Man, I feel like Ruby's only justification for being a main character is her uncanny ability to walk into plot progression.

The series starts with her accidentally meeting Roman Torchwick, in Volume 2 she walks into Cinder's plan by accident, same goes with the whole Torchwick and the White Fang train thing by the end of the volume.

And now she is once again, the only main character to walk into plot, and by sheer coincidence. Probably because she is the only main character without her own sub plot going on, so we gotta make her be the only one to step into progression no matter how contrived it is.

Honestly your best bet would be to look through books. Western media rarely uses child soldiers unless they are shows aimed and kids, and most shows aimed at kids won't use eldritch horrors. And usually when you find both those things together it will be a book, almost always young adult for young protagonists.
Where in Japan the whole child soldier thing is played up a lot more and they have more acceptance for showing violence against them.

Honestly most fiction will not take into account the full implications of what it shows. The issue is RWBY does not have a writing staff to write a good story over all. The reason being a multifaceted issue, firstly when you are dealing with stuff like aura, semblances, and other fantasy elements we have no true analogy to draw conclusions on the full implications of what they do from, we have to make guesses and write it in a way that makes sense, and makes a good story.
Also you have to factor in when you make things too realistic when you are working with fantasy things it will cause the entire thing to fall apart. Look at most super hero fiction, superman for instance can fly fast enough to cause friction burn, he does this in the atmosphere fast enough he could in theory burn the entire thing up and kill everyone. Well that would give a weakness it would also be a one time find out and oh shit.
And really in the end it's storytelling needs to triumph over reality, because they inherently are not reality, the issue with RWBY writing isn't that it is unrealistic it is that it is inconsistent with itself. It also has a lack of focus and a really bad lack of pacing and vision. I don't know their full vision but I know from what I have seen the stuff they have planed out either didn't plan out important things beyond single plot points, or contradicted each other and no one bothered to proofread it and fix these issues.
It's honestly an issue with a lot of media aimed at younger audiences, and even some at older audiences where the return to status quo is almost always a must. It prevents real changes but makes it digestible in any order. The issue being if you are trying to tell an epic story you can not do this, if you are telling a series of self contained stories you can.

Red Herring.

We're built up to believe that Pyrrha is supposed to be the new Fall Maiden. Especially with her character arc now reflecting this.

However, it might be a good twist for Ruby to end up getting Amber Autumn's powers. Now they can explore Pyrrha's reaction to no longer having to consider the burden of being a Maiden AND Ruby's newly found burden of being a Maiden.

It can also help make Ruby and her team get a little more involved in the plot AND make Cinder look silly. I can see her lose her shit over this, or at the very least have a moment where she almost loses her shit but calms down and says it's a setback.

The problem, though, is that Vytal is a floating stadium. So unless it crashes into the tower early, there's no way they can get to the basement.

So... am I the only one who thinks Autumn's Amber's last name?

Trips have spoken! I agree with this. Pyrrha should be spared the fate of becoming a maiden. Pyrrha is still only a deuteragonist. If anyone should become a maiden by choice or accident it should be Ruby. It would help get her and her team more involved in the plot. Ruby needs to step up to become more of a main protagonist. She hasn't had any development this volume so far.

Four episodes left. It's still possible, but the odds are decreasing with each episode.
