In a nutshell, New52 tried too hard to be a full "reboot from scratch". So, they didn't incorporate a lot of things that they previously had.

Add in the editorial nightmares associated with it all ("hey, can i use this hero/villain for my--" "NO, THEY HAVE TO BE INTRODUCED IN THIS WAY." or "NO, WRITER X HAS DIBS ON THEIR INTRO." or "NO, BLAHBLAHBLAH I'M A BAD EDITOR WHO'S GOING TO APPEAL TO THE BOSSES BY FORCING YOU TO WRITE CRAP WHILE NOT STEPPING ON ANYONE'S TOES.")

Keeping all these things in mind, it's no surprise that the Batfamily books were successful, since their editing group was much more lenient.

Still, and I think this is the most important thing -- the whole point of this is to tell better stories. When you have more in your arsenal, there's a greater potential to hit something amazing. It's the equivalent of a deck of cards: you might have a lot of combinations with, say, 26 cards, but 52 cards will MASSIVELY dwarf those possibilities.

sweet. You'll likely end up dropping a book or two, just out of personal taste and the like, but yeah, connected universes are one of the biggest reasons I still read comics.

There are a few characters that will turn me off a book, like Harley Quinn for example and I tend to not want to continue reading, but I find that reading them for even just minor background references to other characters, like seeing a kid walk past with a Green Lantern t shirt on, makes it worth it.

I find it makes the world seem real, these people like Constantine or Commissioner Gordon are still going around, doing their thing while Superman fights a space god in orbit.

To each their own, though. If you'd like to read some "good" GL /co/ will shit on me for having an opinion here, I cannot recommend enough starting with the, fittingly named, Green Lantern Rebirth. It really kicked the character and their series into full gear.

I find them easy to read, because they've changed so little over the years, especially with the likes of New 52, pretty much nothing was retconned. They had a pretty dedicated writer for a long time and he really helped shaped the mythology.

I'm sure you'll find a few favourite characters to rant about on /co/.
