The Milligan story is so good. The Veitch issues suck though.

Yeah I heard good things about Milligan's run. It's pretty short but eh.
I love Animal Man after reading the Grant Morrison AM run.

Impulse bought Batman: the Black Mirror when i was down at the LCS today, I'd been meaning to read it for a while and it was about 10 bucks cheaper than i expected it to be

I have, the way I got my hands on each volume of Venom is odd. I've been wanting to puck up the rest of Venom as well as Scarlet Spider, I've just been slacking, or distracted by something else I wanted, Ostrander's Suicide Squad getting reprinted is a good example.

The comic next to Beverly is Crickets 5 by Sammy Harkham. Fucking Blood of the Virgin arc is the best thing he's ever done, if you like that kinda "literary" stripe of artcomix (like Clowes non-genre shorts, nonboring Tomine, even, I guess, stuff like Seth or even terry Laban's Unsupervised Existence), then you will love this comic. #3 has been reprinted recently so you won't hafta pay crazy prices for it any more and #4 is still available in the whatthingsdo shop.
Btw ave any of you homosexuals acquired a copy of Ganges #5 yet? Having a fuck of a time getting a copy
>>
>>80850496
Crickets 3 and 4 are out of print again. At least in whatthingsdo. Next time they go back in print I'm definitely picking them up. I've heard too many good things about it to keep putting it off.
>>
>>80850765
Fuck they went fast, it was only like 2 months ago when I saw they were reprinted! Got doubles of 3 (1st prints) and 4 (likewise), I would sell but I wouldn't wanna rip anyone off, y'know? Bought 'em as reading/"study" copies but they're still nm. Anyway, Harkham did say that BOTV will definitely be collected when finished, so there's that, /co/mrade....
Was buzzing I scored the new Keeping Two, I have the first two issues, great comic, only problem is Crane takes FUCKING AGES to send things out....last wo times I've ordered off him he sent me some cool free shit 'cause he was so tardy.
>>
>>80850765
Also , you been buying Pope Hats? One of the best alt floppies of the alt floppy resurgence, no doubt. Not sure about printing status, my LCS still has 3 and 4 available though.

I might wait for the collection then. Well, depending on how long it is supposed to be. I don't want to wait too long. And no, I haven't bought any Pope Hats. I'm still pretty new when it comes to minicomics. Pic related is my current collection plus Greys by Olivier Schrauwen and Fiffe's art portfolio. I wish I had a good LCS near me that carried these types of comics.

>>80847240
To my recollection, it's not nearly as meta as say Animal Man or Flex Mentallo. I think there is some meta elements, but it's mostly just crazy shit. Someone correct me if I misremembered.
>>
>>80851882
Aha I bought Greys a while back from Desert Island when I ordered a load of their Smoke Signal tabloid and was really impressed with it!Bought Mome from #1 and they printed a lot of Schwauren stuff, that became hs first fanta collection and I didn't like him much at first then learned to love him. I'm intruiged as to how he gets that weird "aged" look to his pages...know it's probably some digital trickery but his drawing is so organic.
Who's that Frontier dedicated to? I should buy one, one of those things I never got arond to getting, I hear the new Eleanor Davis "BDSM" issue is brilliant, and she rules anyway.
Bipolar is the Hanuka (?No, something like that, though) brothers thing from Alternative, rght? How is it? They're good artists no doubt, never read a long work by 'em, though.
>>
>>80852220
My first foray into Schrauwen was Arsene Schrauwen which got me hooked. Amazing book. I'm trying to get everything available from him now. The Frontier is Jililan Tamaki's issue. It was pretty good. I like Tamaki's artwork. And yeah, Bipolar is by the Hanuka brothers. It's alright. Each issue is a collection of short stories. Most are one-shots, but some stories go a couple of issue. I much prefer Tomer's stories to Asaf's.
>>
>>80852637
Will hafta get A.S at some point. He's very fucking good indeed, didja rate Greys or have you yet to read it? I thought it was very cool indeed.
Jillian Tamaki is, like you said, an extremely adept artist....that drybrush technique she has is just mint....haven't read That One Summer yet but Skim was great.
Wasn't it one of the Hanuka brothers who did the webcomic The Apartment? Kind of a weird deadpan horror setting? That was really good...actually maybe I'm thinking of that Israeli cartoonist who did the comic about sleeping with the girl who had her head seperated from her body but could talk and was fully cognizant...
>>
>>80853016
Greys hasn't come in yet. I'll post it one of these threads when it does. I thought that This One Summer was worthwhile. Very comfy and nostalgic. The art was the highlight for me. Not sure if that webcomic was a Hanuka brother. Bipolar is the only thing I've read by them.

GREAT PURCHASE OP!

I have a shit-ton of older Vertigo and Milligan's run on Animal Man is so hopelessly depressing but I couldn't stop reading it. I liked all the Animal Man books except the Gerry Conway garbage.

So happy Steve Dillon got a crack at it too.

Even Veitch's stuff was good. Each author went a little overboard with the "I lost my powers" though.

This is one of my 6 shelves of this stuff. I'm swimming in Hellblazer but Paul Jenkin's stuff is a chore to read so I keep going back to Carey, Milligan, Ennis and Delano's runs.

Nowadays Vertigo only seems to appeal to teenage females.

As an adult I've noticed some of us get caught up in our collecting. "I don't want this recolor version"
"I'd better buy this hardcover before it goes out of print" "glued binding.. yuck."

But I remember being a kid and getting my comics from the library or used book sales, thrift stores or anywhere I could get them and back then I didn't give a crap if the pages were matte or glossy. It didn't bother me if the trade was missing some inconsequential one-shot. I was just happy to own comics and read about characters I liked.

I feel like at some point the collector in me overshadowed the comic fan in me and I don't like it one bit.

The Korvac Saga
Defenders War
Avengers Forever (or the whole Busiek run, in my opinion)

For Spider-Man:
Kraven's Last Hunt
The Original Clone Saga (i.e., the 70s one)
Spider-Man: Blue
The Complete Alien Costume Saga (Vol. 1-2)
and there's a Roger Stern omni floating around that's the earliest stages of the Hobgoblin storyline.

Empowered is pretty fun but while the first dozen or so chapters establish everything, it's also very repetitive since literally every episode is a 'Empowered gets captured, tied up by bad guys and humiliated' episode with the only real story being her relationship with her boyfriend progressing. Once Ninjette, the demon in the belt, and the superhero association come into play things pick up and you get actual story and character development

Ordered Mowgli's Mirror by Olivier Schwauren, Uptight 5 by Jordan Crane and Agony by Mark Beyer--totally missed the fact it was back in print!

Okay, on the real--this is for the Anon's who know their contemporary capestuff/genrestuff--can anyone recommend a good miniseries or any comic, really, from Big Two or Image? I enjoyed The Vision comic, I REALLY liked the last Howard The Duck and am enjoying Paper Girls and the new Wein/Jones Swamp Thing a great deal. Oh and Southern Bastards was wicked. I tend to like clean, "classical"-looking art like Marcos Martin, of course Steve Rude, Paolo Rivera, the Paper Girls and Howard The Duck artists (soz forgotten names), no over-rendered, scratchy-inked Jim Lee style "why use three lines when three thousand will do?"-type of art...put I'm open to try owt, really. Noticing some really good work coming out of the big companies these days....I think it's 'cause there's more women in the creative side of the industry, personally.....

Art Ops is 5(?) issues in right now, and would be your best bet for something ongoing. The iZombie omnibus is available and decently priced. His Silver Surfer series is technically on #2 right now, but it's pretty much issue #18 or something like that because it's just a continuation of the run he and Slott have been on since before Secret Wars.

Cheers Anon, some cool options there, heard good things about iZombie (didn't they make a TV program of it?), Allred draws the SHIT outta ol' Norrin and Art Ops sounds like a really intriguing title. Please know that I appreciate all your recommendations, and replies, /co/mrades. Solid. Gonna drop a storytime tomorrow in your honour. N, it's not gonna be some obscure Czechoslovakian depressing allegory with existential hedgehogs or some shit, just a cool (recent) SOL comic with great dialogue, setting, beautiful cartooning and stunning verisimilitude. That's all I'm saying. Gonna scan it now.

Fuck you! Not really, but that Howard The Duck was basically one of the two or three series that got me back into buying and collecting capes/genreshit! I fucking loved it! And don't forget I'm supposed to be Mr. "le pretentious hipster gahbage lel so patrician"! Uh, so, probably not the best recommendation, then...Hah, yeah, like anyone really gives a fuck about my bullshit! But no, it is GREAT

Hemuran do you like Patrick Gleason's art or is it too busy for you? His run on SoB has been pretty outstanding visually, and I enjoy the kind lf magical adventure vibe of the whole series.

We had civil unrest for about a week so the dock-workers went on strike, so my World's Finest isn't getting here til next week I guess. Along with Miss Don't Miss Me and Lucky Penny....

Yeah, I fucked up - Miss Don't Touch Me. I loved Beautiful Darkness and have heard nothing but good things.

After that taking a little break on buying to catch up on my shelf and my digital backlog. I fell behind on my DC monthlies and long term reading projects.

Am I the only one who loves capeds but doesn't really feel much desire to collect them? It's the worst part of my shelf, my DC/Marvel because it's just a sampling of what I want to keep - so more my favourite characters or runs I reference back to a lot rather than runs of quality.

Looking through this stuff http://comicvine.gamespot.com/articles/exclusive-preview-batman-and-robin-vol-3-death-of-/1100-147645/ and I gotta say, if I was 13 he'd probably be one of my favourite artists! Which is not a diss! He has a keen design sense, great compositions, use of spot blacks and chiaroscuro; also great "movement" to his characters. On the downside I find his character design and general style a little bland and "cookie-cutter" and having googled around a bit I feel like his stuff looks best with this Mick Gray dude inking him. He gives Gleason a nice edge of refinement "sweetening the form", whatever artschool bullshit you wanna call it...they work well together. So, yeah, if there's ANY possibility that a Bats comic will make me care about the character again (he was, like many, my first superheroic love) then I'll give it a fucking go! Last Bats title I really enjoyed wasn't even Batman, it was bloody Batgirl: Year One! So, thanks for the recommendation mate. If you think of owt else, keep 'em coming, please!
>>80870483
Ah, cool, impeccable taste /co/mrade! Kerascoet are SOOOO good and incredibly versatile.....MDTM is wicked. Are you getting the double-volume NBM deal? I know it was reprinted last year; 1st's were going for bonkers prices. And Beautiful Darkness; God, what a punch in the gut. But such impeccable technique.
Unfortunately my love for capes is long, long gone, I only keep my youthful loves around, stuff like Nexus (well, anything and everything Steve Rude ever layed a finger on!), my previously-mentioned "Bat-decade", odds n' sods of Vertigo stuff...but like I said my INTEREST in capes has been piqued again; I stopped following characters many years ago, just followed creators since and 95% of my collection is yer Fantagraphics/Drawn & Quarterly/Sparkplug/Nobrow/Koyama etc etc small/boutique/micro-press and self-pubb'd shit. Because I feel that's where most innovation and experimentation within the medium is happening.

>>
>>80870789
Oh, I have. Currently deciding if I want to pick up the HC or the trade for that.
>>
>>80870727
Why?
>>
>>80870736
I love his style to pieces, so I'm a little biased but I'm mostly impressed because I've been following him since he first took over on B&R and he's come a pretty long way in a short time art wise. I will 100% give you he's weak at character and world design though, but man, he is one of the few people in action comics right now who can actually put together a good action scene. It's bizarre but so many caped artists right now don't seem to actually be able to stage a fight to save their lives.

Robin: Son of Batman has little to do with Bruce/the whole Batworld. Damian's Robin, but being tied to the al Ghuls he's much more steeped in a mystic/fantasy background compared to the other more street-level approach to the Batman. If you're looking for an excellent street level book, I definitely suggest We are Robin. It under performed, but it actually had some teen heroes struggling in a way that read really legit. Plus Harvey James did a guest issue that was really incredible art wise.

What sort of tone/books do you like in general? Something fantastical? Classic beat'em up? Deeper elements? Fun light action?
>>
>>80863065

Immortal Iron Fist by Brubaker, Fraction and Aja
Daredevil Yellow
>>
>>80871502
No doubt he can drop a great action scene, his dynamics are fantastic. But just a little too slick-style-wise, that's why I think Mick Gray is a good pairing, he gives him a more...well, it just seems like the presence of the human hand is stronger, it strengthens his style.

Regarding tastes...you mean genre/capestuff, right?--I dig fun light action a lot...part of the problem as I see it with modern capes is they take themselves far too seriously...I mean, not even some of the most "literary" of alternative cartoonists take themselves as seriously as most cape creators, it seems! What with Morisson and his "manifesting our modern-day God's in reality BS"...though I can dig a classic beat 'em up, too...aside from the classic Baron/Rude Nexus arcs my fave capes of all time were the Wagner/Grant/Breyfogle 'Tec/Batman run and of course Year One and DKR...but the "grim n' gritty" stuff was done best first time around! Never cared for the O'Neill/Adams Bats, though. Also really enjoyed that dr.Strange mini The Oath, that was dope. Oh, Rachel Rising, I'm loving that as well (I know it's not big two though). A comic that sounded interesting to me was an Avatar book called Uber about superpowered humans changing the course of WWII, you familiar with that? It's Avatar so it'll be gnarly as hell, the concept intrigued me even though it's kinda a riff on the Zenith arc with Maximan and the Lloigor and that....btw did like Brubaker/Phillip's Sleeper, that was grim but had a nice twist to the "high concept". Oh holy shit Harvey James...does he go by James Harvey too, did Masterplasty?
>>80871948
I DO like Aja...recently won a cheap copy of Brubaker's autobio comic Lowlife, which he wrote AND drew himself for Fanta...remember reading a coupla issues when it came out, should be good.
>>
>>80871948
PS Is Daredevil Yellow Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb? Quite partial to Sale's art, remember him way back when from his work on an old indie called Billi 99

Is this book worth picking up? It has a lot of recommended Supes stories in it.
>>
>>80872887

yes, its part of the "color" series , its my second favorite DD book other than The Man Without Fear which i would have rec'd but JRjr has pretty scratchy art, which you said you didnt like.
>>
>>80873366

I haven't heard any griping about the other books from this series in past threads, so i cant think of any reason why they'd suddenly screw the pooch on the Supes one
>>
>>80873697
I wouldn't say scratchy, what I mean by that is the "inked with a sewing needle" look that Jim Lee's stuff has. But yeah JRJR stuff is a little over-rendered for my tastes. Enjoyed The Long Halloween and Superman For All Seasons, due to uh circumstances I din't have access to non cape comics and they were sequential art so I read 'em about three times each.
Have a great Sale interview from the print tcj where he talks about his Heroes work and stuff, his influences etc, seems like a cool guy. Is it just me or does he have a strong kind of Year One Mazz influence in his stuff?

Bought and read the first Stumptown collection by Rucka. Book is really well put together, great quality, but man it sure is a disappointment. I felt like I was reading a worse version of Alias. I never thought I'd read something by Rucka and go "Bendis did this better."
>>
>>80873366
>>80873828
one criticism I read was that the stories they pick reflect the dc's sort of ashamed of the character in a way. most of the stories collected are "sad superman" stories

"But thematically? There’s not a lot of variety. They focus overwhelmingly on one idea of how they want you to see Superman, and the Superman they present is a depressed sad sack who never wins.
That’s the Superman they want you to read about, and that is baffling."

>>
>>80892590
Deluxe is unlikely but if it sells well in trade then I can see an Absolute down the road. If it does REALLY well.
>>
>>80892590
They only give absolutes to seminal works not by sales, batman year one's trade was a best seller since it got put out the first time like a decade ago and it is just barely getting an absolute. Whether Omega Men gets one is whether people care about it in a decade or so. Just look at Jeff Lemire's Animal Man, that was one of the highest praised books from the launch of the new 52 and it hasn't even gotten a deluxe. DC is picky as hell when it comes to certain collections.

>>
>>80931801
Its not the most traditionally "Dredd" story there is. The most common advice is start with Complete Case Files 05, as it has some of the first truly essential Dredd stories collected in one place. If over 30 years of uninterrupted continuity seems too daunting you could Start at the Beginning of the IDW Dredd series, at Volume 1. Although IDW JD is considered by many to be inferior, the Year One mini, as well as the Anderson mini get a lot of praise

Sure. It's short, self-conclusive and fairly unconnected to the rest of the series, so there's no previous reading required or anything.

I have to admit, I wasn't thrilled with their size after noticin the small Nexus omnis in the last thread.
But, now that I have the books, I have to admit, it's not so bad.
The art is still enjoyable. The text is not small at all. It doesn't strain my eyes.

Fantagraphics is a good entry
>>
>>80955151
Don't you think it's strange how Fanta's catalogue is all over the place at the moment? I kind of fear they're losing their identity as a publisher a little bit...I mean, publishing Lucy Knisley comics? The most bland, middle-brow, mediocre cartoonist there is, that surprised the fuck out of me. They used to really have an identity, the hateful, misanthropic wise-asses (Bagge, Clowes, Crumb, Laban,Ryan, Altergott etc), the cool experimental foreigners (Max, Igort), classic newspaper stuff (Nemo--talking about the magazine here not Little Nemo) and the cool "literary" types like Ware, Los Bros...oh and the "surrealists" for want of a better term like Woodring etc.
Now it seems a bit like they're trying to be "all things to all men"--dunno if it's Eric Reynolds effective "replacement" of Kim Thompson but he was commissioning stuff before KT died....Now they're putting out all the stuff I mentioned, PLUS Fort Thunder-style experimentalism, plus fucking MOR recipe comics...and some really good newish talent, too. AND sucking up comics from dead publishers! >tfw Kramers Ergot is now on Fantagraphics---bet that won't last long, Sammy Harkham's a well-known contrary hateful bastard (helluva cartoonist though)
>>
>>80955471
I'm fine with them publishing more variety because if they don't publish those comics, who will?
>>
>>80955544
They always published a healthy variety of stuff, I think they're weakening their reputation by publishing sub-par shit. Thankfully it's not THAT much but still a worrying trend.

>Cartoonist Matt Furie’s deadpan comics showcase slacker roommates Andy, Brett, Landwolf, and Pepe in a series of comical vignettes combining laconic psychedelia, childlike enchantment, drug-fueled hedonism, and impish mischief. The perpetually insouciant glaze of his characters belie the sharp verbal and visual wit of Furie, who delivers a stoner classic for the Tumblr generation. In fact, Furie’s wildly popular teenage weirdoes became an overnight internet sensation when Pepe the Frog was widely adopted by users of 4chan and remixed ad infinitum from there (including uses by pop stars like Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry), giving Boy’s Club built-in recognition with many. A spiritual cousin to Simon Hanselmann’s Megahex and Joán Cornella’s Mox Nox, Boy’s Club’s sense of humor will especially resonate with fans of stoner comedies and black humor.

It should be, it's a big part of Vulcan becoming Emperor. I'd expect it to contain at least that, Emperor Vulcan, Road to War of Kings, War of Kings, Nova vol 4 (forgor the issue numbers, 19 to 20-something), and GotG 7 - 19. Maybe Secret Invasion: Inhumans but that might be a stretch.

>>80974359
It was the first experience of Skinner. I could be blind nostalgia talking but I always loved that issue, from him killing his wife and kid and wearing their flesh as a memorial to blaming Blaze for all of it.

Not at all, the plot being a war between the Shi'ar and the Kree is interesting though. War of Kings was my introduction to The Inhumans and I liked them

>>
>>80974565
No. He's pretty awful actually. The surrounding characters(Ronan, Gladiator, Inhumans, GotG) are what make it a good event. Vulcan is basically just evil guy with infinite power who is evil for no reason.
>>
>>80974614
As a big Ghost Rider fan I have to ask you is 2099 any good?
>>
>>80974729
It's been years since I read it but it's really just Ghost Rider in name and design only. I'd say give it a read, although it does change halfway through. I wish I had all the issues so I could get it bound. I know it had a lot to do with Doom 2099 towards the ends.

Wish I collected those better.
>>
>>80974663
>>80974694
Damn. That is such a shame about Vulcan. I never read any of his tales b/c he seemed exactly how you describe him back when the series came out monthly. I wanted to think otherwise. Maybe someone will bring him back to life (inevitably eventual) and do something interesting with him. What was he? Telepath/telekinetic? How did Sinister not get his hands on that guy?

>>80974671
Yeah, thanks. I saw this on the amazon listing. It's an impressive collection. A lot to it.
>>
>>80974694
Yeah, Vulcan was just a whiny bitch most of the time Scott Summers decided to forget about where Alex at least felt like he needed to clean up that mess after Deadly Genesis. Not a necessity to read for this story, but I have it as part of my cosmic shelf because it directly leads to Vulcan existing (but then again, I have House of M there as well).
>>
>>80974898

>>80974898
>How did Sinister not get his hands on that guy?
Xavier made it that he never existed essentially. Wiped him from the face of the earth. Because he and 4 others "died" on Krakoa before Chuck sent in Wolverine and his group to be potential fodder.
>>
>>80974898
I think he's the long lost brother of Havok and Cyclops. His powers are basically whatever you can think of. He survives some insane shit that just borders on the ridiculous, but is defeated in a pretty badass moment.
>>
>>80975046
The thing that kills him literally cracks open reality. Well assuming he was still alive by the time of the explosion, he was missing a good bit of his face
>>
All this talk of Vulcan and the Summers in general has me wondering: what are the best Havok Alex Summers tales? Where are they collected? How cool is he in War of Kings?
>>
>>80975230
>How cool is he in War of Kings?
Havok in space is the coolest he's ever been

I also liked him in the 90's Peter David X-Factor

Anyone?

I only read the firs or first two storylines but I enjoyed them. I'd say it's worth it at least for the first dozen issues, it was part of that like with Legends of The Dark Knight where creators were given a little bit of freedom to do the Batman stories they want.

What are the most important DC trades to get from the
Golden age
Silver age
and
Bronze age?
>>
I just cancelled my order for the Fletcher Hanks books (because the first book was unavailable, even though it was listed on the website as "in stock").
Glad I did since I just discovered that the hardcover is coming out later this year, collecting the two trades.

>buy The Art of Harvey Kurtzman from used bookstore
>two pages cut out of it

My fault for not looking, but damn. The interesting bit is that there was another copy of the book there, with THREE pages cut out in the same area.

I did get most of my money back and got to keep the book anyway, because they would've had to put them both on the clearance rack.
>>
>>80984812
Happened to me with Vol 1 of Ms. Marvel from 2000 something. Issue one is missing 10 pages just ripped out. I could have saved myself a few bucks if I better looked at the book. I scrutinize everything now.

I would buy but it is $60 there! I'll wait for the restock elsewhere.

As another anon said there's basically no reprints of bronze age material other than Neal Adams batman that was destroyed by recoloring. There's a trade of his green lantern green arrow that I think hasn't been fucked with though. That's pretty much it for bronze age other than some of the creator-centric Batman HCs that they've been doing.

For silver age they started reprinting some series like Flash silver age and justice league silver age. I don't really like that stuff much but the flash would probably be best or Superman if they ever do one.

Same thing for golden age. I'd stay away from the batman one unless you're a huge fan. The Superman one might be good and I'm anticipating a Wonder Woman one at some point which I would get for sure.
>>
>>80979894
The original manga, right? Someone else (coulda been you!?) mentioned that last time I visited here regularly.
>>
>>80988084
>>80986987
there are reprints of New teen titans, ostrander suicide squad and some wonder woman stuff.
Gl/GA is probably the most important bronze age stuff.
>>
>>80988437
Those are all good, I forgot they had NTT reprints, that's my favourite series. Suicide squad is modern age though, so is the Wonder Woman if you're talking about the Perez run
>>
>>80988084
>>80988936

I also forgot about the Superman whatever happened to the man of tomorrow tpb. That also collects the other Alan Moore Superman stuff

Anybody got the hardcover issues of DK3? If so how are they? Do they include the mini comics inside them as well as the normal floppy issues? I'm interested in picking them up if that's the case

Also my recently re-organized shelf because I'm relatively new at collecting and need validation for my choices.
