It would be really gritty but in that kinda safe and bland fritz way, the race relations would be much more ham-fisted and one species would be stereotypically black. Nick is a drug dealin, free-wheelin, (jet-flyin, limousine-ridin) fox who almost gets shot by new and crooked cop Judy Hopps, who's using her newfound badge to go extrajudicial in order to overcompensate for being the only rabbit on the force, but Nick convinces her he just want's out man, and is enlisted by her to help take down the kingpins one by one. It's not that they were afraid to use the original script, it's the fact that it's a Disney movie and the most feel-good ending for the original script they could come up with was "Nick leaves the city forever." It was pretty dystopian and not really much of a disney film.
