Sounds good. The vault itself makes for a cool quest that hasn't been played out a thousand times and there's all sorts of nifty Roman history and mythology to draw on for a supernatural angle. Also, the Mediterranean would provide a nice lush background and all sorts of opportunities for hookups with cute locals.

No I just made it up off the top of my head. He was one of the last emperors who brought stability before the crisis of the third century. He was from Syria, and his Grandson in law was a priest of Baal. Could be something like: Severus knew that tough times were a head, so he had all the powerful and magical artifacts rounded up and put away for safe keeping. A little boring, but that's just off the top of my head.

If we're going retro should this be a 40s/50s type deal? I know that's something that gets done a lot in adventure stories but those eras had some awesome aesthetics and there's lots of different antagonist potentials.

Some ideas

>Main character is historian/archaeologist with a focus on the Roman Empire. Kind of a Milo Thatch/Daniel Jackson type. Underweight, underdeveloped, and neurotic as hell. Discovery of location/device/artifact/massive ancient orgy sets him on path of becoming badass dork

>sidekick is an undercover CIA/OSS agent that's planting info and funding expedition for main in order to help smooth the way to their mutual goal. Why he needs to be around for this is unclear. Stick in the mud type that's uncomfortable with all of this due to being a skeptic.

>Third main is a boisterous mercenary planted by KGB/SS/Whoever the West's enemy is this era. Trying to discover why the CIA has such a vested interest in this thing. Loves fighting and fucking and doesn't care how it comes to him.
