Cyclops is an icon of the X-men series, and while he will never be the most popular Marvel thing at any given time, he helps the X-men myth and narrative. He's easy to self-insert onto, any joe schmoe can look like Cyclops.

The rivalry with Wolverine, who by all accounts has much more power creep, gives Wolverine fans something to hate. The simplicity of his power, laser beams, makes him easy to read, watch or play in most mediums.

And he's got texture to his character. He's ready to become unpopular because he believes he's doing the right thing. Between vaping his dad into powder, shacking with Emma Frost, or the Hope Summers *thing*, he's often doing things that aren't 100% agreeable. And usually it's OK.

Bengus didn't design Morrigan, nor most of the Darkstalkers. It seems like people don't really understand the way the design process worked at Capcom. There were several different jobs, done in phases: brainstorming, finalizing design, moveset preparation and animation. then illustration last of all. The lion's share of the work was usually done by the spriters, they were usually the ones who designed the characters and their moves. The illustrators then drew stuff like the package and poster artwork (and sometimes things like in-game portraits and cutscenes) based on what the spriters had come up with.

That's because Marvel VS Capcom 2 was basically Mugen. Just grab all the sprites you had and toss them in. And since Capcom happened to have done two X-Men-themed games in the past,. that was a big chunk of what they had.

Off the top of my head, Morrigan and Felicia were designed by Hiroshi Shbata. Anakaris, Victor, and Lord Raptor were designed by Toru Takaoka. Akiman has talked about this sort of thing on Twitter. The designs came from all sorts of people who never get nearly as much credit as the illustrators.

The other 2 are inspirational figures, they appear and everyone loves them, as part of their character description.
Cyclops is the one who carries that weight all on his shoulders but isn't really goot at communication.
They are the PR guys, he's the IT guy or the accountant.

IMperfect, flawed, morally ambiguous characters are those who we can related to. And those flawed characters raising above their weaknesses is what can inspire you.
People who like caps or supes aren't looking for inspiration, they're looking for a protective daddy to tell them that it will be alright.

It really is the exact same sprites. Yeah, MvC2 has some 3D backgrounds and stuff due to running on a newer arcade board, but the character sprites are the exact same ones from the CPS2 games, downgraded if anything (fewer frames of animation).
