I agree with the second part of your post, but not with your premise. Kylo having flaws isn't "sabotage" or removing him of having a "villain status." Instead, his inner conflict is what makes him more fascinating to me. I don't need my villains to be 100% menacing. Villains are antagonists, that's the only condition they have to fulfil.

The idea is that they HAD to make him like he wasn't a straight up villain. This has nothing to do with degree of menace. This has to do with making you question whether he truly IS a villain. That's what lets you think maybe he can be converted within the movie hew as introduced without having to go the longer route with Vader, who himself himself only started showing signs at the end of ESB and his villainy was starting to crack around the edges at several points in ROTJ. But that's how you treat someone who is established as a true villain. Kylo Ren was set up as a kind of Schrödinger's villain by the mid movie where he might or might not be a true villain depending on how much sympathy you feel or how unstable you feel he is. This is, at least, what was attempted to make Han's try at redeeming Ben make sense. It/s why he didn't just keep his mask on the entire movie as some anon's wish they did. He had to be revealed as human, appear vulnerable. You had to see him react as Rey pushed his button about Vader after turning his own mind link against him, etc etc

I really like the TFA saber duels. There was a certain weightiness to them and there was a better impression that the combatants were aiming to kill, as opposed to say, prequel dancing and "Old man and crippled cyborg awkwardly shuffle about".I still love all the OT and PT duels. Bespin is fantastic.

I agree with your point, just not with your wording. To me, it wasn't a question of whether he would become a villain of a hero. He was clearly a villain. It wasn't like when Luke was getting seduced; it was like an Anakin post-Episode III; he had already fallen. I felt he had more similarities with Vader in Jedi, in the brisk of coming back. Not really. I mean in the duel between Maul, Obi-wan, and Qui-gon, the first portion just feels incredibly floaty. It's only when Obi-wan and Maul are going at it alone that they feel like they're going for kill strikes for most of the swings.

I rather liked the Duel between Anakin and Obi-wan because it was at least consistently fast enough, whereas whenever Dooku's onscreen there's some conspicuously slow movements, or when Sidious has his duel although I don't really mind that one just because it's funny.

Well I don't think it's a matter of being both a villain and a hero at the same time since Kylo Ren didn't do anything heroic. It was more about being a villain, because he most certain did villainous things, while at the same time seeming like someone who was merely duped. It's the duality that's important. The closest he came to revealing a better nature was mentioning his continuing struggle against the Light within him. This set him up as someone whose heart just wasn't in it, whose good side couldn't be said to be dead as you could about Vader pre-ESB's revelation to Luke.

They built on this with the notion that he was corrupted, seduced. That this isn't who Ben truly is, or who he truly wants to be inside.

The interesting thing is what did he really mean on the bridge when talking to Han? Was he really wavering and about to join them? Did the sun being snuffed out, covering them both in shadow seem like a sign to him that he had to remain in darkness?

I'm not sure. I never read the script, but it has some insights like it does say that he believes Han when told that Snoke is using him for his power and will ultimately destroy him when his usefulness is over.

Whether that tidbit is canon or not, I've got no clue. I haven't read the novelization either to see if they even carried it into the book.

At most the visual dictionary talks about this as how Ben earned his name Kylo Ren, but I'm personal cautious with information like this. Kylo Ren's past, like Rey's, is still clouded within the movies and the production staff are fully capable of lying if they plan some revelatory twist like, "Luke, I am your father."

The great thing about Kylo is he is already embracing the Dark Side.

In the prequels we had Anakin be a whiny bitch about stuff, but he kept having to hold himself back. Then I felt we missed out on his transition to becoming more stoic, more of the Vader we know from the originals.

Kylo is a whiny brat, but he has absolutely no problem smashing things and nobody is going to tell him he can't. We also have an opportunity to see him grow as a character.

Vader was corrupted by Sidious and the Dark Side twisted everything up inside him, inverted the man he was into a monster, but even redeeming at the end didn't erase what he'd done. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Even after saving his son and killing the Emperor Anakins' legacy as Vader lives on still, now worshiped by Kylo Ren if not the rest of the Knights of Ren and the First Order itself.

In order to die he'd have to be able to let go, shut down who he is inside, and he can't. So yeah despite the damage to his suit the big reason he died on the Death Star is that he was finally willing to let himself go. Which, coincidentally yet totally not, is one of the key steps in becoming a Force Ghost. Acceptance and letting go. There's more to it than that but it's a big one and the real reason the Sith can never do it. They will cling desperately to their lives, clawing for every last second even as they die.

Basically he doesn't feel like a cripple when his armor is sealed. He feels whole again. His anger and hate give him drive and focus.

All he cares about is bringing order and security to the galaxy, even if he has to do so by stepping over piles of corpses.

When Luke rejects what he is, is suitably horrified by it that he'd attempt suicide by falling down the Bespin shaft, who he is begins to crack and weaken. He can't even muster the anger to murder someone after the Falcon, which Piett swore was sabotaged, jumps away. It's the beginning of the end for him and it only gets worse.

He almost literally had nothing other than what he kept on him. Then he finds out he has a son. And thus, the more Sith like urges spark in him. He starts to desire power. Power other than the Force. Power over any and all, and all for himself instead of for the sake of order.

Adding more to this, they also say "If Luke couldn't stop him how could I?" implying that he actually was with Luke for a while. I also think it's possible that Snoke was one of the people Leia saved from Alderaan in her comic. It would explain how that one guy on Jakku knows Ben too, because him and Snoke probably taught him how to be a prince of Alderaan. Here's what I think happened:

>Leia sends him to wherever new Alderaan is so he can train to be a prince of Alderaan
>Ben is trained by the guy from the beginning of TFA and Snoke

To me the implication was that Han and Leia should've been there for Ben as parents instead of just shipping him off the Jedi Boarding School and making him Luke's problem. It could be that Ben was resentful of this and that made him easier for Snoke to manipulate (however the hell Snoke got his mitts on him in the first place). Leia also says that Ben needed his father, and I think Snoke ended up becoming the parental figure Ben felt he needed because Han and Leia weren't really there for him.

Anyway I agree with you in principal. VII's greatest sin wasn't being such a rehash of IV, it was in failing to properly flesh out it's setting. We don't know how big the FO is, we know absolutely nothing about the NR to know if losing Hosnian Prime truly killed it, and we have no real idea on the disposition of the Resistance beyond they never bothered to amass even the kind of ragtag fleets the Rebel Alliance had. It's all very nebulous and hinted at but never really defined, plus the NR backing up the Resistance isn't supported at all by the TFA periphery material. It doesn't help that VII also left out several key backstories as completely mysterious to the point that if you actually remove all the plot points it jacked from ANH there isn't much of the movie left and what is there doesn't really do all that much.

Hopefully VIII can do a better job establishing events in the galaxy. Like people said, as flawed as the prequels are it wasn't a bad setting. Hate the boring politics? That's fine, but there's still stuff to appreciate. A lot of people like the planets, the ships, the droids, the technology, the clones, and the big ass battles. So really even if the Sequels do mess up at the very least on /co/ we're used to having things redeemed by the shows, as long as they have the right people working on them.
