It was made as a last ditch effort to convince the world not to make Hitler's war World War 2.

It obviously didn't work. They intentionally used World War 1 imagery, since to a lot of people World War 1 was an apocalyptic nightmare. Like the idea of another Chernobyl or September 11th, it makes people sober the fuck up when presented with the the very real possibility it is currently the eve of part 2.

The war happened sooner than expected though, so it was released and came more as a conclusion of the present rather than a warning.
Now imagine seeing this, then five years later a single bomb that destroys a whole city is created and used.

And the earlier prototypes of extremely realistic robots that could pass for biological creatures were an amalgamation of animal types. You want to make sure that your baseline prototype can be reconfigured to a variety of skins and sizes, right? So theme prototypes just happen to look like humans. The flat-face allows for easy attachment of various "snout" types, and the hairless body's mean all kinds of different fur could be applied. Assume that normal human bone structure doesn't apply (all joints can reverse and bend as needed) and arms can be made to look like wings.

Everything about Mary being true just makes sense on its own, as discussed.

I think Mary is some kind of robot, magical construct, or otherwise fake person somehow related to Mystana. Like a backup body or an attempted clone or something. She might be related to Poppy's family but only in the sense than all humans are related to each other through Mitochondrial Eve, but not more direct than that. The incredibly low magic potential plus keyhole is too suspicious.

I don't think Morbi was ever serious about making a game. He just had this idea for a fighting game with animals in his head and he did lots of character designs and stuff, and then he decided to make a webcomic out of it.

I think Morbi began thinking of a cool "What if?" for a fighting game and he began making a bunch of cool concepts for it. Many of the Poppy characters came from it. Poppy was the main character, Mary was Poppy's best friend, Petunia ended fights that lasted too long (her black belt powers is a leftover from this), Kit was a enemy boss, Boris was a boss and his lucky star was a gameplay mechanic. I don't believe he was serious in making it a game since I don't think Morbi has any game making or coding experience.

Wild guess: Humans are involved, but as implied by the picture, will never be seen directly. The whole comic is actually set on Earth, but in a really weird way...

Remember how Poppy was originally designed for a video game? The world of Flora was created by a video game company as an MMORPG setting populated by strong-AI NPCs, governed by a council of "Archetype" AIs, one for each order or family or whatever of NPCs. The entire thing is sitting inside a supercomputer server farm somewhere on a future Earth.

This is why there's nothing "outside" the Floran universe, if I'm remembering Morbi's responses to questions correctly: After one of the Archetype AIs went rogue, granted all the lesser AI's free will and permanently altered the way the world worked, the entire project was repurposed to a passive-observation artificial life simulation and never connected to the Internet. Earth's reality, being a substrate, is probably more correctly defined as "below" Flora.

Spacehenge is the place human players would originally have spawned in at, and is no longer functional.

The Specter of Fate is the original leader of the game project trying to fix the world and get his MMO back by manipulating NPCs. He doesn't particularly care for the free will of the Florans, hence the name that implies that all they will have in the end is Fate, as opposed to Free Will.

Headcanon time: Ms. Chort grew up in a orphanage and her puppet hobby first started out as her trying to entertain the other orphans. Since many of her friends kept getting adopted she would make a puppet of them to remember them by. Once she got adopted (or became too old to stay in the orphanage depending on how sad you want this to be) she began making puppets of people so she wouldn't forget them. She make puppets of Petunia and Alvus after attending a town hall meeting, puppet of Kit after she got coronated (Kit later saw her with the puppet during a parade and gave her a HUGE hug), puppet of Mary after she saw her in her nun outfit doing shots at a bar, and even began making puppets of her students and their parents as a way of trying to understand them better so she could do her job much more efficiently.

Since she grew up in not so great circumstances she has an issue with anxiety and she has used her puppets to help cope with this. She uses them to cheer her up after a particularly stressful day, finds creating new puppets calming and helps pass the time, and she still enjoys creating little puppet shows based around current events for herself and her students.

She is trying to find a nice boyfriend but she recently had a horrible experience when a seemingly nice goat ridiculed her after she showed him a puppet in his likeness. This has put her off of dating for awhile.

Spells can be cast. However Morbi has said that any random schmuck can't cast fireball after learning about it ealier that day. To do even the most basic of spells you have to dedicate lots of time studying magic. None of Poppy's enemies so far would be proficient at casting magic so Morbi has had them use Lucky Star powers or brute strength. I expect when the Scepter plot advances and more dangerous foes challenge Poppy we're gonna see more enemies that are dedicated magic users.

Also before you ask Morbi has said that even magicians would know how to take out magic nullifiying enemies like Poppy.
