>Over the last few months kaiju fans have been thrown a wealth of renewed interest in the subgenre. Godzilla vs. Kong was announced, as Godzilla Resurgence went into production. Kadokawa-Daiei showed interest in devloping a new Gamera project with CG clad footage. Skull Island is entering the last few weeks of shooting. Ultraman's 50th birthday is underway with the upcoming Ultraman X movie and the mysterious 50th anniversary project.

>Unfortunately, not all of these giant monster films may see the light of day. One in particular is heartbreaking. According to sources speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Pacific Rim 2 has been taken off the table at Universal and shelved indefinitely.

Well, at least we got Godzilla Resurgence this year, that new Kong movie, Godzilla 2 in 2018 and, hopefully, the Versus flick sometime after.

Man, life as Del Toro sucks recently.

Silent Hills, Justice League Dark, movie studio wanting Mountains of Madness to be PG-13, now this.

Also, none of your movies making back budget.

Maybe they'll throw us a bone and greenlight Pacfic Rim animated shorts by different anime studios like the Animatrix or Halo Legends.

Do we? Shelving 2 might have shelved the series as it lead to 2.

Good to see Universal is wisely investing their money in movies I don't want to see. I've got to keep that streak going you know.

Didn't Legendary get bought out by Chinese? Pacific Rim was made by Legendary. Japs and Chinks love robots and monsters, so there's a chance. Also Warcraft, which is being made by Legendary. So you know that's getting a sequel regardless.

Was anyone else diappointed that the reveal of the baby kaiju didn't lead to any new development?
I was expecting it to be free of the alien control, or to see that scientist guy as its mother, or reveal that the kaiju are more than canon fodder, or anything.
Instead it just tried to kill the guy but died by accident. It's only kill is undone in the mid credits sequence. And it conveniently offers a brain for the scientist to use, but I wonder why the movie couldn't just say that the mother's survived.
Similarly, during the bunker part I was expecting Otachi to actually want to protect the guy after connecting with him.

My biggest if not only problem with Pacific Rim was that the kaiju had no presence after they turn out to be canon fodder created by some evil aliens. I was hoping the sequel or the tv series would put more effort into them beyond their designs, to make them individuals and morally grey as imo kaiju are supposed to be.

Guess my only hope now are the comics.

But seriously, who doesn't want stories were baby otachi and scientist nerd have a relationship like Zilla jr. and Tatopoulos in that Godzilla animated series?
>>
I'm glad. I honestly didn't like the film. The actions sequences themselves were alright but nothing else was.
>>
Crimson Peak being a gigantic flaming bomb probably doesn't help things, honestly.

Turns out making a 100% accurate recreation of stuffy old gothic romance stories doesn't have a market. Who knew, besides literally anyone Del Toro could have talked to?
>>
>>78780166
I thought it was going for a John Carpenter's THE THING thing.
>>
>>78777760

He's horrific, malformed and utterly mutilated by the bomb. I love it. This isn't a heroic godzilla, nor is it a super cool villain. It's a tortured monster.

>>
>>78781376
>Similarly, during the bunker part I was expecting Otachi to actually want to protect the guy after connecting with him.
Wow, so you didn't realize that it attached that particular bunker in an effort to specifically KILL Newt?
Newt learned too much from drifting with the partial brain, and with the hivemind the aliens knew this. So they sent one of the Kaiju to kill newt before the humans could use the information he got. It never "connected" with Newt, its particular mission was to KILL him.

Welcome to /co/ newfriend.
>>
/co/, do you really see a future in kaiju stuff? The US Godzilla flick did okay enough to warrant those followups and a new Jap film, but can they reasonably expect a big success, or is the genre going to quickly peter out again, leaving only the hardcore fans caring about it?

Things don't look bright for PR, but as for Godzilla, Anno's touches and the added monsters could launch the brand to new heights just as easily as they can alienate audiences even more.
>>
>>78782835
Didn't the execs want him to do shit like add a romance plot and PG-13? They probably would have wanted him to give it a happy ending too.
In that case I'm kind of glad he sticks to his guns about refusing to make it if he was forced to add that garbage.

>>
>>78782379
I assumed that, but the scene when the monster finds him by using its flower-like tongue seemed surprisingly "beautiful" and "paceful" suddendly, so for a tiny moment I wondered if there was going to be a twist that the monster wasn't actually sent to kill him, but received his signal and now had bonded with him.
I wanted the movie to surprise me with the kaiju, but they were just used to advance the plot, both the kaiju brain link and the reveal of the baby could have been used to do something interesting. I really hated the alien invaders twist.

God damn, the characters and writing was some of the cringiest shit I've ever seen.
>>
>>78788955
There's a whole history of Super Robots (which Pacific Rim took after way more than the Real/Military Robot genres) ripe for references and that guy picked Gundam just because it's also in space.
>>
>>78788972
Because it was the only giant robot movie we'd probably ever get that wasn't Transformers. I don't know how to explain it man. For a lot of folks it was a lifelong dream set to film. There's a board dedicated to it for a reason.
>>

Del Toro is a mexican who grew up on Mazinger. He said in interviews that the movie was not meant to be an homage to Japanese monster movies Pacific Rim's Kaiju were the same as any 70's & 80's monsters of the week in Super Robot anime. They were meant to be to look cool when they were introduced and to be beat up, not be super individualized and sell toys themselves.

A sequel would have done well with a more threatening adversary to be sure, and based on what they were talking about for a sequel after the first one's release (the aliens developing Kaiju/Jaeger hybrids) I bet we would have got that in the form of a Kaiju that had some of Gypsy Danger's parts.

More of a moderate success with many shortcomings that left people disappointed, so the sequels can go either way.

The last movie was only dull because they barely showed Godzilla. They always tried cleverly hiding him with directors tricks, like having him SKREEONK on the other kaiju and then cutting off to the human protagonists' family watching the fight in the TV, or have the fight shown from the point of view of the refugees who have their van doors closing, and so on.

But the ~10 minutes of the movie that has constant kaiju fights without stupid interruptions? Those are gold and make the whole movie worth it. Especially when Godzilla uses his nuclear breath.

I do like the 1998 movie though. It's only fault was being called Godzilla - if you don't associate it with the Japanese king of monsters, then it is actually a pretty fucking fun monster movie. Then again I'm partial to Jean Reno.

>>78822784
The Jaegars were plenty marketable. People were posting constantly about how awesome they were expecting China's and Russia's to be based on the blueprints. The problem is there wasn't enough time in the one movie for all of them to shine. If they had tried to make a particularly notable Kaiju, besides the looming threat of a Category 5 that they foreshadow throughout the movie, then the other Jaegars would have had even less screen time.

The problem is, and I hate that it's the case, but mecha series focusing on lots of machines and/or monsters just work better as serialized entertainment rather than one off (and if you're lucky sequel every few years getting) movies.

The major problem with this movie is they spent so much time not showing that stuff we wanted to see. I was really sad having gone to see this movie hyped up. The team of Jaegers was literally just 1 doing all the fighting. Half of them die right away in first deployment even and the ultimate job of the last living one was to be a pack mule. So where did all their time go? Into extremely wooden acting from out main cast dragged out in the most painful way possible.

I'm from eastern Europe and I really like the 98 Zilla flick. Not so much as "look at how better it is than the Power Rangers", but because it's a movie I can watch and have fun with. The story makes sense, the script doesn't have humans being retarded at every other minute, the characters all act appropriate to their profession, the special effects are nice to look at even today, and it is a monster movie with a little bit of Jurassic Park thrown in. On top of that they don't try to hide the monster behind camera tricks and such bullshit either, he gets proper screen time.

And the movie has Jean Reno in it.

Like I said, the only fault of the movie is that they called the monster Godzilla.
>>

Tron actually didn't make much more than it cost, which was a shame because they were gonna re-do tomorrowland all in tron style if it was a big hit.

But I feel you Anon. I feel you so deep it hurts. Everytime something unique comes out plebs don't bother to see it then complain that hollywood is out of ideas. Hollywood literally has millions of ideas, they just know that you'd rather see a low budget comedy/horror/romcom instead of something new expensive or weird. They're only giving the plebs what they want and the plebs want more Paul Blart.

This is why the PR was crap. I remember /co/ and /m/ constantly shitposting about how people who didn't like this movie were turned off by giant robots and monsters. In actuality, they were always ignoring the main complaints of it being boring as hell and not having ENOUGH giant robots and monsters.

You had a variety of robots and geographical locations to use but you give the generic mechs the most screentime and a majority of fights take place in rainy nights. Good going, Del Taco.

Yeah. And both Jet Jaguar and Mechagodzilla were called King Kong. European translations were all over the place with these movies. Some Gamera movies even had title variations that put the name 'Godzilla' in there, though I don't know if those were just bootlegs or official releases.

I'm not German, just watched some of these flicks (or video reviews of them) in that language, and read about this stuff in articles and books, so some genuine Germfag would probably have better insight.

I mean, yeah, a lot of them are fucking borefests to anyone who's not a hard fan, but so are a lot of the second-series ones IMO with their overthought yet at the same time underdeveloped plots. The original series is pretty varied and something of a roller-coaster of quality and crazy.

besides Godzilla, we also get a new Gamera and Ultraman reboot this year

also Colossal starring Anne Hathaway
>After losing her job and boyfriend in New York, Gloria moves back to her hometown only to discover how strangely connected she is to a giant creature.
>Vigalondo has completed a script that will be a twist on the Kaiju genre and an homage for the Godzilla franchise. Vigalondo's plans are to deliver a serious film with "old school" practical effects on a low budget.

I was skeptical at first, but this sentence gave me a boner.

>Striker Eureka

Yeah, nah, you're a cunt. It made a Category 5 Kaiju call for help. I still wish Pentecost would have surprise-ejected Straya the Younger before pressing the fuck-it button on the nuke, though. That plotline came out of nowhere and didn't really need to happen - they even foreshadowed the idea that Pentecost could pilot solo for just a little bit.
>>
>>78857594
SE also had the highest kaiju kill before the movie started. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if most of those kills was from fighting Australian wildlife.
>>
>>78857594
In the depths they're in, Straya Jr. would've been chunky salsa anyways.

>>78857647
Hell, the Kaijus are lucky they didn't meet the Emu Jaeger.
>>
>>78846074
Why the living hell would you want that? What are you going to get out of condensing that into 3 (at most, if the studio is lucky) Hollywood-ized movies? I'm all for someone else writing some new Ultraman/Devilman fanfiction with mecha rather than super heroes, but turning Eva into live action seems misguided.

Appearently the reason Big G looks so fucked up is its the original 54' Zilla. The oxygen bomb didn't finish the job and it regenerated.

This godzilla is clearly able to move but, its still in the process of fully regenerating its body which explains the frightening exterior and the torn scraps of flesh and muscle between the scales. No eyelids brah, shit sux.

Only half of them are really for kids, mostly the ones from the 70s, and they are a lot of fun.
The 60s movies are the best in my opinion (along with the original Godzilla and Rodan from the 50s).
>Mothra
>King Kong vs. Godzilla
>Mothra vs. Godzilla
>Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster
>Godzilla vs. Monster Zero
>Frankenstein vs. Baragon
>The War of the Gargantuas
>Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster
>Son of Godzilla
>Destroy All Monsters
All of these are great in their own ways.
And this is only regarding Toho.
The Showa era is the most diverse so far.

those charts suck, because you cant simply compare the lenght of the screentime, but also the QUALITY of the screentime:

if a japanese godzilla has 10 minutes of screentime, then you see 90% of the time Godzilla fully in broad daylight

if legendary godzilla has 10 minutes of screentime, then its 90% just muddy and obscure shots (underwater, only a feet or tail, a tv-broadcasting)

Should we blame the Soviets for this too?

>>78860748
To be honest for a moment, a lot of the early Showa films only work for me on paper. Reading about the supposed brilliance of Sekizawa's scripts, the actors, the films' social commentary and all that, shit gets me hyped. But I get none of that if I actually sit down to watch them (some exceptions notwithstanding).

Ghidorah was one of the most insufferably boring experiences I had with a monster flick, and the cheesy brawl at the end wasn't payoff enough. Also King Kong vs. Godzilla, while I appreciate the satire and the filmmakers' ambitions, and reading about the behind-the-scenes stuff is interesting as hell, doesn't grab me on any level.

>Say you love Kaiju and wanna pay homage to them
>Heavily market the creatures to the point of having featurettes and advertising the film in Japan as a "Kaiju eiga movie"
>Create a film where the monsters have the personality of an electric drill and are given no presence and instantly thrown into fights so that robots can beat them up

>underage boy jerking off onto underage girl's tits

No way in hell the writers could get away with that. That being said, they should aim for an R rating.

Writers, no.

>>
>>78777760
Why in God's name are they making a Japanese live action film of Godzilla when the American adaptation is still on-going? Doesn't Legendary Pictures have exclusive film rights to it? I mean, wouldn't they be at least worried that some people might confuse the Japanese adaptation as theirs?

Courts have ruled the even "simulated" children is child porn and illegal.
>>
>>78864293
Thanks, is it worth a read?
>>
>>78867332
The US sequel won't be out for another two years, the Japs can't miss the opportunity to make some money until then. Don't think exclusive film rights were ever a thing in the deal, the property still belongs to Toho and their greasy hands.

As for confusing people, well, they already are doing that, but I don't see this movie getting an international wide release, so it isn't as much of an issue.
>>
>>78867467
I only read the first issue, where that image is from, because the creator who did Godzilla: Half Century War wrote and drew it. But I think /co/'s like the whole mini.
