I think it's more that none of the main cast is fully fleshed out leaving a whole lotta room to be taken in any direction.

Positive side is that people CAN use them for interesting stories that deviate from canon in some way.
Negative side is that fuckers rarely do and instead add 1 small change to justify how their own head canon.

Which is why I enjoy fics that take the characters and go WAY off canon but remain within the set world like a Arc of the Revolution or Between the Lines or Hero of the Everyman.

I have that problem with Red like Blood.
It's AU where Weiss is a vampire and Ruby is a vampire hunter, clichéd enough but with proper care could be interesting.
None of the kingdoms exist. Semblances and Aura aren't a thing, the only canon characters to make an appearance are Ruby, Weiss and Yang, and on top of everything there's a 5-10 year timeskip after the third chapter or so.
There's really nothing but names connecting it to RWBY.
It certainly doesn't help that the story itself has been very mediocre so far.

What I meant was the stories that follow the current storyline but add 1 change are duller than sin. It's FANFICTION, take the characters and create a new story with new interactions.

Give us the Jaune and Weiss moment, show us Yang and Blake being 100% open to each other, prove that Pyrrha is more than just wanting the D'arc. Fucks sake give us something interesting I've read Jaune having a Faunus kid 4 times now and it's only once been taken on the serious side of it and hasn't updated in forever.

I realized I liked Technician because of the Signal setting but now that it's gone, I find it meh.

I found the reason to be that, even ignoring if you've grown exhausted from reliving them, Volume 1's basically Initiation->Jaunedice->Whatever was left.

Initiation is rarely changed. Even if you switch the team around, it always ends the same way. Giant Grimm fight. Basically to show off the combat skills or OP semblance,

Jaunedice is used to put Cardin in his place or whatever. Normally a time where the OC or SI stands up to him. Basically a part to show off how right/strong the character is.

And then there's the dance which most don't even get to.

Ugh, I just dislike retelling stories because by then it is up to the author's writing ability to carry the story. Which often falls short.

Ironic considering I'm doing one right now but I think Jaune having a giant penis could carry my subpar writing.

I should get to drafting Grimmgirl Quest soon.

Eh. I think his handling of Shirou is pretty poor, in all honesty. Mostly HoS Shirou growing up to be like Archer. Which doesn't work for obvious reasons... Shirou never became disillusioned with his ideals in life, that doesn't happen until after he's part of the Counter Force. It's an important distinction.

Then there's the whole retconning In Flight to not actually have taken place after UBW Good, despite that being how he originally described it.

Technician starting with Jaune being enrolled in Signal was sheer gold. Where it's heading now I dread that the author sticks to canon and we get teams RWBY and JNPR.

I am following a far more than decent amount of stories, but I will say the ones I enjoy the most are when they're either Non-high school AU (A friend in Need), or have the teams scrambled (Aubretia, Interlunium) or bring a drastic change (Not Even Aura Can Heal All Wounds, Hero of The Everyman)

I loved reading it for it's comfy setting as I imagined everyone to be around 13 with Ruby 10~ish. Combine that with the wonderful Patch winter and was in love.

Then they suddenly grew up and the magic was gone and it looked like another boring retell with a different Jaune + his harem of childhood friends.

While I wasn't too fond of it, Silver was able to do just that by making an original plot and not really following the show which I liked.

I think enough interesting stuff happens in V2. It's just that none of it is plot.

Considering the dance arc that makes up half the season wasn't in the original script, and the fact that the Breach was resolved in literally five minutes, I'm pretty sure that the original concept for V2 was Mountain Glenn and then cut to the tournament.
