Its vague. Max is kind in some weird pocket dimension between continuity and episodic shenanigans. He's the only character who has physically aged over the years (besides the triplets, but they deaged back to being clones). Roxanne is sometimes with him, sometimes she's not. In the christmas special he had a new girl, but the weird thing was she was voiced by the same girl who voiced Roxanne so I don't know what the fuck is going on.

Max is only really guilty of not telling Goofy about the concert and even then it wasn't that bad, and Goofy just didn't think about asking Max about what he wanted to do until later.

The Principal blew everything out of proportion.

There was Pete, but he wanted Goofy to come around to his style of parenting, where while PJ respected him, it felt like he was nowhere near as close to his dad as Max was to Goofy after he gained control of the map and during the concert.

I just always thought it took place before he went off to college. Like, A Goofy Movie doesn't show Max graduating. It was probably the summer after his Sophmore or Junior year, and he'd return to school after the Summer, now dating Roxanne, and working parttime at the House of Mouse. Eventually, He and Roxanne split before college, and he finds a new girl for himself.

I'd be pissed too if my father forced me to go on a vacation with him right out of the blue after coming home from school, no pre-warning, reason, or even consent.

ESPECIALLY if I were that close to getting laid.

Technically speaking, as bratty as Max could be at times, he really didn't do anything wrong. It was his dad that did. Yeah he changed the map but you know he never asked or was asked to go on the damn trip.

The worst you can say for Max is that he didn't try explaining the situation in the first place, maybe even asking his dad for help, instead of telling an outrageous lie he then had to live up to. But he's a kid; he's bound to fuck up like that.

Goofy let his own insecurities screw with his relationship with his son and sprung an INSANELY long cross-country trip on him. Who the fuck thinks a thirteen year-old wants to sit in a car and drive 4,000 miles? Yes, I know he's Goofy, but he shouldn't be INSANE...

I think the reason why Goofy and Max were the way they were was because the wife/mother died sometime prior to the film. Goofy sank into depression and kept trying to find ways of easing it, and Max took his sadness and general insecurities out on him.

That's the reason why I can't really watch the film again. Those feels are too much for me.

Not to infringe on this projection cause it sounds really personal, but he's been raising Max alone since he was a lot younger, and they had a better relationship in Goof Troop. Max even seemed to admire his dad a lot more then.

I think it's just he got older, moodier, and Goofy didn't get the memo and still treated him like a 10 year old which made the communication more strained.

If the movies are the same timeline as Goof Troop then Max's Mother/Goofy's wife had been dead for a good while.

I'm not saying that it doesn't effect them every now and then but I don't think it's that's much of a factor in their behavior in the movie.

Max was a teenager and they're a hurricane of emotions. He was in that period where "Man my parents are lame! Now how can I get popular/get this girl to notice me?" And from a point it's easy to see how he could see Goofy as embarrassing since the man is a natural Klutz.

On the other hand, Goofy still treated Max like he was younger than he actually is and ended up being worried that he and Max would fall out and never be close again. The Principal's call just amplified those worries.

So he thought "I know! Max and I will go on a trip and we'll bond again!" only he did it without discussing it with him and instantly assumed that Max would enjoy all the places he went to as a kid.

Max's mom/goofy's wife pasted away during childbirth. This is way you never see pictures of her, goofy and Max as a baby. It also helps to believe that she gave birth around the time goofy was in his last year of college. Tragedy struck and goofy is left with only is new son. So he quit college to raise max as a single parent.
