At least Filoni gave us space owls instead of space ravens, they're nowadays the more obscure deathbringer/bad omen thanks to the "wise owl" propaganda.

Nope, she's (hopefully) jumped and used the anti-grav in the saber ring to carry her; another anon speculated that if the spin is fast enough, the heat of the saber could generate sufficient current.

Also, Filoni sees Maul more as foil to Ahsoka: Someone who once believed in the teaching of their order, but went renegade and doesn't associate with it anymore.

Star Wars Aftermath. It's not worth reading it just for that tidbit, which is just a throwaway reference more than anything else.

And for what it is worth it said he was recruited by Fulcrum, not Ahsoka. As it is a codename anyone could have been Fulcrum at that point. Yes, even Snoke.

Why not, Snoke has been everyone else by this point.

>>81127979
I've seen people make use of two scenes to "prove" Hera is horrible. The first is in the B-Wing episode because she refused to let them abort the run even when Phoenix Leader suggested so. The problem is that it turns out even after that failed attempt Phoenix Squad was trying again when it wasn't her call. They were throwing everything they had into helping those miners, even if it meant they had nothing left.

Whether it was actually bad writing in how the episode was framed or whether those miners were somehow crucial to the Rebellion, well, who knows. But within the episode it was never presented as her fault, and in fact the only thing that would have been her fault was not getting them their secret weapon in time. A secret weapon they've failed to use ever again. Apparently Fishy Joe needed the prototype back before they could attempt mass production. He'll probably be done around the time ROTJ occurs.

The second is a more recent episode when they lost a Phoenix pilot whose A-Wing suffered hyperdrive damage. They wanted Hera to specifically shield the pilot with the Ghost. Nevermind that the episode called for another pilot to be lost, with everything else going on they demanded that Hera either was already shielding the A-Wing from behind or suddenly react to it. As it was she needed to be told. As it was a TIE swooped in from behind and took out an A-Wing. People might as well bitch about the run on the Death Star when no one was bothering to help protect their X-Wings from the rear or stop Darth and his goon squad from entering the trench after them in the first place.

I'd rather have it if the eyes would look more permanently bloodshot from the strain/stress on the body from excessive Force manipulation. Would have the benefit that non-humanoids would look a bit more alien if it could be seen, or you'd have to think how physical stress could be presented differently in a species... but then you'd need to show a regular specimen to contrast it.

At any rate some shots of Maul in the teasers for the next episode show that he still has what appear to be the "whites" of his eyes.

This would not be adverse to his actual movie appearance. So now the question is whether Rebels just shows them differently (The Clone Wars version matched his movie look) or whether Inquisitor eyes aren't true "sith eyes", which is possible since they aren't true sith. Or maybe Maul is different by Rebels. At the very least he's not self-identifying as a Sith, while not denying that's what he was. Lies? Manipulation?

Haha, guess we'll find out.

Could be blind outside of the Force, though if that's the case it raises the issue of why he still wouldn't show the ocular corruption (one color change overriding another) or if somehow it collections in the eyes or ...whatever else is happening.

I remember listening to Pablo on a podcast and they asked a question about dark side eyes. He said it's pretty much up to the narrative or aesthetic wanted. Which is why Anakin has them and then doesn't.

It's worth noting that he's based on concept art for the Knights of Ren from The Force Awakens, who haven't shown any of the Sith Eye stuff. So I guess those eyes really were Sith Eyes and not just Dark Side corruption. Or maybe they all hide it. Or maybe it was a conscious decision not to show the same change because they wanted to emphasize that the Sith are gone and these are all new Dark Side dorks.

>it's fun to speculate, meta reason would be "differentiating aesthetic", but I hope there's a better in-story one.
I am completely fine with simply aesthetic reasons, but faggots complain that there always has to be an explanation, and then there's suddenly an official Zelda timeline that makes no sense.
>>

Matt straight up sucks.
>>
>>81129391
I prefer the idea that they can hide it, or that the eyes are a symptom of Dark Side madness, the overwhelming rush of negative emotions that tends to warp their views.

Most senior Sith, like Sidious and Dooku can hide it. I like to think of it as showing the mastery over self, the control over the more negatively influencing, out of control aspects of the Dark Side.

Maul and I believe Vader is meant to have it as per the books, well, that makes sense as they're both a different kind of Sith from Dooku or Sidious. They aren't stately manipulators (though Maul gave it a good run), they're weapons. They embrace the madness, the warped view of the galaxy the Dark Side has thrust on them. Vader especially uses it as a means of clinging to sanity, convinced that everyone betrayed him and that all he's suffered has merely made him stronger, more attuned with the Force than any weak lessons the Jedi ever taught him.

Anyway I always considered the ability to disguise the eyes was a higher level Dark Side ability. The Dark Side is supposed to be quicker, easier, more seductive, like a drug rush. Anakin dove right into the deep end of the pool and it showed.

Of course disguising their Sith eyes was useful for both Sidous and Dooku since they were public figures.
>>
>>81129689
If Kanan is Qui-Gon then Ezra is Obi-Wan, not Ahsoka. Obviously Kanan wants Ezra to complete Ahsoka's training that she abandoned during the Clone Wars.

Ahsoka can then stand there with a look of pure WTF.

Zelda and FF and a couple of other game franchises are just good at reusing the same names/plot elements over and over in just the right amount to deliever their gameplay.

I guess I'm just to bothered by a lack of coherence in the visual and textual side of storytelling, like the aesthetic has to follow the story and not stand out besides? If it's all just meant to look cool with no connection to/in the story it just cheapens the overall thing for me. But this is all highly subjective in what you can accept and what not.
>>
>>81129126
>and also more black.

I think they just fucked up with her and resourced the eyes from the Grand Inquisitor. Mirialans don't have black sclera, whilst Pau'ans do.

>>81129162
Or he's just not that immersed in the dark side. Bear in mind, they weren't trained to be strong.

>>81129313
>Maul in the teasers for the next episode show that he still has what appear to be the "whites" of his eyes.

He's always had that. Same with Vader and Sidious. The dark side just alters the iris and forms a bloodshot rim around them. The Sclera remains the same. Hence; white for most characters and black for the Grand Inky.

Stop right there. He split a god damn force sensitive, project-able Star Map that was created from the KotOR years to find certain force users with a certain single. Think like the shitty blood ID from Dragon Age.

If the mother fucker didn't want to be found he shouldn't have made a god damn FORCE map that exactly knows his position at any time.

And before anyone says it. The based the map to show where Luke is off of the maps in KotOR and even do the same things like their counterparts from the game franchise.

Yeah, it's mentioned in one of the "How it works" or whatever they're called books for the Force Awakens? The map was based off the maps from KotOR which are force sensitive and some can be tuned to a single or group of peoples type of their force output. They basically copy and pasted it and instead of being created from a certain company from KotOR it's now just a ancient Force Relic or some nonsense.

There are smaller ones but here's one I picked up after searching a few seconds. The particular model shown in the movie is based off a certain one in ether the first or second game, I can't remember at this time.

There have been multiple Star Maps in the Star Wars franchise but the movie directly takes its inspiration from KotOR and I believe like the ones from the game, the one in the movies are force sensed too. Why is Kylo such a scrub? He supposedly has been training for a lot of his life and is 25-30.

In his late teens Obi-Wan defeated Maul.
Mid teens Ashoka was taking on holding her own and at least surviving encounters with Grevious.
Kanan was fighting pretty well as a young teen.
Anakin murdered the entire Jedi order at 22.
Luke faced down the two most powerful Sith ever at 23 all while only have trained for a few years.

I wouldn't go that far. We have no knowledge of how long he was at Luke's Temple. And Snoke himself said that Kylo's training was incomplete.

>In his late teens Obi-Wan defeated Maul.
Early 20s, actually. And Qui-gon was one of the best swordsmen in the order at the time. Makes total sense that his apprentice would be a bit above average.

>Mid teens Ashoka was taking on holding her own and at least surviving encounters with Grevious.
She was avoiding him mostly. Those instances pretty much showed that she couldn't take him on one on one.

>Kanan was fighting pretty well as a young teen.
I can't really comment on this. I haven't read the Kanan comics yet.

>Anakin murdered the entire Jedi order at 22.
Most of the order. Give some credit to the Clones. And he was force Jesus anyway. Even by AOTC they regarded how powerful and skilled he was for his age.

>Luke faced down the two most powerful Sith ever at 23 all while only have trained for a few years.

And his training at the time was ridiculously sub par. He didn't get out of that by martial prowess or even knowledge of the force. He got out of it because of Sidious' hubris and Vader's wavering feelings.

>No, he wasn't. He didn't finish Jedi training, and Snoke basically didn't train him at all.

Of course he didn't finish his training with Luke... because he killed Luke's students with his lightsaber skills. The TFA Visual Dictionary confirms this.

Also, Snoke says it's time to COMPLETE his training and refers to Kylo as his greatest apprentice.

Stop this non-sense. Kylo isn't some scrub. He's an incredibly impressive force-user.

They never said the padawans were killed, story wise it makes more sense if they all turned into the knights of Ren. It would explain why Luke wanted to find a Jedi academy since he would want to know how to train people properly.
>>
>>81134592
>because he killed Luke's students with his lightsaber skills
He didn't even know how to build a saber properly. I'm guessing his skills were less then adequate. And he had knights of Ren with him.
>Also, Snoke says it's time to COMPLETE his training and refers to Kylo as his greatest apprentice.
I'm still more inclined to believe that Snoke is just using him rather than really grooming to be his successor or anything. He decides to train him in the end olny out of sheer necessity .
>Stop this non-sense. Kylo isn't some scrub. He's an incredibly impressive force-user
But that's what I'm saying! He is just untrained, and had numerous circumstances against him in duel with Rey.
>>
>>81134954
>He didn't even know how to build a saber properly.

He knows how to build a saber, jackass. He just used an old design with a cracked kyber crystal.

And he alone killed Luke's students. This is fact. He isn't untrained at all. He spent a good while training under Luke and then trained under Snoke.

In his defense there is still grounds for speculation...from certain points of view.

For instance we still don't know when and at what age Kylo Ren betrayed the Jedi Order, so we don't know the extent to which Kylo Ren was trained. We also don't know WHAT Luke was teaching them, for instance it's entirely possible that he skipped a lot of their martial training in favor of raising his students in peace, away from the temptation of conflict that wrecked them the first time (that is an assload of speculation, but at least possible). We also don't know precisely how far Kylo Ren's ... Ren training (for lack of a better word), although he IS said to be the Master of the Knights of Ren.

Anyway yeah there's still a lot of fill in the blanks left and some of what we do know is still a bit up to interpretation. For instance the script says that Han hadn't seen his son as a man until Kylo removed his helmet in front of him. How that does suggest that Ben was taken when he was still relatively young, not yet a man (whatever "man age" is in Star Wars, with it's weird space legalities, wink wink). But that presumption is based on the notion that once Ben was in Luke's keeping Han and Leia still saw him. Visits, holocalls, stuff like that. It's possible, though, that such contact is not done (sort of like the old Jedi Order's prohibition against retaining familiar connections) or maybe Ben himself was so pissed off at being palmed off on his uncle he didn't want to talk to them.

I don't mind that, to an extent, but it's the stuff that IS in the Visual Dictionary and yet is not in the movie. Like the NR and Resistance aren't all buddy buddy, the Resistance can't just call up NR fleets and what help Leia gets is from her few supporters. She has a representative in the movie who was begging for help and not having any luck.

But if you just watch the movie the opening crawl says they're pals and Hux acts like his only reason for destroying the NR isn't revenge for the Empire, no, he just wants to cut off the Resistance from their primary allies in the Senate. And the Senate supposedly hated them!

There is a MAJOR disconnect there. By comparison that woman in Maz's who sold them out is specifically said to be a spy in the Visual Dictionary, but in the movie she looks like she's just collecting the bounty on BB-8. That's something the barely matters. The other stuff? Huge fucking deal.

>>
>>81136215
traditions, ideology, culture, training methods, philosophy.
>>
>>81136215
It's pretty easy
Dark Side user is a broader categoty - anyone who uses dark side, obviously
A sith is a follower of specific traditions and rituals dedicated to destroying the JEdi and taking over the galaxy.
>>
>>81136215
Sith follow a specific code, dark side users just use the dark side.

idk I really like the idea of Kotor and Swtor being its own universe separate from Legends and Nu Canon. Legends is convoluted as all fuck and Nu Canon doesn't need all the baggage Kotor would bring. It being a parallel universe is perfect

I think the reason they are actually handling the canon the way they are is because its a great parallel to Marvel. Instead of having all the stories split between 400 different timelines, only have one coherent timeline with all the stories in it.
>>
>>81136561
>But what are their codes and traditions?

All of that, as of yet, has not been revealed. Much like with the Jedi. All we really know is that of all the dark side users that have existed (Nightsisters, Knights of Ren, ect), the Sith are the most immersed and powerful group to have ever existed.
>>
>>81136561
The biggest thing with the Sith is power for its own sake. They're all about gaining power and doing whatever it takes to get it, up to and including stabbing each other in the back. Sith philosophy is fundamentally selfish.

Contrast to the Nightsisters, who also work with the dark side but aren't really trying to conquer or increase their power and are mostly content to just stay on their planet and practice their ways there (well, until Talzin anyway, but given that she traded recipes with Sidious that may be where she started going a little power hungry)
>>
>>81136215
Think of the Dark Side as any of the big religions on Earth. Dark Side is a small sect within that religion that follows the basic rules, but ultimately makes up their own way to teach to followers. ""#notallmuslims are bad, but the jihadists,"" something like that.
>>
>>81136561
>In the main body of work all I can gloss is they only let two people be in their secret club and like taking things over like any evil-doer would
We don't know the full details of Sith teachings, but it really comes down to just being power-hungry bastards to the greatest extreme. They want power at any cost, to the point that they're terrified of death moreso than normal people because it represents the greatest loss of power and everything they've acquired in the material world. The reason the Rule of Two exists is because the Sith way encourages backstabbing, so when you get more than two people who subscribe to this "I want power for myself, fuck everyone else" way of thinking it gets really messy.
>>
>>81136724

There's quite a bit we know. Sith philosophy is one of absolute domination. This isn't a Dark Side thing, necessarily. Sith are about making huge empires and furthering the spread of the Dark Side via causing as much suffering and despair in the galaxy as they can. What makes them especially heinous is they will not tolerate ANY rival power, not even a group of Light Siders like the Jedi, or even within their own group. They owe allegiance to none save themselves. Other Sith are mere convenience, necessary but ultimately disposable when the time is right.

This is why the Jedi cannot abide the Sith to exist. They seek to corrupt the galaxy and WILL engage in total warfare against the Jedi, so the Jedi have to respond in kind.

We know a bit about the Night Sisters thanks to Ventress (it's arguably that her views of the Night Sisters, especially their powers, is derived from her upbringing as a Jedi and later a Sith assassin/secret apprentice). The Night Sisters use both the Light and the Dark. They ride the edge between them, but are by no means Grey. They can use the Light and do have loyalties and love, reserved only for each other (doesn't seem to be much lost between them and the Night Brothers, though). They use the Dark Side for it's power, but are trained to resist falling too deeply under its seduction. Thus they can use the powers of either but are owe neither side their allegiance. They do, however, heavily favor the Dark Side perhaps because you can't fully escape its influence no matter how strong you think you are.

This seems to be why the Jedi leave the Night Sisters alone. They keep mostly to themselves and aren't interested in creating Witch Empires. However they are also limited to Dathomir due to their reliance on the Waters of Life, brewed by cutting parts off an ancient, Force heavy fish monster. Go figure.

Talking about the Sith like this has me thinking. The Jedi have had a very checked past, at least hinted at, mostly in legends but legends that have a definite grain of truth. Like Yoda talking about how the Jedi and Sith both had ancient kyber-based superweapons in the past.

The Dagoyan Masters also accused the Jedi of having kidnapped Bardontan children in the past. Mace Windu sort of glossed over this but certainly seemed uncomfortable.

I suspect the Jedi did do this, around the same point when they'd become so desperate or lost in their way that they began building and deploying superweapons. I think that the Jedi began desperate enough to abduct Light Side oriented Force using children to indoctrinate because they needed to shore up their numbers against the Sith.

I suspect this is another bit of the Jedi history that has fallen into "legend", basically been sanitized from the official recording of history.

Not really. We just know he's a Vader fanboy. We have no idea what he thinks of the Sith as a whole, just that her worships grandpa. His lightsaber being modeled on that of an ancient Sith (not officially confirmed to be Revan yet) might indicate he admires the Sith as a whole but we don't really know enough to be sure.

It's more open ended, I suppose. Yoda talks about when the Jedi and Sith were vying for control of the galaxy. Weapons (plural) of immense destructive ability, always with massive kybers at their hearts, were used.

There may be insinuation and implications drawn that aren't warranted. however the Jedi of old went total war against the Sith, and we saw what happened the last time the Sith and Jedi did that. They Jedi lost their way.

Anyway after the Sith were believed extinct both the Republic and the Jedi themselves reorganized. The Jedi were no longer a military body and were relegated purely to keeping the peace. This seems to be in reaction to what they became, what it could be argued they had to become, to defeat the Sith.

When you add in the accusations of the Dagoyan Masters, well, the picture painted of the Jedi of old isn't always a pretty one.

Of course the alternate theory is that we never actually saw Deiser grabbed, just that her helmet was left behind. So for all we know she ran, managed to escape, but got lost. Now she doesn't know where her base or her A-Wing is. She'll turn up weeks, maybe months later as the Queen of Atollon, wild and untamed, with a stone knif and bedecked in crude raiments fashioned from native lifeforms she's killed with her bare hands.

I was going to say we'd seen lower level Dark Side users with the "sith eyes" but Savage is so weird. Not a natural Force user, had the Force injected into him via witch magick, trained by Dooku, brainwashed by Talzin, trained (I guess?) by Maul.

So yeah no clue.

I'm not wholeheartedly sure of this. All of the nightsisters are supposedly force sensitive. Is it too outlandish to think that the nightbrothers are as well, and they're simply taught nothing about it? I mean all of them have to had been born from a nightsister at this point, so?

Not all Zabrak, but these aren't quite average Zabrak. They're Dathomirian Zabrak which is...

Oh hell, I don't know how their genetics work. Males look like Maul and Savage, females look like Dathomirian witches.

Other zabrak look more like Sugi and the zabrak members of the Jedi. Another bit of weirdness, Zabrak or just Dathomirian Zabrak seem to grow their horns out as they age. Maul's were pretty long when he was discovered insane, but when Talzin used her powers to restore his mind she also restored his physical appearance back to his TPM self. So maybe they file them down for aesthetic appeal. Like getting a haircut.

Savage says he's not a normal Force user to Maul as the former is dying. He received a massive dose of green witch gas (derived from their Waters of Life which appears to be pure extract of Living Force). This would also account for how wildly bulked up he was afterward if he received a massive dose of life giving Living Force, also how he could soak up blaster fire, but that's speculation/inference.

You raise an interesting question of what happens to Force Sensitive Night Brothers. As far as we know they didn't have any mojo, not even the normal untrained versions like Ezra, Anakin, and Rey demonstrated. Maul had the Force but Sidious kidnapped his early on.

This also raises other questions. If the Night Sisters can create artificial Force users maybe they do it to themselves to ensure all female dathomirians have the mojo. If that's the case, what happens when an artificially created Force user has a child? Is it more likely the child will be Force Sensitive? If Talzin was telling the truth to Mace Windu that she's not a natural Force user was Maul imbued because she was?

If we want to go the Plagueis route it's possible that Maul himself was somehow created, or derived from someone who was created as a Force user, therefore studying such Living Force manipulation would be considered useful. Maybe that's why he was abducted and they just trained him to see how powerful he'd be, then later he became Sidious' apprentice after Sidious ganked his old boss.

Anyway there's some crazy unknowns here, definitely a potential for wackiness.

In all it's one of those issues that doesn't matter too much. For what it's worth I'm sure Obi-Wan called them Zabrak in TCWs when they went to investigate Savage's initial appearance.
>>

>>
>>81143169
Who knows, man. I don't even know if Savage was his biological offspring, which I doubt given how Talzin used him though maybe she cares less because he wasn't a Force user.

The way I always imagined it Savage was very loyal to his brother, which is why he fought to be the one chosen. Later, when fully mind fucked he killed Feral. However Talzin turned his old loyalty to his brother by telling him Maul was his true brother. And in a way they were, at least Night Brothers. As for how Maul saw it, well they say he only just learned Talzin was his mother during the events of Son of Dathomir or thereabouts anyway. This was in the recent interview with Filoni and Witwer regarding the return of the return of Darth Maul.

One of the things I hope they reveal in Episode VIII is that when Rey and Kylo Ren were having their psychic duel Rey inadvertently copied some of Kylo's training.

No, not as an excuse as to how she was able to use the Mind Trick or Force Pull (there's other ways to explain that up to and including having her as Luke Skywalker's daughter who grew up in his temple until for her own safety she was hidden away on another world like he was as a baby). No I mean because Rey will have accidentally tainted herself with some of Snoke's training. In the script when she had bested Kylo there was supposed to be a voiceover of Snoke telling her to give in to the Dark Side and kill Kylo Ren and join him, but for whatever reason they left it out. Apparently Snoke has Yoda's trick of psychic phone calls, and he doesn't need the recipient to be in a temple to do it.

To use the dark side, all you need to do is tap into your fear, anger, hatred, and aggression.

The Sith are a specific dark side order with the following characteristics:

1) They use Jedi weaponry and techniques. There are various religious traditions throughout the galaxy that tap into the Force one way or another, like blind men feeling an elephant. The Sith in particular have some of their roots in the Jedi Order, and use lightsabers and other Jedi methods.

2) They believe in pursuing power for its own sake. This is part of the reason for the Rule of Two. When there are tons of Sith, they will start fighting each other over who gets to be the top dog. Darth Bane wiped them out and formed the Rule of Two, one master who's on top, and one apprentice trying to get good enough to take his place. This way the Sith Order gets stronger with each generation.

3) According to Yoda in "Sacrifice", they are convinced that the material world is all there is and all that matters, and that life after death is impossible.

4) The goal of the Sith, ultimately, is to cheat death. This feeds back into the belief that life after death is impossible. Power is pursued as an end in itself, but of course if you die you lose all your power, so you want immortality. If this is achieved, the Rule of Two will no longer be necessary, since if you can't die you don't need a successor.

These traits make them very different from other dark side groups such as the Nightsisters, who do not use Jedi techniques or weapons, are fanatically loyal to their sisterhood ideal, indulge in full-on magic, and seem to mainly have a goal of simply surviving in their little Dathomir enclave.

The difference between the Sith and general dark side users becomes a lot easier to understand once you realize that the Jedi are not typical of Force using traditions, they're just dominant.

Hm. Puts me in mind of something I'd been thinking about but hadn't mentioned in a thread.

Namely that NOBODY dies on Malachor and Ezra doesn't fall to the Dark Side. Just when the usual suspects start bitching in the thread the Jedi get back to the Rebel base on Atallon. Walking down the ramp of their ship, still patting themselves on the back, Kanan mentions it's weird that nobody is there to greet them. Before Ezra can say his customary, "Something is coming" - BOOM - Kanan drops. Stormtroopers pour out of every makeshift structure. Imperial ships descend from orbit. Tarkin walks out of a shuttle and says something like, "THIS is how you win a war."

Turns out the person selling out their locations to the Empire sold them out again. Shock, right? The base was taken while they were fucking around on Malachor and the Empire was just waiting for them.

TO BE CONTINUED

I think if Filoni did something like that, left us in that kind of situation, no hint how the hell they get out of this, the hype train would have suitably derailed, flipping over several times in midair, and then hit the track again with twice the speed of before.

Tech limitations and other mistakes.

And it STILL looks better than TFA, because for all his faults Lucas had a knack for composing beautiful, memorable, impactful shots.

Visuals in a movie are part aesthetic, part technology. Abrams has a very weak grasp of the aesthetics, just imitating the same things everybody else is doing.
>>
>>81150981
Honestly yeah. Just watched TFA for the first time and the some of the biggest problems were technical ones. They didn't understand the lighting of Star Wars. They didn't understand the editing of Star Wars.

For fucks say they used dissolves instead of wipes!
>>
I think I'm getting too hype for the upcoming episodes.
>>
>>81150981
Lucas stole that whole scene from Battleship Potempkin! Obviously it is therefore open season on as much as we can cut and paste from A New Hope!
>>
>>81151142

I WISH TFA would have done cut and paste jobs with shots from A New Hope.

They lifted the plot and left all the gorgeous visuals behind. That's like holding up a store, opening the cash register, dumping the cash on the ground, and running out with the register tucked under your arm. Sure it's a valuable and basically functional piece of machinery, but you still took the wrong thing, dipshit.
>>
>>81151061
He used pre-lap voice over a lot too, which is bizarre not only because it's not something used in Star Wars, but he doesn't understand how it's supposed to work. The voice over is supposed to bridge to the next scene by juxtaposing the voice over from the next scene with the visual from the previous scene. There's supposed to be a reason you see that image with that voice over. Abrams just seems to do it at random, and a few times it was jarring and didn't really connect.
>>
>>81151262
>pre-lap voice
Called a J-cut.

The opposite, where the old audio remains while a new image comes on is an L-cut.
>>
>>81135422

>>
>>81151260
They kind of did in places. Someone posted a webm of the TIE fighter shoot-out scene in the Falcon's escape from the Death Star side-by-side with Rey and Finn's fight to escape Jakku.

There's also supposedly one in that scene where Rey's maneuver at the end that lets Finn shoot the last TIE she maneuvers the controls similar to how Anakin did during his pod race to take the lead against Sebulba. There's probably tons more.
>>
>>81151317
That's within a scene, though, and that's referring to an editing technique rather than a narrative device.
>>
>>81151262
You mean like Finn helping the Crimson Corsair load his ship while we hear the people on Hosnian Prime freak out? That was odd and the way Finn suddenly looks up, since he couldn't have any hint of the Starkiller blast from space, suggests he's using the Force or some shit. Totally awkward.

Here's the beast entrances from AOTC. I'm still amazed at how TFA managed to fuck up its beasts scene with the Rathtars.
>>
>>81151391

I've seen the webm you're talking about. The problem is that the way the landscape is whipping by the Falcon the whole time, it gets distracting, because you have this movement that your eye keeps getting drawn back to, while the ANH TIE shootout happened against a static starfield that let you concentrate on the action.

If the Falcon Drift maneuver is supposed to be an homage to "Skywalker's been forced onto the service ramp!" then I'm not really seeing it. One of the things that helps the service ramp bit is that it moves slower, overall. Take a look for yourself: https://youtu.be/FM5TjmuvTFk?t=6m55s

Sorry it's such a shitty video that seems to cut off about a third of the right side of the screen; I couldn't find a better one. The point is: the whole bit is spread out enough that you can process what's going on and maybe even feel nervous for Anakin, like "how's he going to get out of this?" Then it lets you anticipate what's going to happen as he flips the switch and starts to glide in, leading to that great little understated shot of the pod whizzing in right out of the blue, Sebulba's "huh?" reaction, and BAM, he's in.

Compare to the drift scene here, which lasts about 5 seconds: https://youtu.be/cpLxD_q5eDc

There's just no time to process it or feel anything other than "WOW DRIFT". By the time you've registered what's happening, it's over. There's no build-up, we're just suddenly doing this now, oops it's done, bye.

>>81151649
They wasted so much time on those fucking critters when they should have cut them and left in Dooku's trial where the grievances of the CIS are shoved in Padme's face. Instead they cut to some ridiculous James Bond villain shit. Way to set the tone for the CIS which we're eventually supposed to believe actually had a point which Padme had come to view by Episode III.
>>
>>81151694
There are direct reproductions and then there homages and allusions. The "drift" seems to be the latter. It's not so much the Falcon as Rey's maneuvers on controls during.

Not entirely sure why you're talking about the reactions the scenes illicit, though.

Not sure if they intentionally took queues from Anakin's scene but given the way Rey and Finn talk about it, amazed how well their actions line up, is the earliest suggestion that one of them has the Force. Reflexes, insight, subconscious guidance, etc.
>>
>>81151713
>They wasted so much time on those fucking critters when they should have cut them and left in Dooku's trial where the grievances of the CIS are shoved in Padme's face
I would've liked that too, but you just know people would be bitching about how many "talking scenes" the movie has. That's why Lucas cut the scene to begin with, the movie's already pretty heavy on exposition (and even with cuts it's still the longest SW movie)
>>
>>81151713
>Way to set the tone for the CIS which we're eventually supposed to believe actually had a point which Padme had come to view by Episode III.
To be fair, we already know the guys behind the execution are douchebags and that never changes. It also doesn't really change the point Padme comes to realize, that the Republic is actually pretty fucked and they let Palpatine fuck it even further.

I still love the Nexu's entrance. Love it.

First monster comes in, does what it's supposed to. Second monster comes in, gets zapped, does what it's supposed to. Third monster comes in, gets zapped, fucking EATS THE GUY.

Not only do the entrances quickly give each monster a sense of personality, the Nexu's entrance punctuates it all with a bit of grim comedy that's entirely the sort of thing you'd expect from a pulp story.

They're not just wandering hazards like some video game monster, they're actually characters in the scene in their own right. The arena battle was incredible when it was just the monsters and the victims. Of course, it becomes a massive stagnant clusterfuck once the Jedi and the droids show up, but until then it's one of the best parts of the movie that isn't part of Obi-Wan's investigation.
>>
>>81151713
The Arena scene is fine

What should have been cut is the factory sequence
>>
>>81151791

I'm just saying the drift is very poorly handled compared to the podrace service ramp.

JJ generally rushes through everything throughout TFA, but comparing the drift to the service ramp is a good example of why it's a problem when you don't give the audience enough time to breathe and process what they're seeing.

The factory scene needed a rather large trim, but didn't need to be cut completely.

The arena fight after the Jedi and the droids show up also needed a lot of trimming.

Both parts are absolutely gluttonous in the amount of film they take up, and it hurts the movie. I always end up checking the time around the point where Sarrissa Jeng does her "HAAAAAAA!" bit, because god this part of the movie just keeps going on forever.
>>
>>81151882
JJ only has one speed which is full speed ahead. Consider the end of the movie when the trip from Resistance Base to where Luke is in exile apparently takes about five seconds. Sure they have lightspeed but that's fucking ridiculous.

Also amusing is - SOMEHOW - Poe and his squadrons are just chilling in hyperspace until the very second they get the go ahead. Apparently there is a hyperspace "hovermode". Who knew?
>>
>>81151849
>Third monster comes in, gets zapped, fucking EATS THE GUY.
I love how it's business as usual for them. They watched their buddy get eaten but two more still jump into the arena to take over. There's no "oh shit they got St'ev'e'n!" but instead there's a quick "welp guess we need to do his job for him now"
>>
>>81151920
Now THAT is a hairstyle.
>>
>>81151861
>What should have been cut is the factory sequence
Kind of agree with this. Lucas only put it in there because he thought the pacing was slow and audiences would get bored without an action scene, but the scene isn't very good and doesn't really serve any purpose in the story. You could have them enter the catacombs and then get surrounded by Jango and destroyers (which IIRC is exactly how it happens in the shooting script) without going to the factory at all and you don't really lose anything.

Though I guess the Threepio head-swapping antics have a minor benefit of showing what the two droids are doing this whole time, since otherwise they just kind of disappear from the third act.

How many loops would they have to do in the time it took for them to shut down the shields? That's crazy. It'd make more sense to find a local uninhabited system to park in, then make a short range jump when you get the call.

>>
>>81152186
Are you sure? Do they have any idea what effect draining a sun will have on local gravity? Shit could have caused a ripple that ripped them out of hyperspace akin to hitting a brick wall and killed the lot of them.

Not like it was going to happen since that'd be a random and messy plot twist, but still it's always important to consider the ramifications on bullshit technology on the local fantasy physics.

No, it's cool, all the energy Starkiller Base absorbed from that star was recycled into a much smaller planet-sized star which is now really fucking dense thanks to having all of its matter compressed into a tiny size!
>>
>>81152590
That's actually the funny thing about the whole Starkiller Base weapon. In order to destroy an enemy system they have to sacrifice a system of their own. Now this in itself isn't a huge problem (barring issues with potentially needing to find an area that has a clear line of fire with it's target) because the galaxy is no doubt full of systems that are otherwise without population or mineral exploitation.

The problem comes from disrupting gravity in the local area and sending all those planets flying off who knows where, and it just gets worse each time you use the weapon. It may not matter in a year or 100 years but eventually one of those planets that flew off is going to be a huge issue for local hyperspace travel and most likely will hit something you do care about in the fullness of time.
>>
>>81152618
>If your star is killed, we'll replace it with one of equal or lesser value absolutely free!

>>81152618
Issues like that bug me a bit less now that they've finally admitted physics in Star Wars is just strange. I mean it was always heavy on the fantasy and ultra light on the scifi so no big surprise.

Before that I figure the "small star" would probably be handwaved as planet's residual magnetic field or something left over from the containment momentarily holding the explosion in check. When this dissipates enough the energy will finally disperse.
