels.

Not that the one we have now is bad. I just wish we could unleash the animators and let a blend of family friendly and more adult genres exist.

I hope the prequel comic is about Nick and his dad trying to get "SUITOPIA" off of the ground. They don't even need the collars for it, just the prejudice towards them for being foxes:

https://youtu.be/D3pF9owYlRI?t=2024

I know the Ranger Scout bit gets a lot of praise, but this could've been a much more compelling origin story and would've really fleshed out his issues with authority, particularly with the police since a cop had tried to have him arrested due to a complete misunderstanding.

I'd have been fine with Zootopia 1.0

I know that people are all "but it's too bleak and cartoonish and there's no reason for Nick to stay in the end"

But the reason to stay is to not lose. Not lose to the shitty world, not just give up and be a cynic coward or a pessimist asshole. To fight against despair. To reach the happy ending or die trying.

To die in glory fighting against fate, or to grab your happy ending.

maybe that was the plan, make sense difficult, pred numbers go down, they start becoming more detached from the rest of society, a smaller and smaller minority that has fewer interactions with the rest of the city, going from "that family next door" to "that guy I sometimes see on the way to work" to "Who?" and the whole way none of the prey care, since it doesn't affect them, there's no outright evil like them being rounded up, it's just a natural result of low birth rates. And then in a hundred years when the few remaining preds try to get the collars removed, no one will stand with them, because "those collars kept you civilized, which let us build this great city"
>>

I suppose

>>81465854

>>
>>81463635
The devs ran out of time, I think. If anything it was a natural scene with Judy being oblivious to her own biases and Nick being a cry baby. And I emphasize on Nick being a cry baby.

Nick perfectly knew Judy was from the burrows and he could have been more understanding. Clearly, Judy didn't mean what she said. Also, he's been discriminated all his life. Why would Judy's opinion hurt him so much? Maybe its cause he really really likes her.

I could see that as being the point where some of the story people and animators justy don't care how bleak the movie got. There was probably one storyboard that included something like Nick and Judy eloping only for them to fade from existence as "the ancient, forsaken God awakens from his slumber and all Zootopia fades into a memory of a dream. Also, Judy realizes she never was really a police officer and Nick never got his collar off."

A wether is a male sheep that is castrated before maturity to prevent it from breeding the ewes. A bellwether is a wether used to lead flocks of sheep.

Because of their castration, wethers more closely resemble females rather than males in adulthood.

I wonder if another reason they dropped the collars is because didn't want kids getting the wrong idea about their pets' collars. When a dog wears a collar they see it as a symbol of pride because it represents their being a part of their master's pack, and more importantly it keeps them from getting lost because it has their ID on it. A kid watching the movie wouldn't really understand that though, and all they'd know is that in the movie they were putting collars on the predators to be mean to them.
>>

Because she was bumbling like an idiot in front of the press. If it had gone on longer who knew what would've come out of her mouth, and she already said what Bellwether was hoping she'd say.

The conspiracy is that the sheep are behind it, as opposed to the incredibly depressing reality that it's a policy supported by the majority of people in the town and their elected officials reflect those opinions.

Basically pretending that there is a conspiracy to avoid having to admit that most people view her as one provocation away from killing people and support keeping predators collared.

Yeah the press conference was a thinly veiled "mandatory third act misunderstanding" and that seems to be in pretty much every animated movie. It could have been handled better, and it could have been handled worse. I think what bugs people about it is that while we did know that Judy had biases about foxes with the way she was immediately suspicious of Nick and then patronizing towards him when trying to be nice to him, I think most people thought that she had put that behind her after Nick gave her his heart to heart talk on the tram car, only for her to go spill her spaghetti at the press conference.

You know, how would gaming work in Zootopia?
If I had to take a guess, they'd get around the controller size problem by dividing controllers into two parts, the base that sends the inputs to the console, and then an outer shell that actually has the buttons.
Make multiple sizes of the outer shell that's compatible with the same base core, and you'd easily get more bang for your buck.
Animals without defined fingers could use joysticks if necessary.
>>
>>81465187

Another subtle point was the mayor wasn't actually doing any work. Dawn was. She probably knew about his secret lab, secret hit squad, and doctors just from the payroll. She probably was ready to get Lionheart arrested the second Judy showed up asking for camera footage.

You know, that's kinda what I find interesting about their relationship. Before he met Judy, Nick didn't have any friends -- and why would he, if they'd just stab him in his back at some point? He didn't feel he needed actual support, and that he could live essentially as a hermit in one way or another. At the end of the day, he didn't truly want to be like this, but he still felt it to be better than the alternative, if he could call it that.

After meeting Judy, and then after spending an extended amount of time with her, Nick slowly comes to the realization that he's experiencing a feeling he hasn't encountered in about 20 years -- being in good company. He feels emotionally connected rather than opposed, and now her company satisfies his craving for social interaction that he always felt deep down but tried to suppress. For once, he's starting to become dependent rather than trying to achieve full independence.

But once Judy said something that struck a nerve in him, the new way he perceived the world was broken. Once again, someone he came close to tried to go in for the kill, and almost instantly he reverts back to his original state. If he had given up there and then, he wouldn't have emerged wiser, but with better reason to say "I should have known" to himself.

I don't think the city of Zootopia, the version in the final film, is by any means an utopia. I think rather than a dystopian setting like proto-Zootopia was, it's just a city. We shall transcend grief! We shall evolve beyond the mortal feeling of sorrow and achieve a new superior existence.

As lifeforms that no longer succumb to base sorrow or anger but lifeforms that can simply enjoy and advance from any experience.

To the point where we could enjoy a Zootopia that ended in Nick and Judy dying and the entire city collapsing in on itself or a Zootopia where Judy and Nick saved the day perfectly, and got married and became the greatest cops ever equally.
>>
Very quick, minor question about the ending of the movie:

Was there a line I missed that explains how the police showed up so quickly to apprehend Bellweather at the end? They were pretty much there immediately after she realized the Night Howler had failed, but I can't figure out if we're supposed to assume she had called the police to respond to the crime scene or if Nick/Judy had tipped off the ZPD offscreen.

I dunno, I could totally be wrong. But, when you think about it, you're at the literal heart of Zootopia; it'd actually make some sense. But I'm probably just remembering the city layout wrong. BD can't come out fast enough.

Never jacked off to anything related to this movie, but him being a married gay guy and going on about privilege in that documentary explained pretty much everything on why the movie became what it is. Yeah, the old concept played right into the SJW concept of a hierarchy of privilege which is kind of bullshit. As we see in the movie foxes do have it pretty bad, but bigotry and bias go both ways. Predators are a minority but they hold many key positions of power in the city, and make up a disproportionate amount of the police force compared to prey. None of the animals are a direct analog to any specific type of person, and the movie is much better for it.

Obviously.

Of course, we will never know which was better, cant compare a fully animated film to some storyboard sketches. I will say the message would have been much profound in the original, whereas in the current story it just seems to be tacked on in the second act

oh, of course it would be lighter. And to be serious, if I was told to integrate Proto-Zootopia into the actual movies, I'd probably make it a book Nick wrote and published under a penname. It's actually pretty popular and basically Zootopia's 1984, though Nick doesn't really give a damn about it's reception, it just bounced around in his head until he put it to paper.

Not all of them. Some people actually do keep captive wild foxes/ones bought through a breeder. The domesticated ones are relatively rare and cost a pretty penny.

Wild foxes aren't really dangerous to humans, but if you brought one into your home you can expect your house to be pretty thoroughly trashed.

A domesticated fox from Russia goes for about $9000 when all the import / licensing fees are taken into account, which is expensive although it's comparable to buying a fancy dog. There's also some that have a Georgian White coat coloring, which only appears in the domesticated breed, and foxes with that coloring could pass as a domesticated dog to the unsuspecting passerby.

If you sign up for a breeding program you might get some of your money back eventually, although that's somewhat relative because the cost of owning a pet isn't cheap. Owning a fox is comparable to owning a small dog, and a dog costs about $1000 a year when the cost of food and vet visits is taken into account. You also need to make sure that there is a veterinarian's office nearby who is comfortable giving your fox checkups since not all vets will treat exotic pets (though a fox is not nearly as daunting as something like a puma, obviously).

>>
>>81468203
A lot of people don't realize what they would be getting into though. You probably wouldn't want to keep your fox in the house, for example, because of the smell and the fact that they are pretty destructive. And then you would need a lot of enclosed space for them to live in outside. Not all people have yards big enough for that. You also need to consider how you are going to keep them from digging out of their enclosure, since they love to dig. The decision to adopt a fox should not be taken lightly, for your sake and the fox's. They demand a lot of attention and a lot of upkeep.
