Was Garfield ever funny?

He was, when you were too young to try to be hip on the internet.

I don't know anon, do you find lasagna being murdered hilarious?

>>

Bastard! How much lasagna did you eat to heal those wounds?
>>
Infinitely funnier than Heathcliffe
>>
>>81408235
>>81408284
Do you perhaps, masturbate furiously when imagining the lasagna you love to eat is alive and you are eating it alive.
>>
>>81408326
I know I do, it's the circle of life. I wonder if Garfield cums on his Lasagna before devouring it.
>>
>>81408392
When I was younger I always had the feeling that Garfield did this, I'm not sure why. So every time my mom served lasagna I became aroused.
>>
>>81408425
So in the end, yes I do find Garfield funny but only because he made me feel funny.

I remember really enyoing an old cartoon of garfield, it was nice, that's it.

Back when he used to say stuff like "people who do X should be dragged out into the street and shot"

>>81408134
Yes. The first ten years or so of Garfield had a very dry and cynical sense of humor. He was like if Daria was a cat. Jim Davis was great with words and could have you chuckling just from one of Jon's dumb, meandering stories about life on the farm. Now obviously it is pretty different but if you like sarcastic humor then yeah it was good. Once.

This may be a longshot, but does anyome recall a book of collected comics in the same format as those garfield 5x7 books, but it was about dogs and dog humor, might have been from Farside, but the cover had some aborigine-looking dogs in a jungle with a human tied to a post and a large volcano with a dog face chiseled into it?

Despite all of the mispelling and all that shit, there's a coherent storyline and character arcs throughout the entire thing. Plus, there's plenty of good and well-timed sound effects and all that.

It's not preachy, and it isn't trying to desperately mimic or recapture what the original garfielf video did. It uses the same elements, but expands upon them and sets them in a new genre.

As one anon said: despite all of the attempts to make it horrible, it has become something unironically enjoyable.

This right here. Most people think Garfield has always been the same drivel it was during the 90's, that it only had some art shifts. Go back through and read it for yourself, and you will see that isn't the case. From the start to the end of the 80's, Garfield was all over the place. Humor, drama, random disturbing bits, it had it all. Characters were introduced and changed, like Jon's friend, that cat Nermal, Garfield's stormy relationship with his GF, and various members of Garfield's family like his grandfather and mother. Then in the late 80's when Garfield really started getting popular, Jim Davis handed off writing duties to some other writers. From that point until the late 2000's when Jon finally managed to get with Liz, it was just generic newspaper comic humor with a never-changing universe. Occasional visits to Jon's family, but you really could take any year's worth of strips and exchange them with any other year's worth and not notice a difference. Then sometime in late 2000 or so Jon got with Liz and things have actually been somewhat different. Still somewhat stuck in the 90's to late 2000's generic slog, but at least something actually changed.

Garfield's 9 Lives was both disturbing and depressing, and I think it serves as a good idea of what early Garfield was.
>>
>>81415744
That definitely sounds like Farside to me.
>>
>>81420573
That's not really praise for watterson, it's just stating the undeniable fact that watterson wanted nothing to do with merchandising because of the effect he felt it would have on the value of the comic, or characters.

Personally, I think Watterson was wrong on that.
>>
>>81413272
it gets better and better

Oh hey, do they still make The Garfield Show episodes? Last I heard it was stuck between seasons YEARS ago. I heard it might've been developing into a half hour series with some sort of plotline, but fuck it I don't care to look it up, though again has anyone heard anything?
>>
>>81408134
I grew up in the late 80's to early 90's. We didn't have the internet like you do today. Most people and most of your free time you didn't have the internet at all. What remained was small town bullshit. In such a slow, unfunny, lets-be-like-road-rules-on-mtv-because-we-don't-know-better context, yes garfield could have been funny

it's been so long I don't actually remember though

it was a meme that us smol people clung to, until we could quickly cast it off in favor of someting awful, rathergood, 4chan, and the inevitable death of our soul

>>81417678

Garfield is just a corporate mouthpiece
>>
>4chan hates Watterson now
I never thought I'd see the day

As for Garfield, I think it's alright. He's bitter, that's for sure, and I like that. But most comics just fall flat, especially the ones that involve him eating or being mean to Odie. The less happy Garfield is, the funnier the comic has a chance of being.

The bigger problem Garfield has is the commercialization of the comic strips. Christmas strips have ten strip countdowns, as do birthday strips, which is just annoying since it means ten days wasted on unfunny non-jokes. All because he's a "household name."

>From the start to the end of the 80's, Garfield was all over the place. Humor, drama, random disturbing bits, it had it all.

Yes—it actually deserved its early success and was marketed quite firmly to adults (and not just as a symbol of cuteness). The early TPB collections were, famously, bestsellers.

The downswing came when Davis teamed up with cowriter Brett Koth, who improved US ACRES dramatically but turned Garfield into a weak tea of sight gags and spider-squashing. Any of the Garfield birthday books has Davis praising Koth through the roof for his visual humor—but actually, Koth's effect on Garfield was really bad.

This is not fucking comedy. One of the most standard joke conventions is setting up an expectation, and then defying said expectation.
In this comic, the dialogue essentially reads like this:
"X"
"X is false."
AND THEN LAUGHTER HAPPENS
?????????

Does Irma even appear anymore?

Or Lyman, Helen (garfields girlfriend, whatever she is called), Pookey (the teddybear), or Garfields grandpa?

Irma, Arleen(garfields GF) and Pooky still appear I think, but I can't remember the last time any of garfields family made an appearance outside of the 80's.

Yep, every now and then you see Ma, Pa, and Doc Boy, but I'm not too sure about grandma. Haven't seen Jon's aunt since the 80's either as far as I know.

>The downswing came when Davis teamed up with cowriter Brett Koth, who improved US ACRES dramatically but turned Garfield into a weak tea of sight gags and spider-squashing

Also Jon got Flanderized hard.

This was entertaining, but not "funny" and OP is asking if he was every funny

I didn't like the farm portion of the show that much though but it was okay
