Bombing in China too.

>Superhero franchise movie “Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice” slumped at the Chinese box office as it entered its second week of release.

>On Friday (April 1) the film earned $2.57 million (RMB16.7 million) and slipped from first place to fourth in the Chinese box office rankings. That score represents a drop of 85% compared with the previous Friday (March 25,) when it opened in China with $18.4 million as part of a globally coordinated day-and-date release.

Hopefully. I don't understand why studios feel the need to control good directors and make their movies shit but they let hacks like Snyder have free reign

Dude, it's beyond reparable. If this movie does good, DCfriends will be insufferable, but if it does bad It'll be about the same. DC friends will continue to defend it until the bitter end, and Marvel Friends will be just as bad.

But you faggots just don't understand it! Why should DC make their own movies while fixing Marvel's mistakes like the shit villains? They should just keep making the same movies Marvel does, but without the jokes! Those are the problems! This is all Marvel's fault!

I'm not saying there should be sides. I'm saying that you know what it was like here for the past few years. How it was going to break a billion instantly, change cinema, be an Oscar winner, etc.

What do you think is going to happen when the thing bring propped up disappoints?
>>
>>81371509
I literally predicted an 80% drop I think on Monday or Tuesday, and even I'm truly shocked that it came true. If that holds the entire weekend, it's fucked. It'll end up on 700 and change. They'll literally be losing money on it at that level, just like Sony with ASM2.

This isn't the end of the DCEU; WB have invested too much to let it fail and they're balls deep in the gambler's fallacy at this stage, so they'll keep plugging away until something finally works or they end up in chapter 11, but it might well be the end of Batman for a long, long time. Never cast a difficult star who's also a fan of the character.

I'm pretty sure 99.9% of /co/ would like there to be good movies from both Marvel and DC.

They were dumb enough to put the future of the entire franchise in his hands with very little oversight. They signed him for 3 gigantic projects and made him the exec for all other DC films, after he made a single Superman film that received mixed reviews.

WB was scrambling to get this franchise started and so far every decision seems to have been a hasty and ill advised one.
Say what you will about Marvel, but they took their time. They built a world and characters before they threw them into a gigantic blender.

Whenever such a project flops, it's because the makers were more interested in advertising the bigger prospects on the horizon than actually making a good movie on its own.

Come to think of it, Marvel's the only cinematic universe that comes to mind that isn't a complete fuckup.
>DC handles its first movie terribly and instead of adressing its flaws in its followup, they just make the flaws even more pronounced
>Sony turns its movies into Powerpoint presentations of potential spin-offs and sequel plot points without making a decent movie

81% is not a normal drop. 60% is fatal for most movies. Say you make $45m opening weekend on a $120m budget. That's actually pretty modest as bigger budgets go - we're getting to the stage where it's more like the average, even though there are still plenty of movies made for a fraction of that - but the domestic from a movie that has an opener like that is going to be roughly $18m the second weekend, 7 the third and 3 the fourth, and the total domestic at that point will be more or less where it finishes - something like $110m, with another 5% to come on top of that in the final 2 months of release.

With a 50% drop that same movie with that same opening weekend would finish on something more like $127m with another 5% to come (in this case another $6.3m, whereas the other example is just $5.5m).

The percentage of the drop matters a lot - and the higher the drop, the worse the end result for the gross will be, because almost nothing recovers at the second or third weekend.

Age of Ultron dropped in fact about 60% between the first and second weekends - $77,746,929 Fri-Sun on we2 compared to $191,271,109 for we1, closer to 59% (which makes a big difference as you can see).

The reason that AoU was able to survive that 60% drop is because it literally made so much money in the first 7 days (and especially the first weekend, which was a lot higher than BvS) that the drop was still to levels that would, on any other movie, be a great *first* weekend. The weekend after that it dropped again - as all movies do - but a more manageable 50%.

BvS has good elements to it, but its main problem is that it has three separate films going on at once. Batman's detective work would make a great film on it's own, but it clashes horribly with Lex's political schemes. I was waiting for Lex to tie the three films together into a single narrative and it didn't happen.
MoS's main story is nowhere near as good as BvS's story threads, but it only has the one story thread. It's a very clean, tight script and you don't lose focus like you do in BvS.

I get that this is a circle jerk thread but lets put up some comparisons.

Furious 7 had a 72% drop after its first week.
Age of Ultron a 74% drop
HP:DHp1 a 66.2% drop
HP:DHp2 an 84% drop
Iron Man 3 71% drop
GotG 67.5 drop
TDK 65% drop
TDKR 76.6% drop
Avengers 63% drop
Deadpool 65% drop

BvS certainly is high on its Friday comparison. That's something that should not be ignored.

But it's still lower a drop than Part 2 of Deathly Hollows which made over a billion. It still has no competition in theaters until May giving it an entire month to be the only blockbuster for audiences.
There's also something to be said about how top loaded some of these movies are meaning a sharp decline after release is expected.

Trend among all the films listed above though is that their opening domestic gross makes up nearly a third to a fourth of their total domestic gross.

Just off that this film should make around 500million alone at home.

Sorry haters the movie is still on track to be a financial success no matter how much you bitch about it online.

Blockbusters don't rely on growth anymore. New marketing strategy is to pack as many theaters as possible opening weekend and brace yourself for the sharp dive because everything is top loaded.

This is the internet age son. Reviews go up and everyone has access to them. Relying on word of mouth won't get you dick because you are competing against instancy. No one needs to wait for someone in their circle to see the film in order to know how a movie is anymore. You need to bring in as many people as possible before anyone can tell someone about how a movie is.

At least with iconic and notable franchises.

This is represented in both the Indominutus and the film itself. So what does it say when a good old T Rex comes charging through and kills the newer, prettier dinosaur? To me, it said "Yeah, you can't beat the originals," which then leads to the question of "Then why the fuck did I sit through your sequel if you're just going to admit the originals did it better?"

DC beats Marvel in the bookstore sales on a regular basis though Marvel's been experiencing growth in the last like two to three years.

DC didn't copy Marvel on that department. They'd been cultivated a TPB market in the bookstores since the 80's while Marvel was still fixated on floppies. They didn't "jump ship" to the bookstore market.

Establishing shots, smooth scene transitions, an imposing villain, Superman's optimism in the face of a bleak world, Batman actually showing his growth from murderer over the edge to being a hero again
Visuals minus the CG Doomsday fight, soundtrack was nice, Batman was great, Superman when he actually got to speak was cool, dialogue was decent at times, some of the cinematic references were cool
Obviously it can, see Superman II or STAS or MoS

As others have said, they're expensive as fuck. Marvel has done plenty of trades of old story lines, DC hardly does that. Marvel has also done healthy paper back reprinting of the classic stuff and affordable prices. DC attempted a bit of that with the Chronicles series, but that had shit paper stock and petered out.

>He was good when he played the guy who played Superman
>Needed more exposition, instead of the "well the fans will probably get what this means, even though this universe is brand new and breaks all ties with the main DC canon, meaning everything is up in the air" approach with Robin's costume and his constant references to people who are gone
>Levity would have been nice, humor isn't impostant. Found some of the "jokes" really bad, like "Everytime we say goodbye, you die a little." I mean I'm a Cole Porter fan, so I'm not sure if most other people got what the hell that line was supposed to be, but it just felt like a forced joke reference to a song most people have likely only heard in a movie they already forgot.
>Context for Batman and Luthor. Everything about their motivation is ambigious, unless you call on what you know of different versions of these characters, and even then there is such a major disconnection between what those versions and these versions do, that you can't rely on what you think you know
>I liked when the characters weren't wearing their suit and acted like normal people, even if they were up to something else in the background
>Yes, it's called Superman I & II, as well as the fan-edit of Returns called Superman Restored. Those are good Superman movies.
>Less too much, more in the wrong way. I mean wouldn't it have made more sense to set up the 3 (mostly) off-screen characters like this instead:

Flash:
>Doomsday Attacks
>Stone about to crush civillian, red flash whizzes past, saving the civillian, then lingering for a moment in tourist clothes before hurrying off in normal speed
Aquaman:
>Lois drops the kryptonite into the ocean

>Do you like Cavill
From what I've seen of the guy, he's likeable, but doesn't seem to be all that great actingwise.
>Do you like Cavill's Superman
No. It's a complete misread of the Superman character and a lame way to copy/paste the Nolan formula to a character that is inherently supposed to be fun and explicitly unrealistic.
>Do you like Affleck
Yeah, he's a good actor and a better director.
>Do you like Affleck's Batman
It wasn't really Batman. It was more like a parody of the DKR batman which was already a parody of the vigilante archetype.

>Do you think a Superman movie can ever be good or engaging
Yes, absolutely. You can do that character right. Too much effort trying to humanize the character when the whole point is that he is a god and an ideal come to life.

Yes, it wanted to be everything Marvel has already established and then a sequel to Man of Steel on top of it. It could've been a competent MoS sequel if it got rid of the unnecessary Justice League shoehorning.

I'm going to add on to all your points with my own, because I left the theater feeling indifferent about this movie, but the more I thought about all the stupid shit and inconsistencies, the more I hated it. By the time I got home I had a fucking hate boner for this movie.

1. The kids ditching their escort. Why? fucking why? She wasn't being mean, she wasn't herding them or deny them anything. She just talked on her phone while she followed them.

2. The evacuation notice goes out just seconds after their pod leaves, but for some reason they don't get the message until they're far out in the field. Neither does the ride operator attempt to call out to them.

3. the movie keeps trying to stress that dinosaurs aren't monsters that are out to hunt humans: they're just animals. And then they make them stop acting like animals so they can hunt humans specifically.

They made a very clear point that the Irex was on a steady and unwavering path south, yet for some reason it back tracks in order to attack chris pratt at the old jurassic park visitor's center that the kids were at earlier

4. the Irex's bullshit laundry list of power

5. The Irex's ability to communicate with rapters despite it never being socialized. Social animals that are kept isolated from others of their kind will not learn the social skills needed to effectively communicate. Yet it just starts talking away with rapters and takes command despite never even seeing a rapter before in its life.

6. The extremely personal death of that one lady, while the main human villain dies off screen

7. The T-rex and the rapter fucking teaming up

8. the FUCKING RAPTER UNDERSTANDING CHRIS PRATT'S NOD REEEEEEEE

9. all those times they bring up the first Jurassic park, as if saying "hey, remember the first one? The only good one?"

Personality or depth to Superman's character. Some parts dragged on, especially in the middle. Doomsday's beard. A clearer motivation for Lex beyond being mad at his father and God and being crazy.

>All those books you listed are exactly my point. DC for the longest time entrenched it's book market off the 80s classics and failed to capitalize on their modern stuff.

V For Vendetta is the only book on my list that was actually from the 80's. Sandman only counts as 80's if you think a comic where most of its issues were published in the 90's yet its first year was 1989 counts as an "80's" comic. Kingdom Come was from the mid-90's. Earth One line started in 2010 and Marvel tried to copy it by doing Season One OGNs (which flopped).

And you want more? Batman: Hush, All Star Superman are still in print and those were from the 00's. Long Halloween is from the 90's.

>I can find Spider-Man books at B&N from 2000-present, can't do that with DC. Only nu52 or the classics.
>Only nu52
>and failed to capitalize on their modern stuff.

Those two statements contradict each other.

And if you think Marvel keeps all their stuff in print, try and find the last volumes of Essential X-Men. The Deadpool Omnibus was out of print by the time of the movie. And there's a lot of others.

Technically, those old Universal monster movies formed a cinematic universe, hence all the crossovers.

Well I liked MoS. Went into this movie fully expecting to disagree with the critics, as I did with MoS.

Suffice to say, that did not happen.

>>81373623
If you're a DC fag, then you SHOULD be hating Snyder, in hopes that Warner Brothers puts someone competent in charge of their universe.

Do they draw regular Sonic or the Sonic Boom "Scarf and Tape" version?

What about Mario? Where is he on the list of most drawn?
>>
>>81376987
Just because those things probably would not be there if Batman killed all the time, does not mean other things would not be there.

Right now, you are imagining a world where Batman ended after like 100 issues since they are all dead and those are faded memories, an alternate timeline scenario if you will.

But I must say, you are helping my point that "no kill" is to keep reusing villains. No Joker, No Todd. No Ras, No Talia, No Damian.

its easier to come up with new villains when you have a few decades of breathing room between them

I think this has nothing to do with no kill rules and shit, if the writers aren't creative with the new villains that's merely the writers' fault.
If, imagine, Batman kills the Joker in their newest confrontation, months/years after that a new writer would just find a stupid way to make the Joker come back because he/she wants to write him.
Like, didn't Barracuda come back twice or something, despite the fact that Frank always shoots to kill? Dr. Octopus also is obviously having a comeback despite dying to dramatically as an half-hero

The repetitiveness of the stories and villains don't have much to do with in-universe explanations, in the end
>>
>>81376526
>Mercy Graves
Her being killed off made me curse out loud in the theater. Nippon Mercy was cute as hell in the role and comic Lex wouldn't have left her to burn under any circumstances. Goddamn Snyder.

Both companies are having a hard time with their comics. Difference is that Marvel is inflated by Star Wars, so no one notices how poorly their superhero stuff sells.

They really don't draw sonic himself that much, they draw the black one and the red one a lot.

I mean a lot.

And for mario, you'll see coins and mushrooms. But there are more kids attempting to draw captain america than mario.

Terrio wasn't the issue. Snyder's changes were. There is a good script hidden in BVS. Snyder is always the issue he is a bad filmmaker.
>>
>>81377983
WRONG. Jigsaw keeps coming back. That's his thing. He's a giant mound of scar tissue at this point but he keeps coming back.
>>
>>81377883
He was in Sonic Boom. So you're wrong.
>>
>>81377988
You can tell where Terrio's script ended and Goyer/Snyder's began and it's when the bomb goes off at the hearing. Up until then the movie was kind of a political thriller, with characters having clear motivations. After that Batman just goes psycho, Snyder ramps the Christ imagery up to 1000% and all the JL setup happens that felt out of place.

Quite similar to mine. I'd put IM3 lower than BvS though, I almost fell asleep watching that one.
>>
>>81379374
Age of Ultron was completely mediocre, but I can't say I was ever bored when I was watching it, which wasn't the case with BvS.
>>
>>81379424
Yeah, AoU was an entertaining trainwreck. BvS was a boring trainwreck.

Also AoU had Vision, whose scenes I enjoyed more than anything in BvS.
>>
>>81379424
>but I can't say I was ever bored when I was watching it
I was. At least the action scenes in BvS were cool, the warehouse fight alone was worth watching the entire movie for. AoU felt like I was watching an episode of Power Rangers. Actually, both Avengers movies felt like that to me.
>>
>>81379545
all the action of BvS was crammed into the last 20 minutes, and most of it was muddy and hard to follow

warehouse fight was cool, but it really felt shoehorned
>>
>>81379592
I didn't find it hard to follow. It was 2v1 mostly, they weren't fighting an army of robots. I could have done without Doomsday's stupid electricity power, but the fight was pretty easy to follow. The only disappointing fight in BvS was Batman vs Superman, surprisingly. It was really short and Batman pretty much shit on Superman for 90% of it.
>>
>>81379592
>hard to follow
What are you talking about? They were easy to follow.
>>
>>81379806
>>81379768
well not hard to follow

but a lot of the action was muddy
>>
>>81378706
Shit, that would be an amazingly clever way to save the franchise. That would be an almost legendary bait-and-switch. I'd watch the shit out of whatever movie dropped the bomb.
>>
>>81375563
>>Do you dislike Snyder on principle

I don't like the guy but I like some of his movies DotD and Watchmen are pretty gud

>>Do you like Cavill

Cavill seems like a complete bro so yeah

>>Do you like Cavill's Superman

Liked it in MoS but I hated the movie, I hated his performance in BvS but liked BvS more than MoS

>>Do you like Affleck

Of course

>>Do you like Affleck's Batman

It was actually really good

>>Did you want humour

I don't need quips all the time, but humor does help drama. Like imagine during a fight if Superman saved a child and the kid said something funny. It's not meant to make us laugh on our asses but it's something cute and light that could be used to show us the impact Clark has on a child, the future generations of humanity, and the world as a whole.

>>What was missing

Felt like the film was missing heart, like one of the questions asked in the movie was "Does the world need Superman" and honestly by the end the film I couldn't say yes. I didn't feel inspired, I didn't feel hopeful.

That's what people are talking about when they criticize tone, it's not that we need dance offs but we do need inspiration because that's what Superman should do. He should inspire the world, give humanity the strength to help each other and save themselves. I don't think it should be 100% bleak because then we just have some weird God figure who really doesn't care about people other than some begruding false sense of obligation.

>>What did you enjoy

The fight scenes were amazing

>>Do you think a Superman movie can ever be good or engaging

Yes, I don't think being a traditional action movie serves Superman though. Hell if you look at the best Superman comics he doesn't even need to be fighting villians half the time. Needs to be a film first and an action/cape movie second.

>>Was BVS trying to do too much

It tried to do too much in the wrong stuff and failed to do enough in what mattered.
>>
>>81379874
The CGI was a little overblown in the Trinity vs Doomsday, that's my only real complain.
>>
>>81379971
>Watchmen
>pretty gud
plz go
>>
>>81380406
Watchmen was fine,

I will admit I hated the ending change because it undermines the fundamental point of the disaster in the comic, but the editing and the direction of the movie are amazing.
