That's a horrible self-insert fantasy. Who would prefer that to being by her side as a partner in crime or loyal henchmen? Striving to better yourself so you can make sure that you will always be useful to her, disregarding everyone and everything else in the world except for her, and risking everything just to be around her? I don't see how anyone could rather have a boring normal girl instead of that.

Just natural impulses, I suppose. And that a lot of people picture themselves in the hero role, rather than knocking over banks and burning orphanages.

Framed in the context "It's fantasy, you can be king of the world!" I suppose it does seem a little silly though.

A variation on this: 2nd in command realizes that his boss is an idiot with a ridiculous, non-serious goal. So he ends up killing his boss and takes over as a REAL evil villain for the final battle.

I love when he actually goes as far as to have an assistant as well. Not like Phoebe in hey Arnold since Helga wasn't the bully described but just some stereotypical need following them around with a notebook scheduling all the bully's beatings. I think that happened on that old cartoon Wayne head.

In the Cybertron series Starscream pretty much out smarts everyone get the power of Primus which turns him into a giant. He owned everyone for a good while until most of that power was stolen from him. But he did get a sweet crown for his troubles.
