I thought it was a fun episode, don't seem to love it as much as you guys seem to though.

Sussie's character type always pisses me off in this show. They're usually just there to do repulsive shit that's not funny, witty or humorous in any way. It's generally just disgusting or nonsensical and I don't at all understand why they insist on these moments in the show.
Some of the writing is genuinely pretty damn brilliant and then we get some right shite in between that makes you wonder whether it really was from the same team.

I finally watched The Girlfriend and holy shit, that entire episode is gold.

I want to rewatch the whole series, but I'm worried I'll find a bunch of flaws and ruin my fond memories of S1 and 2. How bland/bad were they in comparison to now?

S1 for me is the only one that can sometimes be uncomfortable to watch, between the slightly different designs of the characters, but more specifically some inconsistencies with the later seasons (Carrie once being alive instead of being born a ghost, Ocho only making video game sounds instead of verbally communicating, Bobert apparently having a mother instead of being made by a company, the very existence of Rachel Wilson.)

It's by no means bad though, and the first season even has its own charm IMO.

Penny isn't a standard willful shapeshifter. It's emotional based and can work against her really REALLY easily. I'm certain you could force her to change shape just by inflicting enough pain. And putting space between herself and Jamie IS fighting smart. Getting into the air to breath fire as opposed to standing her ground are basic tactics of playing smart instead of playing with rage.

The Shell and the Romantic were perfect demonstrations of how little control she has over her abilities and how easily she can find herself into an undesirable form just because she feels some way or doesn't feel a particular way. That's the kind of weakness that can be ceased upon by even Jamie.

You're missing the point. This is an enraged beast charging at a child. It's over before it began. Jamie won't be able to do anything to throw Penny off her game at all. She can be a literal charging massive beast. It's not a slight bigger size, it's huge.

Even if Jamie does manage a shot in, Jamie doesn't even have much power to phase a beast. I don't see Penny in beast mode curling up because a little kid who only attacks the weak is trying to hit her. There is literally no proof she's at all strong or can even fight. It is an enraged beast, it's a charging dragon ffs, how can Jamie counteract a literal fire breathing dragon. She's a kid too. Penny has a pretty good grip on how to use her different forms, I literally went through this before. She doesn't need good fighting skills when she's a beast. The context is that she's pissed at Jamie, it doesn't matter why and there's no bringing up what if she's not because that's not in the equation. She probably won't take a hit but even if she did, I think she could handle a hit from the stubby armed Jamie.
Jamie can't handle a damn beast, it could even be a dumb beast but in the end it's a dumb beast vs a literal kid.

And she's not an enraged beast. She's a child who at any shaken feeling could turn into a rabbit or at least her normal self. If Penny had a good grip on her power, she wouldn't need Gumball to infuriate her to fend off some monsters or walking around a desert when she could fly.

It doesn't even even need to be a punch. I'm sure a bite (and Jamie IS a biter) is all Jamie needs to put Penny in a weak form.
