Mother? Where are you?

That scene didn't get me at all when I was a kid. I was more pissed off about the "goofy goober" thing popping out of nowhere in the movie, pretending to be a really meaningful thing in the spongebob universe, to care about it.

>>80976007
They do have their spots of bad writing, but overall enjoyable. Though one thing bothers me, in Balto 2 Balto himself was still being teased by other dogs. And his daughter was unwanted by the humans because "wolf-dog discrimination."
If being town hero and offspring of town hero is not enough, why bother saving them in Balto 1?

Everything after 2:00 gets me every time, without fail.
>I'll let you in on a little secret, Detweiller. Every adult you've ever known was a kid at sometime in his life. You think we don't remember summer vacation; ridin' bikes down by the creek, catching poliwogs in a jar, camping out under the stars? Well, you're wrong! Some days, I sit there in my office, looking out at you kids on the playground and I think, "They don't know how good they've got it. In a few years, they're all going to be grownups, like me, and all those good times will just be memories for them, too". So go ahead, put a whoopie-cushion in my chair, cover my carpet with fake vomit, make fun of my "big, saggy butt", but don't you ever say I don't care about summer vacation, 'cause those memories are the last part of childhood I got left.
Also not a movie, but Jesus Christ, this:

>>80978095
I mentioned this in another Recess thread, but I always got downhearted about this scene because the principal always reminded me of my elementary school's awesome principal visually. He was this really laid back guy who brought his pet iguana to school to keep him company in his office and would always go out of his way to drop in on classes and ask how the kids were doing while talking to every teacher like he was catching up with a lifelong friend. He seemed to know everyone in the school so well it was like he was family. On the last day of fifth grade, he stopped me in the hallway (I was always the last to get picked up in in the carpool line) and told me he'd enjoyed having me around, then gave me a life-size Jar Jar Binks standee because he knew my friends and I love Star Wars and the movie had just come out a few weeks earlier.
He looked me up a few months back and told me he was proud of me for keeping up with my art and raising a family.

TV was brutal with it.
A lot, A LOT of movies, tv shows, cartoons, the mom is dead and when I was younger and the wounds were fresh (between age 7 - 10) the mention of a dead mother would just break me down and it would all replay in my head. It doesn't have that effect on me anymore, but the early days were rough

I had completely repressed thisThe scene where he then gets upset at her. ;_; fuuuuuu
this may sound kind of weird, but the fight scene between master shifu and tai lung in the movie Kung Fu Panda always gets me choked up.
That part where he says, "Everything I ever did, I did to make you proud!" got a tear from my eye.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltbzLZHIK4I
>>80974802
Between this and the scene where Andy was playing with Bonnie before the credits I was holding in tears at the theater.
>>80982446
I mean, I know I'm supposed to be rootin' for Po, but Tai Lung just kinda got to me, ya know? He was stronger, faster, smarter, the best student, and he still got fucked. Then some fatass panda who'd been training for 2 weeks comes along and kicks his ass!
What kind of bullshit is that?
>Tarzan...
>Kerchak, forgive me.
>No, forgive me... For not understanding... That you have always been one of us... Our family will look to you now...
>No... Kerchak...
>Take care of them... My son... Take care of them...
>>80982502
>>80982446
The reason Tai Lung was never chosen is proven at the very end when Po and Tai Lung have gotten a good look at the Dragon Scroll. It takes Po a while, but he figures out that the scroll isn't blank, it's a reflection of himself. He realizes that there is no secret ingredient. When Tai Lung looks at it, even after Po explains it, he doesn't understand. Oogway knew that Tai Lung was so prideful that he wouldn't have been open to the Dragon Scroll and that upon seeing what was inside, he likely wouldn't gone on a rampage anyway. The real tragedy here isn't that it took Po less time to become a master than it did Tai Lung, who worked at it his whole life; it's that Shifu was so proud of Tai Lung's accomplishments that he forgot to teach him to be humble and open-minded, which ultimately made Tai Lung unworthy of the Dragon Scroll's wisdom.
>>80982776
*would've gone on a rampage anyway.
>>80982776
go fuck yourself, panda shill.
>>80975065
The scene where he's reading her book near the end always makes me cry more. Like a baby every time.
>>80974841
I don't know why but that part in that one movie when they all had to say goodbye to Chomper ALWAYS made me cry when I was little.
>>80982776
That's fine, but if the scroll didn't imbue anyone with any extra skills then it just makes the fact that amateur Po defeated one of the best warriors in existence all the more unbelievable.
Just because he realized he had to 'believe in himself'? Puhleeze.
>>80983016
I can never watch Up without thinking of that little girl that got cancer and went blind and the mom described the entire movie to her
>>80980418
I can think of another show like that.
>>80982630
There is no need to be upset
>>80983180
I can probably come up with a few reasons. One, Tai Lung wasn't taking Po that seriously at first. He's a fat panda, so he doesn't see Po as a threat. Two, at first, he was more focused on getting the scroll than he was on actually fighting Po, and once he found out the truth of the scroll, he lost all composure and was blinded by anger and frustration, resulting in his fighting to become sloppy and unfocused as well as giving Po an edge. In both cases, he wasn't using his full potential, but had Tai Lung treated Po as a legitimate threat as well as maintain composure throughout the battle, the fight might've been a bit more even. Three, Po is shown to be a fast learner. He figured out the Wuxi Finger Hold just by watching Shifu do it once, so it's not unreasonable to say that Po had the potential in him all along but just needed the right method to bring it out, a point which is supported by the following movies in terms of inner peace and mastering chi. Four, Tai Lung's most powerful move was the nerve strikes, which, as established by Mantis when trying to use acupuncture on Po earlier in the film, aren't that effective on Po due to how fat he is.

>>80980352
That fucking episode man ;_;
>>80970981
This episode is so overrated. People claim it's so grandiose, but IMO the episode is just shitty. We're supposed to care that the bunny chose to date a bad boy who...shocker is BAD? Fuck her.
Also the biggest problem with the episode? The cat female character. She was a cunt. She insults Muriel and Eustace who offer her free food and a room to sleep in. She trashes them so badly that she makes Eustace act sensitive to his offended wife. That's how bad she was.
And her treatment of Courage? Was even worse. So why should he even give a fuck about her ills? To hell with her. If people treat you horribly? You should let them rot. In the case of the female cat? Muriel and Eustace would be well within their rights to kick her out to the streets for being a bitch.

I just realized: Mulan, being the only girl there, was probably the only one who ever played with dolls. The little girl who lost her doll and her life could have been Mulan if she had been born later. Mulan was probably the only one who could have truly connected with that little girl's sense of terror and powerlessness because she's been "just a girl".

I used to be like you. I've only ever cried reading 1 book, and never cried during movies. But at some point I broke (I guess). I think the scene of Interstellar where Matthew McConaughey watches all the videos his kids send to him just resonated with me. Since then I tear up or cry at so many movies I wouldn't have before (Up beginning, Kaguya, WALL-E, etc).
Well, it didn't make me cry, just felt sad.
Seeing the nastiest character on the verge of tears, you'd thing it'd be satisfying to see them like that. Yet, I felt bad.

>TFW My mother was an abusive bitch who routinely put me down after my dad died
>TFW Watched her drink the bottle and eventually had to give me up when I was 10
>TFW She eventually was taken to the hospital when I was 16 as she was on the descending slope of her life
>TFW She called me to come to her hospice stay, begged me to forgive her and how she was so sorry for everything (she wasn't religious)
>TFWI made her get out of her hospice bed, on her hands and knees, and kiss my feet
>TFWI spat in her face and simply laughed, and left her on the floor for 3 hours before someone came by to check on her
>TFWShe died a few days later, sobbing the meanwhile and simply repeating my name over and over
Death scenes of mothers don't necessarily get to me. It's when you see a good mom doing everything she can to help her children is what makes me incredibly upset.

It's only slightly related to /co/, but it made me tear up and cry a good amount the first time I saw it;TWDS2 was such a cluster fuck, but despite that I kept playing to the end and obviously chose to save my bro, but the speech he gives you to stay at Wellington...
>You'll meet people...

Something about that selflessness, everything you went through together the last two seasons. The man took a beating and got maimed for you, and now he's willing to give up everything for your safety. And despite the fact he was begging me to go in, I still had to choose to stay with him.

My grandfather is getting up there and going through some hard times right now all the while still giving me constant fucking shit. I said some really, REALLY bad things to him a few days ago and he stopped screaming and putting me down and just stared at the television with dead eyes and when I followed up before leaving the room he didn't scream or even turn around to look at me. Just kept watching the TV with those sad eyes. It's the only time I've ever actually seen anything but hate and anger from him since his brother died. I felt like shit even though I am still living there. That faded the next morning when the screaming arguments started over again.

You never heard? It was the wish of a young girl dying from cancer to see Up. However, she wouldn't have been able to live long enough to see it in theaters. Thanks to some connections, news of this reached the heads of Pixar who had a copy of the movie flown out to the little girl's home before it was released in theaters. They played the movie just for the girl and her parents, but the pain the girl was going through was so much that her eyes were closed for most of the film, so her mother described what was happening. The little girl died a few hours later. What's more, Pixar didn't make a big deal of this and even did it in secret. They weren't trying to look good for the public, they just wanted to grant a dying girl's wish.

It is because when people write, if they go for comedy, inspiring or you know, just really proper great and fantastic 'feel good' writing.
It's because it's written by the people who have seen the very worst of life, they have been beaten and broken and gotten back up every time.
It's why most of the best comedians are tortured souls on the inside.
They know the true value of what it can mean to be happy and what it is to not be, and once you've felt that feeling, why would you ever want anyone else to feel that way? So you do everything to make sure people don't.
You want them to feel, you want them to be reminded that everything is okay, that people are loved that it's okay when things are hard, just as long as you are happy...
So when you want to do that, you write.
Jesus, now my screen is blurry thinking about all that.

In the 1950s and 1960s, when the US was doing it's nuclear-sharing program with European states under NATO, the official NATO doctrine was to pre-delegate authority for commanders in West Germany to use nuclear weapons under their direct jurisdiction. These nuclear weapons units were headed by no more than a Lieutenant, in most cases.
In West Germany in particular the doctrine was focused on rapid deployment of nuclear arms against a Soviet invasion. What this means is that instead of inside a hardened silo or bunker, nuclear weapons were kept in unsecured wooden structures on West German air bases, with maybe one or two Americans guarding over them. Sometimes they'd have a sidearm on them, sometimes they wouldn't.
>>81011059

I don't know, this kind of shit makes me optimistic. Not the "unsecured Nuclear weapons" because holy shit.
But that there were all these times where some schmuck literally had his hand over the button. And they decided, "no, I don't think so." Fuck, wasn't there a Russian officer in charge of Russia's real life Dr. Strangelove system when the system fucked up and it seemed like the Americans had launched missiles? And he decides to double check and ends up not starting the end of the world because it turns out people really don't want that to happen.

That happened more than once. Which is really kinda optimistic, I agree. But the really scary thing about pre-delegation was that the dude in charge of the tactical nukes didn't need to justify anything before launching. Zero oversight.
And now, back to the spoopy.

I always saw this movie as a great antidrugs film.
I couldn't stop seeing this couple as a subtle mascarade to a younger couple getting their shit on their first apartment. You see when the male gets his alucinations about being a war boy and having adventures in a fun way, and you see the female alucinations which are very groovy and shit. Also, we have the phone call they made to their son, who is laughing at the moment he's talking to them, thing that shoulnd't really surprise us or worry us but his dad sounds too worried about it, like if something were out of place.
Also the realistic house wreck there is after the big boom looked very yonkiish house.
Maybe I'm biased because I saw this movie stoned as fuck and in a really bad moment in my life, but after I saw it again I couldn't get my mind after this theory.
>>80986736

That's the point. The writer of the original story was working through the guilt he had for playing a part in his sister's death. Here's an article that gives a bit more detail:

I don't know why, but for the longest time I was against this movie when it was still on the way to theatres. Something just didn't click with me. Then I did see it a few years later, and found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would.
>>81005224
>>81001372
What's sadder is how they keep milking the damned thing. I found the first film quite good. Yet they're practically turning it into the new Land Before time with all these sequels that just don't feel like they have nearly the same heart.
>>81013489
Maybe you're confusing it with Barefoot Gen, which had two brothers. The story in Grave of the Fireflies was based on the writer's experiences with his baby sister who died from malnutrition. Look up Akiyuki Nosaka and Keiko.
It's pretty telling how the movie ends withthe writer's self-insert character dying. In real life, he got to live many decades more and continue being tormented by the guilt. But in his idealized re-telling of the events, he felt he'd failed his young sister so badly that he would've deserved to die.

More kids shows need to actually do this. Sesame Street did it because it understood the importance of teaching kids about this stuff early, so its a little easier for them later in life when they inevitably deal with it. A lot of kids movies pull the "oh but hes not really dead!" at the end, which while a lovely ending for kids movies, kind of ruins the impact. People die, kids need to know this happens, a lot of parents probably don't have the balls to sit down and discuss this with their kids (like sex) so if they have to learn from tv shows, they should cover important things, like dying.
>>80971001
Newfag.
>>81014070
I'd assume plenty kids learn if they're given a pet, at least the ones that don't treat pet care like it's a trend they can lose interest with.
>>81014109
I dunno if it's still a thing, but don't parents still do the whole "ran away" act if the kids pet dies without the kid knowing?
>>81014149
Only the shitty ones. My parents didn't pull shit like that with my brothers and I. I had a pet mouse that live 26 months before it died, right around Christmas, and shit was fucking devastating for little second-grader me. My mother made it clear that I should always be proud I kept the mouse alive that long at my age.
>>81014188
>All of the pets of my youth that I remember usually were taken somewhere else, not because they were sick or dying, but because life prevented my family from holding onto them any longer
>At 21 I experience my very first pet death
>And it ended up being me having to put my dog down with my own hands because we literally had no money to take her to the vet and I couldn't stand seeing her suffer anymore
Good lord that destroyed me. I can't even remember sobbing that hard since I was a child.
>>81014149
My first non-dog pet was two mice. Parents told me they escaped and after school, every day I'd happily look around the house and backyard for hours til one day while taking out the trash I saw them at the bottom. Turned out that the dog had knocked over their shitty plastic tubed cage they had and got to them.
Then a year later or so I had four mice and I was told they ran away. Sobbed under my bed for like an hour before they cracked and told me that while cleaning their cage, my dad left them outside for too long and the sun fucking cooked them alive.
Lying to me fucked me up more. I was well able to understand what happened was an accident but I remember yelling and chewing them the fuck out about lying to me, how that yes I'm sad but it hurt more when people lie to me.
Really my parent's ignorance on keeping pets dawned on me hard and even for pets I didn't even own I'd take out like 12 books from the library on how to take care of pets and generally be an elitist if I saw them doing something wrong with even the dogs(don't feed them chocolate/onions, made them stop using a choke chain and learn to actually train our dog, etc).
>>81014262
The saddest thing I've ever read is an account by someone who had to work at a shitty, low income animal shelter. And his incredibly detailed account of the regular culling of the animal population, the small bargains he had to make to save a handful of them, and the sheer trauma he suffered being a part of it.
>>81014334
Kind of reminds me of a pair of hamsters I had, for one day.
The second day, I'm returning from kindergarten and finding one of my brothers scooping the chewed up remains into a bag. The little buggers had escaped their cage and got eaten by our resident 3-legged cat.
>>81014149
I had a tortoise, we sometimes used to let him roam supervised on the grass in the garden and he seemed very happy.
One day I woke up and couldn't find him, my parents said they'd put him outside for a while and that the phone had rung. By the time they'd finished the call the tortoise was nowhere to be seen and must have run away.
I was naturally devastated. Trouble is it sounded so plausible that I didn't question it. Years later it finally twigged:
My tortoise *ran* away.
Damn, it was like going through the loss all over again, and it was made worse by the fact that I was too dumb to realize I'd been told a blatant lie.
>>81014403
Don't mean to offend, but I swear this sounds like the setup of a joke you'd see in Venture Bros or Simpsons.
>My pet turtle ran away!
>HOW?!
>>81014334
God it took me fucking forever to convince my parents not to feed our dog onions and chocolate. It's like they had this stubbornness about them and didn't want their son telling them things. They finally stopped doing it when my dad read about how it's bad for dogs and started doing it, and my mother followed suit. Frustrated me that they only stopped after they themselves learned about it.
>>80979352
https://youtu.be/ZRwk0QdRGS4
The moment when koda finds out hurt me so much when I first watched it.
>>81014438
How did the dog survive? Isn't even just a little chocolate enough to kill them?
>>81014403
I'm sure your parents had trouble stiffing their own laughter when they realized that they actually told you that as the lie
>>81014429
It does, which shows you how stupid and naive I was.
Then there's the whole dealing with death and that my parents willfully lied off the back of that. So many illusions shattered in such a short space of time.
>>81014459
Well the thing is, most chocolate produced these days actually doesn't have the chemical that is toxic to dogs (or at least thats what I read) but still just to be safe you shouldn't feed them any. And even then, it's different for all dogs. Sometimes a tiny bit will drop them dead, sometimes a dog can eat pounds of chocolate across their whole life and it won't do anything. Again, better safe than sorry. Most of the time it was just my mom feeding her M&Ms or bits of chocolate cookies or donuts when she got full.
>>81014472
I wonder if I missed out on something when I never had any massive illusion shattering moments in my life. I believed in Santa, but over the years I started to believe less in him until one night I spied my parents sneaking around putting presents under the tree. Didn't really hit me hard, just sort of "well i saw this coming" Shit I learned about sex on my own WAY before I even hit puberty, can't even remember how early. Tooth Fairy, never really believed in it. I guess maybe magic not being real was probably the 'biggest' illusion shattering, well 'shattering' I just kind of accepted shit as I grew up.
>>81014461
Not that guy, but my parents once admitted how they had to trade places while chastising one of my brothers for not informing them he had gone to a friend's house. They knew he was sorry, and were more relieved than angry, but felt they had to "teach a lesson" so he'd learn not to do something like that again. They took turns yelling and scream, and then let the other take over while the first had a laugh in the other room because they knew how deeply sorry my brother was. Our other brother even stumbled upon them as my mother was taking her "break", but they got him to clam up because they knew the lesson wouldn't stick if they were found laughing about it.
>>81014459
No, a little chocolate isn't going to hurt them and even milk chocolate doesn't have much actual chocolate in it but it isn't good for them in the first place so why bother?
My dad is one of those people who will get mad if the dog throws up but he can't seem to comprehend maybe he should stop feeding them absolutely anything and constantly, and suddenly switching up their diets.
It's also based on weight. A big dog eating a herseys bar probably isn't going to do anything other than maybe give it an upset stomach. The dogs weren't fat or anything but I was way more concerned about the amount of onions my dad incorporated into his food and often just shoved what left overs into the dog bowl.
>>81014556
Parents are weird like that
>Dad/Mom, this thing you grew up thinking is true? Yeah it's wrong, completely
>I highly doubt that, how could the past be wrong about things!
>>81014403
It's actually possible for that kind of thing to happen genuinely. Most stories I've heard happened when people left a turtle outdoors unattended for a short moment and thought it's too slow to get into any trouble, but turns out it wasn't. For example here's one story of such a case:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1290631/Runaway-pet-tortoise-goes-missing-years--mile-half-home.html
If your parents have confessed that they lied to you, then I guess this point is moot. But if they still insist on their story being true, it's possible that your pet actually did manage to escape.

Not really playing when they did it to drive the lesson home. They weren't laughing because they were mean, they were happy he was alright. Yet having to lie, which they had tried to never do with us (beyond the harmless things like Santa), and his very apparent regret in not informing them, they couldn't control themselves.

I dunno, Nani and Lilo needed SOMETHING to break up the cycle they were in. There had to be something big and completely different than what they were used to, that came crashing into their lives.
It just was aliens that came crashing in and got adopted because aliens sell. And we got some belonging scenes that also worked really well from the adoption of Stitch and complemented the human drama a lot. "I fyou want... you can join our family. It's little, and broken. But still good. Yeah, still good" is probably the most quietly powerful line in the entire film.
