Nah. It was actually well-written, gave Batman something resembling an actual character arc, a more interesting story towards the end, the best animated incarnation of the Outsiders and an absolutely based version of Killer Croc.

But yes, Magpie was fun too.

Pyg's very different. He's nowhere as psychotic and disturbing as in the Morrison run, though he gets kinda creepy in this last appearance. Pyg and Mr. Toad have more of a Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd dynamic meets Wind in the Willows where they fuck shit up and then pretend to do it for animal rights.

Again, it's very different, but they're not bad characters. The show just has better villains than them.

One other pro I'll mention that other anon didn't - BtB had GORGEOUS animation. The second Magpie episode climaxes with a fight in a cemetary while it rains, and it's just breathtaking, especially considering how budget every other CGI cartoon I've seen looks (maybe GLTAS was as good, but it's hard to tell with the reliance on zero-g environments and lasers. BtB, by deign of having actually well choreographed/animated martial arts fights, was just that much more impressive.

Anon, if you're starting with post-Crisis Batman, I strongly recommend reading Detective Comics alongside it - primarily because the Mike Barr/Alan Davis really is fun, beautiful to look at, and provides a nice release valve from the darker tone of the main Batman title (I know you may be enjoying Max Collins now, but Jim Starlin takes over after that and it's all body counts and diplomatic immunity)

...and partially so you won't be caught off guard when you reach Knightfall and discover it's one of those accursed collect-all-our-titles 90s crossovers, but fortunately they return to each book being self-contained after that... it just takes like a year. Or two.

Speaking as someone who enjoys most pre-Crisis Batman in one way or another? No, there really isn't very much worthwhile in the main book leading up to CoIE/Year One. In fact, when I read through the entirety of Batman from '66 through '86 and on, that run was the one I really struggled to finish, even knowing all the goodness that lay beyond it.

Most of it is spent on Doug Moench's pet characters, and while Killer Croc's early appearances are fun, it runs into the pre-Crisis Jason Todd stuff, which while it's amusing at first to see how differently he was originally conceived, it's one long, dull, soap operatic slog through Nocturne, Moench's half-assed attempt at a love interest villainess, and her long-winded monologues about THE NIGHT. Between that, the THRILLING Jason Todd custody battle, and the fact that Moench's writing is even more TL,DR than this post... woof.

But, by all means, try reading it if you want to. At the worst, you'll see what I mean and I'll finally have a /co/mrade who knows my pain.

Honestly making him an asshole Post-Crisis was an improvement.
