Because where I live, state don't give a fuck what church do.
You need to go to the registry office in order for the state to recognise your marriage.
The church could wed you to a potted plant for all they care. It's just "Fill out form here, receive tax benefit over there, thank you and goodbye." Unless you come over with some notice and the whole family, in which case they put on a bit of a show.
