I haven't watched this show since the first couple episodes debuted, but I'm glad this is still running. I just watched a couple clips and it retains some good humour and fun animation.

I got a bit of a Calvin & Hobbes vibe from it, but I don't know if that's a whole lot different than other kid's cartoons. Is it more than a coincidence that the family is named the Wattersons? The writers ever mention that?

Continuity is very light in Gumball and it's generally only done for humour purposes. You might miss a bit, but there's no reason you couldn't just ask here if you're a bit confused but you wouldn't miss much. I think they really only started using continuity from S2 anyway

S1 isn't shit, but it's quite different and much more innocent. Even if you don't like S2, you should try S3 because even they differ though not as drastically. S4 is sort of a mix between S2 and S3 and it's been great so far

Amazing World of Gumball is weird with it's continuity. They're is no continuity and it's almost always played for laughs, but the fact that the show has no continuity is not only acknowledged but is hinted at to lead something bigger which I won't spoil.
