Welcome to the official thread of the Felidae scanlation project. I'm your friendly neighborhood Ouash (trust me on this one - I can't use my name or trip due to April Fool's...) and I'm currently working on the translation of a German comic about murder, mystery, intrigue, and sex. Oh, and all the characters are cats.
Maybe you saw the thread with the German version posted a day or two ago. Now, you'll be able to read it in English! Well, half of it. I'm currently working on the final half and will be posting pages as they're finished.
If you've already read the pages so far, stick around anyway! I've improved some dialogue from my first draft.

Really digging the artwork in this. Apparently the guy behind it later ended up at Dreamworks, and he worked on the original movie as a layout artist too.

I love this page.
Remember, if you want to give your project a home of sorts, you can post it on /coc/ (/co/ collaborations) board on plus 4chan. You won't get much replies on that board, and maybe none at all, but your thread will be there safely for months. That place is more of a slow forum.

Thanks, I think I'll go post it over there after tonight. I'm going to try and finish all the pages tonight but there should still be room for some editing and translation improvements by then.

Oh, and a little heads-up. To prevent underage porn spams (which used to happen often), the new rule over there is that you can only start threads with PNGs.
>>81352766
Oh? Good to know I guess. But that's kind of bizarre. Why .png's? Because the file format doesn't allow any way to embed extra data?

Not much to report this time, but then again it wasn't exactly text heavy. You're still lacking on the pause commas though.

progeneration -> procreation (?)
i'm guessing since i've never seen "progeneration" before. remember buble2 (procre-what) if i'm right

"the" because pascal refers to a room

Never seen the movie, but this was surprisingly dark.
Some of the chapter transitions felt so hammy I kept pondering if the writer was italian, despite his name.

Love the owner's reaction.
Hey folks, working on the corrections ( >>81363180 and >>81363361 ) right now, and I'm almost done.
But I would like to hear a general opinion on the issue of the cats being "in heat". The nice fellow's suggestions here >>81363361 mentioned I shouldn't use the term "in heat" because while tomcats can get horny, they don't go into a heat cycle like female cats. So I went through and reworded some things to replace references to the cats being in heat.
However, then I had a second thought. I looked up people questioning in English whether male cats could go into heat (this apparently is a misconception I and many other people had). The answer was overwhelmingly, "technically tomcats don't go into heat", as expected. But the German uses the term "rollig" over and over (and once brĂ¼nstig which means basically the same thing as rollig). So I figured I must've misinterpreted the meaning and it was being used in the comic as a word simply meaning "horny". But then I made the exact same Google search in German, to find Germans asking if male cats can be "rollig" or have "Rolligkeit", and I found the exact same misunderstanding/misconception. Some people thought it was incorrect to say male cats become "rollig", others thought it was correct.
So the question is, do refer to the male cats being in heat like was (incorrectly) said in the original book, or should I "fix" this? Opinions on this? And if there are some native Germans around here that could clear up the specifics of "rollig", that would be helpful for my decision. Because when I think of "horny" as simply meaning in down to fuck, I would choose the word "geil". Rollig seems to be specifically for animals. But then, I'm not a native so I can't be sure.
Pic related, an example of one of the only few ways I can reword this dialogue to exclude an reference to "in heat". Compare with >>81350442
>>81366499
why did they draw his balls
>>81368204
>men have balls
>WOW mind blown
>>81367599
If it is a legitimate mistake by the author you should include it. It's usually not the translator's job to do a factual correction.
And yes, from personal understanding I would not describe male cats as "rollig" as they don't show the same behaviour as female cats do, that is, roll themselves on the ground. It's also just a term for animals, but that doesn't mean much as you could playfully use it for humans just as well.
I'm not so sure about the original, do they use human terms when referring to animal behavior or the proper terms?
>>81367599
I'm a little on the fence, but I'm agreeing with pastebin anon on this.
>>81369630
It's all very casual dialogue, and besides using "rammeln" for having sex and "halt die Schnauze" (which you could say to a person as well), there isn't much more that specifically references their animal-ness.
I'm thinking I'll probably keep "in heat", since while technically inaccurate, colloquially the meaning is obvious and well understood.
>>81353828
I was worried this page would end up deleted again or even risk a ban, so I'm glad you censored it just to be sure. Also, I'm still amused that dead fetuses bursting out of cats is acceptable enough but that panel crossed the line.
>>81367599
In the English dub of movie the discussion in your pic was translated as
>Did you know that all of the dead brothers...
>Yes. They were all on the prowl after some female in heat.
I don't speak German too well but the German dub's line in the corresponding scene is noticeably longer than "rollig waren", too. I think the comic may have shortened the intended line and caused a mix-up on who was in heat.
>>81370630
That makes more sense. Not sure if Ouash would want to include that line, especially since the speech bubble is a bit small, but it would clear up things a bit.
Ok, so I decided to not leave in references to being in heat after all. I decided it would've been acceptable to do so, but I was satisfied with the way I sort of "talked around it" in each case and by not using it, it avoids potential confusion.
The final CBR is currently uploading and I'll post it once it's done.
