Hey /co/, a buddy and I put out a comic back in the start of May 2015 and we've gotten pretty deep in it so I figured I'd storytime it here. It's an urban fantasy story about three small time practitioners in Quincy, Massachusetts who have to deal with the re-emergence of some unsavory elements.

The power level is very street-level, and the art picks up after the first two "issues" which we had made prior to May. Writing got better too. We're nearing the end of the first big story arc in general, and should be on to the second by May of 2016.

If you want to read at a non-sluggish pace we're at thesisters-comic.com. This is the writer posting. Can field pretty much any questions. We're also doing a sketchbook that we'll probably put out at the end of the first arc, should anyone give a crap or have a request.

You're not incorrect. It'll get better. The initial two parts were done in like...2014? Time improves things. Makes them less jagged. But the old stuff couldn't just get thrown out.

Part of the mentality in not going back and redoing it is that there's a skill improvement every few months; so earlier works will always look bad. Better not to be caught in the vicious cycle.

And, like the writer mentioned in the original post, we're doing a sketchbook. Concept sketches that never saw the light of day, original designs, plus some goofy stuff people request.

So if you've got any specific ideas like "B's work outfit" or "The Sisters: In Space", I'll add em to the To-Draw list.

Here's one that was meant for the start of Chapter 7. I said "Have Connor and Erin make out", the writer said no, and went with the discussion about Friends.

>Also, swearing loses its effectiveness when everyone does it, unless your goal is make everyone seem crass
That's kind of the point, you elitist cuntlobe. "Vulgar" language literally means the way the common man talks. It's supposed to lose its 'effectiveness' at 'offending' because it was never meant to offend to begin with. Just be normal and express emotions like anger and crassness (aka comfort, as opposed to stressful rigidity and controlled behavior). Emotions 'proper' sorts are obliged to pretend they don't feel.

Fair enough, I realize I come into this from a weird position. Child of a teacher in a crappy little town, so a lot of my "adults I knew" were very much "do as I say, not as I do" and had to put on the separating of teacher-mode and their real selves. My favorite English teacher once wrote a kid up for cursing him out, and as the kid got taken to the office he muttered that said kid was a "fucking piece of work."

Cursing itself does lose its effectiveness if everyone does it, and in small towns like those I've grown up in and have inhabited on and off; it's how everyone talks unless they're putting on a face. It might be crass, it likely is; but it's sort of a cultural quirk I've found to be true of growing up in with the big Irish-side of my family.

But to each their own, it is a problem; I'm aware of it. Just sort of something to sort out at times. Lotta people curse as the Oxford Comma, or as a punctuation. In speech it is often overlooked, especially among friends; in writing it can look weird.

I understand the complaint though, and I'm sorry if that made you dislike the project.

>>79028804
>Kinda cute.
We haven't really gotten to her, because she and Julius were a decade ago back in Brooklyn. Tish's situation is "crystals are powerful" and Julius is just a bowling alley employee who happened to accidentally get involved in magic.

Julius will be fun when he shows up again. Sort of a burnt-out Scott-type role.
>>

I was hoping to run into you, Brian. Beatrice has been steadily getting fatter and fatter. She's so fucking thick now, she'd probably have trouble fitting into doors. Compare the early panels to how she looks like now; especially noticeable after she exits the strip club to go shooting. Yowza.
>>
>>79030966
Artist tagging in again.

That was always sorta how she was meant to look, it was just a matter of my art-chops catching up.

The idea behind her design was basically: She's "trailer-trash hot". At most, like a 7 or 8 outta 10. I mean, B's a small-town stripper, that usually doesn't facilitate top-shelf workers.

But that being said, she's at as thick as originally intended, so doors won't be an issue.
>>
>>79030966
It makes for a pretty powerful and visceral image, doesn't it? You look at a picture like >>79025904 's second panel and.. well, pic related

I gotta admit, it helps me tell them apart. That was a much bigger prob earlier. I mean yeah she has the tatts but they look so unnatural I can't ever not think of them as clothing or makeup or jewelry or something.
>>
Amazing.
These dudes write some really unlikable realistic characters.
They're all terrible, except for Scott and maybe Douglas.
>>
>>79031271
it's kinda like the dark flipside of Bob's Burgers, if that makes any sense.
>>
>>79031187
Oh yeah, I can totally get that. Earlier on I was confident that their body shapes would set em apart. The issue comes when you don't see their full body. Then it's a bit of a toss up.

As for the tattoos, again, totally. Canonically, she got em done at her friend's house with their 'fancy new tattoo gun' when she was like 15. It's briefly mentioned in a comic we did back in like 2013 (http://petarvee.tumblr.com/post/46781486398/the-alice-incident-finished-finally-cleaned-up).

Which, is still sorta mildly canon and in need of a real revisit. Especially because I'm not working with ink and brush anymore.

The great thing about being dead is that memories will now color the core of his character, and those are always biased; often in favor of an idea rather than the truth.

>Douglas
Dude's actually paying attention. I like that. Everyone else seems to be wrapped up in their own lives, which is ok in the youngest girl, but I don't know about the rest of them.

>Scott
Dude said he was the one who started that society, because most of them wouldn't look out for each other. That, and he was open and was teaching her magic.
I did like his little speech about money though.
>>
This was cool. Definitely picking it up.
Question: was that Irish spirit thing actually good intentioned and they just didn't care? Or did it likely have ulterior motives. I assume the latter but the former would be pretty funny.
>>
>>79031937
Those are fair points. I can see how Douglas as being the guy who pays attention makes him likable as a character.

Part of the goal when writing the Sisters was to make them people who are very much wrapped up in their own lives; they don't really have a threat to rally against so there's no point in going all X-Men or anything. And being magical just draws unwanted attention from nasty shit anyway, so no point in going all Harry Dresden when you've got bills to pay. The people who delve into the world of using magic to get what they want suffer; Scott (though his was more constant failed attempts at love), or Conrad (he's a shapeshifting serial killer), and Doug too on some level though we don't see it yet.

So while the Sisters are sort of the focal characters, the idea is that these aren't people who can magic a way to fix their problems; they're people who are going to suffer through loss and tragedy and some good stuff too; because they pay their taxes like everyone else. Some of them cheat a little, but they're just Joe Average save for the magical bullshit.

>Liked his speech on money
Thank you! A lot of people I've had read this didn't think he had any right to complain, when it sort of fits his character to just be alienated by sorta good things; because Scott's in a way, always fucking up when he has someone relying on him. Julius, Tina, and Guy not being around in the Society or his life is intentionally brought up; as is sort of the failed romance with Peebs (Percival/Perry at the time) or sort of having a date with Erin because "maybe there's a dick involved." Money, like damn near anything else, alienates people.

And if you get that alienation in early, its hard to figure out how to make real bonds.

>Gross realistic people who are good inside.
I can see that. Thanks. That actually means a lot.
>Dat Baby.
I still think that baby is hilarious to look at.

And that's it for me. I'm hitting the bricks. Thank you all for reading.

>Irish Spirit thing.
Generally speaking, anything spiritual has ulterior motives. "Scorned Son of the Na Suil" sort of implies it was born of Balor's ripped out eye; so not great. But it probably would've been far more benign than anything Beatrice ever sold her shit to.

I'd say it was probably a mix of good intentions, rebuffed for the fact that they're Americans and it wrecked Liam's old beach house.

Thanks for picking it up, we appreciate it.

>not X-Men or Dresden Files
I didn't think about it that way. Yeah, that's a good idea, and now that I think about it, it's done very well.
Good explanation on all if it. Might post it on your site somewhere.

I know the feeling. Got a call one day that a friend's brother had killed himself, and we were going to meet at another friend's house to keep first friend company. I get to other friend's house and, well, they didn't get the memo yet and said I looked like I'd seen a ghost. When the calling friend arrived without warning, second friend was so confused and went outside with them to ask the deal. Those were a very odd few days.
