Now that we have Star Wars I feel less hyped for the sequel. It feels less like a spiritual successor to Star Wars and more like this generation's Space Balls.
>>
>>78500318
I loved the movie but it influenced the comics in a very shitty way.

This, pretty much. The movie was fantastic, but it sucks that Marvel immediately tried to cash in on its success by a shallow imitation in the comics rather than actually utilizing the team's history in a unique way.

finally some one gets it.
>>
>>78500318
>Space Balls

Space Balls was pure satire/parody. GotG lampoons some aspects of sci-fi, space opera stories, but it has genuine drama and interesting world-building to flesh out the story on top of just cracking jokes.

It's funny to think of how much of a complete 180 Marvel pulled on the title comparing the series before the movie was released and after.

I loved TFA (yeah yeah, shit taste I know) but I agree GotG had some really creative world-building and designs. Kind of wish they went more out-there with alien designs though.

>>
>>78502865
Not really
>>
>>78502865

GotG is a more convention sci-fi blockbuster, but it's a ton of fun with a good cast. Chris Pratt is goddamn perfect.
>>
Did GOTG have any science in it?
>>
>>78500318
I for one am looking forward to seeing the GOTG universe in more detail. There's no such excitement for Episode VIII since they are clearly sticking to the original trilogy beat for beat. I'd rather watch something new rather than a slavish rehash of an old property.
>>
>>78502888
>>78502882
Alright, because Super is in my top 10 favorite movies, and Slither being one of my favorite horror comedies, I do not know how well Gunn can do more mainstream stuff.

Last time he did mainstream, it was Scooby Doo 2
>>
>>78502843
Will Marvel even know what to do with their films when they use those things up?
>>
>>78502894

They really don't make any attempt to justify or explain weird shit in the setting. Very soft sci-fi overall.

They even pull the mistaken "vacuum of outer space is freezing" cliche.
>>
>>78502849
I suppose I meant more in how they initially tried to hide as much of the DnA/Giffen run as possible by making them look like Mass Effect rejects, to embracing the run to the point that it became a cheap imitation.

For the most part, they're just staying true to the comics. A lot of the alien civilizations in the Marvel U are just humans with a different skin color, and maybe no nose or weird face-framing feathers or something. It's a bit annoying, but I can't fault the visuals of the universe they made.
>>
>>78502827
This. Cosmicfags just like to suck Gunn's balls because that's all they have left and not even that is true.

Nice job bringing us back to The Force Awakens.
>>
>>78502894
None. It's science fantasy like Star Wars. Maybe a little more sci-fi than Star Wars, at least they have computers and communications better than grainy holograms.
>>
>>78502912
>implying GotG 2 won't be a rehash of the first one

you are in for extreme dissapointing son
>>
>>78502894
No real attempts to explain tech in detail, but few things really stretch scientific concepts, except the scenes with the heroes in the vacuum of space. It's really just a fun spaceship-and-blaster sort of romp, and other than that, it's mostly character focused.
>>
>>78502849
Almost all the members of DnA Guardians were earth heroes you idiot, and Thing has plenty of connection with space to be there.

And Thing leaving won't bring back Rider either
>>
>>78503022
We already know about like 3 new characters, and one of them is Pete's dad. Step it up son.
>>
>>78503022
I don't think it'll be the same at all. Most of the first one was setting up the characters. The thing that people will say is how the second Awesome Mix is not as good as the first one. They can make a better one, but they can't make one so much better that surpasses the sum of the quality and novelty of the first one.

Also, with the Martian using david bowie's starman, will they use it here? It's pretty much on point with the first one and fits the Starlord and possible Starhawk theme.
>>
>>78503205

They already used a Bowie song in the first movie. I don't know if they'd return to it.
>>
>>78503067
Most of the ones from Earth, with the intentional exception of Jack "I hate cosmic stuff" Flag, are cosmic in powers or origin, or at least have had most of their adventures in space. Thing's a guy whose powers are cosmic, and whose adventures sometimes venture into space and other dimensions, but are always rooted back to Earth. Characers like Drax or Mantis who have a connection back to Earth at some point, aren't really like that.

It's always been this generation's Space Balls. I've always felt as if the Star Wars comparisons were being done by teenagers who weren't all that familiar with Star Wars.
>>
>>78500318
Outside of the remarks to spaceballs, I felt that after the first hour of force awkens, the "writers by committee" squad of Disney forced the new star wars movie to drag it's ass. Gotg might have gotten the same treatment if not for the fact that literally, no one knew who the group was until after the theatre s
>>
>>78502865
You'll like it
>>
>>78502738
Ain't they making a new spaceballs?
>>
The New Star Wars movie put the original trilogy in a blender and played it so safe than nothing new was really added to the lore nor did they bother with continuity or world-building of what happened after Return of the Jedi.

Guardians of the Galaxy at least had ambition and that's something Disney lacked with Star Wars because it's easiest to repackage an old movie and turn it into a formula then take a chance.
>>
>>78503314
dna used all the heroes from space already, by the time of Jack flag he was starting to steal the z heroes/villains as well. it's the next logical step, that or start creating all new characters.
>>
>>78503469
Yeah. For over thirty years, they've been producing a new Spaceballs film, a Spaceballs cartoon and video games and a live-action TV series.

They're just never going to be released. Or finished. Or produced.
>>
>>78503533

Why I enjoy both movies is because they both had a cast of likeable characters that sold the setting and plot regardless.

"TFA recycled too much from the original trilogy" is a legitimate complaint, I agree, and I wish the writers let the new characters stand on their own more.
>>
>>78503067
Why would Thing have any influence over Richard's placement in GotG? He was never on the team.
Sam and Jessi are the ones who need to leave for him to come back.
>>
My favorite Marvel film, hands down.

Guardians ABSOLUTELY has flaws: some of the jokes make me audibly groan, Gamora's character arc is compressed, Nebula has almost no screen time, and Lee Pace is misused and potentially miscast.

But holy shit, what this film does right, it brings Marvel to a new gold standard. Peter's emotional arc is tight--he goes from insisting people know his nickname while forgetting the name of his one night stand to putting together a found family--every side character is interesting, the costumes are excellent, the prison escape sequence always has me excited, somehow a raccoon with a machine gun makes me tear up, and HOLY SHIT COLOR. SOMEONE IN HOLLYWOOD FINALLY PUT SOME GODDAMN COLOR BACK IN THEIR BLOCKBUSTER, HOLY SHIT.

I guess part of why the film works for me is that I wasn't expecting it to. The trailers were awesome, and I value the mix, but I was pretty damn meh until I was in the theater, watching Pratt come and get your lo-ooove.

Also, yes, Star Wars does figure into what I like about the film. It's not because it improves on Lucas' formula or tries to make a straight up parody like Space Balls. No, it's because it feels like it took a lesson from the SW-universe, and tried to make something that felt grand. Star Wars fascinated me as a kid because it felt like so much was happening off-screen in other corners of the universe.

Guardians is inside one of those distant corners of the universe. It makes Marvel feel like a very purposeful mosaic rather than a bunch of blockbuster movies that mostly hang together.

This film speaks to me. It warms my cold, jaded heart. Nothing about this should have been special and yet it was and is.
>>
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 will be 100% a different movie, so I'm lowering my expectations now. My hopes are that we'll see more of the characters doing things and that we'll get a new Guardian in the mix (probably Mantis). As far as I can tell, that's already happening.

Otherwise? I'm sure people will whine about the new soundtrack (like, it will have some classical or OH NO WHERE'S BOWIE WAAAAH) and not every question fans have will be answered (I don't care about Quill's dad, honestly). Certainly, people are already disappointed because no Avengers will be in it.

But I'm curious. I'm really, really curious.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in this. I came into that movie with expectations set too high by Brooks' other movies and people's hype about it, and it just didn't measure up to either. IMO, it's not even as good as Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Nice, I never knew about this guy until I saw guardians and ever since I've loved the fucker. His sense of humour is great.
>>

He was pretty ridiculous and probably the best of Marvel's mustache twirling MUAHAHA villains.
>>
>>78504579
They haven't said anything like that. All they've said is that Gunn still hates Nova
>>
>>78504733

To be fair, Robin Hood: Men in Tights also had early Dave Chappelle and Cary Elwes hamming the fuck out of everything he was given.
>>
>>78504648
the way I figure, Peter finds his dad, who is hunting for some great weapon so that he can stand up to Thanos. They race for it, near the end Peter sabotages both their chances so Rhomann Dey or someone gets to it first, and he shares it with the rest of the corps
>>
>>78504734

His best moments are definitely on Parks and Rec as Andy Dwyer. Give it a watch at the start of season 2 and you won't be disappointed.
>>
>>78504775

Who would've thought that Andy Dwyer could be a convincing action protagonist hero.
>>

I can see that, but I think that shortchanges Nova Corps into a kind of afterthought. It would be a cool beginning for their own movie, though.

Oh, no way. He had that charisma since day 1. He just needed the right part for it.
>>
>>78504098
I think Gunn knows what he's doing to an extent. He said that the first film was Quill getting over his mother, and the second film will be Quill getting over his father.

That and he's putting Mantis in. All I need is Phyla and I'm gold.
>>
>>78504795
yeah, if they went with that, then it would allow for a Dick Rider movie
>>
>>78504806
Chris Pratt is awesome. I think he's WAY smarter than he actually plays it and purposely dumbs down his performances for likeability. Like, he was cool as Owen in Jurassic World, but I didn't have quite the urge to grab a beer with him.
>>
>>78504855
I was originally hoping he'd cast Pom Klementieff as Phyla, but, well, Mantis is originally Asian.
>>
>>78504856
Which is cool!

But...I'm not sure it would still be a Guardians movie. If they're going to adapt Nova Corps, they need to make that shit its own thing.
>>
>>78500318
The movie was weird for me in that it's unique and funny on the surface, but everything underneath is just another Hollywood blockbuster. And how they all became good friends seemed forced to me.
>>
>>78504898
Apparently Gunn did tell a Moondragon Cosplayer at Dragoncon 2 years ago that he really wanted to get Phyla and Heather into the film, but it's difficult convincing Marvel Studios. Seeing how fickle Marvel is, I don't doubt this story.
>>
>>78504856
Richard is never getting a movie. Too many people at Marvel hate him for that to happen
>>
>>78504806
I wish Who's On First was still a thing so Chris could be on it.
>>
>>78500318

It was a spiritual successor to Buckaroo Banzai.
Not Star Wars, pleb.
>>
>>78504922
The sudden kinship was believeable for me, I think, because I've been going to sci-fi and anime and comic conventions since I was thirteen. They became sudden friends much in the same way as I remember becoming sudden friends with a bunch of kids my age: "Oh SHIT I actually like these people and we have some similar experiences!" If you're not used to hanging around people that like you, that's enough to catalyze a connection. Not a firm connection, by any means, and I suspect the next film will have them dip into that, but a strong and immediate resonance.

I think Guardians portrayed that beginning of friendship pretty accurately.
>>
>>78504975
you mean Who's Line?

He said in interviews Marvel described the script for Vol. 2 as "risky" before approving it, so I wouldn't rule out them yet.
>>
>>78505051
Unless he made them Nebula's sisters. It's funny how people overlook the "Out of all our siblings" line as a hint at possible future villains.
>>
>>78504938
Apparently, Marvel thought the script for Vol. 2 was "risky" before approving it, so maybe we'll get our space lesbians after all.
>>
>>78502212
...but still several parsecs away from it.

The newest Star Wars was a bit shit. Not prequels-level shit but still pretty bum. It had some great set-pieces but that's not enough to make a film.
>>
>>78505073

Oh no, I think we'll see more of that in the sequel. Like, I can see Mantis being one of the other siblings.

Speaking of which, did anyone else get the sense Gamora and Nebula had a romantic relationship at some point and the former broke it off? It would make Nebula's resentment make a LOT more sense.
