See Chaika, the girl in the picture. She has pale skin and lives in a european inspired world, which would imply she is white, but if a live action version of this anime ever came out she would probably be played by a japanese actress. She's got a definite look but no actual race.

The Homestuck human characters all have pale enough skin for it to be stylised as pure white (and when we see their skin colours in trickster mode it is peach coloured), and straight hair. But they still literally have no race, like Chaika does, even though they have a canonical look. (which is pale skin, average builds, straight hair).

Of course if you look at the background of the authors you can tell what race they are mean to be. Whoever drew Chaika was probably imagining her as a Japanese girl, and Hussie was probably imagining the kids as white. The 'aracial' thing was a way to get out of having a not particularly diverse story. JK Rowling did the same thing with the new Harry Potter play.

Basically I think the generally accepted idea goes kind of like this:

Sex is physical. Usually to do with XX or XY chromosomes, but in rare cases (ie. being intersex) this isn't applicable.

Gender is much less concrete, and is to do with identity. It's more tied up with gender roles and presentation.

Sex and Gender are not the same thing. Most people's sex and gender match up, so the distinction usually doesn't matter, but if you are trans or non binary they don't match.

From what I can tell being trans can be based on several things: say you are a transwoman. You could physically feel like you should have a female body, or you could just strongly identify with the societal role of being a woman, or a mix of the two.

But you should probably ask a trans person because they would know better than me.

Because up until that point genders and gender role did not exist outside he/she. Sex existed because boobs. Gender did not.
