Glad you think so. Hopefully the non-linear chronology doesn't throw too many people off - my RL test audience had completely missed all the hints I'd thrown in and had no idea what was going on.

Anyway, I think I actually got this page into a viewable state even though the background in panel 2 is a bit of a mess.

I'd worry about having them turn into poseless black blobs if you pose them with their limbs in front of their bodies.

Lol, technically she's from a children's book. Wasnt sure if I should include her.

Aw man, Aerin's been on hiatus for a year and a half now. Technically, I can't post it here, since my writer owns 50% of Aerin intellectually, and he'd prefer to keep it off 4chan. But I would definitely love to get back on this. Maybe even restart some of it.
When I had AerinComic.com, it just felt like I was posting it to no one, so my creative energy on that just got sapped.

Our colorist did a great job though.

The (hopefully) final version of page 2. Penciller has yet to OK it before upload, and he's not happy about the green splash on the bottom left panel (character colours that go on their uniforms being used as dynamic intro backgrounds).

I like the lurid rainbow, but I get why he's feeling uneasy about it. Thoughts?

The Sisters Update: 3-Pager.
Priorities are had, games are played, and Craig is actually setting some very healthy boundaries. Because if you're in a relationship you shouldn't leave someone hanging when you're hurting; especially if they can help.

Maybe not help so much against an evil wizard; but that's life.

http://tapastic.com/episode/263654
http://thesisters-comic.com/

Also fixed up the archive on the main site. And going to storytime the whole fucking thing tomorrow, because why not. We're far enough in. Maybe not far enough in this issue, but far enough in general.

Work's kicking my ass. How're you guys doing?
>>
>>79001213
it's sad to me how anti-cling our society seems to be. as if we're turning japanese or something. People act like it's intrinsically kind to give someone space or leave them out of things when you're hurting. I'll take aaany excuse to pour out my copious sympathy, man. You can come to me when you stub your toe.
>>
>>79001213
Can't complain.

>>
>>79001213
Busy. I want to work on my webcomic but I can't really focus on it until i finish these two porn comic commissions. I'm also gonna storytime what little bit I have done of my webcomic sometime tonight for feedback and stuff.
>>
>>78993357

>>78993645
I always see you posting photographs of cour comic here; do you upload the finished versions somewhere else?

>>79001213
And going to storytime the whole fucking thing tomorrow, because why not. We're far enough in.

I was thinking of doing that as well sometimes soon

I think I'm far enough into the comic that people can give their general impression of the writing, among other things. Plus since the comic in on hiatus ATM I figured "why not?"
I'm just afraid that it'll come out as purely shilling
>>
What I was working on. I had about half of chapter storyboarded out, and picking random panels to complete each day.

I probably should research a bit more about the tropes that appear in the magical girl genre, because I can probably use it in the part of the storyboard that cames up.

For reference I bought a copy of the zodiac star force issue 1... it was the impetus for me to restart my comic, because I think I can do better than that. I actually got the comic itself so I can get a sense of what people are looking for nowadays, but it turn out wasn't as useful as I had hoped. To put it charitably, this comic just wasn't for me, the art, the story, the characters. And I write my own story for people like me.

I wasn't sure what i was thinking.

by necessity, plastic-on-plastic is different from graphite/metal on paper. it takes a lot of getting used to and it may never have quite the same level of perfect input, but it's worth it for things being digitized instantly. You just have to zoom in for the fine details whereas on paper with a pencil you didn't have to zoom

the pen tools aren't opaque? what? or do you mean transparency, and you're that anon from before who confuses the two.

in any case do you mean the look of the lines being more natural and less artificial, or the strokes looking more natural? because the latter is accomplished by making a lot of long and fast strokes and just erasing or undoing the bad ones.. plus a lot of practice. the former is just brush settings (and i think the tool to use in that case IS the brush, with flow turned up all the way)

Yes but it's a whole different process. With Manga Studio, you have to go into your materials and mess around with your brush tip when SAI just had a drop down menu that's a little easier and less finite to mess with. But that's just because I work predominantly in SAI. TL:DR: Yes.

yes but what I meant was, 25 percent height and 25 percent width?? or 50 percent in both directions, meaning 25 percent of the AREA of the original. Because that's what I do.
25 percent of height and also of width means the total is 1/16th the area of the original.. which I don't even know the percent for. I guess it'd be .25 times .25.. which is something like .06-ish

For storytelling/composition: It's Sophie Campbell's Wet Moon all the way. Though recently Bryan Lee O'Malley's newish book "Seconds" hit me right in the brain.

For Character Design:
Genndy Tartakovksy (Mostly Samurai Jack and Clone Wars), Alex Toth, and recently just a bit of Steven Universe. Andrew Maclean's Headlopper and Apocalyptigirl are also fantastic for designs or general mark-making.

Backgrounds: I dig Kevin Dart and Elle Michalka a whole bunch.

Right, I just spent about four hours trying to flesh out some of the fictional countries I made up, and this is much bullshit harder than it sounds. Do you have ANY idea the sheer amount of detail that goes into making a nation? Even in a broad sense, there's so much crap that defines a society, its government, what kind of buildings they use, what they eat, what they do for fun, cultural rituals, the actual size of the place, the cities and towns, the branches of government, the actual people in charge, the economy, government policy, population and demographics, geological location, relationship with other nations, what's considered normal and what's taboo, basic etiquette, and a hundred other things. And keep in mind that I swore to myself that I would never wholesale copy a real world country, a decision I'm starting to regret.

So anyone got any tips? The story is sort of a world tour kind of deal, so it's actually pretty important that I define all these cultures. It's just that so is a bit of a pain in the ass.

My influences are diverse, mostly because I transitioned different phases in my life, my current work is pretty much getting back to my initial influences, with local comic writers and artists like Robin Wood and Carlos Vogt. I love the work produced by those two, and I aimed for something like that. Considering my current work is kind of biographic, I wanted to do something easier to relate to. A kind of story that is not made for just laughs, but for those who enjoy the little things in life. (pic related)

Question though, is this a world unified under one culture or one of many different cultures?
I'd love to help you with this if I can. I'm currently world-building this super large project called Ardras, it might be good for us to bounce questions off one another.
>>

>Question though, is this a world unified under one culture or one of many different cultures?
Many different cultures. The whole "planet with one culture" thing annoys me to no end, since that's extremely unlikely to ever happen anywhere. People don't agree on how to live even within the same group.

>I'm currently world-building this super large project called Ardras, it might be good for us to bounce questions off one another.
Sure. Judging by your map(which I am jealous of, since I can't draw maps for shit), Ardras is a country, yes?
>>
>>79037992
Ardras is a pangea like continent, the countries are the different regions marked on the map.

So, lets start with the basics, what is the climate and terrain of each region in your world? Climate and terrain have a lot do with shaping your culture.

CHILLREND-The Isolationist Nation

Chillrend is the isolationist nation that refuses to join Aristolia's trade network, preferring to depend on its own hardiness to survive. Located in the northern mountains of Ardras, part of the mountain range known as The Spine, life is much more difficult in the cold snow and rocky mountains, but the denizens of Chillrend persevere. Dense forests, iron mines, and silver mines, make up what is known as Chillrend, which is known for its fierce warriors, whose weapons are made from the very silver and iron that makes agriculture so difficult there. From a young age, Chillrendian children are taught how to survive, many do not grow into adulthood. People in this nation do not believe in charity, and are insulted when offered something that is not theirs,if you desire something, then you must take it. To be given something for nothing in return is considered a sign of weakness, and that you are unfit to survive, it is the Chillrendian way. Some other cultures see this as barbaric, but Chillrendians care little for the opinions of lesser nations, and have grown strong, despite their circumstances. As a rite of passage, children of this country are left out in the wilderness for days to fend for themselves, when they conquer their trials, they are accepted as adults into society. However, many of this country's leaders wish to seek out warmer climates, and have turned their eyes south, and have set in motion to conquer the lesser nations of Ardras. Can they be stopped? Or will the world leaders know the true power of the icy fist of the north?
>>
>>79038453
Leader(s): Five Clan Leaders
Motto: "If you desire something, then you must take it."
Main Export: Does not participate in trade
Main Import: Does not participate in trade
Military: Very powerful, full of hardened warrior who have persevered against the harsh elements.
Economy: Very powerful, isolationist nation, has turned to the sea for food.
Religion: Believe they are descendants of an ancient ice dragon who rests atop The Eye, the highest peak in Chillrend.
Ecology: Barren and cold but with dense forests in the southern and eastern regions, home to deer and other woodland creatures.
Architecture: Wooden and stone huts, lumber is an important and vital resource, and most of their buildings are made from it.

Cities:
Bloodrash- The capital of Chillrend, led by Clan Leader Herashes, the mighty daughter of the snow, known for her mighty axe, who cleaved a gargantuan bear in two. Bloodrash is situated at the mouth of an icy river leading out into the northern ocean. It is known as the birthplace of the mighty nation, whose people are said to have descended from the mountain known as The Eye.

The Eye- A small town high in the mountains of Chillrend, considered sacred ground by some, it is said only the wise may enter this place, and commune with the dragon spirit that guards its icy peaks. It is lead by Clan Leader Harkon, the wise old man of winter, whose mighty staff called forth the ice dragon from his slumber to impart the greatest wisdoms upon him.

Timberest- A town hidden in the dense forests of Chillrend, led by the Clan Leader Herof, the agile young son of the forest, whose mighty spear drove away the maddened beasts who threatened to overrun the village, it is best known for supplying the lumber that is much needed for constructing homes and towns in the north.
>>
>>79038453
Icehammer- A town on the northernmost point of the world, it overlooks the great icelands of the north, where no man would survive. It is led by Clan Leader Heracule, the hardy father of fortune, whose mighty hammer cracked open the silver veins of the mountains, and brought riches and wealth to the land.

Coldshore- A town on the western coast of the nation, led by Clan Leader Hermesa, the frigid mother of ice, whose mighty longsword drove back the invaders from the sea, this town is known for its whales and fish, and supplies the nation with most of its food.

So lets take a look at what we've got so far.
So we've got four major powers.

Aquatic creatures living underwater. Are they sentient? If they are, do they have architecture? What do they eat? Who holds the power? How does their environment affect their culture? Are there unique terrain features such as trenches or coral reefs? What do they think is "beautiful?"

A desert theocracy. What god or gods rule their pantheon? How do they affect the life of the everyday citizen? What about nobles? Are there nobles? What is the class heirarchy? Who gets to eat first? Desert terrains are harsh environments, how do the people deal with the dangers of their environment?

A militaristic empire in the mountains. Why are they militaristic? Are they seeking new resources? Did they move into the mountains because of certain circumstances? Have they always been there? How did they come to be living there? Is it cold in these mountains? Or is it more like the mountains and hills of England? Grassy and wet. Who do they see as their foes, who are their allies?

A tribal confederacy in the lower depth swamps. What are the terms of their confederacy? Are these different races making one unified organization? Or are they the same race, but with different viewpoints? How has living in the swamps affected their lifestyle? What do they eat?

And lastly, how do these regions interact? Many early civilizations cultures and religions are based on the heavens, the sky above them. What role does the gas giant play in their religions? Are they aware that the gas giant is a celestial body? Or is it something more to them? Does the gas giant eclipse between the moon and the sun? What do they call these long periods of darkness and how do they react to them?
Do these regions hate eachother? Do they trade? Are they all vying for power? What is their purpose behind fighting or aiding one another?

These are all questions you dont have to answer immediately if you can't. But food 4thought

As for Clan Leader Herashes, well, so long as you like getting your dick ripped off and fed to hungry bears, and then being tied up and serving as her fuck boi, then yeah, you'll be fine.

>Aquatic creatures living underwater. Are they sentient?
The Dratzi are indeed sapient, and at cyberpunk levels in fact. They kinda look like a combination of Zoras from The Legend of Zelda, and the Asari from Mass Effect.

>If they are, do they have architecture?
Their architecture is usually carved out of the sides of trench walls, and the side"walks" only exist to put stuff down on. And cities and towns are layered, with each set of buildings sitting on top of each other(since they can just swim, this saves a lot of space).

And before any one asks, they go up to the surface to smelt metal. Which they use to make highly advanced submarines(they're aquatics, of course they have better marine vehicles).

>What do they eat?
Fish and various plants. I had this idea about how they'd have boiler devices to cook with.

>Who holds the power?
They have a United Nations analogue, but it doesn't get much done. There are at least three different factions attempting world take over through political means; the aforementioned empire, a tech corporation, and a mercenary police society.

>How does their environment affect their culture?
Not sure. There's a dumb old joke where someone pretends to be falling. OH! Most of the animals in the world are absurdly dangerous monsters(including the herbivores in some cases), so they're not terribly fond of them.

>Are there unique terrain features such as trenches or coral reefs?
I don't really see the need to come up with any alien terrain, since our own ocean has plenty of stuff to draw on.

>What do they think is "beautiful?"
I suppose the dratzi appreciate function over form.

See, I have a fair amount of what I want this world to be worked out, it's the finer details I have a problem focusing on.
>>
how do you find the motivation to keep writing if everything has already been done before and every idea to ever be written is just a trope listed on tvtropes?

it's quite depressing really
>>
No worries my man and/or lady, that's what we're here for. The trick to focusing in on the finer details is to ask more questions in response to your own answers. It's what I like to think of as the "Why" challenge. To every answer you give yourself, ask, "why."

So these Dratzi sound pretty cool. Pretty much mecha-mermaid people. A thought for you, instead of going to the service, they could take advantage of submerged caves and the air pressure in them like pic related.
Being a race that is so isolated from the the other three, I wouldnt be surprised to see them being aloof to the problems of the "surface world." Unless of course, they are ambition amphibians, and seek to conquer the surface world. But, I would be surprised if the y wanted that, since all their needs seem to be met under the sea. (Cue Little Mermaid's "Under Da Sea")

That being said, they seem like the intellectually superior species, having made robotics and engineering.

Keep asking yourself questions, its the key to building a richer and vividly detailed world.

That being said, if you have any questions about Ardras, I'd love to answer them. Not for vanity's sake, but so that I can build it up more as well. Sometimes other people can think up questions you'd never think of.

There are still a lot of life lessons that haven't been enunciated well enough for the public to accept.

For example, Inside Out is the most mainstream source of getting people to understand what was essentially already said by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HbYScltf1c

So your main goal, really, is to have your work be about something. And figuring out a way to slyly get around to the fact without beating your audience over the head with it.

You can summarize what Inside Out is about with "It's okay to be sad sometimes; Don't turn it away just because"

I thought of that as well, but I'm not terribly sure if the science of that works. Although if it doesn't, it's not that big a deal. It's not like I'm going for the really hard end of the sci-fi spectrum here.

As for the surface world, I had toyed with the idea of surface people, but the common sentiment that underwater stories are "boring" is a major motivator.

Actually, I did have a question about Ardas. Are the people humans? Cause what you've described seems like a standard low fantasy scenario. (Not saying that's bad, for the record. As long as you pull it off well, it doesn't matter.)

I guess you don't have to know every aspect of the science of it, but underwater caves do in fact exist.
Remember that the Dratzi are only one aspect of this world. Depending on your MC and the direction your narrative takes, the whole underwater world can be amazing, because remember, everything you make is alien to your reader.

For Ardras, it consists of humans, sub-humans (subhumans being human but with special abilities) , and other races.
The races are as follows by region

Aristolia- home to many races, but mostly human

Lithos-sub-human, highly adept at magical abilities

Chillrend- sub-human, very strong and hardy

Oceos'lo'kai- human (however some are born subhuman, with enhanced swimming abilities), known for their thrill-seeking lifestyle

Garconga- human, live in communion with nature, some magical abilities

Drylands- non human lizard like race, called the Tokage, interspread with other humans (mostly lowlives, theives, and thrill seekers)

Fayearth- non human, proud, intelligent, and aloof owl-like people. They hardly are ever seen outside of their own nation.

Fervor- non human, marble statue like people made of stone, they value beauty and valor above all things

Xervanos- non human- terrifying, black coal like humanoids, they have only recently come into this world from the underground mere centuries ago.

>Depending on your MC and the direction your narrative takes, the whole underwater world can be amazing, because remember, everything you make is alien to your reader.
Heh. Actually, remember that mercenary police society? The main characters are members. See, the world has recently gotten out of a devastating world war that ended because -something- made six several kilometer craters in the ground. So the Global Security Agency offered their services as police to ease the budgets of countries trying to get themselves back together.

>For Ardras, it consists of humans, sub-humans (subhumans being human but with special abilities) , and other races.

Y'know, I can't imagine the so-called sub-humans are terribly fond of that label. Is this implying some prejudice in the land?

Hm, the more I hear about your world, the more I feel its a lot like your typical low fantasy realm, only sped up into the future by 800 years or so.
Mecha mermaids, Global Security Force, all that. Its definitely an interesting setting!
That being said, I figure the GSA is a sort of neutral party between the four powers? And our MCs are representative of each nation, bringing their own unique culture and world view to the table, which will certainly give us some interesting character interaction?
At any rate, this is a post-war setting, so I'm sure tensions between nations are still pretty high?
What is the nature of this mysterious crater? Does the narrative revolve around it as a mysterious event?

In regards to Ardras, the relations are all over the map. Let's see here.

Aristolia is the mercantile superpower, and the central hub of all trade. It tries to maintain friendly relations with all the other nations, most humans are accepting of other races, since meeting all these other people are a part of every dray life.

Lithos was once a larger region, but in the past it lost most of its territory to Aristolia in a war. It's now pretty much Aristolia's political bitch. While most Lithosian people are content with the peace they have under Aristolia's thumb, there are some families that have an intense hatred of humans. There is a rising cult following looking to reinstate "Old Lithos"

Drylanders are mostly looked down upon as smugglers, thieves, and all around bad people the Tokage in particular. In Tokagian lore, they were even rejected by their own patron god. You can't trust them as far as you could throw them, but god damn do they make a good business partner. (As long as you keep an eye out for a knife in the back)

Essebü (the owl people) are hardly ever seen, so when you do see one, people tend to stare and marvel at their appearance alone. They are however, cold and arrogant to all others.

(2000 character limit, will continue in new post)
>>
>>79041340
Pic related, a gang of Tokage thugs

The Essebü are in high tensions with the Tokage, whom they view with much contempt. Currently, the Tokage capital of Goldhaven in boring tunnels into their sacred mountain (which hosts the Elder Council of the Essebü) in their gold mining operations. This is making it harder and harder for the Essebü to simply stand by and watch the world from their isolated mountain peaks.

Garcongans view outsiders pretty much on the same level as Hawaiians view tourists. Loud, annoying, and they can't wait for them to leave. Their tropical paradise of a region invites all sorts of trouble. However, being a peaceful people, they won't go to war over it.
The locals will just give you the stink eye until you leave.

Xervanos and Fervor are at war. Xervanos now occupies what was once northern Fervor, however, their zealous conquest has laid much of the land in ruins. A Xervanosian and a Fervorian meeting outside of their regions are most assuredly going to end up fighting to the death, as they are both fierce warrior races.
Fervorians see other races as weaker and less beautiful with them, and will often come across as snooty.
Xervanosians however, are curious about the world, and enjoy new experiences, as they are considered a newly born race, who knew nothing but darkness before. They are very friendly to most other races.

Chillrend was pretty much already described. They see other races as weaker, and easily conquered. And rightly so, most of the other races of Ardras fear the raw might of a Chillrender. >>79041335

Finally, the people of Oceos'lo'kai. They are a fun loving group of people, very laid back and don't have any stigmas against anyone else. However, their thrill seeking lifestyle and their mostly sea-driven economy turns most of them into pirates. So most other races don't like them, they come off as irresponsible, lazy, and down right no good.

I suppose it is. I originally wanted to include magic, but I couldn't come up with a decent system, so I just kept it strictly cyberpunk.

>That being said, I figure the GSA is a sort of neutral party between the four powers?
There's more than four, but yes. They're mercenaries with their own agenda of of more or less replacing the ineffectual not-U.N. The MCs are local officers who believe in that cause, but also recognize the questionable stuff their superiors, and even themselves at times, get up to.

>Mecha mermaids, Global Security Force, all that. Its definitely an interesting setting!
Thank you! I like yours as well. Especially the idea of international trade apparently being a major focus.

>How do the different races view each other?
Well, the dratzi have different breeds like humans do. How they view each other depends on the culture. There's a socialist nation where prejudice is straight up illegal, while some countries still practice racial slavery. Most people don't really care though.

As for national relations, there's still some bad blood there. The war only ended like 50 years ago. Jhartaux and Druselcin are still taking shots at each other ever now and then. And at least one nation is STILL under a zero tolerance isolationist policy because they won't risk coming into contact with any of the weird shit left over from the war.

>Haha, but yes, Ardras originally started as a world for a home brew game of D&D that never came to be. I didnt want it to go to waste, so now we have this project.

>Scaler: Common in near-surface areas.

>Stalker: Common in deep trench areas.

>Wader: Common in coral reef areas.

>Chiller: Common low temperature areas.

>Trekker: Common in hot, desert areas.

Also, it probably doesn't matter, but I had the first Spyro the Dragon game in mind when I came up with these races.
>>
One time I ate a cricket.
>>
>>79042770
Hm, they definitely could use some work
Try looking into human cultures that reflect the values of each race, and pull inspiration from there,

For example, the Essebü are heavily influenced by ancient Sumerian culture, and reflectively "essebü" is the Sumerian word for "owl"

Ancient languages have all sorts of interesting ways of naming things. Look into them
>>
>>79043079
So, for example, instead of a 'chiller', they'd be a 'bard' (Arabic world for cold), and the people of Jhartaux could have a tradition of storytelling. Not a bad idea, I'll give that a shot.
>>
Sometimes it still surprises me how useless this place can be.
>>
>>79042770
yeah that sort of thing affects culture quite a bit. on earth, people in tropical areas barely/never invented agriculture because why bother? rich plantlife everywhere and huge animals in your way at every step. whereas the ones in desert areas bloomed very early in history because it was either that or die. (places that started tropical and BECAME deserts.. well shit) Then you have like... people surrounded by mountains had less to fear from outsiders and tended to develop cooperative, insular cultures, but over time they stagnate from lack of competition, while people in areas with lots of weak natural barriers (Forests, rivers, medium-sized hills) compete like mad and advance tremendously, but often have a late start depending which other cultures invaded them first. And that's just plain ol 'advancement'. there's like 15 other equally important categories of ways to judge a civilization, and they all have their own variables.
>>
>>79043258
Not a bad start, though the word "bard" has connotations with traveling singers and thespians.

There's a lot of fantasy stories that try to mix up racial and cultural development in new ways, and sometimes it makes a decent amount of sense.. like the people in Earthsea just happen to be browner, it's not as if they had sunnier areas and less sunny areas.. it's all sea. the author just likes brown people. Meanwhile, in Wheel of Time they had desert people described as being very pale and typically red-haired.. and it's like... in a fuckin desert? not an arctic steppe desert either, but a proper sunny hot sands desert.. jesus. not gonna work.
amusingly enough though they had no nudity taboo but instead had a taboo on people seeing them EAT.

Scribblehatch, I respect your work, but not the way you treat some people.
There's not enough talking done between webcomic artists, it's a fledgling industry with no road maps, and no brainstorms about how to "make it work." I feel like it's a step in the right direction. >>
>>79043555
I think disney said it best with the concept of the plausible impossible. it's not that something has to be true or even realistic, just believable. as long as the audience doesn't collectively think "well that could never happen" then you're fine. which is why generally fiction repeats what people THINK in cases where the truth is difficult to believe.
>>
>>79043622
red hair and pale skin are genetically linked. they both derive from basically a faulty version of melanin. It's like when you see an 'albino' animal that still has some faint yellow markings. they're still producing SOME kind of pigment, but a fucked up version.

but yeah that was a plausible taboo. that's what fun about fantasy and scifi, you can just imagine people ending up different fucked up ways, and it makes you reexamine your own thinking.

Out of curiosity, what kind of pirates are you planning on making them? Are they the romanticized charming rogues, or are these the modern style pirates? Because you may want to keep that in mind in how they relate to other groups. The 'dashing rogues" types disappeared because nations starting to get much stringer military protocol, so if any of your nations have any kind of martial prowess and strong law enforcement, the pirates are going to be bothersome flies at best. That way, at rest, it's like a kneecap, and when bent, it sort of fills in the 'missing area' in front of the knee (and gives them a good melee weapon for flying knee kicks)
but hey her shoulder and hip joints are just circles so obviously this doesnt have to be totally realistic engineering

Well I didn't want to go for the waifu in the first place. The design is based on soft edges and went through a lot of reiterations because of silhouette problems. She first had a stereotypical "hard" bobcut, then the "ears" which were a lot more horn-like then her final design. Since she's always meant to wear clothes I made the body more utilitarian than anything, the visible parts had to say "this is a robot", but they needed human movement range so I gave her those soft 'bellows' inside her arms and thighs that the forearm/leg tucks in when bent.
I want to express her personality through the clothes so it's kind of important that I get them right

Ever heard of Dragon Ball? It just wholesale ripped off Journey to the West for the first year and that's what formed the foundation of the series.

Shortly after that comic ended after ten years and worldwide critical acclaim and commercial success, another dude basically wholesale ripped off Dragon Ball's storytelling style for a comic book about pirates called One Piece and now he makes US$25 million a year on the most successful comic book in the history of the world.

But Toriyama and Oda aren't hacks. They're geniuses. And if you want to be a writer you god damn well better believe you are, too.
>>
>>79040032
Do not start thinking of things in terms of TVtropes, it poisons you as a writer. Focus on the theme and story as a whole.
>>
So I've got a problem: I'm afraid pissing off SJWs with my writing. How do avoid this if you go in to write fiction with a mindset of "write what you know" but all you know is just suburban white america and you don't feel comfortable writing about minorities out of fear of coming off disingenuous, or worse - offensive?
>>
>>79063048
Either you care about being PC and you do proper research to avoid the pitfalls, or you don't care about being PC in which case you shouldn't care what SJWs think.

I care to the extent that I don't want to upset someone just by creating something. I don't have any intention of insulting or offending people, but I know a thousand other authors don't as well, and regardless of what they do they fall victim of call out posts and shit talking because they wrote a story about two white guys. It's not that I don't care about minorities or women, it's more that they're such a rarity to my existence and experience that I feel I'm not /qualified/ to be the person to write about minorities or women.

I'm a straight white male from the suburbs of Boston, I don't have experience with LGBT issues. I don't hate gay people because of that, but as someone uneducated on topics involving gay issues I feel very uncomfortable writing about them. And I feel as though PC-centric folks expect you to take up that mantle as a creator, regardless of who you are, if you don't you're a shitty person. And then when you DO do it, and get it wrong, and offend someone, you're an even shittier person.

anyway typo fixes for the 10th panel: a lot* and let's*
Is the 11th panel supposed to be like, a weary sorta "such and such I said, this and that i said" as if to be repeating what you said and sarcastically regretting it? because if so the ellipsis doesn't work there.

>>79063048
In my opinion, anything you don't know about can be researched, so you have literally no obstacle that prevents you from adding variety in your work. Having said that, you should always try to write for yourself first, then the rest. makes the things you want to make, talk about the things you want to talk, and forget about external noise. Someone's offended? Boo-fucking-hoo.
Don't think of diversity as a checklist to fill, because that'll be even worse.
Unless you're working for someone else, you should only concern in writting things you like.

Heck, my current webcomic is based on the states and I've never been there. But I talked to friends over there about stuff I wasn't aware, and I can always count on my readership to help me when I screw up something with misinformation.

tl;dr: Write whatever the fuck do you want, unless there's a JUICY paycheck saying otherwise.
>>
I was wondering something, Is it ok to send an email to writers or artists you admire to ask for tips or tricks? I sometimes join art streams to chat with artists, but I don't get an answer from them, since they tend to focus on there work.

Also I recently joined a writing group where everyone brings in some of there work for critique. So I'm hoping that will help me improve my skills as a writer.
>>
>>79063322
If you don't agree with someone you shouldn't be afraid of their criticism.

If you don't think it's bad to make a comic about two white straight guys then you shouldn't care about the people who will be mad about it.

Besides, when people complain about lack of LBGT or non-white characters, they're mostly talking about big franchises that are commercially designed to target certain groups of people. only 16 year old nutjobs will get mad about a webcomic that just happens to be about white dudes.
>>
I've heard to get my comic to gain popularity I should also draw fan art. But what fan art should I draw that people would find easily? I usually feel like my fan art gets drowned out by the masses if I choose something too popular...
>>
>>79063878
Just draw fan art for stuff you like, don't make it into a chore.

Plus, people who enjoy the same things as you are more likely to enjoy your work, because you were probably inspired by those things somewhat.
>>
>>79052735
>how do you come up with or decide on the perfect names for your characters?

>>
>>79052735
Back in the day I used to fire up Championship Manager's 2001/02 editor, filter players by nationality and choose a name and surname from the thousands available. If I needed a female name, I'd google something.

Might not work for fantasy settings.
>>
>>79059681
A lot of your writing makes your characters look manic-depressive. Sora was all bubbly and happy to be back on the very last page and now she's SUPER SERIOUS and it just doesn't mesh. You did that earlier in the chapter with Annabeth nearly dying too.
>>
>>79061959
>It just wholesale ripped off Journey to the West for the first year and that's what formed the foundation of the series.

I wouldn't call it a ripoff. Dragonball just seemed to be Toriyama's own spin on the Journey to the West story, while adding in some outside elements so that it wasn't just a 1:1 retelling of the story.

It isn't like it was some secret that he was using that as a base. It's just that it quickly evolved into something completely different.

And Oda was heavily influenced by Toriyama, much like most Shounen Mangaka were. Oda is not even at all quiet about the fact that Toriyama and DB were huge influences.

It is completely different when the creator is open about what their inspiration or the base of their story is from.

It isn't like Disney, and how they ripped off Kimba with The Lion King, and then vehemently denying it, despite literally every ounce of evidence proving otherwise.

>>79049696
I like most of the story and general ideas I see from your strip whenever it gets posted here, but I really struggle with the 2x2 panel composition.

It just seems to rob your action scenes of their dynamic energy, with the panels so squarely uniform, and it makes simple talking bits like this feel weirdly off-beat...I don't know, maybe it's just that most comics seem to work to rules of three?

I can't put my finger on it, and I'm aware it might be a personal hang-up of mine rather than a legitimate criticism.

>>79054879
As another person doing a team based comic with strong colour identifiers, I really dig your work (only seen characters and group shots so far - am I missing anything?).

>>79052735
Like others have said, names just sounding right is perfectly legitimate.

Sometimes names that have too obvious meaning ('symbolic' or just flat out Dickensian descriptive) can detract from a character, acting as a reminder of their artificiality.

A good sounding name that isn't obviously meaningful can make for a much more credible person, allowing them to be defined for a variety of traits rather than being one-note easily defined characters.

I'm not more in favour of symbolic names or just good phonetic names, I think both are valid, though.

As you can tell from the character 'Shrimp-Head', introduced in pic related, I know what I'm talking about when it comes to good naming.

There you go again, making weak-ass cop-out excuses after the fact, like when you made excuses for Sora just suddenly being back in her body with no closure of the angle of her being a ghost. We see her as a ghost for, what, 2 pages? And then we never see her ghost form enter her body. It sucks.

Do you think your story needs all of these different races for it to work? Because it's starting to come off a bit of an overwrought babby's first fantasy epic with how sprawling and unfocused your worldbuilding is. Do a comic about what you want to make a comic and stop being afraid of random teenage girls being offended, because no matter what you do chances are that you'll end up offending someone somewhere along the way.Stop being such a pussy.

There's plenty of webcomics where the cast are just white, whitey and whiter that don't get shit on by SJWs simply because the creators clearly don't give a damn and don't respond to provocations.

That's really all there is to it. I put very little thought in my characters' names, because they're just names. Unless it's really extraordinarily terrible, the name will get over. People will get used to the name, and that's that. You shouldn't have to "think" of a name, unless you're going for something ultra-specific or referential. It's just a name.

All I really do is think of what ethnicity my character is, or close to if it's a fictional setting, then look through a list of names. I write down a list of names that I like, then decide which one I like most/ fits the character best.

For Little Bot, he's a robot, and he's 4 feet tall. So, the choice was obvious.

The four panel format works fine in other comics, so I guess it's just mine where it's an issue.

I've worked on other projects that use loose, dynamic layouts, and while I've gotten comfortable doing it, I just don't see any added benefit. The four panel format seems fine to me, especially on dialogue driven pages. Of course I'll break the format if I see a benefit. The previous page before the one you're replying to broke it. As did quite a few in the last action sequence. And the next action sequence will do the same.
>>
>>79066807
Hey there, anon. Hoping you're still here.
It is definitely a large project, luckily I have several other projects to keep me busy in the meantime. I intend for this to be a rich, vivid, and deep world on the same level as Lord of the Rings or The Elder Scrolls series, so yes, I agree it is a little ambitious.

Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with a large sprawling world, and I fail to understand why you seem to think that is a bad thing. As for unfocused, you haven't seen the 80+ pages of notes or the story I've been working on for this. Which makes it understandable that you may feel that it's unfocused.
As for the names, they are subject to change. I do agree that Fayerath and Xervanos do sound somehwhat odd, and I may change them somewhere down the line. That will probably happen as I define their cultures and way of life even more.

Here's the thing though, the Ardras Project ©, isn't limited to just the one story I'm working on. It's more like a project that I'm slowly adding stuff to on the backburner while I work on other projects, and it may end up as something more than just some webcomic or book. I intend for it to become the basis for a game, or even a series of games, or something even more. The possibilities are boundless.

Long story short, anon, there is nothing wrong with having a large and ambitious world to work on. There is no reason you should limit yourself.

Does anyone here have experience with Cintiqs?

I have a couple grand sitting around and have been considering getting one for years now. I've been using tablets for about a decade but I grew up drawing traditionally and the hand-eye disconnect has always been an issue for me, both in regard to artistic quality and workflow. I really want to break into doing commissions and webcomics, and I think a Cintiq will help me with that pursuit.

I'm just curious to hear if it gave other artists a boost, and I guess I'm also looking for encouragement in making the decision to drop sich a hefty sum on one.
>>
>>79070827
I use a Cintiq 15X, it's old as hell, but it gets the job done.
In my experience, it definitely helps, but its not as awesome as drawing straight on paper like you expect it to be. It's more like there's a thin sheet of glass between you and your drawing. However, I think once you go Cintiq, you'll feel blind going back to anything else. So once you go Cintiq, its going to be hard to go back.

If price is your concern, think of it this way. You're making an investment in a tool that will help you generate income. However, it won't be considered worth the money you spent on it until you use that tool to produce the amount of cash you dropped on it. Any money made after that point is all profit.

Good luck anon!
>>
>>79070827
Shop around & ask other artists about alternatives. There's this one brand that a few artists I know swear on, it's more in the $500 range, and it works just as well as a Cintiq...Can't remember the name though, sorry. But basically my point is that Wacom is overpriced and there are alternatives that are just as functional, if not better. Do some research.

Wow, the model you have is only like 300 bucks. Sadly I want one that's big and high def; probably gonna go with a 22HD. But yeah, I'm not really concerned with the price as long as it's worth it. I mean I definitely want to make some income off my art, but just being able to whip out quality work at a quicker pace would make me happy.

Thanks for the feedback.

I hear there's a reason those alternative brands are so cheap: the build quality is junk across the board, and driver support is a wash. Every review I read or watch for those three brands are filled with glaring negative issues. In my personal experience, I started off with a Wacom Graphire and that thing was a tank; never had any parts break or come loose in the seven years I used it, and the drivers were always on point. I wanted to upgrade to a larger tablet so I got a Huion H610Pro early last year. Despite being their top-of-the-line non-display tablet, it had huge software issues right out of the box that took me a week to fix, and the drivers don't support a lot of programs (especially open source, such as MyPaint). To top that off, the tablet itself is already falling apart even though I'm always gentle with it. I had to take the back off it and move the usb port (which is breaking off its soldering) around until it could hold a signal and connect to my pc.

Nothing? It's a bump and it's showing off (in that pic) the right side of the bottom part of whatever the bottom of the tip of your nose is called. Should be in about the right place.

I've moved it and the chin though since - however as a penalty she has apparently gained a slightly-too-long neck.
>>
>>79072531
oh the sketch lines were throwing me WAY off. i thought one of those horizontal lines was..
well nevermind that, it's clear what the problem is now. you have the face turned by like.. a big number of degrees, but you haven't turned the FEATURES more than a small number of degrees. That's tough, I know a lot of people struggle with that. I suggest for an exercise first unrotating the face so it's straight up, then selecting the eyes and just squishing them over to the right.. then moving the nose over til it looks right, and working out where the bridge would be, starting between the junction of the brows. Then as for the mouth.. er.. I dunno what to tell you about that except that upper teeth can't be overlapping lower teeth on both sides.. and then you'll work out how to shape the cheek and chin to suit a proper rotated face. you can do it!

>>
>>79072435
>fuck widescreen
Really? I can't stand 4:3 anymore. I agree that it sucks doing figure drawing on a widescreen, but the beauty of a cintiq is that you can rotate the whole thing and work in a portrait aspect ratio.
>>
>>79072926
yeah see with her eye moved and her chin this is already tons better.
now i don't wanna get arguey but you notice your skull has a really high nose and a low mouth, neither of which match your drawing (nor should they) right? what's more it's just a smaller skull overall, with a much smaller cranium than your character has.. so actually your drawing's already better than that.. I just think the nose should probably be turned a little more , but for now this actually looks fine and doesn't need any more tweaking.
>>
>>79072994
hadn't thought of that. shit.. i don't know any programs that support that though. where would the menus go? for me they go on the sides, leaving a relatively portrait space in the middle, which is perfect.

Yeah, I got lazy with the skull mouth - also didn't measure that part out, so the line bent more than it ought to have, making the whole thing lower than it should've been.

I must really be used to drawing faces wrong - because those eyes still look way too close to me even though the skull anatomy agrees with their positioning.
>>
>>79073203
that's because there's so much space between the eye and the side of the face, because you have to move the whole thing with it, including the side-lock (unless that hair is meant to be growing out of her temples!) and then probably make a thinner neck while you're at it
procedural anatomy is a big mess. that's probably why people love their construction and stuff
>>
>>79072183
>I have to admit I have difficulty following all the crazy stuff and transformations that go on in your comic, but I still enjoy the process of looking over it over and over to get it properly.

Well, I do happen to be VERY fond of transformations, mainly cause I love drawing "alternate" versions of the same character. And it's true that this has been quite a few transformations in two pages... but hey, I think it's easier to follow once the dialogues are put in
For the red hoods, that's what allows merrows (aquatic faires) to keep a mermaid/fish monster form for as long as they like, much like the villain in the previous chapter who used the necklace to become a horse.

>inasmuch as I do those, yeah. there's a big climax coming that will be the last big climax I have planned... which means I'm one climax short, because I have a bunch of other stuff planned for a big ending, and nobody to instigate it.

Heh, after this chapter I still have one more "monster of the week" chapter to go. One chapter to set up the climax of this arc, and Chapter 8 will be the big climax of this arc and the point where they can stop moving North. I quite exited for it really since I think I ended it in a pretty decent way, but time will tell...

I mean, that's what I'm saying. I'm not saying Toriyama and Oda were lazy or bad or anything of the sort. But just to focus on One Piece, Dragon Ball had just ended when One Piece started, Luffy's personality is basically the same, in broad strokes, as Son Goku... You can draw a direct line between Dragon Ball and One Piece.

If you broke it down and worried about TV Tropes, you could see it being almost exactly the same. But One Piece isn't Dragon Ball, and Oda isn't sitting around worrying if his comic is too similar to Dragon Ball. He's creating something that millions of people love. And even though I said it's basically just straight-up Dragon Ball with pirates, it's also something only Oda could do, and at the end of the day it's a brilliant piece of work in the medium that I would say is the rival of Lee and Kirby's Fantastic Four.

It boils down to only Toriyama could do Dragon Ball, only Oda can do One Piece, only Lee and Kirby can do Fantastic Four (John Byrne did okay) and only you can do you.

Oh man i pretty much had no time to do anything art related for like two months but now i can finally go back to working towards launching my comic. Me and my co-writer are still working all the kinks and little plotholes out of the story but it should be done soon. The hardest part is working on the character designs. I have done dozens of revisions but i can't seem to pruduce anything satisfying (I think i posted some on here back last year). Pic related its the latest version of my the lead character. I imagine the comic utilizing very flashy neon colours a lot of the time, especially for fight scenes during the parts where the magical girls are involved.

>Anyway, how do you gus go about character design?

Personally I think the cast is more fun the more body styles vary. Granted, my stylisation still needs work, but I think one should generally aim to make their charactes distinguishable by their silouette.

Though I've recently noticed I tend to assign certain bodies to a type of personallity without realising it: "Good" female characters in my comic tend to be on the rounder or curvier side, usually also shorter. While the "Bad" ones tend to go for less exagerated features, taller, and more slender.

That applies a bit to my males too, where the "prettier" males tend to be the bad guys while the less attractive or overly mucled ones tend to be good guys

It's more something I do subconciously, than intentionally

>>79088860
I wouldn't say it makes my heart ache, but it does make me a bit sad when the time will come for some characters to leave the group to go on with their own lives that are unrelared to the main story.
I have actually gotten quite affectionate to the current "party". From my perspective, when they get separated, they'll have been traveling together for over a year; but from the reader's perspective (especially if they read the comic latter on) the group will have only been together for about 50 pages, so they probably won't have gotten as attached as I have
>>
>>79070317
>As for unfocused, you haven't seen the 80+ pages of notes or the story I've been working on for this. Which makes it understandable that you may feel that it's unfocused.

You misunderstand what "unfocused" means I this case. I don't doubt that you have hundreds of pages worth of details worked out about every race's national holidays and favourite colors just as every other guy who wants to make the next Lord of the Rings. What I meant with "unfocused" is that from what you've shared here it seems like your ideas are all over the place with no common theme and don't make an interesting or unique whole. It's extremely generic.

And this

So one of the other comic ideas I've been working on is basically a bunch of people all getting together and seeking revenge on some crusty old bastards who are trying to take over 8 worlds of Yggdrasil and open up the door to asgard.

Main story follows a single dude (not pictured) who can traverse the worlds on his own, but eventually starts gaining a team of people who are, like him, Out for revenge.

One of the mechanics of the comic is that the MC cant travel up the world tree until he's "fixed" the branches connecting them. Yggdrasil has been broken and cut up, so the worlds are all working on different time tables. A week in one world could be a year in another.

Its still in rough stages but it's just basically an adventure pulpy kinda comic I can just have fun with and have a bunch of angry bastards go and hunt down a bunch of other bastards.

pic is of one of the possible "Group" members who is just a hired gun/mercenary.

Again, great quality -- especially for something you're not being paid for, everything works. Awesome!
To be honest I have some slight criticism that is not a big deal and I hope I'm not discouraging you by saying this, because I admire your work and the idea and execution of this comic are excellent and I will absolutely read it to the end, BUT: I get that the cliches are there on purpose, but I just wish the dialogue and expressions could reveal the character's real emotions just a little more often. Over exaggerating all the time makes a character feel less genuine, less sincere, you know? In my opinion, over exaggerating is like the punchline to a joke. So for an example, what I'm trying to say is, a joke should generally have a setup, bridge and a punchline, and to me exaggerating without showing the normal mood equally, is like a joke without a setup: there is no context for the joke. There are characters in stories who act silly all the time, but usually there is another, serious character there to create contrast. If everyone acts silly all the time, then thats actually just normal behavior in the world of that story -- it becomes the norm because there is nothing to compare it to. And in the reader's perspective it happens quite fast because all we know about the story is what we've seen so far.
Now I'm not saying this bothers me too much or that you should start making changes just to please one anonymous know-it-all on 4chan, I'm just hoping you keep improving and I really like the comic. Personally I just wish there were a little more genuine reactions to balance the whacky ones, so that we know which situations are meant to be silly and which are the character's normal, real reactions.
P.S: Miss Melee herself is great, I fucking love her.

You probably didn't know how to draw people either when you first started.
As cliché as it sounds, practice makes perfect. The difference is that instead of Learning anatomy, you're learning perspective. Once you learn how to work with vanishing points, the rest will come relativelly easy

I'm actually not too good at drawing interiors either; most of my comic happens across hills or forests (which I'll admit also aren't the greatest in these threads). But keeping a mental map of what the place looks like will also help for when you have to turn the metaphorical camera around

Hi anon. I just read your description of your project. I think it sounds like a really good opportunity to practice world building. Don't give up. About your discussion with the anon who pointed a out the theme (or lack thereof): I don't doubt you have one, but it really doesn't pop out from your description. What kind of conflict arises from how you have organised the world? How does it make the characters behave? For an example in a dark medieval world you know instantly that characters will have to face the harsh and unfair system of feudalism, swordfights and constant possibility of death by violence or disease. Or in a scifi world where humanity has moved to a new planet, you know there will be advanced technology and it's possibilities but also a strange new planet where humans aren't evolved to live in and may not be welcome and not to mention what if humans repeat the same mistake that made theme leave earth and so on. So that's how theme and the world you create work hand in hand and how you can explain the choices you've made about how the world works to emphasize what they mean to the characters who live in that world.

The best of luck with your project BTW.

Hey there anon! Thanks for clearing that up for me!
Ardras actually started as homebrew D&D game, so the original goal was to have an original world that the player characters could interact with and reflect their values on, and so the unifying theme would develop from their adventures in it.
However, since that game never came to be, I was left with this vivid and rich world with no story to it. I have recently however, been crafting together a story for, which I'll post in my next post, and I'll see if I can string together the unifying theme the other anon is looking for.
>>
>>79094039

So I'll try to outline the story without sounding like too much of a hapless nerd. (Good luck to me there, right? Where do you think we are?)

The story follows a young man (human, main character) from the poor side of Mandas, the largest metropolitan city in all of Ardras. He's had a rough life, so he's a bit of a troublemaker. He's very strong willed, and doesn't respect the authority of anyone but himself. A very "rebel without a cause" sort of character.
We start our story with him being caught for his petty crimes, and, with how most crime is dealt with in Aristolia, instead of rotting away in the dungeons, he's put to work, to be made a productive member of society.
His job turns out to be bodyguarding one of Aristolia's Trade Princes on their journey to Mandas Bay Island. This particular Trade Prince is well-known to be a corrupt politician, but our MC begrudgingly takes the job, as he is given no choice. Joining him is a mysterious woman who is also serving as a bodyguard. our MC questions her real intentions though.
As they set off, our Trade Prince hires a boat from the harbor and it's crew, and they set sail for their destination.

Aboard the ship, our MC does some nosy poking around while trailing the mysterious woman. While doing so, he comes upon a hidden cargo hold in the ship, only to find... Slaves! (Slave trade is illegal in Aristolia, but not all parts of the world) Among them, he finds a mysterious white haired girl with a strange necklace, and and even odder, an Essebü scholar accompanying her.
Our MC makes it top side to tell the Trade Prince what's going on, only to find him cornered. As it turns out, the crew of the ship were actually pirates, led by a notorious Tokage pirate captain, aiming to take the Prince hostage, and the mysterious woman, who turned out to be an assassin, come to seek revenge for her parent's death on the corrupt politician. As the situation grows ever dire, a storm grows, and begins to take hold...
>>
>>79094439

...the storm capsizes the boat, taking the vessel and all of its cargo with it.

Our MC washes up to shore, and wakes up to find next to him, the mysterious slave girl beside him. After some embarrassing first impressions, our MC and the girl start making their way along the beach, and soon find the Essebü scholar and the assassin easily holding down the Tokage pirate captain (who is surprisingly a lot more cowardly when he doesn't have his crew to back him up)

The group bullies the captain into telling them where they are and what he was doing transporting slaves. The only reason he isn't dead is because as it turns out, they are in the desert region of the Drylands, and only he knows the lay of the land. Our Tokage pirate here is a merchant of all kinds, and slaves are no different to him than any other luxury items. (Of course, this doesnt stop our gang from beating the crap out of him)
The Essebü is a scholar who had been exiled from his homeland for delving into knowledge that was deemed forbidden by the Elder Council, research on the nature of the 12 Gods of Ardras. And, found weak and near death, he was picked up by a slaving caravan in the desert. The assassin as it turns out is part of an Order known as Old Lithos, whose primary goal is to take down the Aristolian oligarchy, the Trade Prince was one of her primary targets. The mysterious white haired girl has been stuck in the slave trade as long as she could remember, but has always been able to escape, only to be caught over and again.

So here we have our main group.

The Main Character- The Rebel without a Cause
The Mysterious Girl- The Love Interest
The Assassin- The Badass Chick
The Tokage Pirate- The Comedy Relief
The Essebü Scholar- The Wise Man

Our group travels to the nearest pub, a seedy seaside town filled with thugs and bruisers (The only reason they stay together are because the desert wastes are riddled with monsters, and its better to not go alone)
Suddenly, the bar doors open.
>>
Meanwhile, farther along the beach, our good old friend the Trade Prince has also washed up on shore. And in his possession.. The mysterious necklace that was around the girl's neck. It steadily hums with a ominous glow. For whatever reason, the castaway politician can't seem to let it go. It's power is hypnotizing, he can feel himself getting stronger every waking moment. As though holding onto this necklace will grant his greatest desire. Power. And lots of it.
He shifts his way through the desert, easily ripping through monsters as his body begins to transform into a hideous shadow of his desires. Only one thing is on his mind, getting back at the miserable wretches who put him in this state of being.

Back at the pub, the doors open to reveal a gang of Tokage roughnecks, who are here to collect a heavy debt from the Tokage captain. Whether it be in gold, or by chopping off fingers (as is Tokage custom)
Our crew is all too happy to hand him over. Our Tokage captain desperately tries to negotiate in gold, and gets the Assassin to be his bodyguard, our MC joins in for the hell of the fight, and eventually the rest join in. In the midst of the bar fight, the side of the building crashes open. Amongst the debris stand the hulking figure of what was once the Trade Prince, here to seek revenge on our heroes.
He easily clobbers the Tokage roughnecks, and sets his focus on our adventurers. After a short battle, our adventurers are easily defeated, battered and bruised.
The mysterious girl, seeing that all may be lost, breaks down emotionally, and summons forth a powerful beam of energy from her arm (which has turned all black. She's the character in the top right here >>78992970)

The beam rips apart the horrible monster that was once the Trade Prince, as well as half the town. The mysterious girl passes out from the tremendous use of power. The necklace drops from the monster's clutch, transforming him back into the now dying Trade Prince...

Our MC makes a grab for the necklace, but is too late. One of the Tokage roughnecks from earlier grabs the necklace and runs off.

Our group recovers, save for the mysterious girl, who is still passed out from the use of power. The Essebü scholar reveals that in his travels with the girl, she would always be weaker when she didnt have her necklace on. Our MC, who previously never felt driven to do anything, awakens within him, a purpose, to help this girl. The group decides to pursue the thief across the Drylands.

Our party travels the deserts, pursued by all manner of monsters, bandits, and headhunters, (as well as two mysterious warriors) eventually make their way to the Drylands capital city of Goldhaven, which is ruled over by a human by the name of Au Shah the Magnificient, a quintessential paragon of greed and excess. His entire palace is made of gold, and his throne is made up of countless treasures from across the globe.

Our thief, who had been driven mad by the powers of the necklace, desired only to be the fastest person alive, and has made it to Goldhaven days before the group did, and has been exploiting his newfound powers by running errands and making money for the king of Goldhaven. Our group tracks him down and defeats him, but not before being lead into the throne room of Au Shah the Great, who has taken a keen interest in the necklace his servant possesses.

After the group defeats the thief, Au Shah takes the necklace as his own, and tells the party to leave. The party, unwilling to leave, demand the necklace be returned to its rightful owner. Au Shah, angered by such willful disobedience by those he sees as lower than him, gets angry. He dons the necklace, knowing that it holds the power to grant the bearer's desires. In the hands of someone with an insatiable greed, the necklace transforms Au Shah into a tremendous and hideous beast fueled by greed, becoming part gold, part monster, our group prepares for the biggest fight ever...
>>
>>79095661
Our group is joined by the two mysterious warriors who have been trailing them since the pub town by the shore. They reveal themselves to be a black coal Xervanosian and a marble white Fervorian who, despite their differences, work together.
All seven of them fight together to bring down the gargantuan Au Shah, whose mass now takes up the entire size of his palace.

Meanwhile, at the peaks of Goldhaven's mountains, the Essebü Elder Council takes notice of the havoc going on below. The Elder Council sends down one of their lead scholars to investigate; Eridu, the very person who put into motion the Essebü scholar's exile in the first place.

Au Shah is defeated, and the palace crumbles and the MC recovers the necklace.
The two warriors, with the main threat out of the way, turn their swords on the party. they demand the necklace, and they will have it no matter what.

End ACT I

That's all I'll type for now, unless anyone wants me to continue. I don't want to fill up the thread with anything nobody wants to read.
I'd love to hear any questions/ criticism, as I have been putting a lot of energy into this for a while.

As far as the unifying theme for the story goes, I feel its somewhere along the lines of "finding purpose"

Our MC is a young man with no direction getting into trouble all the time, until he meets the mysterious young girl. She gives him purpose.
The mysterious girl has been in the slave trade all her life, and now with her newfound freedom, she can do whatever she wants. That gives her purpose.
The Essebü scholar had been exiled from his homeland, lost and found himself in the worst of scenarios. Protecting his newfound friends and being of use to them gives him purpose.
The Assassin, with sole target of vengeance gone, feels lost, and traveling with these people fills her with purpose.
The Tokage, who has been at the mercy of debt collectors all his life, and having turned to piracy and dirty dealing to help pay off his ever mounting mountain of debt, finds a new found purpose in fighting to protect his friends.

Sounds like it would help!
Any guidelines as to how to go about it? Or is that really the bulk of it?
(Side Note: I might name the Essebü scholar Erset or Erset Latari. It means "Land of No Return" in Sumerian, which would make sense, since he is an exile from his homeland.)

Google the seven point story structure or any outlining guide. A tight synopsis should have the 1.protagonist (Luke Skywalker) in his normal world(farm)2.interrupted by an inciting event (a call for help from a princess) and a goal (to leave the farm to become a jedi, save the princess ) 3. Motivated by the need to live up to his lost father's legacy and to follow the mysterious obi wan kenobi, a new father figure, BUT theyre 4 opposed by the mighty empire 5. So he must join the rebels, learn to be a jedi knight and save the galaxy.

Oh, the seven point story structure. I'm familiar with it, but I usually structure my story's with "The Hero's Journey"

1. The Ordinary World- MC's life revolves around being a rebellious ne'er-do-well of the slums

2. The Call to Adventure- MC is forced to work as a bodyguard.

3. Refusal of the Call- MC's initial refusal to work as a bodyguard

4. Meeting the Mentor- MC meets the Essebü scholar (whose reason for being exiled turns out to be a major plot piece)

5. The Threshold- The ship being capsized and our heroes being castaway in a strange new land, marking the beginning of their journey.

6. Tests, Allies, Enemies- The major bulk of the story, this includes the Trade Prince, the thief, Au Shah the Magnificient, the two warriors (as allies), Eridu, The Elder Council, the nation of Xervanos, bounty hunters, the Black God,

7. The Approach- The necklace turns out being a powerful artifact needed to manifest into the world the God of the Xervanosian race (each race has a patron god, except for the Xervanosians, who only recently came into the world)

8. The Ordeal- The Black God is summoned, and our heroes must defeat it. However, it turns out the Xervanosian race was actually created entirely by Eridu, who had been gifted god-like powers by a mysterious force (who later turns out to be the original god of the world, who spawned the 12 Gods, who then turned on him and locked him away forever). Eridu however, now with the necklace, the mysterious girl, and the first part of his plan successful, eradicates the entire Xervanosian race, as they had served their purpose.

9. The Reward- After defeating the Black God and forcing Eridu to escape, our heroes travel to Chillrend to seek the counsel of the only one of the 12 Gods to continue living in its mortal form, living atop The Eye, the tallest mountain in the world. He grants them power to fight Eridu, and the One True God.
>>
>>79102550
It's not on any of the drawing layers?
Maybe it's a remnant of a malformed speech bubble?
>>
>>79104101

10 The Road Back- Our heroes now race to Fayearth to warn the Elder Council of Eridu's plot. (The Elder Council also happens to be the strongest group of magic users in the world)
They are too late, and the Elder Council uses the last of their power to open up a path to the pocket dimension where Eridu plans to resurrect the One True God using the Mysterious Girl as the vessel.

11. The Resurrection- Our heroes fight off against Eridu, then the One True God.

12. The Return Home- The One True God is defeated, and the Mysterious Girl is saved. (At this point, I want my story to end one of two ways, either they all live happily ever after, or the Mysterious Girl, now in possession of the power of a god, continues on as the New God of the World)

My new project is kinda unconventional for me so I'm still debating how to approach it. While the OMEGA Team will be the ones delivering the action, the MC is really an ordinary guy with no particular ability. He won't join the team, but he'll get involved with them a lot, and there won't be any development in him until pretty much the final stretch, were everything changes for him and the team.
I'm not sure how long it will be, but my only hope now is the action to be good enough to keep people engages until I managed to set all the pieces where I want to, and finally deliver the development I'll be holding hostage.

I'm not sure I did something like this before.

>>79104868
Sounds interesting, for sure. If not a little experimental. It may just be that you don't fully understand how story structuring works, or that you don't realize some aspects you're including in your story are lining up with story structure.

For example, your MC is "an ordinary guy," until he first meets with the OMEGA team (the Call to Adventure) He may not initially be interested at first (The Refusal of the Call), but some event may get him involved with them (The Threshold).
If your story follows the adventures of the OMEGA team, your readers are more likely to be interested in them as characters, especially if theyre the ones delivering the action, and your MC may fall off to the side as an uninteresting character.

I won't discourage you from experimenting with storytelling, some of the greatest tropes and plot devices have been born from experimental storytelling (Enter The Byronic Hero, as given to us by Lord George Byron in the early 1800s. If it weren't for him we wouldnt have characters like Lelouch vi Brittania or Light Yagami)

Just remember though, experiments do sometimes fail. But then again, sometimes they make us go "Eureka!"
>>
>>79105241
The story goes like this:
MC is a fan of OMEGA Team, he likes to read their exploits, and fanboy them a lot.
He'll be involved in a fight were he's saved by them and realizes the leader is his best friend, and from elimination the rest of the team is the class rep from other classes in his school.
Since then, he'll be involved with the beasts that attack a lot.
He gets targeted by the beasts too and the team will have to balance between saving the city and protecting him particularly.
Needless to say, except the leader, no one in the team stands MC, so, as a side story, MC will be trying to get along with them, with mixed results.

These are the basic gist. Telling more would be getting into the city origins, Team OMEGA origins itself and the relation with the beast, so I rather save that one for now.

The thing is, MC is gonna be the kind of guy who over analyses everything, and the more the story progresses, the more he'll link everything that's happening to the city with the beasts, Team OMEGA, and the Grammaton mineral, because of course it's related.

Hey guys, I want to do audio for an animation based off of my webcomic, but Audacity keeps on crashing before the program can even start.

>>
I keep doing some world building and I'm having a lot of fun with it. Today I'm focusing on the high-school. It's a magnet for supernatural shit and demons are in the staff. Most of them just teach their subjects wrong.

>School newspaper has an obituary section
>Gets two spring breaks. An official spring break and an extra break to recover from all the murder and mayhem during the first spring break.
>The principal is hybrid of Hulk Hogan and Mike Haggar. Shit gets rough, he rips off his shirt and grapples it into submission.
>Nearly every student has some fucked up parental situation.

There's more but this is the first time I'm really jotting it down.
>>
>>79112737
this sounds good. some of it's been done, recently, but still good. I'd like it if somehow there was an explanation for why this school attracts it all.
>>
>>79112873
Yeah, the obituary thing is explicitly a Buffy reference and I was gonna play with all the stuff that's been done. I'd go between playing it straight and subverting things.

The town the school is in is built where a lot of ley lines cross so the dimensional barrier is weaker there. Kind of a ley knot because it's purely chaotic energy. People with even a trickle of supernatural ability are drawn to the place.

>The school is also named Reagan-Carpenter High.
>The school bully is fifth year senior Micah Conrad.
>Their mascots are the Warriors, though I might go for the Bronconeers because that makes me chortle.
>The guidance counselor is a low-ranked succubus who helps students make poor career decisions.
>>
>>79113251
makes me chortle too. do it. You can imply the name was chosen while people were under a kinda braindeadness spell, or chosen by some kind of dimwitted homunculus on the staff.
>>
>>79113443
Bronconeers it is! I'll say the name was chosen while drunk at the bi-weekly PTA orgy/potluck.

>The current principal's ex-wife is chief of police and also a hardcore Satanist.
>His daughter keeps trying to solve mysteries (She idolizes Nancy Drew) but gets sent away by her dad for fear she'll end up murdered for knowing too much.
>The majority shareholder of Pottery Barn (I'll think of a good expy name for it) is a fallen angel who specifically hexes the stores to exacerbate tension between couples.
>The previous principal was given 'the sight' by a student and went mad from all she witnessed. >Despite being driven insane, she still refused to give up her title until the superintendent intervened and installed the new principal.
>>
>>79113690
either that or, depending how SCP-ish this setting is, they could have SWORN they chose the warriors but it changed later and any attempt at changing it in the computer system always reverts back

Alright, notable students of Reagan-Carpenter HS
>A young demon who is the grandson of Lucifer. He's is time-displaced and can see three seconds into the future. He experiences almost everything twice. Also constantly eats to ward off his addiction to human flesh.
>Three older boys who sold their souls to him to save their friend, who is a girl.

Here anon. I know it's a parody, but use this to glean an idea for a milfy looking character.

>I imagine nobody knows who Longinus is, and they're always confusing him for other spear-wielders like Chu Chullain or Odin or something.
She barely knows who Longinus is herself. Also the Odin thing comes into play much later, but it's a pretty crazy plotline. I'll summarize it in bit.

From my experience posti g in these threads, generally if a piece gets passed over or ignored in the following ten posts, it won't see anything for the rest of the thread. I'm just looking for SOME input.

Your response certainly didn't provide any.

haven't got any. wouldn't want to give you feedback motivated out of boredom
in any case we need a new thread now. If you wanna be a cool guy and make it, then you can quickly repost your picture again and we'll see what he the next day brings (repost it either way. nothin wrong with that. just don't self-bump like that)
btw your experience is doodoo and even if it was true it wouldn't imply the causative relationship worked in that direction

hope there's a thread to come back to in the morning
