I'm pretty new to Heathcliff, what are some essential running gags/lore? I know of garbage night, hats, and the mice but that's about it.

The joke is that Heathcliff has a wig for every occasion, season, event, holiday, etc. There also seems to be a sub-joke from the expression on his girlfriend. She's either confused that they'd be describing him or perhaps Gallagher forgot that she's a semi-regular character and she actually thought it was his real hair.

Another one that the other anons haven't mentioned is actually one that really gives a lot of backstory for Heathcliff, and that's the fact that his dad is a hardened criminal that's serving life in jail. The fact that Heathcliff looks up to him, plus the nature vs. nurture argument, gives insight into why Heathcliff turned out to be Bad News.
