you should deticate more time on refining it rather than churn out pages, these look more like 3 minute sketches than anything
visuals are most of what make a comic, if you want readers to stay you gotta appeal

Rendering for the render god. It's kinda weird trying to do this in a new program, but I think I got the sequence to be kinda funny at least.

>>80929843
Even if it is just line art, that's not a lot of time to be spending on an entire page, Anon. Especially when you're not very experienced at it you should be taking the time to double and triple check every panel for anatomy, look up image reference for poses, iterate a few different page layouts etc.

Hooray! One more chapter down, three more to go to finish this arc!
This chapter I actually had quite a lot of fun drawing because of the variety in character/monster design. Plus I felt that chapters 3 and 4 had gotten the story a bit TOO much on the serious side and that needed to be rectified.

>>80928234
>What completely turns you away from a comic, no matter how well its written or how good it is?

I really can't think of much; plenty of things irk me, but there's little I can get over.

>What turns you towards?
Pre-WWI historical setting

>>80929843
>a page takes me 1-2 hours.

That's not very long at all, though... I mean, it's fine for short simple gag comics. But for a more story-based comic you could afford to spend more time on it

>>80930876
Which program is that?

I had also thought of having joke panels after each chapter, but I'm barely able to keep up with he main pages themselves!

Bad webpage. Small text. Bad art. Artist and/or writer is a shithead.

Man, every time I see Gwyn's legs I'm more amazed that she manages to fly.

>Which program is that?
Krita. I've been playing around with it for the better part of a year because I like the way it handles selections, layers and custom brushes better than GIMP (and something about the way the brush tracks just feels nicer), but I didn't want to make the switch mid-chapter.

The joke strips are because I really want to avoid having a complete hiatus in between chapters when I'm only updating once a week to begin with. I figure having smaller updates for two months while I get chapter 2 ready to launch is better than having no updates at all for a month.

We're pretty proud of Osakan Riot. She's a love letter to joshi puroresu (female pro wrestling from Japan) and hopefully we can use her right. We'll find out a bit more about her and where she is in life later in this issue.

If anyone's wondering, the 3 joshi wrestlers she is primarily based off of are Bull Nakano, Combat Toyoda and Jaguar Yokota.

Hey guys, long time /co/ lurker, first time exploring this general. Couple questions,
The goody bag was excellent, I have no artistic training so anatomy and reference help is great. It's a slow process and I figure with enough practice the drawings will get better.
But my main issue is coloring. K6BD and unsounded have clear, refined coloring. I'm using coral painter, and I've played around with hue, but I can't get colors to be "bright" or clean.
Is it a brush setting? Or an effect?
>>
>>80934441
Gotcha, it's a pretty neat comic so far. Keep going!
>>
>>80934694
I'm not sure what you mean by bright or clean. Could you explain in more detail? Maybe provide an example of how others do it and how you get it wrong?
>>
>>80934694
this is something really tough to deal with, i've had trouble with it myself for years. i've learned a few things that might help
1. colors are relative. nobody has ever successfully made something look bright and glowy in broad daylight. you have to darken everything else, simulating what your vision naturally does in the presence of something bright, if you want to depict something looking bright
2. make sure youre in RGB mode not CMYK. a lot of the brighter colors are denied you in the latter
3. crank saturation up, then raise lightness slowly. sometimes you can't have a light AND saturated color that looks bright instead of pale, that's just the business of the beast (Xenoblade X makes this clear when you try to change the visor/lights color on your mech. some hues simply do not glow)
4. Sometimes you can fool the eye into seeing a color that aint there. make the center of something white or yellow or some other super light color, then fade out to the actual color towards the edges. if you look closely at a picture of a lightsaber the blade is white, only the glow is colored. that's because at a certain point everything's white if it's bright enough.

1458011886252.jpg
85KB, 558x344px
>>80934927
Thank you, this is a huge help. My other issue is refining. The panel I posted earlier is simple brushwork and line art. But this example of gunnerkrigg has far, far superior coloring. Is this saturation again? Hue? What is he doing to get from initial coloring to how most digital art looks in the end?
>>
>>80935135
youre using a brush tool and scribbling. try using a solid pen tool and drawing solid shapes. or just using fill bucket, no shame in it.
Then AFTER you have solid colors, that's when you can add brushing
>>
>>80935290
Thank you, that is absolutely what I needed

I might storytime the book chapter when it comes out though.

Anyways, sorry that I've been so dead lately, I haven't been aloud to draw on the computer.

Anyways, I can get on the computer again, but I have no access to my tablet at the moment, so here's a part of the script for Chapter 17 The Tournament, Part 1.

I can say that some of the main characters will look different when we see them next time, some more than others.

>>80934441
I like issue 2 so far very much. It's funny and light hearted while having some deeper implications. It breaks my heart that Jackie thinks Janice is "lame" like all teenagers do, yet idolises Miss Melee at the same time and Janice just decided to live with that. She keeps the secret. Having the responsibility but never getting the appreciation. Am I reading too deep into it? Don't answer. I like over thinking. And super heroes.

>>80936291
if he's burnt from head to toe i really like the hidden faces of the first and third ones, maybe the head of the third with the body of the first
>>
>>80928719
Well, I like anything with either good writing or good art. I rarely dislike anything unless it's got bad writing AND bad art.

If I had to be more specific, I'd say bad pacing is what can really ruin a comic. I read a lot of manga so it's an issue I encounter pretty often. On the other hand being accustomed to rahter long-running series, western comics tend to feel a bit rushed or underdeveloped to me.

I especially notice this when comparing cape to action manga. While the manga action scenes are usually pretty long, thought out and even complicated, the obligatory ""fight"" scenes in cape comics are almost always just one or two double-spreads of the characters throwing awkward poses. It has no flow at all.

I guess that's what I get for being a weaboo faggot.
>>
>>80938696
oh okay. well, then the same thing goes basically. youd have to be really careful with those bandages to let the hair puff out like that. probably not possible
when you said trapped by a monster i thought it had wrapped itself around him. My bad
>>
>>80930876
That last panel is excellent, keep it up.

Does anyone else have the problem that they sometimes think of amazing scenes without having a framework for it? They just pop into my head out of nowhere and I spent sometime fleshing them out down to poses, composition, even paneling not knowing anything about context.

Then I take a step back and think: Yeah, this is a great climax for chapter 27 of this story that doesn't exist.

When I come up with a consistent story at all it's usually reverse-engineered from several random scenes like that...

>>80941207
Everyone has those "cool scenes" or "awesome moments" they want to do. The hard part is the legwork building up to that; that's what actual story telling is. If you can only imagine single scenes that are in all likelihood a mishmash of tropes that you've seen in other stories in the past, that makes you a stupid ideas guy.
>>
>>80941207
Do you have a sketch book or scripts on your pc or just notes?

I don't keep track of the stuff enough and I've probably forgotten dozens of chapters worth of good material over the years...

When you think of a scene is more visual or dialogue / character based?
>>
>>80941543

just notepad documents.
if it's too visual to write down, i sketch it. but usually i dont think of visual stuff ahead of time. not beyond 'a neat costume idea or hairstyle'

Well there doesn't seem to be main characters, perspective jumps around a lot, the world is modern day but has fantasy races and monsters as well. One of the storylines i got to read a lot of involved a group of people called trackers, were hunting down vampires and slaughtering them indiscriminately, even though only a single vampire was actually murdering people. A guy who is a reincarnation of an ancient necromancer who is cursed to slowly transform into a skunk monster and his androgynous demon friend got caught up in the trackers murdering a hive, put on masks and tried help the vampires when the murderous vampire shown up and started killing the trackers and vampires alike, the necromancer and demon manage to save a female vampire who's legs were broken by a tracker so the necromancer has to piggyback her around as they try to get to their car, that's when she took the sketchbook from me, there's more arcs and stories, and all her sketchbooks seem to be the same universe, its frustrating because i haven't read many complete stories of hers, she's so shy ever since she gave up on a digital art career

Alright so I'm trying to start my first webcomic, it's about an imaginary friend named "Reddie", who is a fuzzy red monster who loves fun, yet she hates her owner, Amelia, who is miserable and hot tempered. Reddie then hangs out with Amelia's neighbor, Eric, who loves fun and has no imaginary friend. So the two hang out, yet I don't know what direction I should take this.

Yet to tell you the truth, I don't know what to do with this, I always get these ideas, draw some sketches but then I have no idea what to do next.

Should I just think of the ending first then start with the beginning?
>>
>>80949008
just draw something draw a lot of stuff man.
>>
>>80948940
people understand their suggestion won't be taken every single time. they'd rather you just get on with it, do whichever one you choose, then they can give ANOTHER command. the fun is giving lots of commands and then finally yours gets in
>>
>>80949008
an imaginary friend who doesnt get along with the kid that imagined them, but gets along with a different kid? that's nuts man. that is.. probably a unique concept. I don't think i've ever heard that before
>think of the ending first?
I would say think of the satisfying reveals here. The explanations. the reasons for this happening. Then work towards how you lead up to those. I mean how would a situation like that be solved? what does it MEAN? is amelia not really miserable and mean inside? is Reddie proof of that? are they going to sort of.. give her therapy?
>>
>>80949041

>an imaginary friend who doesnt get along with the kid that imagined them, but gets along with a different kid? that's nuts man. that is.. probably a unique concept. I don't think i've ever heard that before

Yeah, I'm trying to do this where Amelia was once happy but SOMETHING happened, the only person that knows is Reddie, yet whenever she tries make Amelia happy or to get past it, she still wants to stay miserable.

So she starts hanging around Eric, who dealt with a lot but was always happy and liked fun, so whenever Amelia would get mad and want to be alone, Reddie sneaks off to Eric.

Sorta like Reddie cheating on Amelia as an imaginary friend in some comedic way.

>I would say think of the satisfying reveals here. The explanations.

Great advice, I'll need to really think of some good reveals with not only Amelia but Reddie too. I thought about making it really dark but I don't know.

(Might change the name Reddie too, I just made that name out of nowhere)

>What completely turns you away from a comic, no matter how well its written or how good it is?
Slooooooooooow update schedule. I'd love to get into Lackadaisy Cats, it looks funny and gorgeous, but with months between updates I'd forget everything that had been going on

>What turns you towards?
If it's not very well-written or good, signs of genuine enthusiasm/desire to get better from the artist can persuade me to stick around

>>
>>80939888
Well, it's not so much that I keep it intentionally messy as that I don't want to clean it up before I'm absolutely sure about the phrasing. I usually get a lot of ideas for how to improve the dialogue while I'm working on a page, and it would be a pain to have to erase cleaned-up lettering that I'd spent a lot of time on.

>>
>>80951063
>but with months between updates I'd forget everything that had been going on

This is exactly why I haven't touched Lackadaisy in... I honestly think it's two years, at this point.

It's a shame, because Tracy Butler is a great artist. And with that I mean she actually does a lot of research about what to draw. It's on the level of obsessive Eurocomic artists, honestly. Most people would just go "1930's prohibition? That's fedora's and tommyguns, right?" but Butler does stuff like mention some radio in the background is anachronistic by a period of maybe ten years, but she put it in because it looks cool. Or she gives a short history of bakelite. Point is, she knows her stuff.

BUT... I really hate the pacing of Lackadaisy. It feels like one of those webcomics that's just never going to get to the point. And if you're only going to give me a few pages a year, you can't waste them on characters being cute. And I understand that's the appeal of the comic, but it also has the semblance of plot in there. You've got Freckle, or whatever his name is, being crazy on the front page, but for most of the comic (until he picked up a tommygun) he was a young, PTSD-riddled veteran who jumped at his own shadow. Shit, girl, get to the point!

>What completely turns you away from a comic, no matter how well its written or how good it is?

As seen above. Bad pacing. A lot of webcomic artists seem to be under the impression that, because they're not producing for a limited number of pages, they have to pack every inconsequential moment in there. Sometimes this gets really bad. There's this zombie comic where one year in real life seems to roughly correspond with one day in the comic. So this is a post-apocalyptic comic set in an apocalypse so fresh that the power hasn't even gone out yet. And where the main character should have been bed-ridden for its entire run, on account of her broken fucking ribs. That sort of shit just really takes me out of it.

Write them down, set them aside for later. What you may have is half of an idea, or only enough of an idea for a few good pages. If you write it down, let it sit, and think on it, you may find a way to improve one of them, or even better, roll multiple ideas into one product.

Posted in the Batman thread, got no feedback, basically trying to "loosen up". First image (top left two panels) is from a autobio comic I'm working on, very minimal pencilling and inked with a fixed-width pen (.30 rapidograph I use for speech bubbles, usually--figured it'd do me good to step out of comfort range tools-wise), will be "coloured" with one shade of screentone (LOVE using that stuff). Image on right is from a story I'm redrawing (basically 'cause of line quality--inking with a Hunt 102 but want to keep a "spidery" line without TOO much width variation, though I do want some) 5 pages of. Again, trying to be looser and not render as much as my "usual" style, the bottom left image which is my ongoing comic "Roger Recovery" which is a bit tighter, blueline, then graphite, then inked with a Hunt 108 (really flexible crowquill nib originally for calligraphy I believe, loadsa cartoonists use 'em, though, I like their line quality a lot). Any feedback, criticism etc is appreciated. My art isn't supposed to be "pretty", I'd rather be a good cartoonist than a good artist if you get the distinction? Like I make sure my lettering's always tip-top, to me it's as much a part of the art as the actual drawings.

I always love seeing your stuff. My only issue is the drawings don't always read because they're so nuanced on every plane - I'd try scanning them in, white to transparency, locking opacity, and making those lines lighter shades of gray as they recede into the background. But, assuming you wanna keep it traditional - you could also try using tone, rather than line, to illustrate planes further away from the viewer (kind of like so - http://www.tcj.com/color-workbook-1/)

I really love the illustration on the right, though - the guy in profile gives me a Clowes vibe.

Oh, okay, I get what you mean, thanks! And thanks very much for the kind words familia means a lot.
Love Santoro's theories on comics. I've made a few of his "composition aids" (y'know the overlapping circles, diagonals etc) that I sometimes bust out if I've done a4 size roughs to check composition and stuff...always been intruiged by the Kurtzman method (adopted by Bagge and Spiegleman and more) of tracing paper, different colour pencil for each layer, and refining the page w/each layer...I think Charles Burns uses it as well? Then I'm in awe of guys like Jaime Hernandez who can just "plop out" a few incredibly loose, sketchy lines and then produce a beautiful page when they go to ink...Clowes was talking about looking at some of his original Jaime pages on a lightbox and not seeing any white-out anywhere...
Trying to work up the courage to do a colour comic or at least a two-or-three colour comic--but can't decide on the medium. I did think about getting lineart scanned onto acetate and colouring on the reverse? Apparently Dash Shaw did that for some of his Mome/Unclothed Man stories.....
Anyway, thanks again!

oh and also, if you drew a line across the waist, it could have a swivel there. that way one of the arms could quickly point directly forward for pinpoint aiming with what i assume are guns in the hands (going by the 'before') and also for spinning enemies around and throwing them. though obviously you'd want the cockpit anchored to the pelvis so the poor dog doesnt get dizzy

>>
>>80971190

shit i think you could do that in one sentence

>>80971427
First one is easy - have the character call her "mom". If you can, incorporate a bunch of happy family photos on the wall of their home in the background or on a table or dresser in the foreground.
Second and third, maybe have the mom threaten to tell his dad about this mischief when he gets home. If you have the space, have show the mother going "oh, that kid" with a smile until she realizes it might be more serious than usual.

I kind of like this, fuck, fuck, FUCK digital lettering, though. It's so careless, to me. It's as much as a part of your art as your "actual" drawing. And don't give me the : "but I have really bad handwriting!" excuse. I don't care. At least it has PERSONALITY. Get a fucking Ames guide and do it by hand.
Sorry but shitty cookie cutter digital letterr=ing really riles me, Anon. You're doing your own artwork a disservice by using someone else's boring bullshit. YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT AND IT'S OBVIOUS BY LOOKING AT YOUR FUCKING DRAWING SKILLS!!!

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

Eh, I already kinda do a comic like that but I guess I should commit to it all the way. I'm just afraid of putting too much of myself in the character. Self-triggering, i guess. wip1 Scenes Comic Con Furries.png

I used to draw comics a lot, but I haven't really done any for a few years now (I was working on digital painting instead). I'm trying to get back in the habit of drawing strips but I think I'm a little rusty.

Anyway - work in progress; feedback and suggestions appreciated.
Does it read okay or should I try to find more interesting camera angles?
I'm breaking the 180 degree rule a lot here.
Will need to fix the perspective in panel 2, that one is going to be tricky to work out.
I might flip the action in panel 3 so it leads in to the next panel.

Based on personal experience of being behind a table at comic shows. I can't really fault them because it is very hard to see out of those mascot heads, but it's very frustrating when your potential target audience just kind of walks past, all oblivious. I think I've sold more 'furry' comics to curious passersby than to actual Furry fans.

>>80984835
>I'm breaking the 180 degree rule a lot here.
I only see it happen once, in panel 4. Maybe make it like panel 5 except with the furries on the left of the comics guy.
Maybe have the comics guy already noticing the furries in panel one so the cut to what he's looking at is less jarring.

Speaking of panel 2, it doesn't quite break the 180 rule, but I think it would work better if the viewpoint was a little outside of the booth.
>>
>>80984835
this is terrible. the technical aspects are OK, but very ordinary.

>can't see or hear very well
makes it very impersonal, when it's largely a personal experience that's being shared and not a story or joke.

>they probably just didn't hear me. it's probably really hard to see or hear in those suits. (nervous smiling)
Adding this to the last panel makes it about the rationalizations of the insecurities that all human beings feel and can relate to. This may not be what you felt, it's just what I imagine I would feel. More confident people may still think these rationalizations, but with a confident swagger instead of a nervous smile.
>>
>>80984835
Flip panel 4, so the Furries are entering from the left; there's only one speaker, so it doesn't matter that they'll be on the right-hand side of the panel. This puts the viewer on the same side of the table (and from the same viewpoint) for panels 3-6.
Viewpoint for panel 2 should be from the aisle, instead of standing on the table.

You could probably combine panels 1 and 2, then move panel 3 to the top tier. P1, 2 and 3 could even be one scene running across the width of the page, split into 2 panels.
Panels 4 and 5 would then be the middle tier, with one scene running across the two panels, but split with a divider (dig through the Cul De Sac archives on GoComics.com, to see how Richard Thompson handles these sort of transitions).
Last panel becomes full width, so you could drop the height of the bottom tier. Commentary about not being able to see or hear in the mascot heads goes here.

by having good writing and good art, the cornerstones of what makes people want to share your work with others.

discussion begets more discussion. people want to talk about what they enjoy. Many comics are simply what "the author enjoys", but many comics are also largely ignored and have a readership # you can count on your hands.

Ooooh, You are in your anime phrase.

Probably the easiest way would be to get a website, whether it's tumblr, tapastic or build your own.

As for physically printing comics, there is a thriving small-press/zine culture and it is now economically possible to get a decent-looking publication (in terms of print quality).

If you mean promoting and distribution, that's a different beast altogether.

I rewrote and redrew the first strip several times. The characters were too shallow, everything too bland. Tone/blacks not done yet.

Thoughts?
>>
>>80994316
The purple hair really blends together with the purple background in the second panel I can barely tell them apart if I squint. If you made it as dark as in the first panel it would work better. The green cape is also too close in value to the background, imo, though it's not as bad because of the hue contrast.

I think your character would look a lot more cohesive if you got took the green and brown parts a bit closer to yellow.

The physical comedy works here (really really well), but the timing might be off. A beat (or an otherwise low dialogue panel) might sort of wind you up for the punch. And you could test something shorter, faster, louder in that last panel. You might also break out some abstract color or lighting for emphasis. Or don't. Not sure how time and labor intensive this would be with your process.

How do you guys suggest building an audience?
I've lurked the past few threads and from what I've gathered its basically;
-Make a tumblr or somewhere you can post drawings of mostly fan art
-Keep doing this building up a small following
-Throw in some character designs for your comic
-Build more following in the process
Anything else?
>>
>>80984383
Even though it's fucking manga style I actually like it, shading on the monster is well effective. And bonus points for hand-lettering! Do you use an Ames guide?
>>80996946
You've progressed SO MUCH! congrats Dewd!
>>
>>80998359
It's not a good idea to force creativity.
Just do something mundane for a bit and if you feel you've got something, build on that
>>
>>81007036
iunno man i've been working on just keeping my following from becoming toxic and negative. anyone that knows me knows i'm the kinda person that can rapidly become everyone's least favorite. it's better sometimes, depending who you are and what you draw, to just gather your fans where you can, people who like your shit, and not try to shove it in the face of anyone who'd find it unpleasant and decide you've now rattled their beehive and need a stinging.
Basically whatever makes you distinct WILL get you an audience, and will in the process turn others off, so be careful with it. like you would a potent-ass sauce. if there's nothing super distinct about you, get something. not a gimmick, but just something you realize makes you special and memorable.
and for god's sake whatever you do, resist that urge to leap onto your new audience and kiss them all for giving you attention. You've gotta play hard to get.
>>
>>81007260
BTW, >>80984383, it'd be nice seeing you ink with a nib instead of a fixed-width pen. If you want thin lines try a maru nib or a mapping pen. I think more variation would suit your style though. Are you using markers for greytone?
>>
>>81007561
You are an example of "keep doing what you love and people with similar tastes will follow your work along the way"

I'm still baffled that your comic keeps going across two (or there are more?) generations of characters. regardless of how silly the theme is. hope i can read through it over a weekend in the future.
>>
>>81008622
It's funny because a lot of times when people analyze old comics that are still around, it's like 'oh jeez it's a time capsule of gamerdork / furry / whatever culture' but aside from me and Strange Candy, I don't know that anyone else has held onto the early-00s animu thing so tightly. Even fucking Misfile has clearly tried its best to get out of that, and turned itself fugly in the process. so I'm always like, trying to FIND those holdouts. Or at least people nostalgic for it.. Because I started drawing comics when I felt like my life was over and it pretty much was. Nothing significant has happened since then and that's not looking like it'll change anytime soon.. even though I can't quite remember what the old spark felt like, even when I try watching old anime again to get that shit going.
But it's okay because I can keep drawing inspiration from a lot of modern cartoons. Ones created by people just like me except their lives DID go somewhere, who have similar inspirations.
>generations
Basically just two. Though there's some overlap. Kinda like how Kurilin kept on hanging out with Gohan on adventures and nobody thought it was weird or anything. I only just recently realized how spaced apart Mizu's siblings are. Their parents had like, one kid every 15 years.

As far as the website goes, I am currently working on:
-Getting my title graphic up
-changing font
-adding description of characters, update schedule, and description of basic plot

Hey co, I'm brainstorming a hotel/restaurant setting for a comic idea I'm working on, and I need some ideas for characters.

I have the manager, who also runs the restaurant.

I guess I need someone to work recption as well. Maids and cleaners for the hotel, and waitresses for the restaurant. What else would be fun to include? Maybe some spa workers for people who want to go enjoy a sauna or a massage.
>>
>>81014283
Chefs for the restaurant.

Janitor.

Lifeguard for the pool?

People who the restaurant makes regular business with, like the truck driver that delivers their fresh-caught fish every morning, the cleaning service that takes care of the bed linens, pest control, plumber etc.

Regular customers? Like, a businessman that travels to the place often for work and always stays in the same suite.

Health inspector?

>topic- I think if a comic is really well written/well drawn, then the only way it'd turn me away is if it's basically just pure fetish fuel. I don't even disagree with that way of making a comic, It's just not my bag. Alternatively I tend to like comics where the writer is really clever. Like, I take a step back and say "holy shit, I would never have thought of that". Love those moments

Also, not posting a page- but posting a page of doodles. I was getting really- tired? while drawing, and wasn't looking forwards to it as much, and I realized the reason was that all my drawings were for "work". Freelance or comic work.

I think it's important to occasionally just mindlessly draw, and to have fun doing so. Anyways- if anyone is feeling that same sense of lethargy, a doodle page is a really good pick up

Hey /co/, would you guys read this webcomic:

Essentially, the MC is forced into gaining the power to turn into a star, every night for a distant solar system.

So godlike character made a mistake, and now to correct it, everynight the MC would gradually gain stronger powers (flying, explosions, fire, etc.) until he had to uncontrabely float away to turn into a star, then at dawn, float down to earth, and continue the majority of the next day as a normal human.

It would be a normal hassle to the MC until he got involved with trying to stop whatever is chosen to antagonize supporting characters, and he's able to utilize his powers at dusk to help, but gets torn away at inopportune moments, helpless.

Death-by-waifu-nose-stabbing-accident doesn't count for getting into the hall of the slain, I'm afraid. Einheriar probably recover from that kind of damage even if it isn't strictly wounds from combat, but Skalmöld doesn't do dead dudes (much to the chagrin of one of her exes).

>>81026794
Oh shit yeah I see the resemblance now. Did you use a thinner line for the lineart here than you usually use for your comic or am I misremembering?

Thanks!
I don't see any future role for Asbiorn in the story at present. It's not impossible that he'll show up in one of the later chapters that are currently less defined, but he's definitely not showing up in the next few chapters - there won't even be any scenes set in Midgard for a long while.

As for the valkyries, they're SUPER made up though I do try to stick to names that appear to have actually been considered the names of valkyries, and I try to keep them generally consistent with the original Norse/Germanic myth ideas of what they were and how they worked. There's not a lot of surviving characterization to most of them, but I do try to keep them consistent with what little is mentioned - like, the valkyrie Göndul is mentioned to have a spear and a horse in the saga of king Hákon the Good, so in the comic she has a horse and a spear. I'm almost certainly gonna mess it up though. More well-known valkyries like Brynhildr won't be showing up much, but they do exist.

I don't think there's more than two mentions of Skeggöld and Skalmöld in the surviving poetry - Skeggöld (spelled Skeggjöld in that place) is mentioned in Grimnismál carrying beer to the einheriar alongside a bunch of other valkyries, and both are mentioned in Nafnathulur, a list of poetic names for various things (like, "here's a bunch of poetic ways to refer to axes, here's all the names for the sons of Thor, here's a bunch of goddess names etc"). The two words are used as an alliterating couplet in a description of the chaos leading up to Ragnarök (Völuspá, IIRC), which is what made me think of having them as co-stars in the comic.

I might make up some new names out of whole cloth (like one named Hammaröld who's a walking MC Hammer reference) if I let my terrible sense of humor get the upper hand.

It's just digital vs. the usual traditional, and being a lazy bum I'm just using the same custom brush for everything

It think the very grounded setting of the comic makes the made-up elements look like they're legit. Possibly the thing I like the most about the comic is that everything feels coherent and it doesn't want to be "epic" or dramatic.

The things I criticized about the comic were mostly art-related and you're fixing them. The characters read much better in the later pages and you've got a great sense of light.

(Yes I really care about your comic, it's the most undeservedly under-the-radar in the thread and arguably the most promising).

Pic related. I'm planning to start spreading the word around once I've got my site up to snuff, so hopefully I won't be undeservedly under-the-radar for too much longer.

>everything feels coherent and it doesn't want to be "epic" or dramatic

I'm glad you think it's coherent. I wouldn't say that I don't want to be epic or dramatic, just that I don't want to sell the reader on the drama or epicness - it's matter of fact. I want to have a really down-to-earth baseline (where an impossibly hardcore killing machine lady is still in serious trouble when she gets jumped by three grown men with knives) so that when the Stuff of Legend like Fenrir shows up, it has the appropriate impact.
Like, if Demon's Souls had a protagonist that looked like a high-level WoW character rather than a fairly generic knight with a sword, it wouldn't be as impressive to defeat the giant monsters in the game. Anyone can beat the ancient demon king if they've got pauldrons the size of their heads and are dual wielding glowy swords of doom, but for someone who basically looks like a generic soldier mook to do it (maybe even in a believable way)? Now you're talking my language.

>>81029995
Well, you could make it a simple pattern (like stripes or checkers) and maybe add some slightly-fancy embroidery to the edge, like circles and dots inside lines. Make the inside of the cloak a different color with a different pattern. Maybe add some tassels or buttons or a big fancy clasp. Basically, what >>81030053
said - look up a bunch of cloaks and steal liberally.

yeah but if it wasnt obvious that, generally speaking, in life, being tougher and smarter and more independent was better, then there'd be no point in making the metaphor. like, maybe don't be the same with your deity that you be with your fellow man. this guy you CAN let your guard down with and successfully bow down to without expecting to be fleeced.

>not being a NEET and exclusively suckling on the government's teat for your income
Nah but seriously, you gotta prioritise Urgent Important over Not Urgent Important.
It sucks, but maybe giving your comic more time to age in the back of your mind will benefit you somehow.

I redesigned the protag a little. adding a poncho, instead of a cloak.
After finishing this first "chapter" of my story, I want to go back and redraw it with better art and the redesigns.
I want to focus on adding more to the backgrounds even though I suck at them.
>>
>>81039531
I like the direction your art is heading.

You should really think about just using some big brush to splash in color. It will give the characters life and also add a stylistic feel if you do it just crudely enough.

He looks more like sidekick material to me. I can't really picture this guy doing much besides saying cheerful things to someone else.
His body is pretty vague. The body proportions are often important in reflecting the character's identity & personality, so it'd help a lot to work on that aspect.

Working on writing a comic. It's going well, and I've been strict about trimming the fat and sticking only with the best ideas that serve the plot.
It's often really hard to judge when you simply need to get rid of a character or scene or such though. Do you guys have any personal guidelines or criteria to decide when it's time to "kill your darlings" and scrap an idea, no matter how appealing it is?

I'm right here Anon. I've been real busy with real life shit. Currently house hunting, and planning a trip I've had marked on my calendar for half a year now. Of course, working on Jasper as well on any off time I may have.

I pop in every now and then and give any feedback I can. I tell myself I'll check in more often because I'm horrible at keeping track of chat rooms.

Neat. I'd leave off the doodles from the belt down - they're kinda out of the way and ddistracting, and I can't tell what they're supposed to be.
Maybe change the line going from the cigar to the pen so that it swoops down then up so it gets closer to the sleeping kid.

Is Monday + Thursday a strange pair of days to update on? I've noticed webcomics that do 2 per week tend to be Tue/Thur or Mon/Fri. Is there any reason for this?
>>
>>81050616
its probably easier to remember
mon/fri - start of week/end of week (in business and school days at least)

tues/thurs - the t's of the week

but theres many that have their own unique schedule, it wouldnt be weird for you to keep that idea
