Frank's psychology is often contrasted with his adversaries or are the worst of the worst.

And of course Garth Ennis loves to throw in a joke or two.

Frank sets up an ambush and it goes spectacularly well. It's a rare moment in the comic that captures Frank's fleeting moments of feeling something.

Ennis run is pretty good. Leans more to the humorous side, but still quite violent and with a serious Frank. Welcome Back Frank is a great read, 12 issues. Then comes a longer volume, but Ennis skipped a bunch of issues halfway and those aren't very good.

Rule of thumb, if it says Ennis on the cover, it's good

Watch Daredevil season 2. It's very Frank and draws from a few landmark Punisher stories.
Also highly recommend the first two 6-issue arcs of Punisher: War Zone and early Punisher: War Journal.
His earliest appearances don't really make sense because when he first showed up in Spider-Man he was clearly insane. It took a little while for him to grow into the Frank we all know and love.

Also Punisher: Born is a good read but there's weird demonic bullshit explaining Punisher's sKills. Also stay VERY far away from anything from after he died during Dark Avengers and came back with magic angel guns, that was some bullshit. The story about him in the afterlife being a FRANKenstein flying on a dragon in hell was neat but completely inappropriate to the character.

There's also a more recent story where he's got a beard and eyepatch and is basically the artist drawing Big Boss from Metal Gear Solid and calling him "Punisher", but it's a pretty good read.

Honestly this.

Diving into Frank's psyche is one of the cooler aspects of the comics. Frank hasn't gone off the deep end and start killing indiscriminately, but he's not a redeemable character I don't think. It's kinda hammered to you numerous times; he just won't stop despite how futile it all is.

My favorite thing about Bernthal Punisher in DD is the whole Deniro/Taxi Driver vibe he's got going on.

I always thought that if they rebooted The Punisher a third time , they should look to Taxi Driver as inspiration for Frank. All that's missing is inner monologues/"war journal" aspect. They captured it almost perfectly in the show.

I still think that The Punisher would work a lot better in his own "universe" separate from the rest of Marvel. Seems any powered or advanced Armored hero like Iron Man wold have been able to bring this guy in by now.

He's also probably one of the few in cape comics where "Tacticool" actually works.

So, there's gonna be a new Punisher ongoing. Any chance it'll be good?

He shits on him a lot; off the top of my head, books where he's done it include The Boys, Marvel Knights Punisher, 303, Thor: Vikings, and Crossed: Badlands.

Punisher :pov was pretty good in my opinion. it will be jarring to those used to Ennis Frank, but the story is quite entertaining.
