The movie follows the comic panel by panel, the reason why Snyder changed the ending was because he knew the Space Squid wouldn't sit well with a film audience, so he changed it to Ozymandias blaming the destruction of New York on Dr. Manhattan, I assume he also lengthened the fight scenes to sit well with the audience too. But aside from that, it's extremely faithful to the comic, and the message is still there. Just watch it and form your own opinion.
